- Type O Negative is niet een band waar ik veel naar luister, maar in mijn middelbare schooltijd was ik wel even liefhebber van het album October Rust. Dit nummer heeft een beetje dezelfde sfeer waarin romantische met harde stukken worden afgewisseld. Dit nummer weet zo de volle 11 minuten te boeien, dus een logische nieuwe binnenkomer.
- Freakpower (een alias van Norman Cook) scoorde in Nederland pas in 1995 een hit met dit nummer (ik dacht door een reclame), maar in Engeland hadden ze het gelijk begrepen. Fijn loom nummer dat gebouwd is op een sample van een obscure 70s plaat.
- Basic Channel: zware techno van de legendarische Berlijnse producers
- The Posies: heerlijke power pop van The Posies. Laatst weer eens hun album Frosting On The Beater beluisterd en die staat vol met dit soort pareltjes.
- Spell: hier had ik tot voor kort nog nooit van gehoord, maar Big Red Balloon is toch wel een alleraardigst liedje van dit Britse duo. Hij met zware praatstem, zij met engelachtige zangstem. Ergens in het hoekje van Shakespeare's Sister en andere alternatieve popmuziek.
- ATCQ: lang geleden dat ik Midnight Marauders geluisterd heb, maar dit vond ik altijd wel een van de leukste nummers daarvan. Had hem zelf nog niet op het netvlies, dus fijn dat pureshores hem hier onder de aandacht brengt.

Week1 voor 1996 met een beetje opruiming in 1995 singles en Pulp op 1, waar ken ik dat van
Ik denk dat in 1996 The Gathering misschien wel op 1 had gestaan, maar met de kennis van nu, tja lastig. De eer van toen geven of alleen kijken naar de waardering van nu?
Verder heb ik al 6 binnenkomers gevonden, deels door andere lijstjes - Moloko had ik later gepland maar als ranboy die nu al heeft, waarom niet, en Critical Mass staat al in de gezamenlijke maar moet nog in de top 40 binnenkomen - en verder vooral uit de UK top 75 die destijds tijdelijk een top 200 was.
Hoogste nieuwe is van Dubstar, een van de ontdekkingen van vorig jaar. Ik denk dat ik dit hun beste single vind, iets minder triphop dan de vorige en meer richting Saint Etienne/Moloko/Sunscreem e.d.
Frosted is de band van ex-Gogo Jane Wiedlin, maakte 1 album. Bij het vinden van deze single ging ik op zoek naar een datum en kwam eigenlijk alleen maar november 95 tegen, hoogste tijd dus. Het nummer is wat harder dan de meeste Gogo's liedjes, komt meer in de buurt bij bv Belly of Breeders.
Levellers met alweer een nieuwe, Just the One klinkt nog folkier dan de vorige en kwam me toch wel bekend voor.
Live met de 4e single van hun 2e album, destijds haakte ik hier een beetje af maar ach, kan toch best nog als is het geen I Alone of All Over You.
Moloko dan zoals al genoemd, typisch nummer in hun stijl, prima.Destijds ook mijn kennismaking met de band volgens mij.
En Critical Mass dus ook nog, happy hardcore zoals er zoveel was destijds.

week 2 voor 1990 met 4 binnenkomers, 2 hoog en 2 laag, niks er tussen.
Het is wel leuk als bands zelf hun oude singles aankondigen. Zo postte Lush vrijdag de '25th anniversery of Single Girl'. Bij mij knalt die dan meteen maar naar 4. De single laat de dreampop en shoegaze van hun verleden achter zich en gaat meer richting britpop. Ondanks dat ik Gala en Spooky gemiddeld beter vind van Lush dan aankomend Lovelife is Single Girl toch al sinds uitkomen m'n favoriet van de band.
Bikini Kill dan met hun subtiele single I Like Fucking. Kathleen Hanna is goed op dreef in de single die maar weer eens behandelt hoe verschillend er tegen vrouwen aan wordt gekeken ten opzichte van mannen. Dat geldt natuurlijk nog steeds, zeker in de muziekwereld, maar wie ook de docu The Punk Singer over Kathleen kent weet ook dat het in de 90s echt enorm gevaarlijk was om als vrouw alleen buiten te lopen in de US. "Just cause my world, sweet sister - Is so fucking goddamn full of rape - Does that mean my body - Must always be a source of pain?" (No No No). Het is niet dat ze niet van 'fucking' houdt maar wil wel graag zelf bepalen wanneer en met wie.
Onderin dan nog Tori Amos die zich nodig moet laten testen, haar pianoliedje duurt wat lang maar heeft toch wel wat. IK heb op zich niks tegen pianoliedjes maar favoriet wordt het zelden en Tori legt het bij dan toch wel af tegen andere piano-singer-songwriters zoals Fiona Apple of Jewel.
Gene dan ook nog met een britpopnummer waarin de coupletten een beetje je Morrissey-jodel dreigen te krijgen maar de refreinen toch echt wel lekker klinken.

