Champagne Supernova is nooit een single in de UK geweest, maar wel in de rest van Europa. Met op gitaar en als achtergrondzanger Paul Weller. Het nummer had nog een keer een hit kunnen worden in een versie van de Urban Cookie Collective, maar helaas stak Noel Gallagher daar een stokje voor.

15 mansun - take it easy chicken
Het origineel van Mansun’s Take It Easy Chicken komt uit 1995, toen Mansun nog Manson heette. Nu in de herkansing heeft het nummer meer succes. Uiteindelijk groeit dit nummer uit tot de vaste afsluiting van concerten van Mansun.

Op 17 een klassieker volgens Nederland, want het staat de afgelopen zeven jaar steeds in de top 2000.

Vandaag met wit rood shirtje aan en blikken van het balkon hier tegenover waarom niet in oranje, dus nu mag Three lions binnenkomen, na 25 jaar weer hoop.
Verder Oasis ook, deze kwam lekker binnen als in heel weinig gehoord.
MC Lyte jat lustig van Liberian girl en Sandy B met 1 van de duizenden versies, dit is de originele voordat de UK garage crew hem onder handen neemt in 1998.

Omdat Livin' Joy en Culture Beat geen doorgang meer gaan vinden als commerciele danspop en van de tiplijst afvielen laat ik Macarena de vrije doorgang krijgen en ik moet zeggen dat ik me er echt nooit aan kan irriteren, gewoon een gimmick plaat met ongewone cast.

Re nummer 1: die edit van Pearl's girl in de video haalt zoveel spanning weg, de album versie is echt waar het om draait

week 24 voor 1996 waarin ik zowaar een hele rits aan binnenkomers tegelijk heb. 6 stuks on totaal.
Bovenin lijkt Maria voorlopig de enige echte concurrentie te zijn voor Scheer; helaas lijk ik de enige liefhebber van beide te zijn.
Deep Blue Something, 90s klassieker die zowel op kink als radio2 pastte destijds. Ik heb al tijden het plan de film eens te gaan kijken, dat moet binnenkort toch maar eens gebeuren.
Sneaker Pimps met hun 2e notering; ik vind het altijd lastig met ep's. Waarom is dit nou een ep terwijl het gewoon om een albumtrack in 2 versie + 2 extra nummers gaat. Toch maar binnen laten komen dan want het is wel een heerlijk nummer.
Inmiddels de 3e single van Natalie Merchant in mijn lijst, dat is nu een meer dan 10.000 maniacs in de 80s gehaald hebben. Bekend recept, rustig en mooi.
Audioweb met hun 2e notering bij mij, er gaan nog veel volgen allemaal van het eerste album. Dit nummer is weer net zo'n mengelmoes van stijlen als de vorige. Beetje triphop, wat Senser achtige gitaren en dan valt ineens Shaggy in? Nou niet de echte maar wel een sound-a-like.
Scooby Snacks; net als DBS ook een echte klassieker zij het wat minder wijdverspreid. Wel altijd een dansvloervuller in elk geval.
Destijds was ik niet zo'n liefhebber van Biohazard en soortgenoten. Hoewel, Prong en Clawfinger vond ik wel goed maar ook veel in het genre niet. Het werd wel behoorlijk bij ons gedraaid al komt dit specifieke nummer me niet echt bekend voor. Achteraf toch wel een lekker bakje herrie,

Op 31 vinden we Golden Smog, een band die klinkt als een kruising tussen World Party en Jayhawks (vond ik zelf bij het beluisteren). Die laatste naam is niet vreemd, aangezien Golden Smog een samenwerkingsverband blijkt te zijn tussen leden van o.a. Soul Asylum, Wilco, The Replacements en... The Jayhawks. Zo klinkt het dus ook: Amerikaanse gitaarrock met piano en harmonieuze vocalen.

