Even weinig tekst maar voor mijn gevoel was het nieuwe nummer van Katrina & The Waves aardiger toen het oorspronkelijk werd uitgebracht (en zeker geen hit werd) dan later in de herhaling. Hier was het nog een fris en aardig bandje met grappige uptempo rock, dat het ook verdient om een hit te worden.

Voorlopig is wel rust bovenaan mijn top 40, want daar staat The unforgettable fire.

Op 30 komt Los Lobos binnen met (voor mij) de kennismaking, Will the wolf survive? De goede verstaander ziet dat hier een woordspeling gebruikt is: Los Lobos betekent de De Wolven, dus het liedje gaat kennelijk over henzelf. Een typisch Amerikaans licht folk-getint gitaarliedje.

Op 31 weer een kennismaking, nu met de Duitse superster Herbert Grönemeyer, Flugzeuge im Bauch. Ik weet eigenlijk wel zeker dat ook hier Frits Spits achter het succes zat van deze single. Het is een emotioneel gezongen ballad, en wat mij betreft de sterkste die ik van hem ken. Nog geen hitsucces in NL, dat komt pas later, bij Halt mich.

Op 32 een supervlot deuntje van Engels duo Go West, tevens hun enige hitsucces in NL. De synthesizermelodie schalt de speakers uit, maar ook verder zit het goed in elkaar.

Op 34 gaat Alison Moyet op de nostalgische tour met That ole devil called love, een heerlijk relaxed luisterliedje dat heel goed bij haar stem past. Je waant je zo weer in de jaren veertig.

Op 37, maar achteraf de beste van het vijftal, Philip Bailey met Walking on the Chinese Wall, prachtig gezongen met een falsetstem, maar ook geweldig geproduceerd met inventieve drums, EWF-blazers en mysterieuze koortjes.

Tipparade: week 13 van 1985.

1. Morris Day & The Time - The Bird
Geproduceerd door Prince en afkomstig uit Purple Rain. Dit klinkt funky en energiek en het swingt als een trein, als het door Prince zelf was ingezongen was het wel een grote hit.
Cijfer: 7,5

21. Godley and Creme - Cry
De clip zal ons het meest bijblijven maar daarnaast is het ook een ijzersterke en onvergetelijke popsong dat ook gaaf geproduceerd is.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Belouis Some - Imagination
Die funky gitaar is de grootste troef evenals de sax op de achtergrond, verder is dit een redelijke maar weinig opvallende popsong waarbij de titel teveel herhaald wordt.
Cijfer: 6

26. Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - Pie Jesu
Een romantische popsong dat naar klassiek neigt maar ik kan nauwelijks verstaan wat er gezongen wordt. Past wel op een late avond.
Cijfer: 6

27. G'Race - Nothing In This World
Dit nummer heeft niet goed de tand des tijds doorstaan door de kazige synths. De zang is ook wat vlak en het refrein spreekt niet genoeg aan hoewel het ritmisch niet onaardig is.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Kimera and The Operaiders with The London Symphony Orchestra - The Lost Opera
Is dit de juiste versie? Hoeft van mij niet, kitscherig tot en met.
Cijfer: 3

29. Yello - Vicious Games
Yello schuwt de kitsch duidelijk ook niet. Dit kan ik iets meer aanhoren dan vorig nummer (vooral door de gitaar) maar songmatig stelt dit te weinig voor.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Tabasco Affair - We Belong Together
Dit stelt niets voor en is terecht vergeten: clichématig tot en met (lijkt een nummer voor het eurovisiesongfestival), zwakke zang en uitspraak en slechte productie.

Een nek aan nek race tussen The Smiths en U2 die deze week in het voordeel van The Smiths uitpakt met een verschil van slechts 1 punt, terwijl Foreigner ook nog steeds niet is uitgeschakeld voor de nummer 1 positie.

Tears For Fears komt als hoogste nieuwe binnen op 10 met Everybody Wants To Rule The World een erg aanstekelijk nummer mede door het fijne ritme dat door deze single loopt.

Het schijnt niet uit te maken welk nummer The Smiths uitbrengen, want met gemak vind ook Shakespear's Sister zijn weg in de weeklijst.

