- Arling & Cameron met W.E.E.K.E.N.D. is de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer deze week. Heerlijk lullige maar wel catchy plaat. Typisch zo'n band die cult was in Nederland, maar 'heel groot in Japan'. Eén a twee keer per jaar maak ik een pubquiz voor mijn tennisvereniging en daar is W.E.E.K.E.N.D. ook wel eens langsgekomen, want in de clip wordt -na een schimmige deal- ook getennist.
- Chemical Brothers' Music:Response was een EP blijkbaar, had hem vorige maand gemist (en destijds ook). Voelt voor mij heel erg als de openingstrack van het album en niet helemaal als een afgeronde compositie, maar het is verder wel een toffe plaat.
- Wu-Tang Clan komt met het vervolg op hun debuutsingle. Dacht eigenlijk lang dat dit de b-side was van Gravel Pit, maar het was ook een losse single, dus ik laat hem nu ook binnenkomen. Geweldige strakke beat, gebaseerd op de baslijn van Lowell Fulson's Tramp en een kreet van blueszanger Albert King.
- Gorillaz' komt binnen met Tomorrow Comes Today van hun eerste EP waar gelijk al een paar tracks opstaan die later ook op het debuutalbum komen. Heel tof nummer en eigenlijk nog niet zo rigoreus anders dan het latere werk van Blur.
- ADULT. vond ik destijds wat te kil, maar nu kan ik het wel beter hebben. Fijne electroclash.
- Mansun is wel een verhaal apart: tussen pakweg 1996 en 1999 helemaal grijsgedraaid, maar in 2000 kwam ineens een hele hele matige plaat die werd voorafgegaan door de toepasselijk getitlede single "I Can Only Disappoint U". Die haalde mijn lijst niet, maar dit Electric Man dat iets beters is komt net aan binnen.

TIP 4 | autopulver - if i get too deep
“If I Get Too Deep” van Autopulver verscheen als single met meerdere versies (o.a. een korte “Pop Version” en een langere “Floor Version”) en er is ook een Ruvel-“floormix” die het bossa-achtige origineel richting een dansbaardere sound duwt. De track werd opgenomen in Oslo (H10 en Blue Note Studio) en is later ook digitaal terug te vinden op het album Vapor Trails, inclusief een officiële videoclip.

TIP 7 | wu-tang clan - gravel pit
“Gravel Pit” is een single van Wu-Tang Clan van het album The W, geproduceerd door RZA, met een refrein dat leunt op Cameo’s “Back and Forth” en een beat die een soundtrack-sample van Antoine Duhamel (uit Belphégor) gebruikt. De videoclip (regie: Joseph Kahn) is berucht om de ‘tijdmachine’ die de groep per ongeluk naar “2.000.000 v.Chr.” slingert, en het nummer werd in het VK een grote hit met een piek op #6 in de Official Singles Chart.

TIP 16 | craig david - walking away
“Walking Away” is de derde single van Craig Davids debuutalbum Born to Do It, geschreven door Craig David en Mark Hill (die ’m ook produceerde) en het nummer haalde #3 in de UK Singles Chart. Er bestaan twee officiële clips: de Europese versie laat hem wegstappen terwijl het landschap continu verandert, en de Amerikaanse versie stapelt de ellende op (van een ondergelopen appartement tot een brandende ’67 Camaro). Op single-releases stonden ook allerlei extra’s en remixes—waaronder “7 Days (Live vibe in Amsterdam)”—en later nam hij het nummer opnieuw op voor Greatest Hits met verschillende gastartiesten per land.

TIP 17 | low - dinosaur act
“Dinosaur Act” geldt als een van Low’s hardste momenten: hij beukt binnen met een logge, “brontosaurus”-achtige riff en staat als derde track op Things We Lost in the Fire, dat werd opgenomen onder engineer Steve Albini (Electrical Audio, Chicago). Als single kreeg het nummer B-kanten (“Overhead” en “Don’t Carry It All”) die later ook op sommige edities van het album terugkwamen.

