Remember David snijdt door mijn top 40 als een mes door boter. En gelukkig zie ik hem ook bij mijn collega's de goede kant op gaan.

Op 20 komt een ballad van The Eurythmics binnen, Julia, de opvolger van het nogal lelijke Sexcrime (beide van de soundtrack van 1984). Gelukkig klinkt Julia juist erg fraai, mooie, extra vervormde vocalen van Annie en een bijna percussieloos bed van toetsen van Dave Stewart.

Op 31 de eerste single van The Bangles in mijn top 40, Going down to Liverpool. Een opvallende titel voor een Amerikaanse band, vond ik altijd. Hier hoor je een prettige poprock-single met mooie vocale harmonieën. Als het geen all-femaleband was, zou het niet erg opvallen.

Op 33 alweer een uitstekende single van Heaven 17, toch wel een wat onderschatte band. Vooral de stem van zanger Martyn Ware tilt het op, maar ook het swingende geluid overtuigt.

Op 36 nog een bescheiden entry voor het Amerikaanse Dazz Band met het wat aparte Let it all blow.

Tipparade: week 8 van 1985.

1. Madonna - Material Girl
Geen groots nummer van Madonna maar wel een aanstekelijke en vlotte popsong die nu nog fris klinkt waarbij haar bakvisstemmetje in de juiste plooi valt.
Cijfer: 7

16. Pia Zadora - Let's Dance Tonight
Dit is mij te banale disco en een bijzondere stem heeft Pia Zadora ook niet. Die gitaarsolo vind ik er ook niet bij passen.
Cijfer: 4

21. S.B.B.L - Purple Mix
Dit soort mixen zijn compleet overbodig en inspiratieloos en voegen totaal niets toe aan de muziekwereld. Niet meer dan geldklopperij.
Cijfer: 2

26. Dolly Dots - Where Were You (When I Needed You)
De hitmachine van Dolly Dots begint te stokken en begrijpelijk. Dit nummer blijft niet hangen, de productie te mechanisch en te tijdsgebonden en hier komt de zang ook niet uit de verf.
Cijfer: 4

27. Anny Schilder - Love Is....
Dit nummer met kinderkoor heeft nog een groot BZN-gehalte en heeft net als vele hits van haar vorige band te lijden onder de melige arrangementen al heeft het nog enige charme.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Fun Fun - Give Me Your Love
Dit kon alleen die tijd een hit worden. Banale en erg vergankelijke disco dat te weinig om het lijf heeft en teveel van de erg tijdsgebonden mechanische productie moet hebben.

29. Normaal - Steen-Stoal En Sentiment
Normaal heb ik altijd boerenrock genoemd maar pretendeert ook niet meer te zijn. Vermakelijk zonder meer.

30. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
Een fan van deze band ben ik nooit geweest maar dit nummer is wel geslaagd. De donkere en grimmige sfeer mede door de uitwaaierende gitaren komt goed tot uiting en tegelijk klinkt het niet te bombastisch en net poppy genoeg.

Volgens mij werden zowel Leonard Cohen als Eric Clapton in 1985 al als oude mannen gezien. En vermoedelijk om die reden geen knip voor de neus meer waard. Fossielen uit de sixties.

30 jaar later zijn beiden nog steeds "still going strong". Je hebt je leeftijd nu eenmaal niet voor het uitkiezen in het leven en eigenlijk, op hun hele carrière bekeken, begonnen beiden juist blijmoedig aan een 3e of 4e nieuwe start.

Eric Clapton verraste vriend en vijand met het album Behind the Sun met heel wat ouderwets scheurwerk, vleugen blues. Wel een jaren '80 productie en op de helft van het album de harde mokerslagen van Phil Collins. De andere helft, vaak als de Amerikaanse gezien, bevat Forever Man, een comeback single die Clapton weer helemaal op de kaart zette. Hij kon er zeker weer voor 30 jaar tegenaan.

Een relatief rustige weeklijst dit keer, de Top 6 zit vast en staat David Bowie inmiddels alweer voor de 4e week op nummer 1 al komt Killing Joke wel steeds ietsjes dichterbij .....

A Flock Of Seagulls met Remember David komt binnenstormen op nummer 10, de Commodores en de Cocteau Twins complementeren de overige nieuwkomers in de lijst en voor de rest wordt er maar mondjesmaat winst geboekt in de weeklijst door sommige artiesten.

