Week 41 voor 1997, waarin de nummers 1 en 2 van plaats wisselen. Er is wat ruimte in de top 10 waar Chemical Brothers en Isabelle Caux gebruik van maken door flink te stijgen. 4 binnenkomers.
Als je op een platenbeurs zo'n single ziet van God's Boyfriend dan intrigeert dat meteen, dus maar gekocht en ja, lekker poprock plaatje ergens tussen Elastica en Juliana Hatfield.
Anouk vond ik destijds natuurlijk goed, overigens bleef het wel vooral bij dit nummer en dan soms nog een best aardige single.
Tampasm heb ik pas dit jaar ontdekt, wat punkiger dan God's Boyfriend, beetje Donnas invloeden.
Dit nummer van Fear Factory is wel bijzonder... van Remanufracture, feitelijk een remix album, dit nummer begint als dance maar al snel komen de harde gitaren en grom-zang er bij om er toch enigzins een FF nummer van te maken. Even wennen.

week 42 voor 1997 waarin bovenin te veel nummers nog te weinig kunnen zakken waardoor de nieuwere nummers er maar met moeite doorheen kunnen komen. De hele top 10 blijft hetzelfde, wel een paar kleine verschuivingen, maar het blijven dezelfde 10 nummers. En dan zijn er ook nog weer 5 binnenkomers.
Ik heb een heleboel franse muziek in huis, italiaans echter... op een of andere manier spreekt dat net minder aan. 1 uitzondering, Elisa, de enige italiaanse waar ik meer dan 1 album van heb. Het begon met deze single die ik meteen erg goed vond. Regelmatig gezien op de clipzenders; ik was wel vergeten dat deze de tipparade nog had gehaald. Ze maakt overigens nog steeds muziek, deels engels- en deels italiaans-talig.
Ik dacht altijd dat When the Pawn Fiona's beste album was, maar ik twijfel nu. Ik zag laatst de tracklist van Tidal en daar staan toch wel erg veel bekende en goede nummers op, waaronder deze. Indringend en meeslepend piano nummer.
Gek genoeg staat deze single van Morcheeba niet op hun 1e verzamelaar, dat terwijl het wel gewoon een UK hit is geweest en bepaald niet hun minste nummer. De 1e single van het 2e album.
Catatonia komt met de 1e single van wat hun doorbraakalbum wordt. I Am the Mob zit vol met verwijzingen maffiafilms/-series, muzikaal is het erg herkenbaar als Catatonia.
In 1997 was ik niet bezig met The Gathering. Ik had Mandylion wel maar dacht niet aan opvolgers. Pas rond 2000 ben ik ze weer gaan oppikken en live zien. Inmiddels ben ik helemaal fan van de periode met Silje als zangeres dus dan is zo'n Anneke weer even wennen. Het was pas hun 2e album met Anneke dus nog behoorlijk goth-metal; de switch naar meer symfo/psychedelisch/experimenteel moest nog komen.

week 43 voor 1997 waarin Portishead het stokje over neemt van Tanya. Verder zit er eindelijk weer wat beweging in de lijst door wat binnenkomers van vorige week die nu wel door de vastgeroeste top 15/20 heen komen. En dat lijkt minimaal 2 van de 4 binnenkomers van deze week ook wel te gaan lukken.
Ash is hoogste nieuwe met een soundtrack-nummer, blijkbaar de eerste single met Charlotte als 4e bandlid. Gave film, gaaf nummer dat tegen het einde nog even écht loskomt.
Sommige house/dance songs vind ik beter dan andere, en deze van Antiloop is wel een die er positief uitspringt. Altijd een heerlijk nummer gevonden.
Chest heb ik vorig jaar ontdekt en zelfs hun enige album gekocht. Dit is de laatste single die ze uitbrachten, lekker uptempo alt rock nummer ergens tussen Echobelly en Letters to Cleo met wat Stereolab invloeden.
Oasis begon ik hier al op te geven, met nummers als dit al was de vorige nog wel gewoon lekker. Wie weet ontdek ik de komende tijd nog dat het allemaal wel meeviel. Of niet.

