Flinke opruiming met 9 nieuwe binnenkomers:
16: Twa Toots was een van de favoriete bandjes van John Peel. Na het opnemen van een Peel Session verdwenen ze alweer, hoewel de zangeres ook nog met 80s bandje Sarah Goes Shopping een single uitbracht. Hoe dan ook, superfijne uptempo girl group twee pop waar ik erg vrolijk van word.
18: One Dove is midtempo dance, een beetje in het straatje van The Orb, Andrew Weaterhall, etc. Zangeres hier van dienst is Dot Allison, waarvan ik niet wist dat ze al zo lang actief was. Ik ken haar van een prima soloalbum van begin 00s en heb haar een paar keer live gezien als gastvocaliste bij Massive Attack, ook in die tijd.
20: The Shamen is wel bekend. Hun beste sinds Omega Amiga wat mij betreft.
23: Wolfsheim heb ik een jaar (of twee) geleden ontdekt via een ander topic op de site en toen aardig wat gedraaid. Goed dat Johan hem hier ook in het vizier heeft gebracht. Prima vleermuizensynthpop.
28: Inner City is toch ook wel een ontdekking eigenlijk. Tot dit jaar wist ik niet dat ze ook na de grote hits nog zulke fijne nummers hadden gemaakt. Deze is niet zo goed als Till We Meet Again, maar toch ook weer erg fijn.
33: Siouxsie luistert gewoon net zo weg, al is dit minder spannend dan de vorige single.
35: Elvis Costello's So Like Candy klinkt elke week weer ietsje mooier en haalt nu ook bij mij de lijst. Mooie stem heeft 'ie toch, die Elvis.
36: Shades of Rhythm komt met een nieuwe klapper na Sweet Sensation. Heerlijke Britse dance.
38: Alice in Chains - Blead the Freak klinkt niet anders dan hun vorige singles. Mooie krachtige grunge.

Ook in 1991 is het midzomer, maar hier wel een nieuwe nummer 1: This Mortal Coil bereikt de hoogste positie in hun zevende week.

En ook hier slechts drie binnenkomers. Op 35 Elvis Costello die nog beter zingt dan ooit tevoren in een fraaie ballad, So like candy. Grappig dat ie bij collega herman op exact dezelfde positie binnenkomt.

Op 36 Erasure met Chorus, dat begint met een hoop moderne (?) elektronica, maar dan toch uitmondt in een redelijk standaard liedje, waarvan het refrein helaas niet echt blijft hangen.

Op 37 Michael Penn (die van No myth) met Brave new world, een behoorlijk haastig en nerveus liedje met een wat retro-rock-n-roll geluid. Niet echt een hoogvlieger.

Tipparade: week 29 van 1991.

1. Gipsy Kings - Baila Me
Zomerse zigeunermuziek, natuurlijk bloedcommercieel maar met passie en energie en ritmisch ook erg geslaagd.
Cijfer: 7,5

22. The Black Crowes - Jealous Again
Bluesy rock dat rond 1970 afkomstig lijkt te zijn en lonkend naar Rolling Stones en Faces. Maar geef mij dit soort rock met een natuurlijke productie boven die opgeblazen en gelikte AOR.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Theo Diepenbrock - Aan De Playa Blanca
Geen clip gevonden.

26. Golden Earring - Temporary Madness
Werd een relatief kleine hit voor Golden Earring wegens minder aansprekend maar deze mannen wisten ook in de jaren '90 degelijke rocksongs te brengen.
Cijfer: 7

27. Jason Donovan - Any Dream Will Do
Dit klinkt erg glad met vlakke zang al is het geenszins een zwak nummer. Met een minder gelikte productie en meer expressieve zang zou dit een ruime voldoende hebben gekregen.

28. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - Let The Beat Hit 'em
Dit zegt mij weinig door de zwakke, afgeknepen vocalen en clichétekst. Het nummer wil ook niet echt swingen.

