Een nieuwe nummer 1 dient zich aan, van een groep die hier niet vies is van de nummer 1 positie.
Na successen op 1 met The fly en Mysterious ways mag ook Even better than the real thing de koningspositie opeisen. Met slechts 1 punt verschil met de Welsh boys op 2.
The Cure moet prijsgeven maar nog steeds in onderlinge strijd met Suede, allebei 59 punten maar Suede met meer draagvlak nog.
Dan krijgen we een hilarisch lange rij met steeds 1 of 2 of 3 puntjes verschil tot de nummer laatst.

Vijf nieuwelingen waaronder hier (vind ik) opmerkelijk Elton John met een degelijk nummer zonder poespas.
Pulp brengt een nummer met effectjes en opmerkelijke geluidjes en de groep uit Sheffield is hier nog lekker in de marge bezig net zoals The Verve waar later in de 90's geproefd mag worden van groot succes.

Toad The Wet Sprocket's All I want is een echt radionummer en ligt makkelijk in het gehoor, net zoals het nummer van Evan Dando's Lemonheads. It's a shame about Ray haalt de lijst net maar heeft misschien nog een langere adem.

Op 19 haalt ook TLC de lijst, hier nog Wet n Wild waar in 1995 wereldhits gewoon worden, nu met een mix van hiphop en nawee stuipen New jack Swing, zonder een blad voor de mond.

Prachtig nieuw duet tussen Elton John en Eric Clapton, ik had het nog nooit gehoord. Blijkt afkomstig van een film.
Maar de schoonheidsprijs deze week is voor het nieuwe nummer van The House of love. Ergens doet het mij denken aan het aankondigen van de Veronica Drive In show denken. Komt vooral door dat orgeltje aan het begin.

Op 28 de licht exotische en rustgevende klanken van Deep Forest met Sweet lullaby. Er wordt een relaxed sfeertje neergezet, dus erg spannend wordt het niet.

Op 32 een nieuw geluid van Sass Jordan, een Amerikaanse rockzangeres, die met haar band een organisch geluid neerzet, vol overtuiging zingt en wat mij betreft heel wat sterker dan Melissa Etheridge. In NL doet het helaas weinig.

Op 33 komt Sting met een ouderwets beschouwende singer-songwriter lied, geholpen door de introspectieve gitaarklanken van Eric Clapton. Nieuwe fans zal hij hiermee niet aanboren, maar voor de oude fans is het een traktatie, en het wordt een grote hit.

Op 36 The Adventure Babies. Wie? Ik was dit ook totaal vergeten, en dat zal de komende jaren steeds vaker gebeuren. Barking mad is een aardige rustige rocksong met een sterke tekst.

Op 37 een vrolijke niets-aan-de-hand hit van Janet Jackson en Luther Vandross. Professioneel uitgevoerd, behoorlijk refrein, maar het blijft je niet erg bij.

En op 38 weer een single van Prefab Sprout, met de kenmerkende zang van Paddy Ashdown en intelligent overkomende teksten.

Voor oude Sting fans een traktatie? Ik vond (en vind) het echt een verschrikkelijke draak.

Ach, ik roep ook maar wat .

Flowered Up, The Cure (Friday I'm In Love) en Adorable scoren nog punten. Van The Cure verwacht ik nog wel dat ze in de buurt van The Verve komen, ik ben dat nummer nog lang niet zat.

1. Madonna - This Used To Be My Playground
Eén van haar beste ballads, met veel gevoel gezongen waarin Madonna zichzelf vocaal overtreft. Schitterende begeleiding ook.
Cijfer: 8,5

16. Prince and The New Power Generation - Sexy MF
Geen clip gevonden maar het is weer een geslaagde single van Prince: sexueel getint zonder plat of vulgair te zijn, prima raps en vooral heerlijke jazzy blazers.
Cijfer: 8,5

22. Sting - It's Probably Me
Relaxte maar gevoelige, licht jazzy single van Sting, helder geproduceerd waarbij die bluesy gitaar van Eric Clapton het nummer nog wat meer in de hoogte stuwt.
Cijfer: 8

23. Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
Zowaar countryrock in de hitlijsten maar in zijn genre vind ik dat - zowel melodisch als tekstueel alsook de riff - vrij banaal. Goede countryrock in de 90's moet je bij Jayhawks en Mavericks zoeken (maar die scoren geen hits).

24. Beckie Bell - Steppin` Out Tonight
De geijkte dancepop begin jaren '90 is meestal best te doen al lijken die nummers op elkaar. Dit zit ook in de categorie 'kan gaan' maar het nummer valt nauwelijks op.

25. Bruce Springsteen - 57 Channels (And Nothin' On)
Niet bepaald mijn favoriete Bruce-song. Weliswaar grappig maar te vlak en te monotoon.

26. Concrete Blonde - Someday?
Concrete Blonde ken ik vooral van het geweldige Joey. Dit nummer steekt er bleekjes tegenover al zit het wel goed met de zang en gitaarbegeleiding.