week 44 voor 1997 waarin de top 3 nog een keer blijft staan maar opvolging wel aanstaande lijkt, al kunnen de nummers 1 en 2 nog best een poosje mee.4 binnenkomers waaronder een nederlandstalig nummer...
Soviet Sex, vroege 80s postpunk band, bracht in 1997 hun 2e album uit samen met Ellen ten Damme. 16 jaar na hun debuut (zonder Ellen), in de tussentijd zaten de bandleden oa in Blue Murder. Dit album kocht ik destijds nieuw, overigens is dit het enige nederlandstalige nummer op dat album dat ook een erg broerige cover van Heartbreak Hotel bevat. Het album is van eind oktober, de single zal eerder geweest zijn maar hoeveel? Ik vond nu wel een geschikt moment.
Jewel kende ik al via de clipzenders van You Were Meant to Me, Foolish Games werd vervolgens een grote hit, ook een heerlijk nummer.
Echobelly komt met de 2e en laatste single van hun 3e album, hierna was het succes eigenlijk wel op al zouden er nog 2 albums volgen en na een stilte van zo'n 15 jaar een reunie-album. Deze single is wel een a-typisch Echobelly nummer met deels gesproken zang en redelijk beperkte muzikale begeleiding.
Ik vind lang niet alles van Smash Mouth goed, maar dit nummer heb ik altijd wel een zwak voor gehad.

The Verve blijft maar op één staan met The Drugs Don’t Work (50tracks #1, ranboy #2, herman #4, johan de witt #9, vigil #12). Daarnaast vijf nieuwe binnenkomers en één re-entry, dus genoeg te beleven in de top 20 deze week. Helaas dit keer wel met halve punten in de lijst, want we hebben een lijst die voor de tweede week afwezig is.... vigil, we missen je! 50tracks ook natuurlijk, maar een weekje overslaan is nog geen reden tot zorg.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

03 | ash - a life less ordinary
Zoals al eerder door iemand benoemd: de eerste single van Ash met de nieuwe gitarist Charlotte Hatherley. Het nummer is door zanger Tim Wheeler geschreven voor de film A Life Less Ordinary. Hij had op dat moment al een tijd niets meer geschreven. Voor inspiratie greep hij terug op de White Goddess, bedacht door de schrijver Robert Graves, die de god van liefde, vernietiging en poëzie zou zijn geweest voor ze werd verdreven door de goden van kilheid en logica. Dit nummer is een liefdesverklaring aan haar.

09 | radiohead - no surprises
De laatste single van OK Computer, maar de eerste die voor het album geschreven werd.

10 | antiloop - in my mind
Dance uit Zweden, met een intro van Hold That Sucker Down van The O.T. Quartet. En inderdaad, vernoemd naar een antilope, in het Zweeds bekend als een antilop met één o.

15 | belle and sebastian - a century of fakers
Een nummer over de strijd tussen eerlijk en oprecht zijn versus egoïstisch en nep.

17 | skik - op fietse
Skik fietst in Drenthe. De route kan je zelf nafietsen, want de Drentse VVV zag hier een mooie toeristische attractie in. Het is wel een rondje van 65 kilometer, dus best nog wel pittig.

Week 45 voor 1997, Portishead nog op 1 maar Ash dringt aan, meer concurrentie is onderweg... 4 binnenkomers deze week.
Theaudience (als 1 woord inderdaad) kende ik destijds nog helemaal niet. Ook de UK media nog niet echt overigens, pas de volgende singles gingen scoren. Bij mij duurde het nog minstens 5 jaar toen zangeres Sophie solo hits ging scoren, overigens wel in een iets andere genre dan haar band.
De franse band Dolly heb ik bij hun vorige single al voortgesteld, de 2e single van hun debuutalbum ligt in het verlengde, als een soort franstalige letters to cleo. OOk weer een gave single.
Lisa Loeb komt met de eerste single van haar 2e album, zelfde recept, rustig singer/songwriter liedje.
The Charlatans worden niet meer zo goed als ten tijde van 'the only thing I know' of 'weirdo' maar deze single is toch goed genoeg voor mijn lijst.

De tweede single van New Forms, de plaat die 46 weken in de Engelse Albumlijst zou blijven staan.

19 | buena vista social club - chan chan
Geschreven in 1984 door Compay Segundo en nu opnieuw door hem, samen met de andere Cubaanse muzikanten die de Buena Vista Social Club vormen, opnieuw opgenomen. Die Chan Chan komt uit een Cubaans kinderverhaal. Of een oud volksliedje, dat is niet helemaal duidelijk.

