December is de maand dat er enige rust moet intreden, het afwikkelen van het laatste uitgebrachte werk.
Voorlopig blijkt er nog weinig van. Er blijven grote nummers uit komen en ook niet eens de minste namen.
Er valt te overdenken, of zo'n titel van Nirvana anno nu nog zou kunnen, ondanks dat het verder een (prima) standaard Nirvana single is. In die tijd stond men nergens van te kijken, maar ik kan mij voorstellen dat ook in 1992 Rape Me als titel opzien zal hebben gebaard.
Maar goed, die rol is door Nirvana en soortgenoten natuurlijk met verve gespeeld, opzien baren. In tekst, muziek en voorkomen.

Op 23 de tweede single van The red shoes van Kate Bush, Moments of pleasure, en na het swingende Rubberband girl is nu de beurt aan een ballad, zoals alleen Kate Bush ze kan maken. Ze neemt de tijd voor een goede opbouw, met een finale waarin ze oude bekenden (geliefden?) aanspreekt, terwijl ze in de clip langs scheren en weer verder gaan. Ik ben natuurlijk een oude sentimentele gek, maar de laatste jaren krijg ik hier altijd tranen van in mijn ogen. Kate Bush heeft vele fantastische singles, en wat ik de mooiste vind verschuift steeds (van Wuthering Heights naar Cloudbusting, dan The sensual world en nu misschien wel deze).
Op 27 onze Nederlandse vrienden The Prodigal Sons met een ouderwetse rocker die iedereen alweer vergeten is.
Op 32 Johnny Cash met een re-release van Ring of fire (ik denk dat-ie in een reclame zat). Goeie song.
Op 35 een onwaarschijnlijke kerstsingle van Robby Valentine. Onwaarschijnlijk vanwege de stijl (hairmetal hardrock) en de tekst ( [Santa] is our only friend, he's megaman). Toch is dit Robby's debuut in mijn top 40; zijn grote hit Over and over again vond ik wat te slijmerig.
Op 36 dan weer het vertrouwde geluid van Buffalo Tom, in de stijl van Taillights fade, maar dan zonder dat beetje extra.

Pulp versterkt zijn positie op 1 fors, en staat nu al bijna op 100 punten, een totaal dat we al enige maanden (dacht ik) niet meer gezien hebben. Elastica stijgt wel van 8 naar 2, maar lijkt mij toch niet breed genoeg gedragen om de nummer 1 te bedreigen. Dat geldt wel voor de hoogste nieuwe...
Op 4 maar liefst knalt Find the river van R.E.M. binnen, een nostalgisch klinkende rustige song met een sterk spirituele inslag. Verder op 14 toch nog Gavin Bryars, op 17 alweer de vierde single van Björk in nog geen jaar tijd, en op 20 ook de nieuwe Pearl Jam (terwijl de oude zich naar de uitgang spoedt).

Drive vind ik dan weer niks. Maar Find the River behoort samen met Try Not to Breathe en The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite tot de drie parels op het album.

Ik krijg wel een sterk "Huilen is voor jou te laat"-gevoel bij Ace of Bace in de KWARTEEUW LIJST.
Corry hield het in 1970 37 weken uit in de top 30 van de Veronica top 40 (41 weken totaal).
AOB staat er inmiddels 38 weken in.

Juliana gewoon met 2 nummers in de top 3, waarom ook niet. Daaronder zit het een beetje vast, ook niet zo gek, bijna de hele top 8 kan wel op 1 (alleen met de smaak nu de nummer 7 niet meer).
4 binnenkomers.
Op 9 alweer een nummer van de Judgement Night soundtrack, Helmet + House of Pain met toch wel een van de hoogtepunten op het toch al zo goede album.
Een stuk lager ook bij mij de Lemonheads met een nieuwe, beetje kabbelend nummer maar eigenlijk geldt dat wel voor meer van hun.
Onderin Billy Joel met een single die ik ook al bij meer mensen heb gezien...
Daartussen dan nog Cher samen met tekenfilmhelden Beavis & Butt-Head. Me z'n 3en nemen ze een klassieker van Cher toen ze het nog met Sonny deed onder handen, voor die tijd een geweldige samenwerking (maar misschien moet je er bij geweest zijn).

Juliana gewoon met 2 nummers in de top 3, waarom ook niet. Daaronder zit het een beetje vast, ook niet zo gek, bijna de hele top 8 kan wel op 1 (alleen met de smaak nu de nummer 7 niet meer).
4 binnenkomers.
Op 9 alweer een nummer van de Judgement Night soundtrack, Helmet + House of Pain met toch wel een van de hoogtepunten op het toch al zo goede album.
Een stuk lager ook bij mij de Lemonheads met een nieuwe, beetje kabbelend nummer maar eigenlijk geldt dat wel voor meer van hun.
Onderin Billy Joel met een single die ik ook al bij meer mensen heb gezien...
Daartussen dan nog Cher samen met tekenfilmhelden Beavis & Butt-Head. Me z'n 3en nemen ze een klassieker van Cher toen ze het nog met Sonny deed onder handen, voor die tijd een geweldige samenwerking (maar misschien moet je er bij geweest zijn).