29. Gerard Joling - Tu Solo Tu
Klinkt als een minder aftreksel van No More Boleros met melige BZN-arrangementen. Deze man kan beslist zingen en heeft zeker in het begin aardige dingen uitgebracht maar de inspiratie was duidelijk op.

30. Clouseau - Hilda
Een Clouseau-nummer dat tussen de plooien is gevallen, staat op geen enkel album en zelfs op geen enkele compilatie. Toch geen slecht nummer dat het moet hebben van de eenvoud en emotie.

Na zes weken Shiny Happy People is het tijd voor een nieuwe nummer 1. Safe From Harm is de, verwachte, nieuwe nummer 1. Net als Unfinished Sympathy lost ook dit nummer een R.E.M.-song af op de 1e plek. Maar Sympathy hield het slechts 1 week op de eerste plek vol, ik ben benieuwd of Safe From Harm langer standhoudt. Het verschil met Guns 'n Roses is alvast minimaal.

Vijf nieuwe songs. Als hoogste een heerlijk zonnige zomersingle van David Kilgour, de voormalige zanger van Kiwi-legendes The Clean. Het is de eerste single van zijn solodebuut, Here Come the Cars, van het bekende Flying Nun-label.

Vlak daarachter een veel bekendere artiest. Elvis Costello met de eerste single van Might Like a Rose. So Like Candy is een mooie ballad. Geen I Want You, maar wel gewoon goed.

Op 17 de eerste single van Billy Bragg's bekendste album Don't Try This At Home. Hij schreef dit nummer samen met Johnny Marr, en dat is goed te horen aan het fijne gitaargeluid. Johnny is daardoor trouwens hofleverancier van de weeklijst, want hij staat met Bernard Sumner ook op 4. Op Billy's volgende single spelen overigens twee leden van een nog beroemdere band mee, een band die net niet meer op nummer 1 staat

Siouxsie haalt ook met de follow-up van Kiss Them For Me de weeklijst. Shadowtime vind ik nog net wat beter, ik denk wel hun laatste echt goede single.

Chapterhouse haalde ook de weeklijst al met het geweldige Pearl.
Falling Down is duidelijk wat minder, maar nog altijd een lekker wah-wah-indie-liedje.

Voor mij als passieve volger hebben jouw lijsten zeker meerwaarde. Een buitenbeentje ben je voor mij zeker niet. In 1985 bijvoorbeeld zouden Raspberry baret van Prince en She sells sanctuary van the Cult, jouw nummers 1 en 2, bij mij nummer 1 hebben gestaan als ik mee had gedaan. Gelukkig ga je nog door, Poeha.

Goed om te lezen
En dat geldt ook voor de andere reacties uiteraard. Uit dat 1985 topic krijg je me sowieso niet weg. Daar zitten we nu net rond de beste muzikale periode voor ondergetekende.

Weer een rustige (vakantie)week, met maar 3 lage binnenkomers. Op 34 de derde single alweer van Seal, met de vertrouwde sound, maar The beginning is niet zo goed als de voorgaande twee.

Op 36 de Australische band Divinyls met een opmerkelijke track, I touch myself. Niet opmerkelijk door de sound, die is vrij standaard, maar door de tekst, want zoveel liedjes over vrouwelijke zelfbevrediging zijn er niet (en zeker niet als ze in veel landen een grote hit worden). Los hiervan is het gewoon een prima popliedje.

Op 37 weer iets totaal vergetens, de Noorse band The September When met hun enige wapenfeitje in NL, Mama won't tell you no lie. Vrij brave rock, met een iets feller refrein.

Prima eigentijds dance-nummer met soulvolle zang en stijlvolle arrangementen zoals de piano, de blazers en functionele achtergrondzang.

Vrij eigenzinnige mengeling van soul en eigentijdse dance al blijft het nummer minder hangen dan zijn vorige hits, tekstueel is het ook wat minder.

In weerwil van de groepsnaam is dit eerder frisse gitaarpop met een snuifje elektronica waarin Johnny Marr (The Smiths) meespeelt. Dat tikkeltje mystieke sfeer maakt het voor mij aantrekkelijk.

