In de absolute top gebeurt er deze week maar weinig, maar daaronder zijn er veel grote stijgers en dalers, én een aardig rijtje binnenkomers.

Met Ode to the Quiet en Young Fathers twee nummers die al lange tijd in mijn singleslijst stonden en naar mijn mening toch eens een notering verdienden. Ode to the Quiet zeker, van die Utrechtse (geloof ik) band geniet ik al een tijdje, maar op een of andere manier vergat ik ze telkens in mijn top 40 te zetten of was er net te veel concurrentie. Met deze hoge binnenkomst maak ik dat dus een beetje goed. Ghosts schijnt al vrij oud te zijn maar er is in juni een clip van verschenen, en daar leerde ik het door kennen. Gezien de kijkcijfers is er helaas nauwelijks aandacht voor, terwijl het zo'n prachtig liedje is... Heel mooie popmuziek.

Of Nest van Young Fathers een single is, is me niet helemaal meer duidelijk. Ik weet niet meer waar ik die vandaan plukte. Maar ach, ik heb geen zin om daar nog moeilijk over te doen, voor mij is het nu een single. Aanvankelijk vond ik hem wel aardig, maar viel ie niet zo op. Maar het is toch weer een sterk nummer van dit Schotse hiphoptrio dat me al helemaal overtuigde met hun optreden op Down the Rabbit Hole.

Venetian Snares had vorig jaar nog een grote hit in mijn lijst met My Love Is Bulldozer. Hij bracht ook een album uit, maar er is dus nu alweer nieuw werk, lekker productief bezig die man. En ook goed bezig, want Red Orange 2 klinkt weliswaar typisch Venetian Snares, maar weet zich toch wel weer te onderscheiden van zijn andere werk, en alle sampletjes en geluidjes zijn gewoon precies goed uitgekozen en geplaatst.

Haiku Salut komt een tweede keer de lijst binnen, met nog een melancholisch instrumentaaltje, deze keer eentje dat heel erg aan Amélie doet denken. Mooi hoor!

Met Heather Woods Broderick ben ik nogal laat, maar dat komt doordat het nummer niet op Spotify stond. Dan moet ik extra moeite doen om het toch in mijn Spotify-playlist te krijgen en die moeite doe ik niet altijd. Onterecht, zo blijkt! Nu A Call for Distance toch op Spotify staat, kom ik erachter wat een prachtige dream-folk het is, om het maar een mooi naampje te geven. Prachtige stem heeft ze ook, zeg,

Verder nog een toffe, gedreven hiphopsingle van Gangrene, en de Braziliaanse DJ Sugar Hill heeft een fijne dancetrack gemaakt met een sample van Summertime van DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. Erg leuk gedaan!

Nieuw:
Tja, kleine twigs-bestorming van de lijst. Het kind heeft een nieuwe EP uit, wederom voorzien van verpletterende visuals, en m'n muziekwereldje staat op z'n kop. Vooral In Time maakt veel indruk. De gesamplede stembewerkingen in het refrein lijken wel van Miley Cyrus: schraal, vadsig en in-your-face, maar o zo heerlijk. Een mooie aanvulling op de zinderende verses en de grimmige synths. Het totaalplaatje, vooral met de clip erbij, geeft ook die hele throwback R&B-anno-1999 treffend weer, uiteraard voorzien van de kenmerkende twigs-twist. Figure 8 is moeilijker te doorgronden, maar het houdt me steeds steviger in z'n greep. Ook Glass & Patron maakt een re-entry, want toch niet de volledige credits gekregen destijds. O ja, en het schijnt dat Dr. Dre ook wat nieuws uit heeft, dus hij mag meespelen.

- Uit de Kopenhaagse post-punkscene komt Communions, een jong bandje met een heerlijk onbevangen geluid. Forget It's A Dream voelt eigenlijk meteen als klassieker, wellicht door het breeduit waaierende gitaargeluid of de 'Stone Roses-esque swagger', zoals ik ergens lees. Die associatie had ik zelf ook al gelegd, maar alleen daarmee doe je dit nummer wel tekort, want Communions doet toch echt wel hun eigen ding met alle invloeden.
- Maribou State is electronische popmuziek die bij diverse stromingen leentjebuur speelt en steeds lekkerder gaat klinken. Toegankelijke muziek die na meerdere luisterbeurten alleen maar beter wordt.
- Vök: Indie-electro, zoals op de Facebookpagina van deze groep uit Hafnarfjörður / Akranes (IJsland) te lezen staat. Alsof Gus Gus een popplaatje heeft gemaakt... goede stem, heerlijke sound.
- Ariel Pink samen met Julia Holter hebben een soort lo-fi popliedje met Madonna's Everybody als basistrack gemaakt gemaakt. Klinkt heel knullig op een leuke charmante manier.
- Prince: ontspannend funkplaatje van deze levende legende, inclusief een knipoogje naar zijn nummer Kiss.
- Thomalla: mooie meditatieve deephouse uit Berlijn

Niet elke week langdurige verhalen, hoewel er opnieuw sprake is van een prachtige reeks aan nieuwe platen. Met veel herrie. Iedereen heeft weer erg zijn best gedaan.

