Vers van de pers: de recensie van Jochempie bij Radiohead- In Rainbows:
I guess there are so many reviews written on this album that this one really is completely unnecessary, but here it is anyway! This album has given me so many hours of enjoyment and pure happiness that I just wanted to loose my egg about it. The pleasant surprise of releasing the album 10 days after the announcement that they were going to release it really fell in good earth with me. This was no tissue for the bleeding here; this was not a big band taking the world between, no sir, this was the real thing. Radiohead, my favourite band that still walks around on this small planet was actually releasing a splinternew album. After 4 years of waiting it final came, but it was only a transition said the fox, and then they pulled the skin all the way over his ears. So on the 10th of October I actually went to my girlfriend’s home early in the morning because didn’t have a computer available at home. People might have said that I had to go to the Merenberg but I really love this band ok, and I really needed to hear this album. Judging on the stories I read from people I wasn’t the only person to do this since most of the music loving world was in rep and handlebars. So I downloaded the album on torrents because the site was so overloaded and began listening.
I stood with a mouth full of teeth upon hearing the album, I was genuinely touched. I know Radiohead has been a very consisted band in releasing brilliant albums but it couldn’t expect that they had so much in hatto for us, I aren’t born with a helmet on my head. I punched a hole in the sky after Videotape had been ended and those final words kept on flying trough my head, “Today has been the most perfect day I have ever seen”. Somehow that simple sentence was so goddamn intense it didn’t leave my head for an hour or so. Mostly an album does take at least some time growing on me but here I didn’t have a heavy float at all; it actually clicked on the first listen. Now I know this doesn’t have to be a good sign, but it’s not a bad one per se as well. Upon this day the album is still growing on me and I’m still discovering new stuff, it’s like an oil pitcher from the widow.
On to the music itself. The main word I’m probably going to use is “beautiful” because it captures this album so very well. The music is very Radiohead and they are certainly recognizable but their ideas still sound fresh. Yeah these isn’t a band which high jumps are done and went searching for a beafroast but ended with a neck bone, they really are seasoned in their craft and they always go their corridor sounding nothing less then beautiful. The songs that really stood out for me were “All I Need” in with its amazing climax. This song definitely shows that they walk together in the same harness, maybe even more than on all their other songs. “Reckoner” is perhaps the most beautiful song they have ever made and shows that if excess hurts make it a very minimal song and it can still be great. I like this version a lot more than the live versions I’ve heard which aren’t very good at all. Also Videotape, Jigsaw Falling into Place and Weird Fishes are stand outs but nothing reaches the height of Reckoner.
Radiohead is a very big band right now; perhaps even the biggest on earth at the moment, so inevitably there will always be a bunch of nay-sayers. That’s very understandable of course and I’m always open for a lot of criticism but some things just aren’t true in my perception. A main point of a lot of people is that this album is practically the same thread only put on a different spool. But I beg to differ. I think it’s actually like cutting the ham out of a dead cow making statements like that. Radiohead have never sounded like this, never had this particular mood put into an album and has never made something sounding so beautiful. The old wolf still hasn’t become grey and still has a lot of new tricks up his sleeve and he showed it here. Another point is that the album doesn’t flow very well. This is only a subjective point of opinions of course but I can’t really understand why it doesn’t flow according to those views. I love the flow here, but hey that’s just my view upon hearing this release. I actually think all the songs go very well together and the album never really has any weak points where for example 4 slow songs follow each other. People however all agree on the brilliant marketing move and I hope the actual physical release isn’t going to cost me a rib out of my body and doesn’t getting me thinking in ways like “there are scissors hanging” but hey it’s always better expensive then not for sale at all, right?
