Enigszins op gevoel gemaakt, met als resultaat dezelfde albums in de top 10 - alleen Highway 61 Revisited doet haasje-over met The Velvet Underground. Maar vooral: in al die tijd zijn er blijkbaar weinig 60's-toppers bijgekomen voor mij.

The Stooges waren vorig jaar (en in 2014) ook al de pechvogels op plek 51. Dit jaar zijn ze juist de geluksvogels op plek 50. Best vaak genoemd, maar wel het laagste gemiddelde van alle platen uit de top 50. Verder oude bekenden The Band (die na 22 lijstjes nog niet eens genoemd waren), Otis Redding en Isaac Hayes. Vooral die laatste is wat teleurstellend, omdat die hoog inzette (begon top 20), maar steeds verder wegzakte. Tot slot Jackson C. Frank die een paar plaatsen inlevert, maar weeral knap bij de bovenste 50 te vinden is.

Dillard & Clark terug in de top 50, daar moeten de countryliefhebbers het mee doen, vrees ik. The Zombies hadden een trouwe, maar beperkte fanbase. Alleen Jackson C. Frank (op 47) werd eveneens minder dan 10 keer genoemd. Valt echter wel uit de top 40, evenals Fairport Convention. Scott 4 stijgt weeral wat plekken en nadert de top 40. En Axis: Bold as Love is voor het eerst sinds 2014 weer bij de bovenste 50 te vinden. Lang leek het erop dat deze voor het eerst de top 40 ging halen, maar in het zicht van de haven ging het mis (door de lijst van ondergetekende ), het scheelt 14 puntjes met de nummer 40. Ook opvallend: Axis is de laagste van de 3 van Jimi’s, maar is wel de enige die bij iemand bovenaan stond.

En voordat we naar de top 40 gaan, eerst nog wat voetnoten bij de platen die het (net) niet gehaald hebben, want daar staat wel het e.e.a. in dat ik niet onbesproken voorbij kan laten gaan.

Zo is daar Tim Buckley, die zowel op de ondankbare plek 51 (Goodbye and Hello) en 57 (Happy Sad) staat. En ook wijlen Aretha Franklin wist de top 50 net niet te halen met I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (54) of Lady Soul (59). Vooral laatstgenoemde heeft lang op het randje gezeten van de top 50.

Maar de grootste verrassing, en dat schrijf ik volledig op conto van de absentie van Teunnis, is het ontbreken van Frank Zappa bij de bovenste 50. Voor het eerst is Hot Rats buiten de top 40 te vinden, en dus zelfs gelijk buiten de top 50 (52). Zeer opvallend voor een plaat die in 2013 nog op plek 12 te vinden was. En ook zijn muzikale zielsverwant Captain Beefheart mist de boot: zijn veilige melk staat op 55 en zijn vissenreplica op 64.

Als de informatie bij het album klopt kwam ie in 2014 al tot plaats 46 in de eindlijst. In ieder geval fijn dat dit geweldige album in de top vijftig staat!

Een aantal edities terug was dit nog mijn nummer 1. Inmiddels is deze wel iets weggezakt, maar nog altijd blijft dit een bijzonder sterke plaat. In mijn wereld heb ik de rare hersenspinsel dat er een soort competitie is tussen The Byrds en The Kinks, maar als die er al is, is deze dit jaar glansrijk gewonnen door The Kinks. #spoiler

Voor Sounds of Silence scheelde het overigens niet veel, maar bleef steken op plek 53. En ook Bookends (89) haalde de top 100.

Het heeft me altijd verbaasd dat deze plaat met zo’n hoog gemiddelde en aantal stemmen niet in de top 250 staat. Maar ook bij dit spel zou ik toch verwachten dat deze plaat hoger zou moeten scoren. Een snelle zoektocht leert dat er maar 11 platen zijn met een hoger gemiddelde en een hoger aantal stemmen. Ondanks (of misschien wel vanwege) het succes van Axis staat zijn debuut weeral ‘slechts’ op plek 35.

Op de eerste editie na zelfs altijd binnen de top 40 en dat is voor een Nederlands(talig)e plaat bijzonder knap.

Sketches of Spain weet ook de top 100 weer te halen (78), maar de hoogst genoteerde is uiteraard In a Silent Way. Er zijn maar weinig artiesten die in drie verschillende decennia goed weten te scoren (ervan uitgaande dat Bitches Brew het in de 70s gaat halen) en zeker voor een jazzartiest is dat bijzonder knap. Stker nog, In a Silent Way scoort nu voor het derde jaar op rij beter dan ooit!

Na een flinke stijging halverwege leek deze plaat de prestatie van vorig jaar te gaan verbeteren, maar zo ver kwam het uiteindelijk niet en staat deze ‘gewoon’ waar het al die andere jaren ook stond, ergens tussen 30 en 40. In Search of the Lost Chord wist helaas niet terug te keren in de top 100.

Mooie positie voor eindbaas Miles.