week 3 voor 1996 met 4 binnenkomers en - niet onverwacht denk ik - Lush die naar 1 stijgt.
Goldbug als hoogste binnekomer; ik heb deze week lopen zoeken wanneer dit in Nederland de tipparade binnenkwam en kan eigenlijk nog steeds niet geloven dat dat helemaal niet het geval was. Ik dacht dat het toch wel bekender was, in elk geval heb ik het destijds wel regelmatig gehoord. Een bijzondere cover, maar als niet-zeppelin fan heb ik daar totaal geen problemen mee. Erg 90s wel met een mix van stijlen.
Roxette haalde wel de tipparade maar die heb ik dan weer totaal niet meegekregen destijds. Volgens mij pas een beetje ontdekt bij de Greatest Hits van Roxette eind 2019 waar het de hoogste van de relatief onbekende nummers in mijn finalelijst werd (op 7).
Dub War, niet te verwarren met Dubstar, leverde een 'oh deze' momentje op bij beluistering, al weet ik niet eens zeker waarvan die herkenning dan moet komen. Heb ik het echt destijds gehoord? Mogelijk, het past prima bij wat ik wekelijks bij het uitgaan hoorde. Typsch 90s gitaarrock met veel afwisseling.
De britpop van de week komt van Cast, een band die ik destijds nauwelijks kende maar toch wel ok singles heeft.

week 4 van 1996 waarin de hele top 6 blijft staan en ik eigenlijk wat aanvulling mis in de subtop. Nummers die de top 10 uitzakken worden maar moeilijk ingehaald door nummers die vanuit 30-20 komen. Dan moet het van de binnenkomers komen maar daar gaat het ook niet zo snel mee.
Wel 6 in totaal deze week maar niet direct allemaal hoogvliegers.
Elastica bracht nog een single uit van hun album van 1994, na Stutter eind 93 en nu deze echt een enorme periode tussen eerste en laatste single van 1 album. Een hit werd het ook in de UK niet ondanks een behoorlijk uitgebreide cd-single met 3 livetracks.
Helium met zangeres Mary Timony begin deed vorig jaar al niks bij anderen met Pat's Trick, deze wat langzamere en met minder noise erupties zal vast weinig anders doen. Toch gewoon een heerlijk 90s nummer met dwarse gitaar en de kenmerkende stem van Mary (deze eeuw van Wild Flag en Ex Hex)
Chemical Brothers met Loops of Fury, kende ik zo niet maar heeft wel de lekkere sound van het eerste album. Veel beter dan de vorige single (life is sweet).
Shed Seven, britpop, volgens ingewijden destijds niet altijd even serieus genomen. Geen idee waarom, het doet me wat denken aan Supergrass.
Sunscreem met de 3e single van hun 2e album, niet heel veel anders dan de vorige, midtempo alt. dance als dat iets is.
Wink is dan weinig alt, gewoon commerciele dance maar ook zeker lekker.