Op 33 zowaar Boudewijn de Groot met Een wonderkind van 50. Het blijkt zijn enige notering in mijn lijst in alle 46 jaar te zijn, en hoewel het jarenlang in de top 2000 van Radio 2 heeft gestaan, werd het geen hit. De titel lijkt te verwijzen naar hemzelf (als twintiger een groot artiest, maar nu als vijftiger niet belangrijk meer), maar het blijkt te gaan over de Groningse dichter Halbo C. Kool, die in de jaren 30 veelbelovend debuteerde maar verder niet veel succes meer had. Muzikaal is het wat meer bandachtige rock, dus passend in de jaren 90. De tekst is overigens als vanouds van Lennart Nijgh.

Op 36 een re-entry van het eerder besproken Pepper van The Butthole Surfers. Dit kon gemakkelijk gebeuren als ik platen erg weinig op de radio hoorde, en hij na vertrek toch nog eens gedraaid werd en duidelijk te weinig punten had gescoord. Veel zal het ook dit keer niet opleveren.

En op 37 Simply Red met een breed opgezette, zware ballad, We're in this together, dat nog de top 40 weet te bereiken. Het refrein is echter wel zwak: 'we're in this together - forever'; dat daargelaten is het wel goed uitgewerkt met gospelkoor en trompetjes. Pas bij de slottonen begrijp ik dat dit hoort bij het EK 96...

Midge Ure associeer ik heel erg met de late jaren '70/vroege jaren '80, maar dit nummer klonk wel heel bekend. Misschien een hitje geweest ergens?

Pianoman - Blurred zei me niets meer, maar dat is een Britse danceplaat met een sample van Blur erin verwerkt. Erg aanstekelijk, krijg gelijk zin in de zomer hiervan. Maar ik vermoed wel dat de houdbaarheidsdatum beperkt is.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

09 | ocean colour scene - the day we caught the train
De hoogste binnenkomer is de derde single van het album Moseley Shoals (Moseley is een wijk in Birmingham, Shoals slaat op Muscle Shoals, een plaats in Alabama waar in de jaren ’60 veel studio’s te vinden waren waar soulmuziek werd opgenomen. Hoewel er nog veel nummers volgen voor Ocean Colour Scene is dit hun best verkochte in de UK.

17 | bush – glycerine
Glycerine is een nummer dat geschreven werd voor de toenmalige vriendin van de zanger van Bush. Nederland was het enige niet Engelstalige land waar het nummer de hitparades haalde.

19 | de heideroosjes – klapvee
Een nummer als protest tegen klappend publiek bij televisieprogramma’s. Hans Kazan en André van Duin krijgen nog een sneer mee. Maar een leuk nummer is het natuurlijk wel. Wat ik nu dankzij Wikipedia weet, maar voor de fans misschien allang bekend is: de bandnaam komt van Urbanus, die ooit in zijn show de Limburgse hardrockband de Heideroosjes aankondigde. De Heideroosjes bestaan overigens nog steeds, al is de ‘de’ tegenwoordig officieel verdwenen.

20 | baddiel / skinner / lightning seeds - three lions
Voetbalnummers slaan meestal de plank mis – hoewel ik persoonlijk dit jaar ineens een zwak heb voor twee voetbalhits, Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo samen met Wesley Sneijder en de tophit ‘we komen tot de achtste finale’ van Max Verstand – maar deze is wel erg geslaagd. Zo geslaagd zelfs dat het nog steeds ‘het’ nummer is van het Engelse team. In 2018 stond dit nummer zelfs weer op nummer 1, met de op zich lelijke chartrun van 24-1-97. Engeland zal er in die laatste week weer eens uitgevlogen zijn. En het record van zakken vanaf nummer 1 is sinds 2018 weer verbroken, toen Wham met Last Christmas vanaf nummer 1 uit de top 100 viel. Tot slot nog een teleurstellend feitje: het publiek dat je aan het begin hoort zijn Denen: fans van Brøndby, opgenomen op Anfield in 1995 tijdens een UEFA-cup wedstrijd.

