Zo goed ken ik Phoenix ook niet, maar begin 00's hadden ze een paar singles die ik helemaal grijs heb gedraaid. Too Young hoort daar ook bij. Heerlijke indiepop van deze Parijse band en blijkbaar hun eerste hitje (97 in de Franse charts).

Van Clinic kocht ik deze single volgens mij bij Virgin op de Rotterdamse Meent, toen daar eens uitverkoop was. Best flink ingeslagen toen, maar deze sprong er wel uit en nog steeds. Toch wel een unieke sound, een beetje alsof The Fall een farfisa-orgel van Stereolab heeft geleend en een Morricone-spaghetti-western naspeelt.

Black Box Recorder had in '98 een briljant album uit en in '00 kwam een tweede. Dit is de leadsingle ervan. Muzikaal is het bijna zorgeloze indiepop, maar Luke Haines (o.a. van The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof) heeft er weer een briljante tekst bij geschreven. Voor mij een van de beste Britse tekstschrijvers na Jarvis Cocker en Morrissey.

Van Doves speelden we laatst een 'Greatest Hits' elders op dit forum en toen sprong The Cedar Room er wel bovenuit voor mij, van nummers die ik nog niet zo goed van ze kende. Maar hier moest 'ie nog een paar weken geduld hebben. Het is ook wel een opvallende singlekeuze, want echt radiovriendelijk is het niet met dik 7 minuten. Er is wel een edit, maar die doet dan weer niet echt recht aan de mooie opbouw in het nummer.

Things I've Seen van Spooks is een van de leukere top40-hits uit deze tijd. Mooie commerciële hiphop met een vleugje soul. Opvallend genoeg wisten ze er in thuisland de VS geen hit mee te scoren, maar praktisch heel Europa ging voor de bijl.

Aaliyah staat voor de tweede week op 1 met Try Again (Martijn Jonkers #1, herman #2, Marzipaintree #2, pureshores #9, Dim #13). Laurent Garnier komt wel erg snel dichtbij met The Man With the Red Face (pureshores #1, Marzipaintree #4, herman #6, Martijn Jonkers #8, Dim #10). Ja, dat zijn precies dezelfde inzenders.

Dat Pearl Jam naar 1 stijgt, is geen verrassing, dat had ik vorige week al aangekondigd. Nu is de vraag hoe lang hij dat gaat volhouden.

Vier nieuwe deze week, waarvan maar liefst twee in de top 10! Ik sluit niet uit dat dat verder nooit is voorgekomen. De hoogste is voor Metallica, samen met de San Francisco Symphony, de tweede single van het livealbum S&M. Voorganger Nothing else matters werd een grote hit voor de band, maar kreeg geen notering bij mij, die had het al eerder gehad. Maar No leaf clover (een variatie op four leaf clover, klavertje vier) was nieuw voor mij; sterker nog, het is een van de twee nieuwe tracks op het livealbum. De song is herkenbaar aan de Metallicasound, maar klinkt nog intenser door het klassieke orkest. Hevige en rustige passages volgen elkaar snel op. Het ontbreekt helaas wel aan een herkenbaar refrein, waarschijnlijk de reden dat het de NL top 40 net niet haalde.

De tweede binnenkomer in de top 10 is (natuurlijk) ook geen onbekende: Oasis. De band is nog groot, maar de singles worden geen hits meer (in Nederland althans). Who feels love is redelijk atypisch voor de band, met veel in koor gezongen lyrics, een wat plechtige melodie en veel psychedelische geluidjes. Mij bevalt het wel.

Het Belgische Metal Molly scoort 5 jaar na Orange een tweede entry bij mij, op 21, gewoonlijk de hoogste binnenkomer maar deze week de derde. Het is een midtempo alternative rocksong, met wat harmoniezang en wat ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, geen hoogvlieger maar wel een prettig geluid.

Erg bescheiden op 36 komt de Amerikaanse band Incubus binnen, met hun eerste entry in mijn lijst, Pardon me. De band is in Nederland nooit erg groot geworden, maar heeft bij mij tot op heden al 14x gescoord en is nog steeds actief. De sound van Pardon me past in deze tijd, met grunge-achtige rock met enkele crossoverinvloeden (rap, funk). Het liedje komt nu op mij niet al te bijzonder over.

