Week 26 voor 1996 waar Maria McKee op 1 mag, maar voor hoe lang? Er is niet veel concurrentie maar toch wel een paar flinke stijgers in de lijst.
Ash heeft inmiddels een aardig rijtje single van het doorbraakalbum afgeleverd, dit is de laatste en volgens mij zo'n beetje de bekendste in Nederland ondanks dat ook deze geen tipparade haalde. Niet m'n favoriet van het album maar ach, het blijft Ash.
Melissa Etheridge met de 3e single van haar Little Secret album, een echt Etheridge midtempo nummer, meeslepend en vol passie.
Strike komt deze week in de UK charts binnen, vaak luister ik daarvan wel wat ik niet ken en soms ontdek ik nog wat leuke (brit)pop. Vaker is het dance en ben ik daar snel klaar mee, heel soms is het dance en spreekt dat toch aan. Dit is een uit die laatst ecategorie. Ergens tussen Whigfield en Sunscreem, best ok; gaan we die nog bij AngeloV zien?.

dEUS is de klapper van de week met Theme From Turnpike. Ik moet zeggen dat ik dEUS destijds net niet op de radar had, dat kwam pas met de single hierna. Maar ik heb de video alsnog vaak gezien, omdat hij op de officiële VHS van Trainspotting (mijn meest geziene film aller tijden, al is de laatste keer alweer 20 jaar terug) stond.

Ook wel grappig dat Sam Louwyck jaren later nog in de speelfilm van Tom Barman (Any Way The Wind Blows) zou spelen.
Verder verrast Patti Smith me ook wel positief. Had geen idee dat zij in 1996 nog iets anders had gedaan dan 'E-Bow the Letter', maar dit is echt een heel goed nummer ook.
Soul Coughing vond ik wel leuk, beetje jazz met hiphop. Maar dit soort getergde zang is eigenlijk heel erg 90s, een band als Korn is eigenlijk niet zo heel ver weg.
Underworld ook alweer met een nieuwe. Op het album is dit wel echt een klapper, als single voelt ie eigenlijk wat kort en onaf, al duurt ie wel 5/6 minuten.
Los Planetas is een Spaanse baand. Ik versta er geen woord van, maar het gitaarwerk klinkt heel erg fris jangle poppy.

Tattva is een catchier opvolger voor Grateful when you're dead en komt terecht hoog binnen.
Verder de zoveelste 1996 remix, nu voor Alison Limerick-1996 was wel een recyclejaar wat dat betreft.
En EBTG met Wrong, die mij minder beklijft dan Walking wounded, de platenmaatschappij aast hier duidelijk op een 2e Missing met Todd Terry weer achter de knoppen.

Nieuw binnen op 1! Dat gebeurt niet iedere week. Nada Surf doet het met Popular (50tracks #1, Dim #2, herman #12, johan de witt #13, musician #16, pureshores #20). Naast Nada surf komen nog drie andere platen meteen binnen in de top 10. Dat is weer eens wat anders dan een volledige top 6 die gelijk blijft, zoals vorige week.

01 | nada surf – popular
Popular bestaat uit stukken tekst uit Penny's Guide to Teen-Age Charm and Popularity, een boek met etiquettetips voor tieners. Dat boek is geschreven door Gloria Winters, die in de jaren 50 en 60 in Amerika bekend was als Penny King in een westernserie waar ik nooit van gehoord heb. In die serie was ze blijkbaar erg goed gemanierd, vandaar die Penny dus in de titel. Nada Surf brengt het met sarcasme en voegt er een eigen refrein aan toe. Nada Surf bestond in 1996 al 5 jaar en nu 25 jaar later bestaan ze nog steeds.
07 | pianoman – blurred
Dance op nummer van Pianoman. Of The Pianoman als je in 1995 al de 12” kocht. Het nummer is gebaseerd op een sample van Girls & Boys van Blur en de piano uit Better Days van Jimi Polo. Die laatste is uit 1989 en kende ik nog niet, maar lijkt een verborgen klassieker die doet denken aan Promised Land van Joe Smooth.
09 | kula shaker – tattva
Kula Shaker staat nog op 6 met Grateful When You’re Dead, maar op 9 komt de opvolger al binnen. Deze single was in 1995 al een klein hitje in de UK (#96) en was hun debuutsingle. In 1995 was het een remix (Lucky 13 Mix) en dit keer in de herkansing, nadat Grateful When You’re Dead de top 40 wist te halen in de UK. Dit keer wordt het wel een grote hit en de start van het grote succes van Kula Shaker, dat nog tot 1998 blijft.
10 | beck - where it’s at
De eerste single van het derde album van Beck, Odelay, komt binnen op 10. Het nummer bevat gezongen stukjes uit verschillende bronnen, maar de meesten komen uit een voorlichtingsfilm over seks met de titel Sex For Teens (Where It’s At). In het nummer zitten meer gezongen samples, waaronder ‘We’ve Got Two Turntables And A Microphone van Mantronix. Die laatste kende ik nog niet en net als de eerder genoemde Jimi Polo bij Pianoman is het een nummer dat ik meteen ook op mijn eigen playlist heb gezet.