De romantiek van de terugkeer naar het verleden. Een prachtige nieuwe single van Kula Shaker waarbij de band blijk geeft van in ieder geval de klassiekers te kennen.

En daar dan een prachtige bijdrage aan te leveren. De band waar ze goed naar hebben geluisterd is de oude Pink Floyd en met name de oorspronkelijke psychedelische klanken zal Kula Shaker hebben aangesproken. Waarbij zij zelf een wat zonniger interpretatie op het vinyl hebben gezet.

Patti Smith en Queen zijn natuurlijk een mooie interpretatie van vooral zichzelf. Nada Surf, Green day leveren sterk werk af wat we van ze gewend zijn. Er was nog één band waar ik echt nog wat van moest opzoeken: Divine Comedy. Maar ook hier een alleraardigste groei briljant.

Twee dagen voor mijn dertigste verjaardag had ik een nieuwe nummer 1: het geweldige Goldfinger!

En vijf binnenkomers, waaronder drie debutanten, en (bijna) allemaal klassiekers...

Op 19 de eerste single van Dodgy, In a room, Britpop in optima forma (alleen gek dat ze het niet Britrock noemden, bij pop denk je toch meer aan Take That en Wet Wet Wet). Aanstekelijk en vlot, niet baanbrekend, altijd goed om de stemming erin te houden.

Op 20 Melissa Etheridge, nu eens niet met een scheurende rocker, maar met een meer ingehouden ballad, en dat klinkt ook best fijn op zijn tijd. Het liedje is echter niet echt blijven hangen.

Op 23 Orbital met The box, hun enige entry in mijn top 40. Genoteerd werd uiteraard de single versie van ruim 4 minuten, een instrumentaal stukje muziek met sfeervolle (gitaar?)klanken; het kwam mij niet meer bekend voor toen ik het beluisterde.

Op 36 het debuut (in mijn lijst) van de Fun Lovin' Criminals, met Scooby snacks, de verwijzing uiteraard naar de koekjes waar Scooby Doo dol op was. Opvallend zijn de 'hoorspelfragmenten' waarin een vrouw nogal tekeer gaat, en verder zowel rap als zang in een herkenbaar refrein.

En op 37 Beck met Where it's at, twee jaar na Loser het bewijs dat Beck een blijvertje was. Met subtiele toetsen en vervolgens een stevig ritme klinkt dit zowel ouderwets als modern; verder komen er allerlei productionele trucjes en aparte geluiden langs; het is duidelijk dat Beck aan creatief vermogen geen gebrek had (en ook een van de productiefste muzikanten zou worden).

week 25 voor 1996 waarin de hele top 5 blijft staan, van wie gaat de concurrentie komen? Vier binnenkomers deze week.
Bis als hoogste binnenkomer met een nummer waarin ze de vloer aanvegen met nep-indielabels zoals in de 90s best veel voor kwamen, een major die een band een eigen label geeft zodat het meetelt voor de indielijst, als de band slaagt de major er voordeel van heeft en als het mislukt alleen het sublabel failliet kan laten gaan. En maar tig versies van 1 single uitbrengen, allemaal ltd edition natuurlijk. Wat dat betreft zou het een sneer naar Sleeper (al is Echobelly een beter voorveeld) kunnen zijn maar ik geloof niet dat ze een bepaalde band in gedachten hebben, meer het concept )en er zijn veel meer namen te bedenken). Bis zou zelf na deze single tekenen bij Wiiija trouwens en in de US bij Grand Royal.
Beck met Where It's At, volgens mij had ik er destijds niet altijd zin in maar inmiddels vind ik het toch wel een erg goed nummer. Een weekje eerder dan gepland in m'n lijst door de binnenkomst bij ranboy.
Strangelove met hun 2e notering bij mij, britpop met een toefje (misschien wel 2 toefjes) jangle.
The Cure zat niet in hun beste periode destijds maar Mint Car is toch weer wat herkenbaarder dan de vorige single. Toch ligt het wel erg ver van hun Pornography/Faith muziek en zelfs van hun Wish singles.

