The unforgettable fire is dan wel van nummer 1 af, maar blijft nog wel even op 2 staan. Zo wordt het nog een van de grootste hits ooit in mijn top 40...

Op 20 als hoogste David Bowie met Lovin' the alien. De Bowie van de jaren 80 wordt vaak als 'minder' gezien, maar die mening deel ik niet. Lovin' the alien is een ijzersterk nummer, vanuit de puntjes van zijn tenen gezongen, en behoort tot de beste van zijn repertoire.

Op 25 een nieuw geluid aan het firmament, Propaganda, uit Duitsland (waar dit soort bands tot dusverre amper te vinden waren). Claudia Brücken zingt onderkoeld, de toetsen vormen een machtige melodie en producer Trevor Horne laat het geluid nog voller klinken.

Op 27 The Dutch met een opvolger voor This is welfare, America. Opnieuw klinkt de band on-Nederlands (goed); ik hoor wel invloeden van The Blue Nile. Omdat de song op Youtube lastig te vinden is, hier een link: The Dutch - America - YouTube

Op 31 een Surinaams feestnummer: Wasmasjien van Trafassi. Wel een vreemde eend in de bijt, maar erg swingend en vrolijk, en voor een keertje niks mis mee. Wel zakt hij volgende week alweer...

Op 33 Dancin' van Chris Isaac. Merkwaardig is dat deze zelfde single bij andere users in het hittopic van 1991 binnenkomt. Meestal loop ik een paar weken achter, maar dit keer ben ik zes jaar eerder. Het is overigens een prima singer-songwriterplaat, bijna overdreven emotioneel gezongen.

Op 34 de synthpoppioniers OMD, die inmiddels in een geoliede hitmachine zijn veranderd. Het is ze gegund, en So in love is nog altijd prettig luistervoer.

He he eindelijk eens een top 9 die me goed bevalt. Alle 9 goed, al had U2 voor mij niet zo gehoeven.

1. Orchestral Manœuvres In The Dark - So In Love
OMD is definitief een hitmachine geworden maar het is wel een prima single die prettig in het gehoor ligt met vlekkeloze productie.
Cijfer: 8,5

19. David Bowie - Loving The Alien
Zeker niet zijn beste single - de kille productie heeft daar mee te maken - en het werd niet zo'n grote hit als zijn vorige maar biedt - zeker vocaal - genoeg kwaliteit.
Cijfer: 7

25. The Cool Notes - Spend The Night
Een te doorsnee funk/dancenummer die tussen de plooien is gevallen en haar stem klinkt te dichtgeknepen.
Cijfer: 4

26. Animotion - Obsession
Weer een nummer dat alleen die tijd een hit kon worden. Doet mij sterk denken aan Human League met dik aangezette synths.
Cijfer: 5

27. The Shorts - Door De Bocht
The Shorts gaan meer de Nederpoptoer maar vocaal klinkt het mager en de productie is ook hier erg tijdsgebonden.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Dennie Christian - Als De Zon
Banale en nietszeggende schlager, dit is goed om één keer te horen en dan nooit meer.
Cijfer: 2,5

29. Huey Lewis and The News - If This Is It
Huey Lewis and The News hoorde die tijd ook tot de verguisde AOR maar komt nog geloofwaardig over door de scheut blues die ze erin verwerken en dat heeft ook met de zang te maken. Een tikkeltje glad maar verder OK.

30. Barrelhouse - The Sudden Stop
Niet erg bijzondere ballad die wat te lang duurt maar de sterke zang is wel een groot pluspunt en het is tenminste natuurlijk geproduceerd.

Opnieuw blijft de hele top 4 staan, en het gemiddeld aantal weken wordt zo ook steeds hoger. Gelukkig stijgen de volgende 5 platen, dus het zal nog wel goed komen. Duel van Propaganda ontpopt zich tot een kanshebber voor de nummer 1-positie.

Op 22 komt die heerlijke plaat van New Order binnen, The perfect kiss, die in talloze versies onder de aandacht werd gebracht. Het moordend strakke van Blue Monday ontbreekt hier, op The perfect kiss kan echt heel goed geswingd worden, vooral als naar het einde toe steeds meer lagen op elkaar gestapeld worden en je armen en benen te kort komt om aan al deze prikkels uitdrukking te geven. Wat mij destijds verbaasde, was dat het het vaak op de radio gedraaid werd, maar toch geen hit werd (wel hoog in de tipparade), terwijl het naar mijn smaak veel 'makkelijker' klonk dan Blue Monday (dat wel een grote hit werd, en later nog een keer). Maakt niet uit, ze zijn allebei genieten!

