Ik zag To The Moon and Back al charten in Australië, dus die pak ik ook mee in mijn tiplijst. Maar denk niet dat 'ie bij mij al binnenkomt in de top 40. Die van Anouk viel me ook alleszins mee, heb hem destijds ook niet of nauwelijks gehoord, maar in '96 volgde ik de hitlijsten ook helemaal niet meer.

Afgelopen week teruggekomen van vakantie en daarin wat minder muziek geluisterd. Onderweg wel weer eens Coming Up van Suede en zeker de eerste helft daarvan is toch wel erg goed. En in albumcontext werken de uptempo singles ook veel beter.

In de Britse charts zag ik ook Tricky expliciet genoemd worden bij Garbage' Milk, dus die versie noem ik hier ook maar. Is gewoon de Siren Mix eigenlijk, maar dan met extra vocalen. Had net even mijn map erbij en zag dat Milk 25 jaar geleden zelfs op #1 stond bij mij, mooie tijden voor Garbage. In januari komt ook #1 Crush al uit, die gaat bij mij ook weer hoge ogen gooien.

Helemaal nieuw:
- Johan: nooit zo idolaat van geweest, maar een paar nummers zijn wel erg goed. Zo ook dit Swing, prachtig nummer en de beste Excelsior-song tot nu toe. Maar er gaan er nog een hoop komen...
- Alanis Morissette met de zoveelste single van Jagged Little Pill. Een van de betere, eigenlijk is dit haar nummer dat me door de jaren heen het meest is bijgebleven, vooral door de rake tekst.
- The Cranberries' When You're Gone zei me niets meer en toen ik hem weer hoorde had ik niet verwacht dat 'ie mijn lijst zou halen. Het begint een beetje kinderlijk, maar gaandeweg kruipt het nummer wel onder de huid. De tekst heeft ook wel een heel andere lading gekregen nu Dolores er zelf niet meer is, zeker omdat ze het zo overtuigend zingt.
- Sheryl Crow bracht een paar jaar lang de ene na de andere leuke single uit, deze mag er ook nog steeds erg zijn. Opgewekt en heerlijk aanstekelijk.
- BT's Blue Skies zei me niets, maar overtuigde eigenlijk meteen. Heerlijke progressieve houseplaat met vocalen van Tori Amos. En haar stem past ook geweldig bij deze muziek.
- Disco Dasco van Bubble Solution zei me helemaal niets, maar is wel een hele fijne discohouseplaat, met een sample van de Michael Zager Band's Let's All Chant (ze hadden de inspiratie vast van Gusto). Een van de dj's erachter was ook betrokken bij A.I.R. Miles, The Course en Euromasters, allen mij wel bekend van top40-hits.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

12 | fountains of wayne - radiation vibe
De allereerste single van Fountains of Wayne. De leden Adam Schlesinger en Chris Collingwood kenden elkaar al en schreven al nummers, maar nadat ze een tijdje gestopt waren met het schrijven van nummers was het dit nummer dat ervoor zorgde dat er weer geloof kwam dat ze op de goede weg waren. Oorspronkelijk hadden ze nog andere bandnamen, zoals het veel betere ‘Three Men Who When Standing Side by Side Have a Wingspan of Over Twelve Feet’, maar uiteindelijk vernoemden ze zichzelf naar een tuinornamentenwinkel uit de plaats Wayne (geen linkje naar die winkel, sinds 2009 bestaan ze niet meer). Adam Schlesinger overleef vorig jaar aan corona in een New York’s ziekenhuis, toen corona daar op zijn heftigst was.

13 | shed seven - chasing rainbows
Een nummer over heimwee, geschreven tijdens een toer van de band door Duitsland. Dit nummer is 25 jaar oud, zoals alle nummers in de top 20, maar Shed Seven viert dit nummer met twee gratis nieuwe versies, die je hier kunt downloaden: Shed Seven :: Official Website - Chasing Rainbows - shedseven.com. In het kader van het jubileum is Shed Seven ook op zoek gegaan naar de man die op de originele cover staat. Hij ging akkoord om de foto’s 25 jaar later opnieuw te doen, dus op dezelfde site zie je die foto’s ook.

18 | susanna hoffs - all i want
Een cover van een hit (of een flop, het haalde de hitlijsten niet) van de Lightning Seeds uit 1990. Het is de eerste single van Susanna’s tweede album, dat helaas geen groot succes zal worden. Hierna komt er nog één single van dit album en vervolgens duurt het 16 jaar voordat er een derde album komt.

20 | the prodigy - breathe
Het gaat goed met The Prodigy: Breathe wordt na Firestarter weer een nummer 1 hit in de UK. Het nummer is gebaseerd op samples van Thin Lizzy (Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed) en de Wu-Tang Clan (Da Mystery of Chessboxin'). In Servië heeft dit nummer speciale betekenis gekregen nadat The Prodigy het (voor het eerst, 11 maanden voordat het uitgebracht werd) speelde tijdens een concert in december 1995, net nadat Joegoslavië uit elkaar gevallen was. Speciale betekenis heeft het nummer ook voor Michael van Gerwen, die het nummer tot 2012 gebruikte als zijn walk-on theme.

Ik moet even bedanken voor de nieuwe singles van Johan en Savage Garden in andere lijsten, die ik zelf allebei niet op mijn netvlies had zitten. En verder helemaal geweldig zijn, niets van te zeggen.