Zes binnenkomers, waaronder één re-entry. Op 15 The Colourfield, een nieuwe naam maar met oude bekenden van Fun Boy Three en The Specials. Het ska/reggaeverleden is op deze single geheel afgeschud, het betreft verrassend genoeg een ouderwetse romantische ballad, compleet met gastzangeres. En deze sound bevalt mij prima. Lief is het juiste woord.

Op 18 de nieuwe Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, terwijl Rattlesnakes nog zijn 16e week haalt (een zeer hoog aantal in mijn top 40). Forest fire is niet zo vlot melodieus, maar heeft wel een sterke opbouw, van traag en miniem naar woest en meeslepend; naar het eind toe schrijnt en schuurt de elektrische gitaar.

Op 21 een echte klassieker, Love like blood van Killing Joke. Het intro alleen is al goud waard. De sound is hard, kil en compromisloos; het is dus opvallend dat het een grote top 10-hit is geworden. Maar ja, tegelijk klinkt het ook vlot en het refrein is goed meezingbaar. In top 40-termen is Killing Joke een one-hit wonder gebleven, maar wij weten wel beter.

Op 28 een heel opvallende binnenkomer, namelijk volkszanger André Hazes. Opvallend omdat dit zijn eerste hit in mijn lijst is, en niet toevallig is het nu geen smartlap, maar een vlot rock n roll-nummer met een optimistische tekst waar je vrolijk van wordt. Ik heb destijds vast wat reserves en drempels moeten overwinnen voor ik besloot deze erin te zetten.

Op 32 een re-entry van Let's go crazy. Kennelijk werd hij toen alsnog een hit en vond ik dat hij er tot nu toe wat bekaaid van af was gekomen.

Op 35 een typische Howard Jones single, misschien wel de meest eighties-klinkende act van de eighties. En ook hier een optimistische inslag.

Tipparade: week 9 van 1985.

1. Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough - Live
Er staan zoveel live-versies daarvan op You Tube, ik denk dat dit de juiste is. De sfeer en ambiance zijn er en het is ook een erg aanstekelijk en dansbaar synthipopnummer.
Cijfer: 8,5

19. Santana - Say It Again
Kan niet tippen aan zijn jaren '70-hits, het is mij wat gladjes en vrij doorsnee waarbij de karakteristieke gitaarsolo nog voor herkenning en kwaliteit zorgt.
Cijfer: 6,5

21. Narada Michael Walden (Duet with Patti Austin) - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme
Vrolijk nummer in de tijdgeest maar blijft wel overeind door de goede soulvolle zang. Het refrein blijft ook als een oorwurm hangen.
Cijfer: 7

22. Jantje Koopmans en Zijn Band - Rode Rozen En Witte Seringen
Dit soort clichématige hoempapaschlagers laat ik over aan mensen in het bejaardentehuis maar ik ben daar nog lang niet daarin.
Cijfer: 2,5

24. Agnetha Fältskog - I Won't Let You Go
Redelijk nummer met aanstekelijk refrein en prima zang maar de magie evenals de genialiteit van de Abba-songs is hier ver te zoeken.
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Raymond Van Het Groenewoud - Stapelgek Op Jou
De comebacksingle van Raymond die duidelijk invloeden van Doe Maar verraadt met name het ritme en de arrangementen - het is ook geproduceerd door Henny Vrienten die tevens de bas speelt - en ook Raymond lijkt zelfs een beetje te zingen als hem. Toch wel een prima single ondanks of juist dankzij het Doe Maar-gehalte.
Cijfer: 8,5

26. Nancy Boyd - Satellites
Een werwerpniemendalletje dat nu door iedereen vergeten is. Zang, melodie en arrangementen getuigen niet bepaald van inventiviteit.
Cijfer: 3,5

27. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions - Forest Fire
Dan veel liever iets tijdlozer zoals dit nummer. Op zijn zang ben ik niet zo happig maar Lloyd Cole is wel een even eigenzinnig als groot songschrijverstalent getuige dit nummer met even sfeervolle als gepaste arrangementen.
Cijfer: 8

28. Rob De Nijs - Johnny Soldaat
De arrangementen (synths en syndrums) zijn te tijdsgebonden maar voor het overige vind ik dit nummer boven de gemiddelde Nederlandstalige hit stijgen en ik hou ook van zijn warme stem.
Cijfer: 6,5

29. Albert West - Dance On Little Girl
Een zoutloze en aalgladde cover een nummer van Paul Anka, laat ik het maar houden bij het origineel dat met veel meer passie is gezongen.
Cijfer: 3,5

30. The Associates - Breakfast
Een melancholiek, sfeervol, breekbaar en spannend nummer door piano en subtiele violen gedragen, had destijds beslist meer aandacht verdiend. Herwaardering voor dit prachtige nummer a.u.b.!

