Ik volg mijn bevindingen via RYM, eventueel gecorrigeerd door UMD en voor oudere lijsten 45cat. Dat is vrij Engels/Amerikaans gerelateerd, begrijp ik ook. Heeft iemand anders het nummer eerder, zoals laatst bij de Boo Radleys (ik had zelf 19 juli staan), vind ik het ook best.
Goed dat je aangeeft dat de Boo Radleys op 19 juli staan. Ik had ze anders in mijn lijstje opgenomen deze week. Omdat het album van augustus 1993 is en de Engelse tijdschriften pas na 19 juli gewag maken van de single, is het blijkbaar ondenkbaar dat iemand behalve een kleine incrowd rondom de Boo Radleys het nummer al in juni 1993 kende. Ik heb geen idee wat je er allemaal mee wilt zeggen, met deze discussies.

Zo raak ik tenminste ook mijn imago "braafste jongetje van de klas" kwijt.

Nu al de nieuwste top 20 lijst, dankzij vlotte inzending van de tien huidige deelnemers! Inhaken mag altijd

Suede houdt de nummer 1 vast, maar elke week loopt Depeche Mode in, wat best opmerkelijk is, aangezien Suede drie weken geleden de koppositie van DM overnam. De rest van de lijst toont weinig verrassende verschuivingen.
Wel zijn er vijf binnenkomers, waarvan er toch zeker drie van grote kwaliteit zijn, met kans op de nummer 1 positie. Dat zijn de Manic Street Preachers, passievol als altijd, Stone Temple Pilots met hun bekendste hit, en de Canadese Porno for Pyros, in bijna elke popquiz wel terug te horen
. Van The Hobnail Boots verwacht ik minder hemelbestormende acties (het is al een wonder dat die de lijst gehaald heeft) en de Posies zie ik nu maar even als een goede middenmoter...
En om een beginnende traditie in ere te houden: voor volgende week tip ik David Bowie met Black tie, white noise.

Ik zie van deze nieuwe binnenkomers eigenlijk vooral The Posies in staat zijn om hoog te komen.
Van dat nummer van MSP heb ik trouwens nog nooit gehoord.

Op 24 ook bij de Manic Street Preachers met een van hun vele krachtige, passievolle singles, From despair to where.
Op 29 ook een erg veel gedraaide ninetiesplaat (net als Two princes bedoel ik), alleen Runaway train was daar wat minder tegen bestand, of misschien is hij gewoon wat minder sterk. Wel geholpen door een clip met vermiste kinderen.
Op 30 Donald Fagen die in zijn eentje nog meer als Steely Dan klinkt dan Steely Dan zelf. Vooral FM komt in mij op. Niet slecht, maar ook niet erg origineel.
Op 32 Living Colour met Nothingness, een wat somberder liedje over eenzaamheid, natuurlijk wel weer direct en goudeerlijk gezongen door Vernon Reid.
Op 34 de geluidsexplosie van Brian May met Cozy Powell. Een stevig geluid, maar de melodie blijft hiervan ook niet erg hangen, ik was het liedje alweer vergeten.

32: Alice In Chains' nieuwe zou ik niet bepaald lief noemen. Angry Chair is boos en zwaar. Geen Rooster-niveau, maar wel gewoon goed.
34: Aimee Mann leerde ik jaren later pas kennen via de soundtrack van Magnolia, maar dit liedje viel ook meteen in de smaak. Wat steviger dan haar latere werk, maar door die prachtige stem klinkt het meteen erg vertrouwd.
35: Isabelle A ken ik verder eigenlijk alleen van een liveversie van Lieve Kleine Piranha samen met Gorki, maar voor dit nummer heb ik altijd wel een zwak gehad. Ook in NL nog een klein top40-hitje.
39: The Sugargliders komen met een lekker loom gitaarliedje met ook nog een toefje trompet op het einde.
40: Felix da Housecat zou in 2000 groot doorbreken met een vet geluid, hier klinkt ie nog erg lo-fi en wat tegendraads.

De nieuwe binnenkomers gaan alle kanten op, van The Godfather van popular electronic music met een meer dan fan-tas-ti-sche single naar de spannende grunge van Brad (band van Pearl Jam gitarist Stone Gossard), het mooie kleine singer-songwritter liedje van oud Crowded House en Split Enz bandlid Tim Finn naar de hippe boyband East 17 die een cover brengen van een wel heel bekend liedje en van de stadionrock met boodschap van Midnight Oil tot de chillhiphop van PM Dawn met 80's icoon Boy George. Dan noem ik ook nog even de alternatieve indie band Blind Melon met hun moment of fame om het rijtje af te maken.

Ook hier nu Water from a vine leaf binnen, van het briljante Strange cargo 3, wat een blauwdruk geeft voor onderdelen van Ray of light, All Saints produkties en andere latere remixen, op dit album hoor je prehistorische voorproefjes. En Beth Orton mag schitteren op Water
Soul Asylum mag ook zeker charten met de zanger die op een kat lijkt
en de iconische video, iets wat in de jaren 90 kon, videos waar lang over gepraat werd, dat lukt nu niet meer zo.Onderin dan de opvolger van Open your mind, die veel meer in de euro trukendoos grabbelt, wel een silly video

Suede staat al 4 weken aan kop, vooral dankzij de breed gedeelde punten van 9 deelnemers. Toch komt Depeche Mode steeds dichterbij, ook al neemt die plaat in absolute punten ook af. Gaat St. Etienne dan nog verder stijgen? Het lijkt onwaarschijnlijk, zij halen al praktisch het maximaal haalbare uit slechts vier deelnemers. Meer kansen geef ik aan de Pet Shop Boys, die zitten nu al op 6 puntengevers.
Op een mooie 11e plek komt David Bowie binnen met het wat tegendraadse Black tie, white noise. Ik begrijp nu pas dat de tekst gaat over racisme. Geen (grote) hit, wel een sterke plaat.
Op 17 vinden we wel een grote hit, Soul Asylum met Runaway train. Ik zou niet verwachten dat dit bij ons breed gaat scoren, maar ik zou me zomaar kunnen vergissen. De Souls of Mischief zijn nieuw voor mij, een vette hiphoptrack van een Westcoast rapcollectief. Mij viel op dat de sound (instrumentatie) ouderwets verzorgd is. En Tears for Fears brengt een geslaagde comeback-single uit die niet onder doet voor hun meeste jaren 80 werk.
Als tip voor de komende week wijs ik Björk met Human behaviour aan.