Toen zong Koen Wauters lager en daarom kan ik zijn hits in de beginperiode beter pruimen dat die van nu waar Koen een schelle hoge stem opzet. Aanstekelijk nummer overigens opgefleurd met blazers.

Ik weet niet welke versie ik moet nemen, ik heb maar de beste genomen. Heeft merkelijk meer inhoud dan de meeste dancehits die tijd (ook meer afwisseling) al wil de zangeres wat teveel laten horen hoe ze kan zingen.

29. Patrick Bruel - Décalé
Patrick Bruel heb ik nooit zo gevolgd en het doet mij ook minder dan de meeste France chansons niettegenstaande de aparte percussie en het exotisch gitaartje, het kabbelt wat te monotoon voorbij.

30. Vanessa Williams - Just For Tonight
Een gladde ballad, boeit mij ook niet zoveel ondanks haar vrij mooie stem wegens te standaard.

Eens met jouw analyse over Billy Ray Cyrus. Banaal. Maar muziekwaardering werkt soms onbegrijpelijk want toen ik mijn 6-jarige zoontje 9 jaar geleden een dansje zag doen op dit nummer toen steeg deze minstens 2 punten in mijn waardering.
Dat Jayhawks en Mavericks geen hits scoorden dat begrijp ik niet. "Dance the night away" van the Mavericks en "Take me with you (When you go)" zijn wel degelijk hits geworden in Nederland.

Inderdaad, The Mavericks zouden (pas) in 1998 een hit scoren.

01 (05) Sonic Youth - 100% - In de andere topics haal ik er voor de lijstjesliefhebbers van alles bij. Dus hier uiteraard ook: deze staat nummer 60 in Pitchforks top 200 van de jaren 90. Met een uitgebreide onderbouwing van Pitchfork.
Maar wat vind Marzipaintree er van? Er gebeurt zoveel ellende in deze wereld en dan moet je het met veel lawaai uitschreeuwen. Maar echt begrijpen doe ik het nooit, waarom kan het leed niet ietsje minder? Vooral de vraag aan het moordslachtoffer raakt mij voor 100%: Can you forgive the boy who - shot you in the head. Or should you get a gun and - go and get revenge?
02 (15) INXS - Heaven Sent. Ik kan er wel weer een lijstje bijhalen maar zo overtuigend scoort deze track niet in de diverse INXS -lijstjes. In de Top 60 INXS Songs op rateyourmusic staat deze slechts nr. 36. Ik begrijp niets van deze lage notering want ik vind het de beste track van de door de media eveneens onderschatte CD "Welcome to where ever you are". En als ze uit de hemel komt dan denk ik dat ik gek zal worden. Ja, onbegrijpelijk.

Ik snap ook niet veel van deze verboden liefde . Op de site van versiergoeroe Victor Verlon vinden de lijstjesliefhebbers een opsomming van verboden liefdes. Een getrouwde vrouw, een -ex, een foute vrouw. Bob lijkt een liefde te hebben die alle elementen bevat. Lijkt, want ik kan er naast zitten. Can you bring the light, Bob? Over fridge above the palmtree?

Guilty pleasure van mij maar als ik er met muziekvrienden over begin dan voelt het meer als een "forbidden love". Discussies hierover lopen dan ook meestal uit de hand: Mind your business and leave my business. Echt uitleggen kan ik deze niet.

Professor Morrisey geeft op de CD-single college in vriendschap en liefde in drie delen: 1. "You're the One for Me, Fatty", 2. "Pashernate Love" en 3. "There Speaks a True Friend
Hoe meer ik me in zijn teksten verdiep hoe minder ik het begrijp. Pashernate Love bijvoorbeeld. Het zal wel weer geniaal zijn.

Helemaal mee eens en fraai geformuleerd. Alleen dat van 31 jaar geleden dat snap ik niet. Maar dat zal wel aan een andere "Countdown" liggen.

Deze openingstrack van de CD "Soft Bomb" vind ik verreweg het beste nummer van de hele CD maar net als met Lindsey wordt het tijd dat ik de hele CD nog eens opzet. Ook diepere psychologie die tekstueel voor mij niet te volgen is maar duidelijk is wel dat de vertolker gefrustreerd en boos is.

Na 1 week mag U2 alweer een stap terug doen want de Manics zijn the real thing in week 28.
De concurrentie komt eraan met een race tempo met een knappe notering voor Electronic op 3 en Pulp op 4.
Friday I'm in love zakt langzaam weg wat bij mij de vraag gelijk opriep (voor luigifort of johan de witt welke singles verder van Wish komen?

Drie nieuwelingen deze week:
James is weer van de partij. Seven klinkt mij alweer beter in de oren dan Ring the bells.
Met trompetjes en ik moet steeds aan Keane denken.

Sonic Youth's 100% is kort maar krachtig en het rifje klinkt mij heel bekend uit een MTV trailer ofzo.

Zonder Onweerwolf redt Bronx Style Bob het nu al , een geval zomerhit en one hit wonder maar wel een lekker nummer.

Sophie B Hawkins was bijna weer teruggekeerd, deze week op 21 met net 1 draagvlak user te weinig.
