En Losing My Religion stond ook 7 weken op 1
Dus ze hebben nu het record met drie verschillende singles.
Of volgende week een nieuw record van 8 weken.

Dat zou toch wel licht gênant zijn als het bijzonder matige Mannetje in de maan verhaal de topsingles Drive & Losing my Religion op die manier verslaat.

Ik verwacht ook niet dat het mannetje een achtste week op 1 haalt.

Die blijft nog wel even meedraaien hoor, sowieso nog 9 weken voordat die bij Luigifort de 1ste plek zal veroveren

Oceans staat alweer 5 weken op 1, Your town lijkt het niet te halen, misschien Would? ?

Op 21 nu ook bij Ordinary world, de comebackplaat van Duran Duran van wie toen niet echt meer wat verwacht werd. De nieuwe single staat inmiddels ver van het geluid van de beginjaren, maar voor het met hen meegegroeide publiek (ook volwassen geworden) een prima, meeslepende ballad, zelfs lichtelijk pompeus, maar de song kan het hebben.

Op 26 de altijd krachtig en bezield klinkende band Living Colour. Leave it alone is wel een van hun minder sterke singles denk ik, maar slechte songs hebben ze niet gemaakt.

Op 28 de elders al aangekondigde nieuwe single van REM, en voor zover ik weet mag ik weer de eerste zijn om hem te melden... The sidewinder sleeps tonite klinkt wat speelser. Het refrein is zo razendsnel gezongen dat niemand het zal verstaan (Call me when you try to wake her up). De titel zinspeelt op de oude hit The lion sleeps tonight. En een sidewinder (ik heb het maar even opgezocht) is een soort ratelslang (die zich ongetwijfeld zijwaarts voortbeweegt). Ben benieuwd hoeveel weken deze op 1 zal staan in onze gezamenlijke lijst!.

Op 36 zomaar weer Boyz II Men, en als ik dit nu terughoor, is het toch vooral klef en eentonig. Maar wel goed gezongen natuurlijk.

Op 37 ook nog het Canadese The Tragically Hip met Courage, ik denk wel hun bekendste song (maar geen top 40 of tipnotering). Een sterke rocksong, redelijk traditioneel. Dankzij de stem van (wijlen) Gord Downie zeker geen eenheidsworst.

Een geweldige nieuwe lijst, vooral gedreven door zeven klinkende nieuwe songs. Lenny Kravitz klinkt als herboren en eigenlijk presenteert ook Sting voor het laatst een eigen hoogstaand album met bijbehorende promo single.
Maar er zit geen zwakke broeder tussen, 1993 lijkt daarmee definitief losgebroken!

Haha geweldige clip van Deacon Blue! Na het succes van Your Town proberen ze zich hier een stuk hipper voor te doen dan ze eigenlijk zijn, het drukke typisch 90's clipje past ook niet echt bij het liedje.

Bovenin had ik Palomine wel de eerste plaats gegund; voor mij misschien wel het beste nummer van een Nederlandse groep ooit. Dat mijn vriendin dit ooit op haar begrafenis wil helpt wel mee, maar ik ben ook dol op Bettie en ga ze binnenkort ook weer eens live zien. Desalniettemin pakt The Beloved de koppositie. Dit nummer is al één van mijn favoriete songs aller tijden en vanmiddag viel het bij een wandeling door de mooie oude binnenstad weer volledig op zijn plaats, zowel muzikaal als tekstueel. Echt volop genieten was dat.

