De tweede single van Homogenic. De video wint in 1998 bij de MTV Video Music Awards nog een prijs in de categorie best art direction in a video.

18 | the sundays – cry
De allerlaatste single van The Sundays. Een nummer over liefdesverdriet, maar de zangeres en de gitarist zijn ook in 2022 nog steeds getrouwd.

19 | sleeper - romeo me
De laatste single van Sleeper, tenminste totdat ze in 2018 weer verdergaan. De tour van Sleeper loopt niet goed en over drie maanden stoppen ze er mee. Zangeres Wener ging schrijven, zoals ik de vorige keer dat Sleeper in de top 20 kwam ook al heb gemeld, maar ik doe het graag weer, want haar boek over Sleeper, Just for One Day: Adventures in Britpop, is erg de moeite waard.

De laatste zondag van het jaar; mijn jaaroverzicht van de singles van 1997 die dit jaar in mijn lijst hebben gestaan.1997 was zoals ik al eerder aangaf voor mij een overgangsjaar van student naar werkend, mede daardoor heb ik destijds minder meegekregen van de muziek van het moment dan eerdere jaren. Dat heb ik in 2022 dan deels nog ingehaald door wat ontdekkingen (waarbij zeker een aantal die ik in 1997 ook nooit had kunnen ontdekken zonder dingen als youtube en spotify).Natuurlijk staat er ook wel veel tussen wat ik ergens tussen 1998 en 2021 al ontdekt had op diverse manieren.
Op nummer nummer 1 één van mijn absoluut favoriete artiesten, Tanya Donelly. In 1993, mijn laatste 'live' lijstjesjaar, haalde ze ook deze eerste plaats, toen nog met haar band Belly (feed the tree, en in 1995 (2020) trouwens ook al met super-connected).
Nu onder eigen naam op 1 gevolgd door voor mezelf wel een verrassing dat die zó goed scoorde, Wannadies en de eerste echte ontdekking, dwz waar ik nooit van gehoord had voor 2022, op 8, Abra Moore.

Op zijn zestiende werd Roni Size van school gestuurd en begon hij naar feestjes van The Wild Buch, later bekend als Massive Attack, te gaan. Die ervaring, gecombineerd met wat hij over produceren leerde bij zijn lokale jeugdclub en de platen van zijn broer die hij kon samplen, begon hij zelf muziek te maken. Dat leidde in 1997 tot New Forms, een album dat erg succesvol werd. Op dat album en ook op dit nummer gebruikte hij samples, maar samples die hij en anderen zelf ingespeeld hadden. Dat zorgde voor een ander drum ’n bass geluid dan gebruikelijk in die tijd, wat misschien wel bijdroeg aan het succes.

19 | all saints - never ever
De single van het jaar bij de Brit Awards, waarbij ze Bitter Sweet Symphony van The Verve, Song 2 van Blur, Paranoid Android van Radiohead en Candle in the Wind 1997 van Elton John versloegen. Het nummer is gebaseerd op de relatie van zangeres Shaznay Lewis die uit ging en is ook geschreven door haar, zoals zij de meeste nummers van de All Saints (mede) schreef.

20 | propellerheads / shirley bassey - history repeating
Speciaal geschreven door de Propellerheads met Shirley Bassey in gedachten en uiteindelijk ook door haar gezongen. Ik moest het even controleren, maar Shirley Bassey treedt met haar 85 jaar nog steeds af en toe op. Twee maanden geleden zong ze nog Diamonds are Forever en Goldfinger op The Sound of 007: Live from the Royal Albert Hall.

Dat 1998 ook maar weer fantastisch wordt !!!!

Ook in 1998 veel recycle werk, 1 van de veelgevraagde remixers dit jaar wordt Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim die de revamp van Wildchild de charts in jaagt.
Door de aandacht voor Some kind of bliss (die mij bar weinig deed en ik ook niet heb laten meedraaien) was ik vergeten dat rond dezelfde tijd Kylie's samenwerking met Towa Tei uitkwam, die is te leuk om te vergeten dus dan nu met vertraging alsnog.
Speedgarage is de marketing term nog steeds voor alle hippe clubhouse die uit de UK garage scene komt en die van Industry Standard mag er zijn.
En ook bij mij Bernard Butler.

Of de Rolling Stones nog relevant waren tijdens de Bridges to Babylon periode, geen idee. Maar ze maakten voor deze periode wel interessante en licht creepy promo videos. (en een geweldige Deep Dish remix die ze wellicht wel wat relevant maakte).
Van de mooie Maria Montell kan ik de Jaydee remix niet vinden, maar het origineel is wel leuk voor het poppy meezinggehalte, zou zomaar voor ranja nog iets kunnen zijn.

TIP 7 | bush - warm machine
Warm Machine is de tweede Britse single van Bush’s derde album The Science of Things, geproduceerd door Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley en Gavin Rossdale en geschreven door Rossdale zelf. De videoclip, geregisseerd door Russell Thomas en Steve Jones, combineert opnames van een live optreden in Miami met studiobeelden uit Londen. Commercieel bereikte het nummer onder meer de 38e positie in de Amerikaanse Alternative Songs Chart en de 16e plek in de Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart.

TIP 10 | madison avenue - who the hell are you
Het nummer bevat elementen uit Vernon Burchs “Get Up” en debuteerde op nummer 1 van de ARIA Singles Chart, waar het twee weken bleef staan. Internationaal behaalde het de tiende plek in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en stond het een week bovenaan de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play-lijst. De videoclip, geregisseerd door Mark Hartley, won een ARIA Award voor Beste Video.

TIP 15 | coldplay – yellow
De melodie ontstond toen Chris Martin, in een Neil Young-imitatie, de gitaarriff improviseerde na een nachtelijke sterrenkijkpauze in Rockfield Studio in Wales, op aanraden van co-producer Ken Nelson. De minimalistische videoclip, geregisseerd door James Frost & Alex Smith, toont Martin in slow motion terwijl hij langs Studland Bay wandelt in één onafgebroken opname, nadat de rest van de band wegbleef vanwege persoonlijke omstandigheden. Het nummer leverde Coldplay hun eerste top-vijfnotering in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op en bereikte daarnaast de eerste plaats in IJsland en de top tien in onder meer Australië en Ierland.

TIP 18 | wilt - open arms
Het nummer, geschreven door Cormac Battle, Darragh Butler en Mick Murphy, is te vinden op hun album Bastinado en bereikte in Ierland de 21e positie en in het Verenigd Koninkrijk de 150e plaats in de hitlijsten. De XFM Acoustic Session-versie, uitgebracht als bonus op de single, laat de rauwe, akoestische kracht van de band horen, en een latere cover door Nick Parker bracht het nummer nieuw leven.

TIP 20 | blink-182 - what's my age again?
De kenmerkende gitaarriff ontstond toen Mark Hoppus per ongeluk een nieuw akkoordenschema verzon terwijl hij probeerde de intro van Green Day’s “J.A.R.” na te spelen, waarna hij de tekst in slechts vijf minuten schreef. Oorspronkelijk droeg het nummer de werktitel “Peter Pan Complex” als verwijzing naar het fenomeen van de eeuwige puber, maar de titel werd aangepast omdat de platenmaatschappij de verwijzing te obscuur vond. De iconische videoclip, geregisseerd door Marcos Siega, laat de band in huidkleurige Speedo’s naakt door de straten van Los Angeles rennen en bezorgde hen een massale doorbraak op MTV.
