Na emotionele ballad Karakter brengt Aafke Romeijn een totaal ander nummer als single uit. Een felle, geweldige tekst en lekker gruizige gitaren, zo ongeveer het tegenovergestelde dus.

LoneLady heeft bij mij een tijdje nodig gehad om op z'n plek te vallen.
Hinterland deed dat eerst nog niet, maar Bunkerpop heeft me weten te overtuigen met een heerlijke groove die aan de Talking Heads doet denken. En ook Hinterland bevalt me nu beter.

Lydia Ainsworth komt na Hologram weer met een prachtig, sfeervol popliedje. Run the Jewels hebben een abonnement op mijn top 40 en halen hem deze keer met hun Record Store Day-single. Deze mannen kunnen weinig fout doen bij mij.

Claude VonStroke doet eens wat anders dan we van hem gewend zijn. Zijn samenwerking met zanger JAW (je zou hem kunnen kennen van Claptone's No Eyes), doet denken aan The Weeknd, maar dan net even anders, op zo'n manier dat het mij meer doet.

En ten slotte Scuba met wat spannende, introverte electronica.

De lijst zit een beetje vast, eerlijk gezegd. Veel muziek wil nog niet weten van opstappen.

Toch ook wel weer aardige nieuwe nummers.
The Stereophonics timmeren al weer langere tijd achter elkaar aan de weg. Nu weer met de nieuwe single C'est la vie. FFS (Franz Ferdinand Sparks) hebben ook een volgend nummer, iets minder dan de vorige naar mijn smaak.

Ook Death Cab for a Cutie kijkt niet naar een track van een album meer of minder. Gelukkig is het bijna altijd goed en hoef je al die singles niet meer te kopen en gaat het alleen nog maar om de muziek.

Seafret had eerder dit jaar het nummer al uitgebracht maar was mij toen niet opgevallen. Daarom in de herhaling!

Week 22: wederom 17 deelnemers. Holy Holy valt van het podium en weet dus de net vergaarde nummer 1-positie niet te consolideren. Zij moeten deze afstaan aan de nummer 2 van vorige week, What Kind of Man (Nicolas Jaar Remix). Wat een redelijk unicum genoemd mag worden is dat Florence + the Machine en Torres exact hetzelfde aantal punten halen en ook precies evenveel stemmers hebben. Voor de tiebreaker voor de koppositie kijken we dan naar het nummer wat de meeste #1-posities heeft verzameld. What Kind of Man heeft er 1, Sprinter 0. Misschien dat Torres volgende week het stokje weer over kan nemen. We nemen onder andere afscheid van King Kunta en Dayzed Inn Daydreams die lange tijd genoteerd stonden. Tot mijn eigen verrassing pakt Alva Noto de koppositie. Tegenwoordig is het steeds vager wat nou precies een single is, en soms smokkel ik een beetje, als het te onduidelijk is. Dat was hier het geval. Alva Noto is natuurlijk ook helemaal geen singles-artiest, de man zal niet eens na hebben gedacht over een eventuele singlekeuze. Dit was het eerste nummer dat, voor het album verscheen, online werd gezet. Blijkbaar is er ook een video bij gemaakt, volgens mij door een fan, dus ach, waarom niet?
Het is een prachtig staaltje ambient, subtiel geproduceerd, waar je met koptelefoon helemaal bij weg kan dromen. Het meest toegankelijke nummer van het album ook, dus wat dat betreft een logische 'singlekeuze'.

De hoogste binnenkomer is zowaar een man die al ruim veertig jaar bezig is, en (zeker met Roxy Music) al tal van fantastische nummers op zijn naam heeft gestaan. Voor Johnny and Mary (een cover van Robert Palmer) werkt hij samen met Todd Terje, een samenwerking die al een tijdje bekend is en ook al op het album van Todd Terje te vinden was. Nu heeft Bryan Ferry het eindelijk als single uitgebracht, met clip, waarbij Todd Terje raar genoeg niet wordt genoemd.
Ferry's stem is niet meer wat het geweest is, maar het nummer wordt juist gedragen door de mooie productie van Todd Terje.

Met We Are Bodies weet er zowaar weer een sterke rocktrack mijn top 40 te vinden. Gebeurt tegenwoordig niet zo vaak meer, ik haal mijn favorieten meer uit andere genres als hiphop, electronic, dance, wereldmuziek. Ik had nog nooit van We Are Bodies gehoord, maar Capsize weet me wel erg te pakken.

Met Frail bewijst Crystal Castles het ook af te kunnen zonder zangeres Alice Glass. Het klinkt heel herkenbaar en vertrouwd, maar ook weer erg goed.

Love in the Night is heel uitgesponnen elektronisch nummer, haast een kwartier, waar niet eens zoveel in gebeurt. Toch weet het me te boeien. Eens zien of het verder weet te groeien.

Ja, de vocalen van Ferry doen hevig naar het verleden verlangen maar helaas, het is niet anders.
De 'zware' productie is inderdaad fraai, net als de muzikale omlijsting. Zo kun je ook nog lang mee

Met deze week een nieuwe nummer 1. Muse met Dead inside.
Het nummer gaat over een personage die hoop verliest en dus eigenlijk van binnen sterft. Hierdoor wordt diegene kwetsbaar en vatbaar voor duistere krachten. Bijvoorbeeld: je blijft niet meer bij je eigen kern, maar wordt beïnvloedbaar door de mensen om je heen. De overheid of instanties die gebruikmaken van angstbeïnvloeding bijvoorbeeld, maar kan net zo goed je familie of vrienden zijn. Uiteindelijk word je dan een van hen.
De zanger Matthew Bellamy heeft het zelf zien gebeuren in de relatie met zijn ex.

Bij mij valt ie als "single" dan weer minder, terwijl ik het in context van het gehele album geweldig vind, de LP is as we speak onderweg vanuit Duitsland naar mij

Omdat op Ten Love Songs van Susanne Sundfør naast de hier succesvolle singles Fade Away en Delirious nog een aantal sterke nummers staan, hield ik in de gaten of daar nog een single van uitkwam. En jawel, blijkbaar is Kamikaze in mei op single uitgebracht. Die mag meteen op 1 binnen! Op 15 een band waar twee oud-klasgenoten van mij in spelen, ik zag ze onlangs nog in voorprogramma The Van Jets. Iets voor fans van Joy Division misschien.
