Het nieuwe album van Angus & Julia Stone stond op repeat het afgelopen weekend, vandaar dat Chateau deze week op nummer 1 staat (maar er staan nog veel mooiere nummers op het nieuwe album; hopen dat die nog officieel single worden). Verder ook nog wel redelijk veel nieuwe muziek kunnen luisteren; dat verklaart het grote aantal nieuwe binnenkomers in de onderste regionen.

Cut Copy: dansbare jaren 80 muziek, met tropische Afrikaanse invloeden.
David Gray: singer-songwriter met de zeer herkenbare stem. Blijft fijn!
Shambolics: voor de liefhebbers van het eerdere werk van R.E.M.
Absynthe Minded: rustig popnummer van onze Zuiderburen.
WILDES: een vleugje Lana Del Ray, Daughter, Florence And The Machine hoor ik er in.

Wel wel, daar is dan eindelijk een nieuwe naam op de eerste plek, alhoewel... nieuwe naam... The National stijgt na 3 weken door met Day I Die en pakt zijn 3e nummer 1 hit van dit jaar. Knappe prestatie op 4 singles!

De Sparks gaan al mee sinds 1972 (!) en maken dit jaar een mooie comeback met nu al drie leuke singles. Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me) is deze week zelfs de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer bij ons. Muzikaal is het weer erg aanstekelijk en tekstueel bijzonder geestig. Ik ken niet veel bands die na ruim 40 jaar nog zulke goede liedjes weten te schrijven.

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile zijn twee grote indienamen uit deze tijd; zij uit Australië en hij uit de VS. Dit transcontinentale duet is precies wat je verwacht als je beide artiesten kent: lome (slacker) alternatieve gitaarpop met een vleugje country en storytelling. Naar verluidt schreef Vile al vanaf 2015 muziek met Barnett in gedachten. Hoewel ik beide artiesten graag hoor, moet het kwartje bij dit liedje nog wat vallen, maar daar heb ik alle geduld mee.

Karl Hyde en Matthew Herbert had ik eigenlijk niet meer in de lijst verwacht, maar blijkbaar wordt We All Hurt nog steeds opgepikt. Het nummer komt van de soundtrack van de film Fatherland, die beide dance-veteranen bij elkaar speelden. We All Hurt heeft een niet alledaags klankenpallet, ik zou het kunnen omschrijven als industriële pop. Tekstueel is het ook intrigerend ("she was only seventeen when she got me"), al vind ik de tekst helaas niet online.

Cigarettes After Sex scoorde begin dit jaar nog een nummer 1, maar zijn na het verschijnen van hun album toch wat uit beeld verdwenen lijkt het wel. Gelukkig verschijnt er dan toch nog een single. De verrassing is er natuurlijk vanaf: elk nummer klinkt zo ongeveer hetzelfde met veel galm, hetzelfde tempo en die lijzige stem. Desalniettemin weet Sweet mij toch wel te bekoren, een kaal maar erg mooi en ontroerend liedje.

Angus & Julia Stone is op MusicMeter een gevestigde naam, maar eigenlijk heb ik me nooit echt in hun muziek verdiept, al kwam er af en toe wel eens een liedje voorbij dat ik mooi vond. Nu luister ik alweer een paar keer naar Chateau en ik moet zeggen dat dat me wel goed bevalt. Mooie folk op een lekker stevig tempo en twee hele fijne stemmen. Soms vind ik het genre wel wat saai, zeurderig of vervelend, maar als het zo gespeeld wordt dan is dat wel volop genieten!

Dat was hem weer voor deze week. Leuk om naast de nieuwkomers in de lijst hierboven ook weer nieuwe deelnemers te zien! Tot de volgende maandag!

Leuk dat The National hier eindelijk de nummer 1-hits aan elkaar rijgt! Vreemd eigenlijk dat dit vier jaar geleden nog niet lukte met de singles van Trouble Will Find Me.

Het bed schijnt een geliefd onderwerp om over te zingen en vooral het verblijf er in, als je de titels ziet van Morrissey en Prides. Misschien geven wereldlijke beslommeringen daar voor de heren componisten ook voldoende aanleiding toe.

Ook Jake Bugg zingt bij aanvang van zijn song een keer "You spent time in your bed". En dan te bedenken dat zijn track na weken in m ijn lijst opeens de weg naar boven weet te vinden. Net zo goed als dat ook de Sparks met Edith Piaf weer omhoog gaan. Na twee weekjes nieuw album draaien, komen dit soort nummers na verloop van tijd volledig tot hun recht in het geheel.

De mooiste nieuwe herrie van deze week komt van de Paceshifters en Lullaby. Met Cut 'n run en Speed weinig aanleiding om in bed te gaan liggen.

Stormachtige 30 - week 38

Morrissey is terug met een prima single. Ik krijg spontaan zin in het nieuwe album van hem. Wat leuke nummers opgepikt uit de Spotify-lijst van Niek (NiPeAfrekening), waaronder dodie en LIA LIA. De lijst wordt afgesloten met beloftes uit eigen land: Pip Blom en The Brahms. Ook zij produceerden weer mooie singles. De komende weken gaat er ongetwijfeld aan de stoelpoten gezaagd worden van Wolf Alice. Maar wie durft het aan? The National of toch de snelle stijger NAO met haar 90’s R&B-revival hit Nostalgia?
