Ik ben een groot liefhebber van jaren 80 B-films waarin het er niet zo gelikt aan toegaat zoals in de films van nu. En dan vooral met soundtracks waarin nummers voorkomen zoals Fire Inc.(inclusief actrice Diane Lane)'s Nowhere Fast. Geproduceerd door ene Jim Steinman, maar dat had een enkeling hier er vast al uitgehaald. Ik verwacht, zeker van vigil, veel positieve reacties op dit nummer

Verder onderaan nog enkele nieuwkomers van Lionel Richie en Bruce Springsteen's side-kick Little Steven. Geen onaardige nummers, maar ze zullen niet echt door gaan zetten. En dan nog Yvonne Gage die met haar team handig insprong op Michael Jackson's roem. Erg makkelijk allemaal, maar het klinkt niet verkeerd.

En zo zitten we inmiddels alweer op de helft van 1984, time flies .......

Drie nieuwelingen deze week en we trappen af met een uitstekend product uit eigen land The President met That's The Way That It Is, een lekker stevig AOR nummer die zijn weg helaas niet weet te vinden in de Top 40, maar in deze lijst wel zijn waardering krijgt.

Nog een voortreffelijke band uit eigen land De Dijk die ook al geen hits aan de lopende band scoren in de Top 40, maar het nummer Elke Keer had daarin zeker niet misstaan.

Steve Perry (Journey) op de solotoer en She's Mine voldoet ook zeker aan wat Journey ingrediënten, een fijne rockballad met heerlijk gitaarwerk is het resultaat.

Een nieuwe nummer 1, The Chills met Pink Frost. Jammer dat ik hem verder bij niemand zie

Zes nieuwe songs, de hoogste van de Australische band The Apartments. Het zit een beetje tussen The Chills en The Go-Betweens in, dus dat zal hier verder ook niet scoren

Verder met dank aan aan 50tracks mooie ontdekkingen in de vorm van The Fleshtones en vooral April Showers (heerlijk nummer!).

Daar voeg ik nog aan toe The Kane Gang. Als de term sophisti-pop ooit ergens van op toepassing is, dan wel op deze single. Het klinkt ook nog eens erg hitgevoelig.

The Chills kwamen bij mij 4 weken geleden binnen en daarna zijn ze op onverklaarbare wijze uit de lijst gevallen. Door de opmerking van Johan nu een verdiende re-entry.

Poeha komt met Nowhere Fast van Fire Inc.. Ik had Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young in de bubbling under. Als ik het goed zie was die net iets eerder (ik ben laat) maar de releasedata van de soundtrack singles zijn ook wat vaag. In ieder geval typisch Steinman bombast die in kleine porties een guilty pleasure is.

Mooi dat deze van de Kane Gang opgepikt wordt. De voorganger Smalltown Creed had het hier moeilijk.

Nu Johan The Apartments uit Australie pusht tijd voor nog twee Aussie-bands: Icehouse en Jimmy Barnes z'n Cold Chisel. Twee bands die altijd de moeite waard zijn.

Verder goede indie rock van The June Brides, Abrasive Wheels (punky) en de Goth-variant van Flesh For Lulu.

Een rustig weekje, met nog niet besproken (onverkochte) binnenkomers van Tim Finn en Bob Dylan. De laatste had nog een mooie track van zijn album Infidels in gedachten.

Alle singles die Bob Dylan van zijn albums afhaalt doen al jarenlang niets meer. Ik geloof dat Knockin' on heaven's door in 1973 voor de laatste keer de Top 40 heeft gehaald. Zelfs het onvolprezen Hurricane part 1 en 2 wist de verkoopbakken niet te halen. Van Dylan kocht men direct het album.

Tim Finn verkocht wel singles, toch in ieder geval Fraction too much Friction eerder dit jaar. Maar ook hier haperde het vervolg. Hij bracht een prachtige limited edition uit: In a minor key dus met een gratis live single. Een dubbel single als je het goed bekijkt. Maar het mocht niet baten, hoe prachtig en breekbaar In a Minor key ook is.