20 | kent - om du var här
Om du var här, oftewel If You Were Here, zoals later ook in het Engels door Kent op de plaat gezet. Maar die versie zien we in 1998 vast nog voorbij komen.

week 46 voor 1997 waar Ash op 1 mag maar daar vast niet lang zal blijven. Met enige moeite nog tot 4 binnenkomers gekomen.
Een van de beste nieuwe artiesten van 1997 komt nu met haar eerste single binnen, misschien door sommigen beschouwd als eendagsvlieg maar inmiddels is ze toch een album of 6 verder en heeft ook meerdere, zij het in nederland kleine, hits gehad. Het begon met Torn en dat was meteen wel een voltreffer. Heerlijk nummer.
Olive komt nog met een single, Miracle duurt op het album ruim 7 minuten maar ik vond een radio edit, die behoorlijk aan Morcheeba doet denken.
Dannii Minogue met een single die ik redelijk vergeten was, had minder indruk gemaakt dan oa All I Wanna Do. Toch gewoon een prima popliedje.
Louise Attaque, nee geen zangeres maar meer de franse versie van Levellers. Bij mij vooral bekend van een geweldige live cover van Song 2, dit nummer, hun debuutsingle, wordt vooral door de viool wel wat bijzonders.

In één keer binnen op één! En dat voor een single die volgend jaar pas in een remix een hit wordt in Nederland. Die versie wordt overigens de eerste single van een min of meer bekende act die online gereleased wordt, maar dat is voor volgend jaar, als de remix tenminste dan ook de top 20 haalt. Voor dit jaar kan ik vertellen dat dit de tweede single is van Rialto en de eerste die een hit wordt. Het nummer gaat over een man die last heeft van jaloezie, die het hoogtepunt bereikt op maandagochtend.

07 | pulp - help the aged
De eerste single van This is Hardcore, dat in 1998 uitkomt. Misschien is dit nummer wel het begin van het einde van Pulp, want het nummer gaat over Jarvis Cocker zelf die zich te oud begint te voelen voor het leven van popster. Hij is 34....

11 | natalie imbruglia – torn
Oorspronkelijk een Deens nummer uit 1993, voor het eerst een hit in 1996 in Noorwegen in een versie van een Noorse band en nu een echt grote hit in de versie van Natalie Imbruglia. Met dezelfde producer die verantwoordelijk was voor Radioheads OK Computer. Natalie Imbruglia is in 1997 vooral bekend als actrice in de soap Neighbours, waar eerder Kylie Minogue en Jason Donovan ook in speelden. En om het helemaal 90s te houden: binnenkort heeft ze een paar jaar een relatie met Ross van Friends.

week 47 voor 1997 waarin Natalie al meteen naar 1 springt en het maar de vraag is of er dit jaar nog een andere nummer 1 gaat komen. Dat zal niet van de huidige 4 binnenkomers gaan komen.
The Prodigy met de 2e single van Fat of the Land, de clip werd gebanned van MTV maar lijkt ook gebanned van youtube, nergens te vinden. Wel een toefje minder goed dan Breathe.
Sommige mensen vinden This is Hardcore het beste Pulp-album, ik heb er altijd wat moeite meegehad. Pas jaren later toch eens uit een koopjesbak aangeschaft en viel toch wel mee al vind ik het lang niet zo goed als His n Hers en Different Class. Help the Aged heeft ook z'n goede momenten.
Catherine Wheel met een single van verrassend genoeg het enige album dat ik van ze heb. Niet bepaald het hoogst aangeschreven album van ze en ook wat minder echte shoegaze. Overigens ken ik ze ook vooral van de single samen met Tanya Donelly van een paar jaar eerder.
Radish staat met hun vorige single nog genoteerd, voor die single binnenkwam had ik nog nooit vand e band gehoord. Deze nieuwe is niet helemaal even goed maar doet toch wel denken aan bv Replacements waar ik bij de vorige nog Buffalo Tom noemde. Overigens een britse band.

week 48 voor 1997 waarin een aantal erg goede nummers binnenkomen die zo voor de nodige opruiming zorgen. Dat gaat dringen worden aan de top de komende weken.
Portishead met de 2e single van hun 2e album, Over is een zeer indringend nummer dat veel meer succes had verdient destijds. Wel een typisch voorbeeld waarom hun 2e album mijn favoriet van ze is.
Tanya Donelly komt met de 2e single van haar debuut soloalbum, The Bright Light klinkt eigenlijk net als de voorganger alsof het zo op een Belly album had gepast. En daar is niks mee.
Van Curve kende ik de eerste 2 albums natuurlijk, heel lang heb ik niks geweten van een 3e. Volgens mij jaren later toen dit nummer in een reclame werd gebruikt kwam ik achter het bestaan er van. Deze single combineert het electronische shoegaze geluid met wat Prodigy achtige invloeden waardoor het nog harde wordt dan hun eerste 2 albums. Heerlijke bak herrie.
The Sundays blijven verrassen, ik kende eigenlijk niks na hun 1e album maar de vorige single beviel al erg goed en dat geldt ook voor de opvolger. Toch eens dat 2e album opzoeken.
Les Savy Fav is een amerikaanse shockrock-band die ik een keer zag op Metropolis (vele jaren later). Dit is hun eerste single en knalt er meteen hard in.