Even dagje later, ik mag nu eenmaal graag op Koningsdag graag op jacht naar muziek. Cd's, vinyl maakt niet uit. Menigeen weet niet wat ze wegdoen voor 50 cent en het is een gemoedelijk feest.

Bands als de Wannadies en Nine Days (iets vrolijker maar van hetzelfde laken een pak) wil je elke week wel nieuw in je lijst hebben. Dat maakt je stemming ook beter. Tevens voorzien van de nodige stevigheid.

Neil Young is daar te serieus voor, zeker als hij het muzikale thema (weer eens) verlegt naar de periode van Harvest (1972). Slecht wordt het nergens maar Crazy Horse wordt node gemist.

Bij Paul Weller had ik de keuze tussen Wild wood en He's the keeper en koos gelijk voor de laatste. Die past meer bij Weller.

En tenslotte de loftrompet voor Duran Duran. Mocht er ooit in termen van veredelde boyband mogen worden gedacht en gesproken (mea culpa), er zijn toch ook wel nummers die in elk opzicht een onmiskenbare volwassenheid tonen. En dat geldt in dit geval zeker voor Someone else not me.

Van geen van de nieuwe binnenkomers was ik destijds echt fan, maar bij 4 van de 5 merk ik dat ik het toch wel leuk vind ze weer wat vaker terug te luisteren. Kryptonite was destijds vaste prik op de dansvloer die ik het meeste bezocht en het nummer zit ook wel erg goed in elkaar. Later heb ik nog veel meer van de band gehoord en dat klonk ook beter dan ik had verwacht, al ben ik verder nooit echt gegrepen.

Break Stuff vind ik achteraf wel een van de betere Limp Bizkit platen. Een band die toen een beetje fout was, want dit was meer iets voor pubers en niet voor begin-twintigers. Maar achteraf is dit ook wel een dijk van een plaat eigenlijk, hoewel Fred Durst een vervelend figuur blijft.

Met Bløf moest je bij mij al helemaal niet aankomen, nog steeds niet eigenlijk. Ze hebben ook wel echt een paar van de allerergste nummers van deze eeuw op hun naam. Maar dit Dansen aan Zee vind ik toch wel fraai, met een tekst die best raakt, terwijl ze zich meestal verliezen in quasi-literair geneuzel. De wonderen zijn de wereld nog niet uit.

Still D.R.E. heb ik gewoon niet zo vaak gehoord in die tijd, terwijl het best een bekend deuntje is. Maar best een toffe hiphopplaat.

De Stereo MCs remix is nieuw voor mij. Lyrics Born heeft wat schuurpapier op zijn stembanden, wat de raps prettig aanhoorbaar maakt. En Stereo MCs hebben het geheel in een stoer en dansbaar jasje gegoten.

Het begint zomers, vrolijk, met Brainstorm en de Bluetones. Maar het weer, gelijk aan het Nederlandse, wordt onstuimig, stevig, met de herkenbare thunderstorm van Iron Maiden om weer tot rust te komen met Porcupine Tree.

Hoewel de laatste band rond Steven Wilson ook een nogal stevig nummer presenteert, in ieder geval voor hun doen. Het kent natuurlijk wat meer variatie dan Iron Maiden maar iedereen zijn of haar smaak, uiteraard.

Deze week 4 binnenkomers, de hoogste is HIM op 24 met Join me. HIM is een Finse rockband, nu eens gothic, dan weer metal genoemd. HIM is een afkorting van His Infernal Majesty (de oorspronkelijke bandnaam). Met Join me braken ze wereldwijd door; het thema 'join me in death' sloeg bij de doelgroep aan maar zorgde ook voor controverse. In Nederland scoorden ze hiermee een bescheiden top 40-hit, tegelijk ook hun laatste succes. Als ik me niet vergis, is deze single al hier en daar bij collega's gepasseerd, maar hij wordt nu pas in Nederland op de radio gedraaid.