week 5 voor 1996 waarin ik makkelijk de hele top 6 nog eenkeer had kunnen laten staan maar toch maar wat verschuivingen gedaan. Chemical Brothers knallen de top 5 in, wat een ontdekking vorige week, deze week ook best vaak gedraaid. Zeven binnenkomers waarbij, zomaar, 2 duitse bands.
Fools Garden, uit Duitsland, met een vrolijk niks aan de hand liedje, werd ook een hit, veel gedraaid en gehoord bij uitgaan en blijft toch wel leuk om terug te horen.
Babylon Zoo was is destijds aardig wild van, op een bepaald moment ook genoeg van maar nu heeft het toch ok wel weer wat. Dat opvallende begin, dan een zwaar gitaar liedje en nog even afsluiten met een soort electrostukje waarvan ik altijd dacht dat dat best wat langer had mogen duren. Ook dit een dansvloerknaller.
The Bates, uit Duitsland, met een cover van het bekende Michael Jackson nummer (sdommige tekststukjes versta ik hier beter dan in het origineel). In de UK blijkbaar nog even gechart, in Nederland niet, toch ken ik het best goed van toen. Werd bij ons ook veel gedraaid, heerlijk nummer, klinkt ook heel erg 90s (en dat is positief) Na dit nummer niks meer van ze gehoord trouwens.
Van Northern Uproar zag ik vorige week de '25th anniversery' van deze single. Een weekend extra gewacht om binnen te leten komen, wat een heerlijke britpop single die ik totaal niet kende. Blijkaar geproduceerd door meneer Bratfield van de MSP en dat hoor je er wel een beetje in.
Rocket from the Crypt, bekende naam wel maar muziek? Nu heeft de band uit San Diego een single met de voor mij erg aansprekende titel Born in 69 en het nummer blijkt een opgefokt gitaarrocknummer - maar wel met trompetten - dat zeker in mijn lijst mag.
16 Horsepower is een relirockband uit Denver die ik pas een paar jaar na 1996 ontdekte, zoals al eerder aangegeven werd dit nummer wel in een kroeg gedraaid waar ik na m'n verhuizing naar Rotterdam kwam. Meer leuks daar ontdekt trouwens. In elk geval is dit een countryliedje waarbij de je paarden in gedachten over de steppe ziet draven.
Catatonia uit Wales leerde ik zoals velen pas kennen met de single Mulder and Scully, maar daarvoor waren ze al even bezig. Op de single Sweet Catatonia klinken ze eigenlijk al zoals ze later bekender werden.

week 6 voor 1996 waar Lush nog onbedreigd op 1 staat al sprinten The Bates en Babylon Zoo lekker omhoog. Zes binnenkomers.
Hoogste nieuwe voor Joan Osborne, eendagsvlieg met een nummer dat tekstueel wel blijft intrigeren maar muzikaal ook gewoon erg goed is. Met andere tekst zou ze alleen misschien minder opgepikt zijn door de media.
Melissa Etheridge scoorde in m'n lijsten van 1989-1993 al goed met meerdere nummers 1 en is in de periode daarna wel een herontdekking gebleken. Vorig jaar al 2 top 10 noteringen en ook nu weer een prima single.
The Presidents met Kitty, destijds werd deze naast Lump en Peaches ook wel gedraaid; iedereen wachten op het hardere stuk natuurlijk voor je los kon gaan.
Pumpkins vond ik destijds wel goed op basis van de eerste 2 albums maar dat Mellon Collie album werd wel wat veel. Paar goede nummers, paar draken en veel er tussen in. Deze valt eigenlijk in de laatste categorie, op zich prima maar als je het vergelijkt met ouder werk als I Am One of Cherub Rock is het toch wel een beetje vlak.
Evils Superstars, uit Belgie, ken ik via een vriend van me. Ik vind lang niet alles goed maar dit heeft wel een lekkere waanzin met veel tempo- en stijlwisselingen. Helaas niet op spotify dus moet het van youtube en de cd-single hebben om te horen.
Pater Moeskroen, de meeste komen niet verder dan Roodkapje en misschien nog Hela Hola maar de band heeft een flinke discografie opgebouwd. In 1996 kwam er al een overzicht van de eerste 10 jaar waarvan dit als single werd uitgebracht. Meteen herkenbaar door het instrumentarium, zangstem en rijm (laat maar waaie(n) - mijn hart in lichterlaaie(n))