Tipparade: week 26 van 1984.

1. Scritti Politti - Absolute
Een nummer dat productioneel typisch is voor die tijd maar uiteindelijk zit het goed in elkaar door het funky en erg dansbare ritme en die hoge ijle en verleidelijke stem.
Cijfer: 7,5

12. Lodewyck Van Avezaath - Verrek! Zeg Kerel, Ben Jij 't
Kan nog op een feestje maar artistiek en zeker vocaal stelt dit niets voor en het is niet grappig genoeg. Naarmate het nummer vordert irriteert het mij steeds meer.
Cijfer: 2,5

13. Diana Ross & Julio Iglesias - All Of You
Met dit soort mierzoete duetten moeten ze bij mij ook niet afkomen vooral als ze zo glad zijn geproduceerd maar het werd natuurlijk een hit. Laat Julio Iglesias zich bij het Spaans houden want zijn Engels is niet zo best.
Cijfer: 4

15. Lionel Richie - Stuck On You
Dit is ook zoet en glad maar niet zo erg als vorig nummer, mede door de meer sobere productie. Ook zijn zang kan ik beter verdragen, er zit toch wat meer soul in.
Cijfer: 5,5

18. Ollie and Jerry - Breakdance ...There's No Stopping Us
Breakdance was een rage die tijd maar de hits daarrond stellen weinig voor en klinken nu gedateerd zoals deze. Vocaal is het ook mager.
Cijfer: 3

21. Carol Line - Single Of The Year
Ik kende dit nummer niet het komt mij wel bekend over. Zit in de categorie 'kan gaan' maar maar komt op alle vlakken net tekort om een evergreen te worden.
Cijfer: 5,5

22. Tom Robinson - Back In The Old Country
Van Tom Robinson heb ik nog geen enkel album beluisterd maar blijkbaar heeft hij toch wat te bieden. Leuk nummer, klinkt natuurlijk en vrolijk zonder productionele poespas en zingen kan hij ook beslist.
Cijfer: 7,5

23. The Shorts - Helemaal Té Gek
The Shorts met baard in de keel, ik had erger verwacht maar het ritme vind ik leuk wat ik niet van de tekst kan zeggen.
Cijfer: 4

24. Prince - When Doves Cry
Ik kan hier geen fatsoenlijke clip vinden maar iedereen kent het nummer toch. Terechte Prince-klassieker van jewelste mede door het ritme, de aparte percussie en subtiele en aanstekelijke synths. Geweldige intro ook.
Cijfer: 9,5

25. Bonnie & José - Cassandra
Mooie tekst maar de uitvoering en productie hadden beter gekund en het nummer is wat aan de melige en vooral gladde kant.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Everything But The Girl - Each & Every One
Jazzy pop, heeft een zwoele maar ook melancholieke sfeer. De wat lome stem pas er goed in en de productie is gelukkig natuurlijk gehouden.
Cijfer: 7,5

27. André Van Duin - Want Het Is Zomer
André Van Duin meer op de serieuze toer met een cover van Shake. Het gaat hem zeker niet slecht af en hij kan degelijk zingen.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. De Havenzangers - Vanavond Sla Ik Toe !
Sommigen zijn blijkbaar nooit uitgefeest. Hoewel dit nummer nog enigszins meevalt maar heeft natuurlijk een korte houdbaarheid.

Dit klinkt nog wat meliger mede door de kazige synths (typisch voor dit soort schagers). Zang en tekst zijn ook niet al te best.

Een nummer van die tijd dat toch tijdloos klinkt. De synths worden hier op een gepaste en sfeervolle wijze ingebracht en de lijzige stem weet Billy Idol hier goed te benutten.

De top 3 blijft ongewijzigd, maar in de top 10 komen drie reusachtige stijgers binnen; Each and everyone stijgt zelfs 21 plaatsen, van 27 naar 6.