Als ranboy er zo een Nilsson in knalt ga ik niet achterblijven... extra binnenkomer dus voor week 49 voor 1197. Wat een nummers aan het eind van het jaar nog even... veel die weken geleden makkelijk top 3 hadden gehaald moeten nu elkaar beconcurreren.
Sleeper met de 2e single van hun 3e album, de beste ook. Romeo Me heeft alles wat je van de band mag verwachte, of het genoeg zal zijn voor de zoveelste nummer 1 echter... er is nogal wat concurrentie.
Nilsson bijvoorbeeld, altijd bekend staand als de band van Texel. D eerste single is een knaller die zich moeiteloos kan meten met oa Bettie Serveert en K's Choice. Misschien was het momentum net voorbij? Zelfs ik, terwijl ik deze single destijds al geweldig vond kwam er pas later achter hoe geweldig de 2 albums van deze band zijn.
Yo la Tengo leerde ik ooit kennen met een cover van Blondie. Hun eigen nummers zijn meestal ook prima, nu komen ze weer met een cover, van de Beach Boys waarbij ze echter qua uitvoering goed naar Jesus and Mary Chain lijken te hebben geluisterd.
The Cure volgde ik in deze tijd blijkbaar niet, deze week is volgens mij de eerste keer dat ik dit nummer hoorde. Qua stijl een beetje in het verlengde van Never Enough, destijds het eerste Cure nummer dat ik goed vond.
M People vond ik destijds weinig aan, veel later alsnog enigzins gaan waarderen. Er zit een bekende sample/geleend melodietje in volgens mij, dacht aan Tavares maar twijfel ook.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

13 | portishead – over
De tweede single van het tweede album van Portishead. De zangeres Beth Gibbons was dit jaar nog één van de genomineerden voor de Grammy Awards, als één van de artiesten die meegewerkt heeft aan Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers van Kendrick Lamar. Maar helaas voor haar werd dat niet het album van het jaar.

15 | sheryl crow - tomorrow never dies
Voor de James Bond film werden the Cardigans, Pulp, Saint Etienne en Swan Lee (wie? Dat is een Deense band) gevraagd. Of beter: zij boden zich aan, maar uiteindelijk won K.D. Lang. Totdat Sheryl Crow kwam en haar nummer de voorkeur kreeg. De versie van K.D. Lang zit overigens nog wel in de film.

18 | catherine wheel – delicious
Catherine Wheel is niet een zangeres, maar een Engelse band. De naam Catherine Wheel is de naam van een middeleeuws marteltuig, een wiel waarmee eerst de botten van een veroordeelde werden gebroken en waar iemand vervolgens in werd gekruisigd. Als iemand er uit viel dan volgde genade. Tegenwoordig is het zo’n vuurwerkrad, dus misschien komt de naam van deze band wel van deze vrolijkere versie.

week 50 voor 1997; Natalie houdt stand, er lijkt wel opvolging aan te komen wat het begin volgend jaar best spannend kan maken. Al zullen er dan ook weer nieuwe bij komen. Deze week 4 binnenkomers waarvan de onderste 2 eigenlijk 'vooruit dan maar' entries zijn.
De eerste single van Elisa kende ik destijds en vond ik al erg goed, meer van haar leerde ik pas later kennen. De 2e single ook, Labyrinth, wat meer uptempo dan Sleeping in Your Hand.
In de mid- en late 90s waren best veel mensen die ik kende liefhebber van Machinehead. Ik had daar nooit zoveel mee, net als Fear Factory overigens waar dit nummer me wat aan deed denken. Beide bands heb ik later wel meer leren waarderen.
De eerste single van All Saints had wel iets, Never Ever zou ik eigenlijk beter moeten vinden, echte girlgroup muziek (het genre, niet omdat ze toevallig met alleen dames zijn). Dat intro duurt echter zo lang dat ik eigenlijk alle interesse al verloren ben tegen de tijd dat het echt begint. Toch in mn lijst.
Run DMC mt een inderdaad lekker doorstampend nummer. Met een zangeres had het zo ook een prima eurohouse nummer kunnen zijn.