week 7 voor 1996 waar Lush op 1 blijft en 6 binnenkomers.
Melanie Garside is de zus van Katie Jane Garside, zangeres van Daisy Chainsaw en Queen Adreena. Toen ik een album van haar zag staan was ik geïntrigeerd, op een bepaald moment meegenomen en niet bepaald overtuigd. Maar dat bleek onterecht, echt groeiplaatje. Overigens maakt Melanie ook muziek als Maple Bee en zat in Vertigo Angels en collectief Medieval Babes. Het enige album wat ze onder eigen naam maakte en waar dit nummer ook van komt is een prima singer-songwriteralbum met beetje folky inslag.
Cardigans dan met een snummer dat zowel op het Emmerdals als Life album stond, zoals veel nummers. Na het succes van Carnival in de UK werd dit ook op single uitgebracht, een leker vlot en erg licht nummer.
Fluffy scoorde vorig jaar al een hit bij mij en komt nu met de opvolger. Husband is een stevig nummer dat een beetje aan L7 doet denken maar met engels accent.
Ik weet eigenlijk of ik destijds nog nummers tussen Not an Addict en Believe heb meegekregen van K's Choice. Mr Freeze past in elk geval wel prima tussen die twee met een beetje dezelfde opbouw en drive.
Net als Cardigans komt ook Louise Hoffsten uit Zweden. Ik weet niet meer hoe ik hier tegenaan liep maar de cd-single heb ik al tijden in bezit. Het nummer klinkt door de mondharmonica wat bluesier dan ik meestal leuk vind, maar ergens heeft het ook wel wat van Bitch van Meredith Brooks van over een paar jaar.
En dan Robert Miles nog, die mag er bij mij ook best in.

Week 8 voor 1996 waar Lush ongemerkt al 6 weken op 1 staat, weinig concurrentie ook eigenlijk. Maar dat kan wel eens gaan veranderen binnenkort. Zes binnenkomers waarvan 1 flink hoog.
Scheer is een band uit Noord-Ierland, hun debuut is misschien wel het hardste albums op 4AD en staat ook vaak in mijn top 100 allertijden. Heerlijke noiserock. Ik denk dat ik het destijds vua Alternative Nation heb leren kennen. Hun 2e album kwam pas in 2000 maar die heb ik nog veel later leren kennen (heb lange tijd geen idee gehad dat er een opvolger bestond) en vind ik ook minder interessant (al moet ik die weer eens opzetten).
Alanis met alweer een single van Jagged Little Pill, gek genoeg werd dit weer eens geen hit in Nederland, ook niet eens tipparade. Dat ligt toch niet aan het nummer lijkt me, blijft gewoon goed. Zal toch wel met het op de radio draaien te maken hebben, 3x top 40 en 0 tipparade van de 6 singles is wel opvallend.
Kadoc met The Nighttrain, destijds vond ik het al goed en ik denk toch wel dat dit nog steeds een van m'n favoriete dance-nummers is.
The Wannadies met een nummer dat al best oud is maar nu in de UK in de singleslijst binnenkomt. Een nummer dat wat rustiger blijft maar in het midden nog wel even een uitbarsting kent.
Sepultura scoorde zomaar een top 40 hit in Nederland, tja, die werd bij het uitgaan natuurlijk veelvuldig gedraaid. Niet perse een echte favoriet maar blijft toch wel wat hebben.
Honeycrack dan nog, vorig jaar ontdekt, toen hebben ze al een hitje gehad bij mij. Deze doet daar niet onder, prima powerpop, wat cleaner dan bv. Teenage Fanclub.

week 9 voor 1996 met 4AD op 1 én 2, volgende week in omgekeerde volgorde? 5 binnenkomers waarvan 4 uit de UK.
Echobelly komt met de 3e single van hun 2e album, dit keer een stukje rustiger. Ik heb het nummer deze week al een paar keer gedraaid en heb m'n vooraf wat sceptische mening toch flink bijgesteld, wat een heerlijk nummer toch ook gewoon.
Oasis met alsweer de 4e single van hun 2e album doet het ook rustig aan. Volgens mij begon ik destijds hier wat af te haken bij Oasis. Toch valt dit nog best mee na zoveel jaar al zal het nooit een favoriet worden.
Stereolab heeft onlangs hun Greatest Hits gehad, ondanks een flink uitgeklede finale qua favorieten slaagde deze single er niet in mijn top 10 te halen. Dat belooft weinig goeds, top 3 notering zoasl Jennu Ondioline en French Disko lijken onhaalbaar. Maar het mag wel in de lijst.
China Drum heb ik leren kennen via een cover van Wuthering Heights; dat blijkt de b-kant van deze single te zijn. Als ik dit nummer in een platlist hoor denk ik soms dat ik Green Day of NoFX hoor maar nee, China Drum dus. Lekker punkrock nummer.
Dune dan ook nog met weer een fijn happy hardcore plaatje.