TIP 19 | alice cooper - brutal planet
“Brutal Planet” is de titeltrack en opener van Alice Coopers album Brutal Planet, geschreven samen met en geproduceerd door Bob Marlette, met een uitgesproken industrial/metal-achtige, moderne heavy sound. Opvallend is het contrast tussen Coopers rauwe voordracht en het zachtere refrein van zangeres Natalie Delaney; het nummer verscheen vooral als radio-promomateriaal (sampler) en werd live vaak als eerste “echte” song na de intro gespeeld.

TIP 20 | outkast - b.o.b (bombs over baghdad)
“B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)” is de hyperenergieke leadsingle van Stankonia, geproduceerd door Earthtone III, met een ongewoon hoge snelheid (rond 155 BPM) en een mix van drum-’n-bass, scheurende gitaren en een gospelkoor. De track bevat o.a. James Brown-samples (“Get on the Good Foot” / “Make It Funky”), werd door sommige radiostations gemeden vanwege de titel, maar haalde alsnog de hitlijsten (o.a. VK en Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop).

AngeloV, bedankt weer voor de fraaie vormgeving en uitgebreide toelichting bij de beide lijsten.

Wat mij al maanden opvalt, is dat de clip die je bij de lijst plaatst, ook bij je eigen lijst, in mijn weergave nooit zichtbaar is, maar altijd de tekst bevat 'deze video is niet beschikbaar'. Bij andere users zie ik dit nooit.
Ik weet niet of er een fout zit in de programmeertaal, of misschien wordt het via een ander land geplaatst (zo technisch ben ik niet), maar ik kan de video nooit zien; ik weet ook niet welke video het is. Misschien al eerder gemeld?

Shocking Lemon is een Japanse rockband die toevalligerwijs dan weer op mijn pad komt. Under star werd gebruikt als tune bij de Japanse serie Hajime no Ippo. Er is ook een korte tv theme van.
Mij zegt dat niets, ik geloof niet dat de serie in Nederland op de tv is geweest. Ik kom niet verder dan Pokemon. Vandaag een shiny kerst Sudowoodo gevangen, mijn dag kan niet meer stuk

Maar in Japan werd Shocking Lemon gezien als de ondergewaardeerde Smiths van Japan. Dus ze konden er wel wat van. Konden, de band is opgeheven in 2007.

Net even iets minder dan A Perfect Circle, en het stevige werk van Nickelback en Offspring.

Die Miles weet toch nog zomaar de eerste plek te bereiken! Niet slecht voor een artiest die sindsdien alweer bijna vergeten is. Maar lang lijkt hij daar niet van te kunnen genieten, want Utopia schiet van 10 naar 2...

Zoals te verwachten zo vlak voor de Kerst, slechts 3 nieuwe. Maar dat zijn geen opvullertjes. De eerste is van Spooks, een Amerikaans hiphopcollectief. Met Things I've seen scoorden ze een grote hit, met een prettig herkenbaar refrein met vrouwelijke vocalen van Ming-Xia en raps van meerdere bandleden. In NL werd dit top 10 en haalde 16 weken. Bij mij blijft het bij deze ene hit.

Op 25 komen Freddie Mercury en Montserrat Caballé binnen, maar niet met Barcelona, maar met Guide me home. Barcelona is uit 1987 en werd een nog grotere hit in 1992 (dankzij de Olympische Spelen). Ik kan wel terugvinden dat deze song eind 2000 in Nederland als single is uitgebracht, maar niet waarom. De opname zelf is al terug te vinden op het album uit 1988. Het is in de stijl van Barcelona, maar dan een stuk meer ingehouden; geschikt voor de kersttijd, maar niet echt een banger.

De laatste nieuwe is van Kosheen, de opvolger van hun grote hit Hide U; deze heet Catch. De song is een stuk meer dancegericht, elektronischer dan zijn voorganger. Het werd opnieuw een hit, maar wat minder groot. Tot mijn verbazing komt deze me vrijwel niet bekend voor (maar dat zal steeds vaker voorkomen, vrees ik).

Er volgt nog een laatste lijst van 2000 op 27 december, dus nog geen jaaroverzicht.

Utopia van Goldfrapp kende ik niet zo goed tot ik hem de laatste weken eens goed ging beluisteren, maar ben het nummer steeds beter gaan vinden. Fascinerende tekst ook, uiteindelijk is het allemaal helemaal niet zo utopisch, ondanks dat de muziek wel zo klinkt.