Op 23 de plaat waarmee Chris Rea zich vestigde als superster (na in 1978 al een aardig hitje gescoord te hebben met Fool if you think it's over). De song begint met een opvallend uitgebreid intro op akoestische gitaar, maar als de beat en de melodie inzet, wordt duidelijk dat we (alweer) een klassieker te pakken hebben. De schorre stem van Chris Rea doet iedereen huismoeder smelten (en vast ook menige huisvader); de tekst is overigens gericht aan zijn dochtertje.

Op 32 komt Howard Jones opnieuw binnen met Look mama, maar ook zijn tweede poging zet geen zoden aan de dijk.

Op 34 een echte discohit in mijn top 40, iets wat in de loop der jaren steeds minder vaak gebeurt, terwijl het eind jaren 70 schering en inslag was. Aan de ene kant is Feel so real een beetje eentonig, aan de andere kant ook heeft het ook wat gelukzaligs.

Op 36 een vergeten song van een vergeten Nederlandse bluesband, The sudden stop van Barrelhouse. Een lang gerekte ballad met nogal wat clichélijnen (hoor ik daar Out here on my own?), maar in ieder geval met verve gebracht.

En als laatste haalt Prince ook bij mij de top 40, op 38, met Paisley Park. Een vrij ingehouden song, in vergelijking met zijn andere wat extatischer werk, en daardoor ook minder opvallend. Deze 38e plek zal meteen ook de hoogste blijken te zijn...

Ook in de 2e week handhaaft Depeche Mode zich met gemak op de 1e plaats overigens dat het in geen één lijst op nummer 1 te vinden is, de concurrentie heeft voorlopig het nakijken en volgt op gepaste afstand.

Duran Duran met A View To A Kill, de soundtrack uit de gelijknamige Bondfilm is de hoogste binnenkomer op nummer 15, de verrassende nummer 1 bij vigil in zijn lijst Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark met So in Love komt ook binnen in de lijst en waar New Order met The Perfect Kiss het aantal nieuwelingen afsluit.

The Smiths staan inmiddels alweer 11 weken genoteerd met The Headmaster Ritual een record tot nu toe.

Wellicht mijn grootste guilty pleasure van dat jaar, dit klinkt zomers en grappig met een belangrijke rol voor de percussie. Laat maar lekker draaien ...

De eerste solosingle van Sting, het werd niet zo'n grote hit en dat was toch wel onterecht. Anders dan The Police - een tikkeltje jazzy - maar meer dan behoorlijke zang en tekst en ook de uitstekende productie valt hier op.

25. Madonna - Crazy For You
Haar bakvisstemmetje is nog niet optimaal en deze ballad is wat standaard maar Madonna was geleidelijk naar de top aan het groeien en uiteindelijk is dat in zijn geheel geen slecht nummer.

27. Video Kids - Do The Rap
Meer een gimmick dan een song, de eerste keer kan je het misschien nog leuk vinden maar dan is de lol er snel vanaf.

Softrock dat lijkt voort te kabbelen maar wel erg boeit door de sfeer en tekst. Ook subliem gearrangeerd waarbij de synthesizer het nummer draagt.

Vanaf het begin al een groot bewonderaar geweest van de Fine Young Cannibals. Eeuwig zonde dat die gasten uiteindelijk niet meer door een deur konden, want ze hebben twee sterke albums achtergelaten. Niet alleen de hits zijn fraai, ook eigenlijk vrijwel alle overige albumtracks. Hun debuutsingle in de vorm van Johnny Come Home behoort wat mij betreft nog steeds tot de hoogtepunten van de 80's.

Ik geniet inmiddels al een aantal jaren van Daryl Hall's webcast Live From Daryl's House (begonnen in 2007), waarin een zeer divers scala aan artiesten bij hem thuis is geweest om op te treden. Samen met zijn fantastische bandleden worden er grootse vertolkingen van diverse H&O tracks ten tonele gebracht, maar ook die van de gastartiesten. Heb nu toch maar besloten om al het H&O werk eens nader onder de loep te nemen. Voor dit topic kwam ik ineens het voor mij onbekende Possession Obsession tegen. Het is geen toptrack, maar het heeft die heerlijke sfeer die zo kenmerkend is voor het werk van Daryl en John. Genieten van dit laidback nummer.

Edit: Waaaaat? Zijn Daryl Hall en John Oates al respectievelijk 69!!! en 67!!!! Had ze eigenlijk zeker 10 jaar jonger geschat. Oei wat vliegt de tijd.

Last but not least komen de dames van Sister Sledge binnen met Frankie. Toch altijd wel een favorietje van me geweest, maar je moet het ook weer niet te vaak horen.
