De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

20 | mazzy star - flowers in december
Maar één binnenkomer deze week: Mazzy Star. De oprichters zijn David Roback en Hope Sandoval. David Roback zat eerder in een band met Susanna Hoffs, die deze week op 7 staat in de tipparade. Hope Sandoval wordt genoemd als inspiratiebron voor Lana Del Rey, omdat ze beiden binnen het genre ‘L.A. noir’ vallen. Mazzy Star houdt er volgend jaar alweer mee op omdat ze niet willen toegeven aan de wens van hun platenmaatschappij om commerciëler te worden. Pas in 2011 komen ze weer bij elkaar, om vervolgens in 2013 nog een vrij succesvol album uit te brengen. Daarna werd het weer stil rond ze. In 2018 kwamen ze nog even in het nieuws doordat fans wegliepen bij hun show omdat de band in het halfdonker optrad, wat de voorkeur is van Hope Sandoval, die uit verlegenheid ook niet praat met het publiek. David Roback is in 2020 overleden, dus een nieuwe plaat van Mazzy Star zal er waarschijnlijk niet meer komen.

Op 22 vinden we als hoogste nieuwe Metallica met Mama said. Hierbij gaan ze op de akoestische, zelfs gevoelige toer, wat wel begrijpelijk is met zo'n onderwerp. Hoewel het toch weer een goeie plaat is, haalt deze de top 40 niet, en langzaam wordt Metallica minder succesvol.

Op 24 The Black Crowes die het bij mij in deze jaren altijd wel goed doen, maar Blackberry vind ik toch wat minder sterk dan zijn voorgangers, het klinkt wat kaler en minder muzikaal, al is de band en vooral de zang natuurlijk uit duizenden herkenbaar.

Op 35 komt Tori Amos binnen met Professional widow. Ik vermoed dat dit al meteen de veel bekendere remix van Armand van Helden (waar ken ik die naam toch van?) was, en niet de originele albumopname. Als ik die laatste beluister, komt het mij niet bekend voor. De remix zorgde voor de grootste hit van Tori in NL, al zou je kunnen zeggen dat er maar weinig van het origineel in de remix terecht is gekomen. Er wordt verondersteld dat Courtney Love (van Hole, en van Kurt Cobain natuurlijk) de titelfiguur is.

Op 37 zien we Neneh Cherry met Kootchi, waarin ze zich de longen uit het lijf schreeuwt, maar een sterk liedje kan ik het niet noemen.

En op 39 komt Enigma nog eenmaal binnen met weer zo'n typische Enigmatitel: Beyond the invisible. Het concept is weer hetzelfde: wereldmuziekachtige klanken, indringende vrouwenstemmen, een wat gebruikelijker zangstukje van een mannelijke zangstem, ook wat semiklassieke vocalen en als opvulling zelfs wat van die Bulgaarse vrouwenkoor-fragmenten. En natuurlijk een felgekleurde clip. Niet vervelend hoor, maar ook niet echt origineel meer.

Wild mood Swings is niet het meest bejubelde album van de Cure. Ergo, het wordt als een wat ergerlijke vreemde eend in de bijt gezien. Maar ik denk dat ik er maar eens achteraan ga. Merkwaardig genoeg heb ik vrijwel alles aan studiowerk van The Cure wel in huis. Maar deze is er nooit van gekomen. De reacties waren dus ook niet van dien aard er hard voor te lopen. Maar volgens mij heb ik al een aantal prima singles van het album voorbij horen komen. Enigszins weird, toegegeven, maar aan de andere kant ook wel weer sterk. Ik vind het onderschat.

Kula Shaker weer terug: ook één van de leukste bands van 1996. Met Shed Seven en Skunk Anansie. Powderfinger brengt de gebruikelijke stevigheid. Waar de Screaming Trees deze week worden verkozen boven de nieuwe van Radiohead en de Smashin' Pumpkens hun vorige single Muzzle zien verdwijnen om er met een nieuwe voor in de plaats te komen. Eens kijken of die kan worden overtroffen.

Pearl Jam wint van iedereen, ik had het nummer haast een beetje over het hoofd gezien. Het is ook geen hit geworden voor PJ. Wat vreemd, Hail Hail rockt er lekker op los.

