Niet te geloven dat tie weer bovenaan staat...

Dan nog even dit, nu ik Song of the Marching Children in de lijst zie staan...
Gisteren stond in de (Zeeuwse) krant een betrekkelijk groot artikel over Earth & Fire te lezen.
Het artikel was gewijd aan het gisteren uitgebrachte verzameld werk van de band, (Memories, 9 cd’s plus de onvermijdelijke bonus cd).
Het bericht repte verder over het begin van de muzikale samenwerking tussen de gebr. Koerts die op 14-jarige leeftijd begonnen als The Singing Twins en later in 1968 Earth & Fire oprichtten.
Saillant detail uit dat verslag in de krant was (vond ik), dat de inbreng van Jerney Kaagman enigszins omstreden was. Haar typerende stem met haar sensuele uitstraling was volgens het management niet voldoende.
Doordat haar bereik als vocaliste in live optredens soms zwak was, werd er in die tijd naar een andere zangeres uitgekeken. En werd... (dat wist ik niet) Patricia Paay benaderd voor de rol van ‘leading lady’.
Paay piekerde daar niet over en liet de heren Koerts weten dat ze vond dat Jerney het hartstikke goed deed.
Jerney bleef, maar het heeft haar wel pijn gedaan, aldus het bericht in de krant.

De kritiek op Jerney Kaagman heb ik geloof ik ook wel eens opgetekend gelezen van de medebandleden. Van de andere kant vindt mevrouw Casartelli altijd dat Kaagman een herkenbare en karaktervolle stem heeft (en ze is doorgaans vrij kritisch op zangeressen). Daarnaast kan men zich retorisch afvragen hoeveel mensen spontaan meer dan één Earth & Fire lid bij naam kunnen noemen.