Op 1 een nummer dat een boek citeert, op 7 een nummer gebaseerd op twee grote hits, op 8 een nummer een nummer met referenties aan het Hindoeïsme, op 10 een nummer met teksten uit een voorlichtingsfilm over seks en op 16: een nummer dat refereert aan een gedicht uit 1911. Ik kopieer: And Man knows it! Knows, moreover, that the Woman that God gave him / Must command but may not govern -- shall enthral but not enslave him. / And She knows, because She warns him, and Her instincts never fail, / That the Female of Her Species is more deadly than the Male. Dat is tenminste het laatste stuk van een gedicht van Rudyard Kipling. Het nummer van space is verder een eerbetoon aan de toen al overleden vader van de zanger van Space, die de muzieksmaak van zijn zoon niet kon waarderen. Vandaar dat ze dit nummer in de stijl van artiesten als Perry Como en Frank Sinatra hebben geschreven.

Wat Where It's At betreft, in het nummer komt ook een sample voor van een stem die zegt "What about those who swing both ways, A.C./D.C.'s?". Blijkbaar komt dit van een Nederlandse radiodj.

Week 27 voor 1996 waarin ik een beetje opruiming kan houden met 7 binnenkomers. Vaak wacht ik nog een weekje als een single op donderdag of vrijdag net uitgekomen is maar in dit geval toch de hoogste 2 binnenkomers er meteen maar in. Nadeel is wel dat ik volgende week dan misschien weer weinig nieuws heb. Maar de Uk charts blijven ook een goede bron zoals voor de onderste 2 binnenkomers.
Sleeper met hun 3e single van het 2e album, Nice Guy Eddie werd net als de vorige single top 10 in de UK, als enige 2 single van de band (de albums haalden wel top 5).
Shampoo met een nieuwe single, nog niemand had van de spice girls gehoord; de tern 'girl power' was wel al voorbij gekomen in een Bikini Kill fanzine maar of de dames die gelezen hebben? In elk geval heet hun single wel Girl Power en bevat verder alles wat je van Shampoo mag verwachten.
Fu Manchu heb ik uit de Outlaw lijstjes, Kyuss relatie maar minder dan ik dacht, Brant Bjork en Scott Reader speelden beide in deze band maar niet tegelijk en ook nog niet op het album waar deze single vandaan komt. Afgezien daarvan is de sound wel behoorlijk overeenkomend en daar gaat het om.
Linoleum met de opvolger van Dissent, weer een lekker noisy plaatje waarbij de 7" in een echt linoleumhoes is verschenen.
Kula Shaker met Tattva, zweverig plaatje en hun doorbraak naar het grote publiek.
The Gyres komen met hun opvolger van Popcop en klinkt muzikaal weer net zo oasis-achtig, qua zang niet.
Scarlet komt al met hun 3e notering bij mij. Dit nummer staat op hun 2e album en dat staat niet op spotify helaas.

Dat gaat niet lang meer duren. Half juli 1996 was ik op vakantie in Engeland en daar hoorde ik al regelmatig Wannabe voorbij komen in de lokale discotheek. Iedereen was helemaal gek van dit nummer, voor mij was het toen nog nieuw. Ik heb hem nu verder nog nergens voorbij zien komen in charts e.d.

Nee charts pas 20-7 in de UK. releasedatum staat op 8-7 volgens UMD. Dus ja, half juli kan prima