Op 23 komt OMD binnen met Talking loud and clear, dat een heerlijke relaxed zomers sfeertje heeft. Zo mogen ze van mij wel commercie in hun geluid integreren (een stuk leuker dan voorganger Locomotion).

Op 24 komt Bronski Beat binnen met Small town boy. Ongetwijfeld waren er eerder gay artiesten geweest die een hit scoorden, maar volgens mij was dit de eerste keer dat het zo openlijk was. De tekst gaat over een jongen die opgroeit in een klein stadje en daar gepest wordt en door zijn ouders niet begrepen wordt en dus maar met de trein naar de grote stad gaat. De muziek was modern en behoorlijk swingend maar de zang juist erg dramatisch (in de goede zin van het woord), dus dat gaf ook een tegenstelling die schuurde. Ik vond het erg goed, maar tegelijk lastig om in mijn top 40 te zetten, want mijn broers lazen mijn top 40 ook en ik was nog lang niet out. Dus hoe hoog kon ik zo'n plaat zetten? Gelukkig was de song zo goed dat zij hem ook in hun top 10 zetten (we maakten toen nog een gezamenlijke familielijst elke week), dus durfde ik het ook wel. Op 1 zou hij echter niet komen, en ik kan niet zeggen of dat was omdat ik Each and everyone echt wel beter vond, of dat ik nummer 1 net iets te ver vond gaan. In de NL top 40 kwam hij trouwens ook tot 1, iets wat ik nauwelijks kon geloven.
In juni 1984 had ik net eindexamen gedaan en na de zomervakantie zou ik gaan studeren in Leiden. Ik was dus zelf ook een beetje die Small town boy uit het liedje. Vele jaren later zou ik nog mijn eerste jaar in Leiden in een korte roman verwerken, waarbij op de eerste pagina als een soort motto de eerste regels van Small town boy in het verhaal verwerkt waren. Die roman wilde ik nog wel laten uitgeven, maar toen ik contact kreeg met een uitgever, schrok ik er zelf voor terug, vooral omdat ik de hoofdpersonen met realistische precisie geschilderd had.

Op 25 ook nog David Sylvian, bij de collega's al lang genoteerd maar nu pas, dankzij de Verrukkelijke 15, bij mij binnengekomen. Red guitar is zijn eerste echte solosingle, van zijn eerste album Brilliant trees (met dat fenomenale titelnummer). De single heeft ook die mooie Sylvian-sfeer en stem natuurlijk, maar is niet zo hemels, eerder aards. Vandaar een mooie top 10-notering, maar geen top 100 Aller Tijden werk.

Op 30 Tom Robinson met Back in the old country. Inderdaad, die zong al jaren eerder Glad to be gay, maar ik betwijfel of ik dat toen wist. In ieder geval was dat nooit een hit geweest in Nederland. Back in the old country is een gezellige meezinger, maar niet echt bijzonder. Toch haalde het nog wel de tipparade.

Op 31 het Klein Orkest met de bekende tekst over Oost- en West-Berlijn. Muzikaal is het erg sober, het gaat om de tekst. Harrie Jekkers doet in de tekst alsof er op het Westen even veel aan te merken valt als op de communisten, wat toch eigenlijk erg idioot was, maar toen in VARA-kringen werd dat wel gewaardeerd. Ik was het zelf dus niet met de tekst eens, maar tegelijk zitten er wel mooie zinnen in (de vogels die het niet uitmaakt of ze in West of Oost zitten). Overigens dacht ik jarenlang dat hij zong dat in Oost-Berlijn pas in de parade de wacht gewisseld werd (terwijl hij bedoelde dat in paradepas de wacht werd gewisseld).

En op 32 ook nog een fijne discosingle van Scritti Politti, Absolute. Om een of andere reden werd deze disco wel muzikaal correct verklaard en door de Verrukkelijke 15 gepushed; ik vind het ook een lekkere single, maar begrijp niet goed waarom dit nou wel 'kon'.

Edit: overigens lijkt het me wel logisch dat je dat niet zomaar gaat delen, als het zo persoonlijk is.