Veel elektronisch spul uit allerlei windhoeken. Life in Mono van het Londense Mono is een grote triphopfavoriet, heb het altijd al een geweldig nummer gevonden. Verder wel een groep waar nooit meer iets van vernomen is, al heeft de zangeres nog wel een plaat gemaakt met Robin Guthrie. Uit hetzelfde land komt Fluke, jarenlange leverancier van big beat, techno e.d., in het kielzog van grote namen als Orbital en Underworld. Voor zover ik ze ken is dit hun beste en bekendste nummer.

Jimi Tenor uit Finland was typisch zo'n naam die ik uit OOR kende, maar waar ik tot voor kort geen actieve muzikale herinnering aan had. Nu wel, lekker pompende technotrack is dit, met een origineel geluid. Een soort technoswing lijkt het wel.

Het Parijse Motorbass -project van Etienne de Crécy en Philippe Zdar (RIP)- was met Daft Punk een van de artiesten die Frankrijk op de wereldkaart zette met elektronische dansmuziek. Dit is een lange repetitieve single waarin stiekem van alles gebeurt. Heerlijke track.

Verder nog wat gitaarwerk uit de VS: Mazzy Star ken ik van de vorige albums die ik erg mooi vind. Nu ook maar eens het album uit deze periode opzoeken. Flowers in December belooft alvast meer van hetzelfde, en dat is in dit geval positief.

The Heads is gewoon Talking Heads, maar dan zonder David Byrne. Voor de gelegenheid hebben ze andere vocalisten gezocht, zoals mw. Napolitano van Concrete Blonde. Het klinkt hierdoor meer als een CB dan TH nummer, maar dat is zeker niet erg. Zag ook nog een single met Shaun Ryder voorbij komen, maar die vond ik niet best.

Hun track Silicone vind ik nog beter, voor 1997 alvast een tip, Life in mono is een beetje kitscheriger in mijn oren al stijgt ie bij mij hard deze week.

week 46 voor1996 met nu maar wel Nada Surf op 1 en slechts 3 binnenkomers. Voor sommige vind ik het persoonlijk nog te vroeg.
The Prodigy met de opvolger van Firestarter en ik heb deze altijd beter gevonden dan eerstgenoemde. Eigenlijk verreweg m'n favoriete niet-Jilted song van de band. Dat deze gelijk was met Setting Sun staat me eigenlijk ook nog wel wat van bij. Die heb ik vast regelmatig na elkaar gehoord/gedraaid.
Kenickie staat nog met hun vorige genoteerd maar de nieuwe is erl, Millionaire Sweeper iets minder puntig dan Punka, gaat meer richting britpop
Posh had ik tot een aantal weken geleden nog nooit van gehoord. Een erg engels pop/rock nummer.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

De hoogste binnenkomer is een nummer over niks (‘discount orgies’, ‘bleeding noses’, ‘garbage man trees’ en ‘stealing kisses from the leprous faces’, om wat teksten te quoten). Beck maakte er later nog een grap over toen hij als meedeed aan een aflevering van Futurama, waar hij als zichzelf een drie uur durende versie van dit nummer speelde (zie Futurama: Beck and Bender - YouTube. Het nummer is gebaseerd op samples, waaronder eentje van een nummer van Them, de band van Van Morrison. Hoewel dat eigenlijk geen sample is, maar een nagespeelde riff door Beck zelf.

15 |robert miles / maria nayler - one & one
Robert Miles komt met een cover van een nummer van de Poolse Edyta Górniak, die je nog kent als de allereerste deelnemer aan het Songfestival voor Polen in 1994. Succesvol ook, want ze werd tweede. One & One komt uit 1996, maar Robert Miles was haar voor met het uitbrengen van dit nummer, want dat deed zij pas in 1997. Vast in goed overleg natuurlijk. De versie van Robert Miles was wel veel succesvoller en als ik beide versies hoor dan is zijn versie ook net iets beter. Het succes komt natuurlijk ook door de zang van de Engelse Maria Nayler, die een (ik quote Wikipedia) ethereal quality aan het nummer geeft.