The Strypes worden met de week volwassener met een prachtig eigen geluid. En de kwaliteit van The Editors verloochent zich uiteraard ook niet. Blij met ook weer eens een nieuwe single van Wavves. En wat te denken van de herrijzenis van Joe Jackson.

Geheel nieuw voor mij deze week zijn de Communions (met dank aan herman).
Maar dat blijkt dan ook een geheel nieuwe band uit Denemarken met een interessant debuut.

Afgelopen week was ik veel met mijn oude hitlijsten bezig. Omdat ik dit nog wel een tijdje zal blijven doen, besloot ik wat overzichten te maken van de oude noteringen. Een eigen hitdossier, zo je wilt. Daardoor kwam ik op oude hits die alweer wat in de vergetelheid waren geraakt. Zo kwam ik op Switch van Techniques, een nummer dat het in dit topic begin 2014 erg goed deed (kennen jullie hem nog?). Ik besloot eens te kijken of ie (het bleek één persoon te zijn) nog wat doet de laatste tijd, en hij bleek een half jaar terug een fantastische single uit te hebben gebracht: Don't You Want to Love. Veel meer dance-gericht dan Switch overigens; het is een heel mooie, sfeervolle plaat met een donker randje. Aanrader!

Ook de mij nog onbekende Navid Izadi heeft een zeer fijne dance-plaat uitgebracht. Het zanggedeelte doet me trouwens heel erg aan een ander nummer denken, maar ik kan er niet opkomen waaraan. Iemand een idee?

De andere grote verrassing is Prince. Ik ben geen heel grote liefhebber van Prince, al heeft hij zeker wat erg leuke nummers (Raspberry Beret, Controversy) maar ook nummers waar ik niks mee kan (zellfs Purple Rain). Ik volg hem dus niet echt maar heb wel begrepen dat onder de fans de consensus is dat ie niets interessants meer uitbrengt. Het zal best, maar dat geldt wat mij betreft dan niet voor deze single, want wat is Stare een heerlijk, swingend liedje met nog een leuke verwijzing naar Kiss. Hij kan het dus nog wel!

Tame Impala heb ik nooit zo veel mee gehad, maar met zijn laatste album heeft ie het roer flink omgegooid en vind ik de muziek ineens een stuk interessanter geworden. The Less I Know the Better is een mooi, dromerig popliedje. Sterk geproduceerd ook, met oog voor detail.

FKA twigs is één van de meest eigenzinnige artiesten van de laatste jaren, en bewijs dat eens te meer met haar nieuwe EP, en de bijbehorende ruim een kwartier durende videoclip (heel apart!). Ik ben een groot liefhebber van haar muziek maar het heeft wel altijd wat tijd nodig. Figure 8 begint me alvast goed te bevallen!

En bij het prachtige Amélie-esque Bleak and Beautiful is het kwartje ineens helemaal gevallen, met als beloning de nummer 1-positie.

- 17: Young Galaxy is een bandje dat een jaar of 2 terug aan de lopende band singles uitbracht en ineens helemaal stil viel. Nu zijn ze terug met deze heerlijke plaat. De Peaking Lights-remix vind ik net even wat lekker dan het origineel. Vlotte uptempo disco.
- 25: Navid Izadi wordt hierboven goed beschreven door Arrie. Lekkere dansplaat. De remix door MIdnight Magic is ook tof. Helaas weet ik ook niet waar dit op zou moeten lijken.
- 31: Petite Noir associeerde ik altijd met aERodynamIC op de een of andere manier en laat hij nu juist een mooie omschrijving hebben van deze muziek: "jaren '80 wave met wat electro, pop, post-punk en heel lichte Afrikaanse invloeden.". Ik dacht dat dit een Franse artiest was, maar hij komt uit Zuid-Afrika.
- 32: Lamb komt met een voor hun doen zwaar nummer, het heeft wel iets industrieels. Doet me ook wel wat aan Portishead denken zo.
- 37: Leftfield en Sleaford Mods klinkt alsof The Fall een electronisch hiphopalbum heeft gemaakt. Lekker nummer.
- 39: Sugar Hill heeft altijd wel een lekker commercieel geluid altijd, zonder dat het plat wordt. Deze track is gebouwd op een sample van Summertime van DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.

- Autre Ne Veut: De opvolger van Anxiety lijkt weer de grenzen op te zoeken van aanvaardbare meligheid en onverbloemde vuilheid, ook hier weet hij weer interessante dingen uit z'n PC te halen
- Tame Impala: Currents begint meer en meer pareltjes te tellen, ik had het graag live gezien op Pukkelpop gisteren, maar het werd Tyler, the Creator
- Låpsley: deze female Blake draait zachtjes aan de tempoknop zonder aan ingetogenheid in te boeten. Haar wel live gezien en ze weet de sfeer ook naar het podium te trekken (al kon ze niet op tegen de male Blake die weer ronduit magistraal was)