Het is nog net geen Tom Petty, die wel heel erg zijn goede beentje heeft voorgezet met deze track. En dan is Bush ook al niet slecht.
Wederom vier sterke entrees.

En dan is 1996 nog niet voorbij, als ik zie wat zich nog aandient!

Toch maar overstag gegaan en Eels nu in m'n lijst. Bij ranboy al een poosjein de lijst en ook in de outlaw41... betekent waarschijnlijk wel dat die al weg zal zijn tegen de tijd dat die de tipparade gaat halen. Het nummer is een van de weinige van Eels die ik goed vind, veel gehoord destijds en bij het dfraaien altijd weer in de stress vanwege het stiltemoment. Hoort het echt zo lang te duren?
Het openingsnummer van het album van Alanis is blijkbaar ook een single, destijds volgens mij niet meegekregen. Het nummer is natuurlijk wel bekend genoeg zoals het hele album wat ik echt zo vaak gehoord heb in die tijd, bij mezelf of bij vrienden thuis. Blijft ook een gaaf nummer.
Catatonia met Bleed is een van de meest recht-tot-recht-aan rocxknummers die ik van ze ken. De zang van Cerys is wel meteen erg herkenbaar.
Skunk Anansie rockte in deze tijd ook nog echt en dat levert dan ook nog wel een goed nummer op, nog ver verwijderd van de over-emo van hun groostte hits.
Ook nog een nieuwe van Belinda Carlisle, die heb ik destijds ook niet gehoord. Ze zat toen in een rustigere periode, niet haar beste tijd maar het blijft toch altijd iets hebben.

Suede alweer 4 weken op 1.

Op 22 komt Mark Owen binnen, ja, die van Take That! Child is zijn enige hit in de NL top 40, maar niet in mijn top 40 (er komt er nog een). Het is een erg zoet liedje over een kind, waarschijnlijk het kind in hem, en ik was het eerlijk gezegd al helemaal vergeten, terwijl het toch wel een flinke hit in mijn lijst gaat worden.

Op 27 treffen we onze Tunesische vriend Khaled, die een paar jaar terug al een nummer 2-hit scoorde met Didi. Aicha is een fraai loflied op een Arabische schone, vooral mooi door die gevoelige stem van Khaled. De versie die ik aanklikte (ik denk de bekendste versie) begon met couplet en refrein in het Frans, daarna in het Arabisch. Ik weet niet hoeveel Arabischtalige liedjes er in mijn top gestaan hebben, maar meer dan een handvol zullen het er niet geweest zijn.

Op 36 vinden we The Prodigy met opnieuw een hard, stekelig, dreigend klinkende song, Breathe. Deze is nog sterk genoeg voor een notering, maar het is ook de laatste Prodigy-hit bij mij.

Op 37 vinden we de Red Hot Chili Peppers met een nogal atypische Love rollercoaster, met vervormde stem, een onherkenbaar koortje in het refrein en een vrolijke beat, passend bij het onderwerp. Een hit wordt het (opnieuw) niet.

Op 38 dan eindelijk die meest succesvolle Nederlandse zanger aller tijden, Marco Borsato. Ik dacht dat dit een nummer 1-hit geweest was voor hem, maar het Hitdossier zegt: nummer 2. Bij mij wordt het (zoals gezegd) zijn grootste hit (van 7 hits maar liefst), en dat komt doordat de tekst nu toch wel erg overtuigend is (achteraf nog meer dan toen...), maar vooral door die in viool uitgevoerde melodielijn, die gewoon niet stuk te krijgen is. Hij komt nu nog bescheiden binnen omdat Marco toch wel wat moet overwinnen voor ik het vertrouw, maar hij gaat het nog best ver schoppen...

Type O Negative zou waarschijnlijk niet zijn binnengekomen zonder klasgenootje Pieter, van wie ik destijds October Rust leende. Het hele album vond ik niet overdreven bijzonder, maar dit blijft wel een mooie track. Met een mooie 80s synth op een gegeven moment.

Kula Shaker, Swell, Lamb en 16 Horsepower zijn verder alleen erg OOR-/altoverantwoord, maar wel toffe nummers.

Flamman & Abraxas scoorden als Fierce Ruling Diva al een paar hitjes in mijn lijst rond '89/'90, nu mogen ze het ook solo proberen. Bekendste wapenfeiten zijn waarschijnlijk hun hits met de Party Animals en cultsongfestivalsong E-mail to Berlin (samen geschreven met Jan Rot, als ik het wel heb), maar dat haalt allemaal mijn lijst niet. Good to Go blijft wel een klapper voor op nostalgiefeestjes.

Een geweldige banger nieuw op #1; kon ook niet uitblijven dat de producers van Party Animals, de succesvolste artiesten in mijn jaarlijst (#2, #6 en #7) zelf ook op 1 zouden komen. De videoclip bevat beelden uit Alles Naar De Klote, wat me een vreselijke film leek en lijkt, maar het nummer zelf is heerlijk en net wat vetter aangezet dan de hits van genoemde Party Animals.
Nog meer (Nederlandse) happy hardcore én - ook Nederlands, maar dan geen hardcore en ook niet zo happy - is de binnenkomst van Marco Borsato.