Een liedje over een kind dat met vuurwerk Matchboxautootjes opblaast. Dat brengt herinneringen terug aan de tijd dat je net te oud werd voor autootjes en net oud genoeg was om rotjes te kopen. Of wat nog beter was: sterretjes verkruimelen en die in een autootje stoppen. Mooie tijden. De Presidents of the USA weten er een een hit van te maken.

Daarna kreeg je op weer wat oudere leeftijd spijt van het vernielen van je matchboxautootjes, en kocht je ze tweedehands terug op een autootjesbeurs.

De nieuwe binnenkomers van Mansun en Skunk Anansie komen weer ver boven de anderen uit. En is dat dan heel erg verrassend, eigenlijk niet. Ze zitten even in een geweldige flow momenteel en dan ben je op je best.

Dat neemt niet weg, dat ook de nieuwe van Metallica erg mee kan vallen, daar hoef je echt het geluid niet voor af te zetten of te swichten. Ook de Stone Temple Pilots en de Cardigans kennen prima nieuwe singles.
Ze moeten wel even hun best doen om behoorlijk wat hogerop te komen.

week 47 voor 1996 waarin niet heel veel spannends gebeurt behalve dat the Prodigy flink doorstijgt. 4 binnenkomers dit keer.
Kelley Deal is natuurlijk bekend als de tweelingzus van Kim waarmee ze samen speelt in de Breeders. In 1996 maakt ze ook een album de naam Kelly Deal 6000 (in 97 nog een trouwens). Dat het klinkt als Breeders zal niemand verbazen.
Kula Shaker komt met Govinda, na Tattva weer een nummer dat erg door indiase muziek is beïnvloedt. Toch vind ik deze veel beter dan Tattva. Ok, het liefst hoor ik ze toch zoals in Hey Dude en Hush maar dit is wel erg lekker psychedelisch.
De kersthit van het jaar komt komende week in de tipparade binnen, bij mij nu alvast, ik had toen het album al denk ik. Ballad die No Doubt van de alternatieve clubs naar primetime MTV bracht; stond in Nederland de laatste week van 96 en heel januari 97 op 1.
Possibly Maybe is niet m'n favoriet van Björk maar ik heb er toch wel ruimte voor, dus mag ook in m'n lijst en misschien groeit-ie nog want in eerste instantie toen ik de titel zag dacht ik dat ik die veel beter vond.

Omdat we I want you hier al voorbij zagen komen en dat pas in 1997 een hit was in Nederland, pak ik nu dan ook single To the moon and back, die van Anouk heb ik kennelijk nooit meegekregen en is niet overplayed, dus dit klinkt lekker fris.

Republica kwam ook al voorbij met Ready to go, wat ik ook met 1997 associeer, dus dan maar een kliekje van daarvoor in de herkansing.

Nou ja, 'we'... ja ok ik zag ze wel langskomen bij anderen maar ik wacht wel een jaar voor mijn lijst

Suede staat nu 3 weken op 1, er lijken wel wat troonpretendenten op 2 en 3 maar dat is nog geen uitgemaakte zaak.

Bush scoort de hoogste nieuwe op 20 met Swallowed, in retrospect het typische Bush-geluid maar wel een erg simpel refrein; wel natuurlijk de gruizige stem van Gavin Rossdale om het wat omhoog te tillen.

Op 23 ook Pearl Jam, met een wat rechttoe-rechtaan rocker, niet mijn favoriete soort PJ song, maar altijd wel de moeite waard door de stem van Eddie Vedder.

Op 31 weer zo'n fijne rapplaat van trio Bone Thugs 'n Harmony, die altijd een snelle flow hebben (heet dat zo?) en redelijk mellow instrumentatie; het bevalt mij altijd wel, al hoor je dit helaas nooit meer op de radio.

Op 34 Amanda Marshall (die van Beautiful goodbye) met opnieuw een stevig ingezongen ballad, Let it rain. Ze heeft een mooie stem, maar het liedje heeft te weinig opmerkelijks om het vaker te willen draaien.

Op 36 vinden we De Scene met Slapen, dromen, zweten, nu eens een intense maar ingehouden akoestische song met spaarzame begeleiding, maar wel die direct aangrijpende teksten en stem van bard Thé Lau.

En volgende week komt de beste song van Neerlands meest succesvolle zanger ooit binnen...