Op 21 de opvolger van One of us van Joan Osborne, St. Teresa. En 21 is een opmerkelijke binnenkomst, want daarmee is direct de hoogste positie van de bekende voorganger geëvenaard. De nieuwe was ik wel totaal vergeten, maar bij beluistering moet ik mijzelf (van 25 jaar eerder) helemaal gelijk geven: veel beter dan het ook toen al wat flauwe en grijsgedraaide One of us. Het klinkt veel spannender, persoonlijker en muzikaler (en totaal niet herkenbaar als een opvolgsingle).
Op 29 alweer de nieuwe Ash, terwijl voorganger Goldfinger nog fier op 1 staat. Oh yeah is ook zo'n heerlijke indie poprocksingle die meteen op volle kracht gaat en waarvan de melodie weer super lekker is en licht melancholisch. Zelden een band meegemaakt waarvan de eerste twee singles (die ik kende) zo goed waren.
Op 30 een typische nineties band: Alice in Chains, met Again. De gitaren zitten soms al tegen metal aan, de zang is weer uit duizenden herkenbaar, en getergd is opnieuw een term die op de sfeer van toepassing is.
Eric Clapton tapt dan weer uit een heel ander vaatje. Op Change the world (35) klinkt hij beheerst en ervaren, subtiele gitaartjes, wereldverbeterende teksten (letterlijk) en ditmaal ook een sterk refrein. De man was toen overigens al 51 en wist hiermee nog eenmaal de NL top 40 te halen (nr. 39).
En op 36 Gary Barlow met Forever love. Het is nu nauwelijks nog voorstelbaar, maar toen werd Gary Barlow als het Take That-lid beschouwd dat de meest succesvolle solocarrière zou krijgen. Robbie Williams was al een jaar eerder uit de band gezet, en had nog geen solohit gescoord. En Gary was ook degene die de meeste van de non-covers van Take That! geschreven had. Forever love is een behoorlijk dramatische piano ballad, zeer geschikt om bij te zwijmelen, maar toch ook een fijne melodielijn. Spijtig dat hij na dit prima begin niet meer iets vergelijkbaars zou maken (of het zou zijn na de wederopstanding van Take That!, vele jaren later).

Tori Amos' Professional Widow is door de remixmangel gehaald door Armand van Helden, die er een stomende houseplaat van heeft gemaakt. Het heeft beide geen windeieren gelegd, volgens mij.
Verder een hoop gitaarwerk uit allerlei windhoeken: Ash (VK) komt met de opvolger van Oh Yeah, die ik ongeveer even goed vind als Goldfinger (maar minder dan Girl From Mars). De overkant van de oceaan brengt ons de fijne alternatieve rock van Tonic (VS) en de Matthew Good Band (Canada). Tonic had een paar geweldige hits (op Kink FM), waar dit er een van was, maar daarna heb ik nooit meer van ze gehoord. Van de Matthew Good Band had ik destijds dan weer niet gehoord, ik heb dit nummer pas een week of 4 geleden ontdekt. Onze benedenburen van K's Choice scoren tenslotte met alweer de derde single van Paradise in Me en ik denk de meest venijnige. Maar er komen er nog een paar aan.
Death in Vegas mag de rijen sluiten. De eerste 2 albums heb ik grijsgedraaid en zeker ook Dirt, maar anno nu vind ik Dirt toch wat tegenvallen. Net iets te weinig ontwikkeling in het nummer. Maar misschien denk ik er over een paar weken wel weer anders over.

De hoogste binnenkomer is voor Maria McKee. Over het nummer is verder weinig informatie te vinden, dus je moet het doen met de video helemaal bovenaan dit bericht.

Op 17 nog een nummer waarover weinig informatie te vinden is. Volgens mij is het nooit een single geweest. Dan maar iets over Daryll-Ann. De band begon in 1988 toen de bandleden nog op de middelbare school zaten. In 1991 verscheen hun eerste EP en in 1992 hun eerste album. Omdat ze niet tevreden zijn over die plaat besluiten ze om vol voor een leven als muzikant te gaan. Niet lang daarna komt een demo in Engeland terecht en daar zijn ze zo onder de indruk dat ze bij een Engelse platenmaatschappij tekenen. Melody Maker roept zelfs één van hun singles uit tot single van de week. Dat gebeurt weer in 1995, als ook hun nieuwe album goed ontvangen wordt in de Engelse pers. De plaat wordt ook uitgebracht in de VS. Maar helaas, de verkoop valt tegen en de platenmaatschappij komt in geldproblemen. Zo komen ze in 1996 bij het nieuwe Nederlandse Excelsiorlabel en als gevolg daarvan is daar het nummer dat deze week nieuw binnenkomt op 17.

Een cover van Fresh van Kool & The Gang’s Fresh, met ook een grote rol voor Ooh Boy van Rose Royce. Beat System komt uit Duitsland en de rapper is Tony T, een geboren Engelsman. Die Tony T kom je vandaag de dag ook nog veel tegen in de Duitse, Oostenrijkse en Zwitserse dancelijsten. Op Spotify zie ik dat hij in 2021 al 13 nummers heeft uitgebracht.