2 zeer expliciete tracks komen binnen, de megahit van Toni Braxton waar ik hier weer weinig medestanders voor ga verwachten, meer hiphop invloed en even weg van de ballads als luid dit wel de succesvolste periode Secrets in met een nog grotere hit. In de tekst worden er geen doekjes om gewonden.

Dat doet KD Lang ook niet, de ontdekking na wat graafwerk afgelopen week, kwam bij toeval langs dit, een track van een album uit 1995 maar de single werd in mei 1996 uitgebracht, het gaat wel om deze Tony Maserati remix die zwierig en prikkelend klinkt en me deed denken aan ouder werk van Wendy & Lisa, al lang geen countrypop meer, heel misschien dat ranja en herman dit kunnen waarderen.

Bij herman heb ik Nada Surf ook gejat, dat herinnert me aan TMF, geen idee waarom.
Robert Miles doet een copy paste, alleen zit bij Fable ook een vocal als je dat wil die het net wat laat afwijken

5 nieuwe plaatjes, waarvan 4 alternatieve. Hoogste nieuwe is voor Guided by Voices, een band die zijn albums steevast volpropt met veel korte liedjes. Vaak blijft het merendeel daarvan bij mij niet echt hangen, maar dit vind ik dan wel weer een van de sterkste nummers van hun album uit 1996 (55 minuten, 24 liedjes). Blij verrast dat dit een single was.

Nil Lara kende ik alleen van de cd World of Noise die destijds bij OOR zat. Dat nummer ben ik al lang en breed vergeten, maar dit is een toffe plaat. Typisch 90s alternative waar ik niet heel snel een vinger op kan leggen. Beetje Peppers, beetje Beck, beetje Cracker.

Daryll-Ann kende ik vooral van latere nummers en later solowerk van de leden. Hun album uit deze periode schijnt heel goed te zijn, maar heb ik nooit gehoord. Dit nummer kende ik ook niet, maar heeft me wel overtuigd. Erg mooie rustige jangle pop.

Jack is britpop, dit nummer zit een klein beetje in de Suede/Marion-hoek voor mijn gevoel, maar de zanger is wat masculiener.

Tenslotte EBTG. Elke keer als ik dit nummer hoor vind ik het erg mooi, maar desondanks blijft het niet echt hangen. Ik ben benieuwd of dat nog komt.

Meesterwerk. Een van de beste Nederlandse platen ooit. Op deze plaat hoor je het originele, tergende geluid van een band die ooit als jonge honden uit de startblokken vloog met vol vertrouwen in een internationale toekomst gelijk een onvervalste jongensdroom die helaas nooit uitkwam en de eerste realisatie van die gebarsten bubbel is vertolkt op Weeps dat klinkt als surfrock met een dikke rouwrand. Jelle en Anne waren hier op hun creatieve hoogtepunt en eigenlijk is het einde van Daryll-Ann hier ook al hoorbaar, ook al duurde het nog 3 platen voordat het definitief werd. Markeert ook het begin van het befaamde Excelsior Recordings, samen met Ceasar, Johan, Scram C Baby & Benjamin B.

Het verschil met de nummer 2, A Design For Life van de Manic Street Preachers (johan de witt #2, ranboy #2, iamsander #4, 50tracks #14) is nog maar 2 punten. Maar helaas voor hen is dat meer omdat Ash net wat sneller punten verliest.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

07 | deep blue something - breakfast at tiffany's
Oorspronkelijk uit 1994 en nu in een opnieuw opgenomen versie een hit in de gezamenlijke top 20. Een erg fijn nummer natuurlijk, al lees ik dat het ook eens gekozen is als één na slechtste nummer ooit dat uit Texas komt, na Ice Ice Baby van Vanilla Ice.

12 | fugees - killing me softly
De Fugees coveren met veel succes het nummer van Roberta Flack. Of eigenlijk van Lori Lieberman. Deze versie van de Fugees is opgebouwd rond een sample uit Bonita Applebum van A Tribe Called Quest. Dat was mij niet eerder opgevallen, ook al omdat dat nummer voor mij bekender is in een andere remix (die weer gebaseerd op Carly Simon’s Why). Maar inderdaad, ik hoor het nu.