Qua nieuwe binnenkomers is de spoeling wat dun, maar dat is fijn, dan kan de tiplijst weer wat inkrimpen. Geen van de nummers heb ik destijds vaak gedraaid, op het soulvolle Demons na zijn het allemaal ontdekkingen zelfs.

DJ Vadim uit Rusland komt met een stoer nummer dat een beetje lijkt alsof Kae Tempest een tekst van Gil Scott Heron voordracht. Goede beat ook.

The Workhouse had ik werkelijk nog nooit van gehoord, maar dit Peacon is een fijn stukje postrock, een genre waar ik toen wel liefhebber van was.

Femi Kuti is natuurlijk de zoon van en dat is ook muzikaal onmiskenbaar hoorbaar.

17 | delerium / sarah mclachlan - silence (dj tiësto in search of sunrise remix)
“Silence” is een nummer van de Canadese electronic-act Delerium met vocals (en mede-songwriting) van Sarah McLachlan; Tiësto’s “In Search of Sunrise”-remix maakte er een iconisch vocal-trance anthem van die jarenlang overal in clubs opdook. In het VK scoorde de release met o.a. de Tiësto-mix zelfs top-3 in de fysieke singleschart en #1 in de UK Dance Chart. De remix blijft ook decennia later hoog in “beste dance/trance tracks”-lijstjes verschijnen (o.a. bij Mixmag-lezers).

TIP 9 | u2 - stuck in a moment you can't get out of
“Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” is de tweede single van All That You Can’t Leave Behind en Bono schreef ’m als een denkbeeldig gesprek met zijn vriend Michael Hutchence over zelfdoding. Meer een stevige “wake-up call” dan een treurballad. Het nummer leverde U2 een Grammy op (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal) en scoorde meteen hoog in Europa, met o.a. #1 in Ierland en Italië en #2 in het VK.

TIP 10 | anouk - don't
“Don’t” verscheen als single rond de compilatie Lost Tracks, een release met b-kanten en alternatieve versies uit Anouks eerdere periode. In de Nederlandse Top 40 piekte het op #13 (8 weken) en opvallend: Anouk produceerde het zelf en schreef het samen met Bart van Veen.

TIP 11 | the hives - hate to say i told you so
“Hate to Say I Told You So” was dé internationale doorbraak van de Zweedse band The Hives, afkomstig van het album Veni Vidi Vicious en (typisch Hives) op naam geschreven door hun fictieve songwriter Randy Fitzsimmons. In het VK haalde de single de Top 30 (piek #23), en het nummer bleef daarna overal opduiken in popcultuur, o.a. op de Spider-Man-soundtrack en later ook in games.

TIP 15 | blank & jones - beyond time
“Beyond Time” is een single van het Duitse trance-duo Blank & Jones, met een opvallend filmische videoclip die is geregisseerd door Til Schweiger en waarin hij zelf (samen met Estella Warren) te zien is. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk haalde het de officiële singleschart (piek #53) en deed het het relatief nóg beter in nichelijsten zoals de Dance Chart (piek #22) en de Independent Singles Chart (piek #6).

TIP 16 | harvey danger – authenticity
“Authenticity” is een single van Harvey Danger van hun tweede album King James Version, en werd pas ná de albumrelease als single uitgebracht. Opvallend is dat het nummer wél extra exposure kreeg via films (o.a. Dude, Where’s My Car? en Soul Survivors), maar alsnog geen videoclip of brede promotie kreeg omdat de band toen al uit elkaar was.

TIP 17 | the gentle waves - falling from grace
“Falling From Grace” is een EP/single van The Gentle Waves, het project van Isobel Campbell (o.a. bekend van Belle & Sebastian), uitgebracht via Jeepster Records (VK) en Matador (VS). Naast het titelnummer staan er nog drie extra tracks op: “Going Home”, “October’s Sky” en “Hold Back A Thousand Hours”. Het nummer is ook terug te vinden op het album Swansong for You, waardoor het vaak een logisch “instappunt” is in die dromerige twee-pop sound.