Nooit geweten dat Linda De Mol een single had opgenomen. Nou ja, dat had ze beter niet gedaan want zingen is niet haar sterkste kant.

Een latino-versie van een Beatles-nummer. Vocaal mist het de intensiteit van The Beatles maar dat gitaartje en de Spaanse sfeer en ritme maken het een leuke cover.

Oorspronkelijk van Moments & Whatnauts, een grote hit uit 1975. Al verkies ik het zwoele origineel, hier wordt toch iets eigen van gemaakt door de jazzy sax.

Werd dit in 1991 heruitgebracht? Hoe dan ook een geweldig nummer door de originaliteit en opgebouwde spanning.

29. Sonic Surfers featuring Prhyme - Beat Of Zen
Kende ik niet, blijkt een Nederlandse band te zijn. Het nummer is mij teveel een samenraapsel van wat in die tijd hip was en mist eigenheid al blijven die aanstekelijke synths wel hangen.

Ik hou 1991 tot nog toe al 8 weken ongepubliceerd bij en ga nu ook hier maar eens actief meedoen. 1991 is voor mij tot nog toe in de breedte erg sterk waardoor je wekelijks makkelijk tot 100 kandidaten komt die top 40-waardig zijn. Bovendien is de kloof tussen de nr.1 en de nr. 40 zelden zo klein geweest.
LucM geeft perfect weer waarom dit deze week mijn nr. 1 is. Afgelopen weken bovendien in Spanje geweest dus dat zal meespelen.

Bedankt allemaal. Ik heb me voorgenomen om aan alle wekelijkse lijsten topics mee te doen. Dat zijn er volgens mij nu vijf: 1966, 1972, 1985, 1991 en 2016. Als er nog een topic is laat het mij dan weten dan doe ik graag mee.
En altijd met een top 40. Als ik het vol hou dan kan ik met vijf topics in 2032 alle jaren vanaf 1954 tot en met 2032 hebben gedaan.
Of ik het ga halen weet ik niet. Ik ben dan bejaard of ik leef niet meer. Bovendien moet je het volhouden. Ik ben pas sinds november lid en het voelt soms of ik al jaren lid ben.
We hebben ook nog Jocelyn Brown, Guns 'n Roses en Lennie Kravitz gemeen en die hebben bij mij behoorlijk hoog gestaan.
Jocelyn Brown bijvoorbeeld vond ik destijds in 1991 vreselijk. Een schaamteloze en schreeuwerige remake van Always there van Side effect uit 1976. Maar anno nu ben ik het eens met de tekst van LucM.
Ook Transvision Vamp vond ik destijds niet geweldig. Verre van origineel die het bovendien nog van het uiterlijke vertoon van de zangeres moesten hebben. Maar nu beluister ik deze single met andere oren en bekijk ik Wendy James met andere ogen.
Smaak veranderd. Als ik over 25 jaar opnieuw naar mijn lijst van 1991 kijk dan zou het zo maar kunnen dat Styx er in komt te staan.
Erasure heeft bij mij top 5 gestaan. Goeie plaat inderdaad. In mijn lijstjes halen de singles altijd met moeite de 10 weken. En zeker in 1991 met die geweldige concurrentie.
Ben benieuwd hoe het zal gaan in 1954.
Bedankt voor de correcties, dat stel ik op prijs. Ik dacht dat ik de top 20 wel goed gedaan had maar nee hoor, de nr. 1 bleek ook verwisseld. Het zit er bij mij ingeramd dat platen meestal met de titel beginnen zoals bij de Nederlandse top 40 ook het geval is. Ik zal beter moeten opletten. Inmiddels is bovenstaand lijstje aangepast.
Ik zie dat Musician in week 30 zit en de rest in week 29. Dat maakt het voor mij wat verwarrend want week 30 is inderdaad 27 juli 1991 en week 29 is 20 juli 1991. Is dit een bewuste keuze?