Nieuwe aanwas:
- D:Ream: echt een enorme feelgoodsong door het krachtige refrein, geweldige hit (voor in Engeland dan);
- Man or Astro Man?: debuutsingle van deze legendarische cultband, die een mix speelt van instrumentele garagerock en surfmuziek, later nog aangevuld met allerlei retro-scifi-elementen. Heerlijke gitaarriff hier ook. Jammer dat ik dit nooit live heb gezien.
- Groove Sector: verslavende houseplaat, ik draai de Cadence Club Mix
- R.E.M.: leuke single, maar ik vind dit wel een paar niveaus minder dan Drive en Man on the Moon, dus de punten voor een eerste plek in de weeklijst zullen meer van anderen moeten komen...
- Gene Loves Jezebel: enige nummer dat ik ken van deze band, beetje gothic wave a la Sisters of Mercy en The Mission.

maar liefst 7 nieuwe binnenkomers, een heb ik zelf ontdekt namelijk op 37 een nieuwe van Extreme die met grote regelmaat singles uitbracht maar na het grote succes begin jaren '90 nu vooral nog in Amerika succes heeft al komt deze in de lijst van 31 januari in Engeland binnen op een prachtige 15de plek. Een echte single vind ik het niet. Daar is het te weinig catchy voor.

De rest komen uit de lijst van de andere, waarvoor dank. Sting komt met bijna zijn beste jaren '90 single, D:Ream is net als bij herman ernstig jeugdsentiment (maar ook gewoon een erg goed nummer) en ook INXS weet me ouderwets te raken met deze ballade. Ook ik doe mee met de REM golf. Kwalitatief misschien niet zo goed als Drive en Man on the Moon maar wel minstens zo aanstekelijk.

Al met al een zeer sterke week met een nieuwe nummer 1!

Ik ben normaal gesproken een vrij melancholisch en nostalgisch persoon die zeer clichématig zijn kindertijd romantiseert en prefereert ten opzichte van de struggles van het volwassen zijn. Gelukkig heb ik mijn lijstjes bewaard zodat ik mezelf af en toe weer ferm in het nu kan plaatsen middels gênante noteringen als mijn nieuwe nummer #20 van deze week.

En het wordt nog erger zag ik bij het digitaliseren een tijdje terug. Iets met foebel..

Overigens was ik mij in de 90's nog niet bewust van het feit dat mijn nieuwe nummer 1 een cover was. Ignorance is bliss waarschijnlijk want later ging ik dergelijke bewerkingen toch hard minder waarderen.

Helaas deze week van mij geen lijstje, ranboy.

Allemachtig...inderdaad wat een week, niet normaal. Ik heb vorige week 5 nieuwe nummers laten binnenkomen op een lijst van 25, veel dus. Maar ik heb nu al een lijst met minimaal 20 sterke tracks. Kan moeilijk m'n complete weeklijst vervangen. Weet nog niet hoe ik dit moet aanpakken. En m'n lijst uitbreiden gaat niet gebeuren. Ik kan nu al niet bijblijven in het 1987 topic. Gaat teveel tijd inzitten, maar het moet van mezelf
Veel nummers uit de lijstjes van m'n medegebruikers. Waaronder Levellers (van een 1991 album). Nooit verwacht dat ik daar wat van zou opnemen, maar gewoon ook een mooie song.

Jawel, het maanmannetje pakt toch nog een achtste week op 1, waar Drive het met slechts zeven moest doen! Wel vermoed ik dat we zelden een nummer 1 gehad hebben met zo weinig punten. Volgende week zal er echt wat anders staan, en ik denk toch niet dat The sidewinder sleeps tonite zomaar op 1 binnenkomt . Meer kansen zijn er voor The Beloved, dat daarmee zijn naam waarmaakt.

Frappant is nog dat vorige week Drive van R.E.M. de meeste weken had, en deze week Man on the moon...

De hoogste nieuwe is van grungeband Alice in Chains, het geweldige Would? Helaas wordt dit (nog?) niet breed gedragen, dus in de top 3 verwacht ik hem nog niet zo snel. Ook Jesus Jones komt hoog binnen, en Paul McCartney pikt nog een hitje mee. Bescheiden op 19 de nieuwste dance-sensatie Robin S, die met Show me love en opvolger nog lang de dansvloeren zal vullen.

Would? staat in de wachtkamer bij mij, samen met heel veel anderen waar ook Extreme-Tragic comic dankzij vigil bij is gekomen, helaas gaat de doktersdeur erg weinig open bij mij de laatste tijd maar in feb gaan de laatste 1992 nummers hard vervangen worden.