TIP 19 | our lady peace - in repair
“In Repair” was de leadsingle van Our Lady Peace’ conceptalbum Spiritual Machines, geïnspireerd door futurist Ray Kurzweil; op de plaat wordt het nummer direct voorafgegaan door een korte “R.K.”-spoken-word passage die Kurzweil zelf inspreekt. De videoclip (gemaakt door Oli Goldsmith) is een geanimeerde collage van honderden artworks en won bij de MuchMusic Video Awards meerdere prijzen (o.a. voor regie en post-productie). Daarnaast geldt het nummer als één van de Canadese #1 radiohits van de band.

TIP 20 | agnelli & nelson - hudson street
“Hudson Street” is zowel een single als de titeltrack van Agnelli & Nelsons debuutalbum, uitgebracht op het trance-label Xtravaganza. In het VK kwam het tot #29 in de officiële singleschart, maar deed het het nóg beter in de UK Dance Singles Chart met een piek op #8.

Het was niet te vermijden: Utopia weet nog net de nummer 1 te bereiken in 2000. Ben benieuwd hoe lang dat mag duren?

In deze meest single luwe periode heb ik toch nog drie binnenkomers bij elkaar weten te schrapen. De hoogste slechts op 34 van de Hongaarse singer-songwriter Yonderboi, zijn enige entry bij mij. Pabadam begint met het pianomotiefje van Ain't got no... I got life, en gooit daar voor de rest van het liedje een jazzy/easy listening/loungey-achtig sausje overheen, zeer herkenbaar door het eindeloos herhaalde Pabadam. Prettige achtergrondmuziek, maar (is mijn strenge oordeel nu) ook niet meer dan dat.

De tweede entry is heel andere koek: het Nederlandse Green Lizard debuteert met Autumn (net iets te laat voor het seizoen). De Tilburgse rockband had al eens de Grote Prijs van Nederland gewonnen, en maakte indruk met hun eerste album, geproduceerd door de internationaal succesvolle Clif Norrell. Autumn is een behoorlijk dreigend klinkende en steeds meer aanzwellende rocksong, met angstaanjagende violen, die het op de radio goed deed maar commercieel helaas niets voor elkaar kreeg.

Na het niet op single uitgebrachte Break down the wall (deze week net uit mijn lijst gevallen) vervolgt Anouk haar carrière met Don't, een stevige midtempo rock ballad zoals we inmiddels van haar gewend zijn. In de clip doet ze haar best om zich zo onherkenbaar mogelijk uit te dossen. Het liedje blijft helaas niet zo goed hangen, al is het maar door de al te korte titel.

Hiermee is het jaar 2000 voltooid en uiteraard volgt hierna mijn jaaroverzicht.

Bij deze ook mijn jaarlijst. Zoveel meer dan 100 nummers stonden er niet in mijn top 20 (alleen die krijgen punten), dus ik noem ze allemaal maar. Nummers die voorafgegaan worden door een * staan nog genoteerd, al hoeft van Spiller (op 20 momenteel) niet verwacht te worden dat daar nog punten bijkomen.

Veel kende ik al, al was het in sommige gevallen oppervlakkig (Utopia) en volgende nu een uitgebreidere kennismaking. Het enige nummer uit de top 50 dat me echt niets meer zei was nummer 31, Lucky Star van Superfunk. De vocalist daarvan overleed nb. dit jaar.

In de tweede helft van de lijst nog wat meer ontdekkingen, vaak in de electronica/downtempo-hoek (Laika, Jimi Tenor, Pram, Tosca. Downtempo/lounge vond ik toen vaak saai en vervelend, maar achteraf zijn er toch wel mooie dingen in gemaakt - al moet je wel steeds meer het kaf van het koren scheiden.

Ik heb getwijfeld of ik nog een jaartje door wilden gaan: de hele jaren '90 doen incl. een jaar ervoor en erna leek me een mooi doel. Vooral ook omdat het qua tijd vaak wat krap werd. Maar ik ga wat strenger selecteren in mijn tips/bronnen en dan moet het wel weer lukken. Ben benieuwd welke trends we komend jaar allemaal gaan tegenkomen!