week 10 voor 1996 met zoals al voorspeld de twee 4AD singles omgedraaid op 1 en 2, verder flinke stijgers in de top 10 van Alanis en Echobelly en vijf binnenkomers.
Björk met Hyper-ballad, toch wel mijn op 1 na favoriete track van Post denk ik. Ondanks dat het even duurt voor die echt op gang komt, de hele opbouw is wel erg goed.
Lush met de opvolger van Single Girl, ik kan alvast beloven dat deze geen 7 weken op 1 gaat halen. Lovelife is niet mijn favoriet van Lush, ondanks Single Girl maar dit soort nummers is toch anders dan wat ik van ze gewend was. Overigens kwam ik er deze week achter dat het ge:inspireerd is op de (sexistische) evaringen met collega muzikanten Anthony Kiedis en één van de heren van Weezer.
Anne Danielewski, artiestennaam Poe haalde vorig jaar mijn top 10 maar kreeg geen navolging van anderen. Ik had opvolger Angry Johnny voor veel later dit jaar gepland maar zie die nu in meerdere lijstjes opduiken. Een stuk rustiger, waar de vorige meer Liz Phair was is dit meer beetje Dido-achtig zelfs deze single over ene Johnny waar Anne het niet zo op heeft. In het water, in de kerk, als een beest, onverwacht, hoe dan ook, hij moet dood.
Audioweb kende ik qua bandnaam wel, ik zag ze binnenkomen in de UK charts en maar eens gaan luisteren. Ik hoorde wel wat bijzonders maar wist nog niet goed wat ik er mee moest. Toen het hele album aangeklikt en tja, het is wel een ervaring, vliegt redelijk wat kanten op. Deze single klinkt als soort van missing link tussen Stone Roses en Kula Shaker. Het beste nummer van het album komt trouwens pas volgende jaar dus ik kan nog even wennen.
Supergrass klinkt meer dan de Beatles dan ooit maar toch doet het me veel minder dan veel andere britpopbands en ook andere singles van hun.

De 2e wave van Drum 'n bass-nu volwassen uit het jungle jasje-gooit elke week worpen tips uit, deze remix voor Cath Coffey -1 van de achtergrondzangeressen bij de Stereo MC's-is de zoveelste topper en haalt Coffey door de gehaktmolen.
Ook INXS op promo krijgt een licht dnb jasje van Alex Reece maar het werkt perfect en laat de song intact.

week 40 voor 1997 waarin het spannend is aan de top, maar na beluisteren van de top 5 Echobelly toch nog een week stand houdt. Deze week 4 binnenkomers; ik had nog een paar opgeschreven maar daar is nog geen ruimte voor cq zijn niet zodanig goed dat ze zich er tussen kunnen wringen.
Sleeper komt met de 1e single van hun 3e album, een album dat destijds helemaal langs me heen is gegaan. De singles waren in de UK ook minder succesvol dan die van het 2e; het album zelf kwam nog wel gewoon in de top 10 binnen. She's a Good Girl is ook gewoon wel een goede single.
Frosted is de band van Jane Wiedlin die één album uitbracht, dit is daarvan de 2e single. Het klinkt hier meer Belly/Letters to Cleo dan Gogo's, niks mis mee.
Het is niet zo gek dat het s/t album van Blur wel gezien wordt als einde van de 1e britpop golf, Song 2 klinkt al redelijk amerikaans en ook de single M.O.R. heeft weinig van de kenmerkende britpop stijl. Wat niet wil zeggen dat het minder is, zeker niet. Lekker rauw nummer.
De hit van Skik, van hun 2e album, zoals ranboy al aangaf met behoorlijk wat plaatsnamen in de omgeving van Erica/Emmen. Op het 1e album werd (een deel van) dezelfde route nog bezongen op het nummer 'Betonpoalties (die ben zo kut)', gek dat dat geen hit werd (nou ja het was ook geen single, op zich...) Bij dit nummer voel je in elk geval de vrijheid van het fietsen op het platteland.

Mary J Blige levert een hoop kwaliteitssingles voor de liefhebber van haar Share my world album, dit was een dubbele A kant meen ik met een voorgaande single.
Nog meer gestoord gedoe met Come to daddy, de video is veelzeggender dan de ADHD breakbeat chaos die Aphex Twin voorzet.
Het is echt ontzettend druk momenteel, maar ik beperk me tot 5 new entries want de rest krijgt zo anders geen kans om te groeien.