13 | fun lovin' criminals - scooby snacks
37% van de royalty's van deze plaat gaan naar Quentin Tarantino vanwege het gebruik van samples uit Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. In Europa werd het nummer, buiten de UK en Ierland, alleen een succes in Nederland in IJsland. In IJsland werd het ook een grote hit, dus als je ooit daar naar een 90s feest gaat dan komt deze waarschijnlijk voorbij.

15 | trash can sinatras - twisted and bent
De derde single van A Happy Pocket, die weer erg Brits klinkt.

18 | strangelove - beautiful alone
De laatste nieuwe binnenkomer valt onder Britpop. Voorheen voor mij onbekend, maar het klinkt goed. Over het nummer heb ik niet veel te melden. Wel interessant is dat ze vorig jaar – 1995 – in het voorprogramma van de Manic Street Preachers speelden en nu in dat van Suede. Ze zijn sowieso close met Suede, vanaf 2001 is de gitarist van Strangelove zelfs drie jaar lang de gitarist van Suede.

Een beetje zomers, vrolijk en een rockachtig deuntje. Dat moet wel een single zijn van de Super Furry Animals. En inderdaad. Heerlijke song verder.

En verder voor elck wat wils. Ik hoor oudjes die buitengewoon voorzichtig en professioneel te werk gaan. Dus zeker geen herrie bij de Eagles en Eric Clapton. Wel sterke nummers. Generatiegenoot Neil Young is daarentegen weer eens op oorlogspad met Crazy Horse. Dat betekent dat in ieder geval de akoestische gitaren thuis zijn gelaten. En meer dan 7 minuten elektrisch. Moet ik daar nog meer aan toevoegen.

Ash heeft een alleraardigste nieuwe single en Shakespeare's sister eigenlijk idem. De laatste is niet echt een band die vaak mijn lijst bezoekt. Maar I can drive is een mooie uitzondering.

Inmiddels ben ik 30 geworden .

Op 18 de nieuwe Skunk Anansie, getiteld Charity De band begint al flink op stoom te komen, en zal zo nog een paar jaar doorgaan, met het maken van intense, stevig rockende maar toch balladachtige songs, altijd vol overgave gezongen door Skin, en daardoor toch toegankelijk voor een redelijk groot publiek.

Op 20 wordt de allang bestaande tune van de serie Mission : impossible nieuw leven ingeblazen, nota bene door de twee minst genoemde U2-leden, Adam Clayton en Larry Mullen. De melodie wordt de jaren 90 ingetrokken, met behoud natuurlijk van de herkenbare sound. De film werd een groot succes (met Tom Cruise), maar ook deze track werd een flinke top 40-hit. Grappig dat 25 jaar later Bono weer in de top 3 van de NL top 40 staat...

Queen is inmiddels al in blessuretijd bezig, maar dat leverde toch al wat sterke singles op. Let me live is niet echt een klassieker geworden (ik was hem alweer vergeten), heeft wel alle kenmerkende Queen-geluiden, en, wel opvallend, drie apart zingende zangers: Freddie, Brian en Roger. Het haalt nog net de NL top 40.

Op 34 alweer een sfeervolle bijdrage aan het ESF van Ierland, zangeres Eimear Quinn, die op The voice weer Keltische en middeleeuwse elementen mengt met een aansprekend refrein. Opvallend wel dat deze pas eind juni binnenkomt; is het festival toen wat laat gehouden? Of had deze meer tijd nodig om te scoren? De top 40 werd ook ruim gehaald.

En omdat in mijn top 40 (bijna) alle smaken langskomen, als laatste entry Andrea Bocelli, opnieuw zingend als een engel en met Per amore weer een bijna klassiek Italiaans lied met vooral sfeerverhogend toetsenwerk.