Lorelei staat deze week nog steeds fier aan kop..blijft natuurlijk een prachtig nummer en het is ook wel een van hun bekendste.
Verder een aantal nieuwen in de top 10 en tussen 11-20 een aantal flinke stijgers.

The Waterboys komen als hoogste nieuwe binnen met hun laatste single van A Pagan Place.
Na Church Not Made With Hands weer een prachtig en vooral leuk nummer vind ik. Dit is de lange versie zoals Mike Scott m eigenlijk bedoeld had. Doordat vinyl een beperkte speelduur had werd dit nummer ingekort. Overigens is de Remaster van het album A Pagan Place meer dan de moeite waard..vele prachtige bonustracks die niet onderdoen voor de albumtracks.

Ook al doen The Chameleons nog steeds mee met One Flesh..in de Top 10 zelfs..toch nu al de volgende single van hetzelfde album..genaamd Nostalgia..ook weer prachtig.

The Blow Monkeys komen ook binnen deze week met het werkelijk prachtige Wildflower. Ik ken de band zelf verder nog niet goed..maar dit is zeker een opmaat naar meer

Verder wordt de lijst gecomplementeerd door het gevoelige Glam To Wham van het Australische The Takeaways..ik heb altijd wel een zwak voor dit soort nummers.

Als laatste nog een aardig en leuk electronisch nummer van Yello..onder anderen hier vast ook wel bekend.

De nieuwen van de anderen hier vind ik zelf ook erg aangenaam over het algemeen en dan met name die van de Paisley Underground band True West...prachtige single en een genre die me recentelijk zeer weet te bekoren.
Verder nog het mooie Crazy For You van Madonna en een van de bekendste nummers van een van mijn favoriete bands The Nits..live altijd een genot en een feestje om mee te maken

We noteren een nieuwe nummer 1 en die is van Killing Joke met Love Like Blood en het komt ook niet zo heel vaak voor dat de nummer 1 in alle lijsten te vinden is oftewel een "klein primeurtje"

De Simple Minds komen als hoogste nieuweling binnen op nummer 9 met Don't You (Forget About Me) en is één van de 6 nieuwkomers deze week.

A Flock Of Seagulls, de Commodores stijgen goed door in hun 2e week en ook Lindsey Buckingham zit weer redelijk in de lift na een klein verval vorige week, al lijken musician en ik de enige te zijn die in deze single geloven.

Wat kan een mens nog toevoegen aan zo'n lijstje met nieuwe binnenkomers? En dan heb ik er nog 10 moeten laten afvallen, het aanbod ligt hoog.

Zo'n nieuwe Foreigner is natuurlijk onvermijdelijke klasse. Eén van mijn favoriete hits van 1985. Maar het is wel dringen, daar bovenin.

Volgens mij is Tears for Fears wel 18 Maart.

Petty had ik ook rond half Maart staan maar wiki zegt blijkbaar 28 Feb

Grappig dat de Wiki zelfs rept over 22 maart, maar het feitelijk heeft over het Verenigd Koninkrijk. In de VS komt het nummer op 9 maart binnen in de bubbling under en op 16 maart in de Billboard Hot 100 (70).

Wij hadden eerst Shout dat een grote hit werd, de Amerikanen kwamen pas met Shout na Everybody wants to rule the world. Rare lui, die Amerikanen...

Ik kan ook geen bubbling under chart van 1985 vinden..maar die zal er vast zijn..wel n lijst van
singles met entries in de Hot 100 16 Maart..daar zitten Tff..Foreigner en Petty bij..

Die TFF van hierboven is engeland/Europa. Amerika kan anders liggen. Zeker omdat TfF net enorm was doorgebroken in Amerika en Tom Petty daar al een hele grote jongen was. met 16 maart is een releasedatum van rond de 8 a 10 maart niet heel vreemd en aangezien het aan het eind van deze week ook tegen die data loopt is het misschien ook niet iets om ons heel druk over te maken