Buitengewoon wisselvallig jaar, heel moeilijk samen te stellen in verband met alle fraais die er wordt uitgebracht.
Als je dan toch een Top 30 wilt aanhouden terwijl een Top 50 makkelijk zou kunnen blijft het ingewikkeld puzzelen. En goede songs die maar geen hit willen worden in verband met de aanwezigheid van nog betere.
Maar speciale ruimte wordt er natuurlijk desondanks altijd vrij gemaakt voor Steve Miller. Toen zat er 5 jaar tussen zijn nieuwe album en z'n vorige, een hele tijd. Hoeveel van je publiek is er nog over, voor een notering in de hitlijsten? En kan het je nog wat schelen?
Enfin, een volgend album van Steve Miller zou worden uitgebracht in 2010 (!), ik zou er nu nog maar even van genieten.

Op 18 een aparte single van de Disney Cast, Jungle Book groove. Het is remix van twee songs uit 1967, I wanna be like you en The Bear Necessities. Gewoonlijk heb ik niet veel met die oude tekenfilm/musicalliedjes, maar dit is zo aanstekelijk dat je er vrolijk van wordt. En tekstueel gaat het toch ook nog ergens over.
Op 19 megahit What's up van Four Non Blondes, de bijna one hit wonder met hitsongwriter Linda Perry als bekendste lid. Een opvallende hit, want supercommercieel en toch uit onverdachte indie-hoek afkomstig. Niet onbegrijpelijk werd de song wel van plagiaat beschuldigd, de melodie lijkt erg veel op Dont worry be happy van Bobby McFerrin. Wat mij betreft is het een goeie song, maar wel wat veel gehoord...
Op 32 Jamiroquai met de van hem vertrouwde sound. De titel Blow your mind klinkt vrij heftig, het liedje is relaxter dan ooit.
Op 34 Therapy? met Face the strange. Deze is niet eens als clip op Youtube te vinden (alleen een live-versie), dus misschien was het ook geen single (ik zeg het er maar vast bij).
Op 37 een artiest die in 1987 deze week ook binnenkwam, dit keer in duet met Des'ree. Delicate is een lieve ballad met een herkenbaar synth (?) riffje. Kan altijd.
Op 38 Björk met een van haar bekendste songs, Human behaviour, tevens haar eerste top 40 hit. De productie is apart, haar stem uiteraard ook, en de clip is wel het meest van alles. En tegelijk is het toch geschikt voor een vrij groot publiek.

- Chumbawamba & Credit to the Nation: mooi indiepop nummer met ska-invloeden en bovenal lekker radicale teksten.
- Unit Moebius: sfeervolle electronische muziek uit Den Haag, vergelijkbaar met de muziek van Aphex Twin op SAW1.
- Stereo MC's: het bekende recept. Niet zo sterk als hun hits, maar nog steeds erg aanstekelijk.
- New Order: dit nummer is mij nooit echt opgevallen, al staat het wel op de verzamelaar die ik als tiener eens van New Order kocht. Maar afgelopen week een paar keer gehoord en begin het nu wel meer te waarderen. Rustig nummer met een gevoelige melodie die toch onder de huid gaat.
- Aerosmith: jeugdsentimenthit, destijds waren de clips van Aerosmith met Alicia Silverstone niet van MTV weg te slaan.

- Mazzy Star: een rustige serenade met inderdaad niet veel meer dan vijf snaren. En natuurlijk die fantastische stem van Hope Sandoval. Mooie cover van een nummer van Arthur Lee's Love uit 1992 (ik wist niet eens dat die toen nog bestonden).
- Chumbawamba & Credit to the Nation: mooi indiepop nummer met ska-invloeden en bovenal lekker radicale teksten.
- Unit Moebius: sfeervolle electronische muziek uit Den Haag, vergelijkbaar met de muziek van Aphex Twin op SAW1.
- Stereo MC's: het bekende recept. Niet zo sterk als hun hits, maar nog steeds erg aanstekelijk.

Vorige week 7 nieuwe binnenkomers waarvan er helaas maar eentje volgens mij is opgepakt door de andere (notabene East 17...) je zou toch verwachten dat vooral Brad en Blind Melon een breder publiek zou kunnen aanspreken, maar goed het is niet anders. Deze week weer een hoop nieuwe binnenkomers, zes deze keer. Nu heb ik weinig zelf gevonden (volgens mij enkel Moby) en heb bij de andere gevist, vooral bij Hans. World Party is toch wel een apart liedje binnen hun discografie, nooit klonk Wallinger en co zo boos, agressief en stevig. De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is van Jesus Jones, een lied wat enkel in die jaren en dan ook nog alleen in Engeland een hit kon worden. Tenminste een 30ste plaats werd bereikt en het was een van hun laatste hits.

Ik hoop wel dat-ie bij jou wat verder komt dat de staart van je lijst, waarin hij nu dreigt te blijven hangen. Of wacht je nog op medestanders voor hij omhoog schiet?