Harold Faltermeyer, True West en Rick Springfield met het powerspektakel Celebrate Youth zijn de overige nieuwkomers deze week.

Historisch lijkt me, niet? Smiths met 3 platen in de weeklijst? Nog niet eerder voorgekomen lijkt me, voor welke artiest dan ook

Beetje overdreven ook, niet?
Nog niet eerder "gehoord" dat een artiest in korte tijd (en dan heb ik het niet over maanden) 3 singles uitbrengt. Maar ik ben dan ook niet van de statistieken, dus mogelijk is dit praktisch dan ook wel degelijk zo gegaan, of vaker gedaan.

In Tua Nua zullen de meeste mensen kennen van maar 1 liedje. Deze single was hun eerste voor het grote Island label. De single is mede geschreven door Sinead O’Connor die toen nog erg onbekend was. Tijdens de eerste periode van de band zat ook Steve Wickham nog bij In Tua Nua. Deze violist zou later een grote inbreng hebben in de zeg maar keltische periode van The Waterboys.

Op 18 komt Dead Or Alive met Lover Come Back To Me binnen en ik weet nu al dit gaat niet door iedereen gepruimd worden maar I Love It, lekkere foute muziek ..... maar dat mag ook wel eens een keer, afkomstig uit de Stock, Aitken en Waterman fabriek en daar gaan we de komende tijd nog heel veel mee te maken krijgen of je het nu leuk vindt of niet.

Mai Tai met History is natuurlijk een discoknaller van Internationale allure en kwam in Engeland in de Top 10 terecht, een Nederlands product waar je best trots op mag zijn.

Howard Jones levert met Look Mama zijn volgende single af in zijn inmiddels herkenbare muziekstijl en koerst weer af op een Top 10 notering in Engeland, in Nederland gaat deze single in ieders geval niet scoren.

Bryan Adams komt met wat mij betreft met één van zijn betere nummers aanzetten en die heet Heaven, een zeer fraaie popballad is het resultaat.

So Far Away is de 1e single afkomstig van dat machtige album Brothers In Arms waarbij elk nummer raak is en dan is deze single slechts een voorproefje van al dat moois

De nieuwe binnenkomers allemaal deze week eens een keer uit jullie lijsten gehaald waarvoor

En dan toch maar die dekselse Bryan Adams als hoogste binnenkomer. Een aantal keren in zijn carriere kan ik hem wel velen, zoals bij zijn single Run to you. Maar niet altijd.

Dat geldt eigenlijk ook voor Simply Red. Ik las ergens dat het wel weer voor foute muziek zou worden aangezien, maar in 1985 werd er zo nog niet over Simply Red gedacht. Dat kwam later. Het debuut album, waarbij Money's too tight to mention als eerste single in Nederland zelfs over het hoofd werd gezien, werd behoorlijk positief ontvangen.

Simply Red bleek, over de gehele geschiedenis bekeken, over een niet al te groot repertoire te beschikken. Bracht veel van hetzelfde (de spoeling werd dun) en werd door de tijd ingehaald. Maar in 1985 was dat allemaal nog niet aan de hand. Toen was het modern en een tikje apart. En als je er liefhebber van bent is er 30 jaar later nog steeds geen man over boord.

Een nieuwe nummer 1..wel dezelfde band The Headmaster Ritual, prachtige opener van Meat Is Murder. Lotus Eaters nu op 2. The Triffids en ABC stijgen flink.

Hoogste nieuwe deze week is van mijn favoriete band Cocteau Twins. Lorelei verlaat deze week de top 50 en de volgende staat alweer klaar. Dit keer het titelnummer van de EP Aikea-Guinea.
Cocteau Twins brachten tot 1990 nauwelijks singles uit, maar wel een stuk of 10 EP's die een grote aanwinst zijn voor hun discografie, want ze bevatten meestens allemaal erg sterke nummers. Dit is er 1 van, prachtig zwevend rustig nummer met engelachtige zang.

Propaganda komt met hun bekendste nummer, Duel. Ik heb het altijd een erg leuk en sterk nummer gevonden, het verveelt me nooit. Het verbaast me dat het nergens een nummer 1 hit geworden is.