Grappig, ik vind dat echt een sprankelend popliedje met als ik me niet vergis ook Juliana Hatfield die de vrouwelijke stem voor haar rekening neemt. Doet me een beetje aan de Cardigans denken. Door dit nummer ook het album weer eens beluisterd en ik vind het nu veel leuker dan toen. Misschien ga ik wel naar hun concert in Utrecht over een paar maanden.
Die cover van Cher en Beavis & Butthead is erg leuk, maar ik was er dan ook bij....

Eigenlijk staat Juliana er dus 3x in bij mij 
Ik vind het wel goed maar kabbelt toch een stuk meer dan een hoop oudere nummers zoals bv. Confetti. Maar eigenlijk is het ook helemaal niet zo'n 'harde' band.

Hoe vaak gebeurt het dat twee versies van hetzelfde liedje tegelijk binnenkomen? Ik denk een unicum, en zeker als het in twee verschillende talen gebeurt. Op 29 komt de onbekende Italiaanse Laura Pausini binnen met La solitudine (de eenzaamheid), een ouderwetse pianoballad met een ijzersterke melodie. Het zal een van de grootste Italiaanse hits ooit worden.
Op 32 vinden we een nieuwe van Sam Brown, die altijd verbonden zal blijven aan haar monsterhit Stop. Haar stem is goed herkenbaar op Fear of life; ook hier is flink wat drama in de productie gedaan, het klinkt goed maar het blijft niet echt hangen.
Op 33 dan die cover van de Italiaanse song, een Nederlandse vertaling van Paul de Leeuw waarmee hij ook een reusachtige hit gaat scoren, nog groter dan de Italiaanse versie. Het is ook veruit Pauls grootste hit bij mij; hiernaast heeft hij alleen nog een klein hitje gescoord met Vlieg met me mee. Ik wil niet dat je liegt overtuigt mij wel, terwijl al zijn andere hits ofwel te lollig, ofwel te sentimenteel zijn.
Op 37 weer zo'n fraai stemmig liedje van Crowded House.

Sam Brown heb ik na haar 2e album een beetje uit het oor verloren, paar jaar geleden nog wel een poging gedaan een inhaalslag te maken maar met wisselend succes.

Een schitterende week weer met veel fraai nieuws:
Deze week werd bekend dat Stereolab na 10 jaar radiostilte komend jaar optredens gaat geven, o.a. op het Primavera Festival waar ik meestal heen ga. Voor mij toch wel het beste muzikale nieuws in tijden, want Stereolab is de afgelopen jaren wel uitgegroeid tot een van mijn favoriete bands. Mede ook door het geweldige French Disko, met een heerlijk doordendere krautrockbeat, weemoedige gitaar-riff en dat kenmerkende farfisa-orgel. Overigens is de langere EP-versie wel te prefereren boven de kortere versie die op sommige verzamelaars opduikt, wel jammer dat die niet op Spotify staat.
Oasis - Columbia heb ik goede herinneringen aan. Midden jaren '90 had ik een zomerbaantje waarbij ik veel moest fietsen en de soundtrack daarbij was Oasis, waar ik helemaal verslingerd aan was. En dan vooral dit Columbia dat ik op een gegeven moment maar gewoon op repeat bleef zetten. Dat gitaarwerk in het tweede gedeelte, echt geweldig. En nog steeds vind ik dit een van hun beste nummers. Yeah.
Nirvana draaide ik in die jaren ook veel en dit All Apologies staan dan ook in mijn muzikale geheugen gegrift. Ik zie nu dat Rape Me eigenlijk ook een a-kant is, dus die zal ik dan ook maar bij mijn tips zetten.
Crowded House inderdaad weer met een fraai stemmig liedje. Lang vond ik ze veel te zoet, maar ik ben toch wel een liefhebber aan het worden.
WOOP WOOP! Een echte boombapklassieker van KRS-One, ook erg gaaf om dit te horen bij de eerste keren dat ik uitging (in het Leidse LVC) al was dat een paar jaar na 1993.
I Was Born On Christmas Day van Saint Etienne is autobiografisch, want Bob Stanley is daadwerkelijk geboren op 25 december. Verder een leuk nummer dat ik destijds oppikte via MTV's Hitlist UK. Ik ben toen zelfs nog de laatste cd van Saint Etienne gaan luisteren in de Free Record Shop, maar daar kon ik toen verder nog niet veel mee. Later heb ik dat wel redelijk ingehaald.
Aimee Mann's Stupid Thing heeft hier wel even in de week gelegen, maar gaandeweg ben ik het een steeds mooier liedje gaan vinden. Geen uptempo nummer zoals haar vorige single, maar meer een ingetogen liedje in de stijl van haar latere doorbraakhits.

Ik ben vast begonnen met de voorbereidingen van 1994, aangezien ik toen geen top 40 meer maakte zal ik die nieuw moeten bedenken. Ik heb een hele lijst singles die ik of zelf heb of van albums komen die ik heb maar van de helft heb ik geen idee waar in het jaar die uitgekomen zijn.... ik heb als bronnen rateyourmusic en een 'hitdossier' van de UK hitparade (datum van binnenkomst) maar dat dekt maar een deel van de nummers... (oja de Tipparade is er ook nog voor eventuele andere nummers)