Sinéad O'Connor had al een flinke carrière achter de rug, die langzaam minder succesvol werd, maar met No man's woman kwam ze toch weer in de spotlights. De song is redelijk standaard, de tekst is wel weer eigenwijs, en inhoudelijk gelijk aan die van het iets oudere Nobody's wife van Anouk. Wel zet het lied steeds een stapje verder (ik denk dat dat modulatie heet), waardoor ik het nog steeds een van haar beste songs vind.

De derde nieuwe is voor de Canadese band Delerium, met gastzangeres Sarah MacLachlan. De song kent heel wat versies/remixes, maar het zal hier wel de 'Fade's sanctuary mix' zijn die nu al in onze gezamenlijke tipparade staat. Het is een hypnotiserende tranceplaat die dankzij de heldere zang van Sarah MacLachlan ver buiten het genre liefhebbers maakt. Deze versie scoorde een kleine hit in de NL top 40; later dit jaar volgt de Tiesto-remix en dat wordt een veel grotere knaller.

Ook een grote knaller werd You sang to me van Marc Anthony (20 weken in de top 40, hoogste notering 3). De song heeft een wat minder hoog tempo, en met de soepele, wat dramatische zang van Marc Anthony kan het iedereen aanspreken.

- Once Waz Nice zei me helemaal niets, maar dit is wel een heel fris uk garage plaatje. Had ook van gisteren kunnen zijn. Heerlijk dansbare beat.
- Paul Weller doet hier niets verrassends. Ik geloof wel dat ik hierna een beetje af zou haken.
- Looper is een elektronisch zijproject van Stuart David van Belle and Sebastian. Toffe plaat, lekker dwars.
- Kool G Rap werkt samen met RZA en dat levert soepele Wu-Tang-achtige hiphop op.
- A Perfect Circle was die andere band van de Tool-voorman. Destijds nog eens op Werchter gezien, wat wel aardig was. Muzikaal vond ik het nooit zo interessant, al is Judith wel een prima single.

Er zit veel circulaire economie in mijn top 20. De gehercontrunstueerde nummers doen het vaak beter dan de originelen waaruit ze gesampled zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld Black Legend. De oerversie van Barry White kwam bij mij in 1976 niet verder dan de onderkant van mijn top 20. Maar ik kan die lijst natuurlijk altijd weer herconstrueren.

De sample van Barry White komt uit een liveconcert. Ik heb ooit een enorme fan gekend die dat optreden in Gent heeft meegemaakt. Barry had (nog) een ander probleem naast wat hij in zijn nummer beschrijft: tijdens zijn shows begon hij zo hevig te transpireren dat hij aan het einde van het concert in zijn eigen zweet stond te klotsen. Tijdens “You See The Trouble With Me” gaf hij meerdere mensen een zompige hand – waaronder die kennis van mij. Daar zijn beelden van. Die fan was er zo blij mee dat hij zijn hand maanden niet heeft gewassen.

Week 19 en Poeha doet weer mee! Ik dacht eigenlijk dat Pearl Jam de nieuwe nummer 1 zou worden, maar in plaats daarvan breidt Laurent Garnier met The Man with the Red Face de voorsprong uit, waardoor hij voor de tweede week op 1 staat (pureshores #1, herman #2, Dim #2, Martijn Jonkers #4, Marzipaintree #6, Poeha #10).

"Sweet Love 2K" is een nummer van de Britse R&B-groep Fierce, bestaande uit Chantal Alleyne, Aisha Peters en Sabrina Weathers. Het nummer is een bewerking van Anita Baker's hit "Sweet Love" uit 1986, geschreven door Baker, Gary Bias en Louis Johnson. Deze versie werd uitgebracht in januari 2000 en bereikte de derde plaats in de UK Singles Chart, waarmee het de grootste hit van Fierce werd. Op de UK R&B Singles Chart piekte het nummer zelfs op de tweede plaats. De singleversie, getiteld "Sweet Love 2K", werd geproduceerd door het Noorse duo Stargate, terwijl de albumversie op Right Here Right Now werd geproduceerd door Jeremy Wheatley en Magnus Fiennes.