De 2e nieuwe van mezelf is het openingsnummer van The Lost EP van The Chills, een mooi nummer! The Lost EP zou later ook terecht komen op de Kaleidoscope compilatie.

Verder nog 5 nieuwen van de anderen. Take on Me behoeft geen nadere introductie behalve dan dat ik als kind de clip indrukwekkend vond en niet begreep waarom de zanger in elkaar geslagen werd.
Bronski Beat komt met een mooie cover van Donna Summer en The Colour Field komt met een mooi verstild nummer.
Een heerlijk Post-Punk nummer van For Against en een mooi nummer van The Woodentops, waar de broer van Pete deFreitas in zit, die ook al 2 zussen had in The Heart Throbs

Tipparade: week 15 van 1985.

1. Bronski Beat & Marc Almond - I Feel Love
Oorspronkelijk van Donna Summer en het is een heuse dance-klassieker mede door de baanbrekende productie van Georgio Moroder. Ik begrijp niet wat Bronski Beat & Marc Almond met deze cover willen bewijzen, het klinkt fletser, bij momenten bijna irritant en voegt totaal niet toe aan het onovertrefbare origineel.
Cijfer: 4,5

8. Jenny Burton - Bad Habits
Klinkt funky met licht jazzy trekjes maar ook vrij zoutloos en de eigentijdse productie maakt het niet beter op. Dat niemand op een album van haar heeft gestemd bewijst dat zij in de vergetelheid is geraakt.

Deze gladde AOR met overheersende synths vind ik één van de vervelendste en meest gedateerde stromingen in de rock maar de krachtige stem en de melodie vergoeden wel veel.

22. Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Simple Minds richten zich definitief op de hitlijsten met gladdere en meer poppy songs maar hier zijn de kwaliteiten en hun karakteristieke sound alsook de mystieke sfeer nog aanwezig. Pas in de jaren '90 zou het echt bergafwaarts gaan.

26. Mai Tai - History
Vocaal worden ze steeds beter en het is een behoorlijke en swingende popsong. Misschien dat de synths te dominant zijn maar dit vind ik hun beste single.

Op het eerste gehoor een vrolijke meezinger maar met duistere ondertoon. Die gitaarsound vind ik geweldig en bepaalt de sfeer.

29. Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (Contemplating)
Een Britse soul/funkband met behoorlijke vocalen maar te glad geproduceerd om mij te bekoren, de jaren '80 hebben de soul geen goed gedaan. Het nummer is ook wat langdradig.

30. Katrina and The Waves - Walking On Sunshine
Dit nummer blijft wel goed overeind, het klinkt ook erg enthousiast en vrolijk, inderdaad een feel-goed nummer.

Terwijl hij bij de meeste anderen na 2 maanden op de weg omlaag is, komt hij eindelijk bij mij binnen: Don't you van de Simple Minds, op 25. En in dit geval vind ik het wel raar, dat de releasedate van een filmtiteltrack van een toen ook al redelijk bekende band, kennelijk 8 weken ligt voordat hij in NL op de radio kwam en in de tipparade kwam. Misschien omdat de film zelf in de UK of de VS eerder uitkwam? Hoe dan ook, Don't you is een hypercatchy song met veel herhaling en la-la-la, maar toch ook genoeg eigenzinnigheid en spanning om van een sterke song te spreken. En zoals bekend, de grote commerciële doorbraak voor de Schotse band. Ik weet niet of het door dit succes kwam, maar de sound van de Simple Minds was hiermee definitief veranderd.

Op 33 Katrina & the Waves met een lied dat zo vrolijk en optimistisch is, dat het tegen het manische aan zit. Ik vond het toen niet echt sterk, en hoef het nu ook niet meer te horen.

Op 35 ABC met één van hun minder bekende singles, maar nog altijd met de vertrouwde sound.

En op 36 een heel apart lied van Sarah Brightman en koorknaap Paul Miles-Kingston, Pie Jésu, geschreven door Andrew Lloyd Webber. Geen popmuziek, wel erg mooi, voor wie ervan houdt .

Is 4 een cover van 3
