Voor de rest is het best een wat voortkabbelend weekje geworden, U2 blijft voorlopig heer en meester al zet Rick Springfield dapper de achtervolging in.
Simply Red komt de Top 3 binnen en stijgen Marillion en A-Ha goed door.

De tijd lijkt wel voorbij te vliegen.....

Prima nieuwe singles en vooral van de brandnieuwe Moore/Lynott track werd ik weer helemaal warm van binnen.
Maar geen kwaad woord over China Crisis en Robert Plant. Voor de laatste even gekozen voor de Europese release. In de VS begonnen ze met Little by Little, in Europa werd Pink & Black de eerste single. Wonderlijke gedachtegangen maar vermoedelijk zal er wel een strategie achter zitten.

En laat ik vooral Snowy White niet vergeten. De man acteert altijd maar een beetje in de schaduwen van het succes maar verdient eigenlijk beter. Prima gitarist.

Ook hier komen Gary Moore & Phil Lynott vrij hoog binnen, het nummer staat dan ook nog steeds als een huis, het tempo zit er goed in en tijd om adem te halen is er amper totdat het "verlossende" OUT valt

John Hiatt is ook al zo'n fraaie binnenkomer met Living A Little, Laughing A Little dat origineel van de Spinners is, maar Hiatt maakt er wat mij betreft een nog mooiere versie van

Duran Duran is natuurlijk bekend terrein met de titeltrack van de nieuwe Bond film en ik heb in tegenstelling tot musician gekozen voor de Amerikaanse release van Plant, om de simpele reden dat Little By Little mij beter bevalt.

Tipparade: week 19 van 1985.

1. Bobbysocks! - Let It Swing
Het winnende nummer op het Eurovisiesongfestival. Klinkt erg vrolijk en het swingt inderdaad maar ze hebben de mosterd duidelijk gehaald bij Waterloo van Abba. Nadien niets meer van hen gehoord.
Cijfer: 6,5

9. Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
Hun bijdrage voor een James Bond-film, de plastic productie met die neppe blazers is een minpunt al heeft het verder wel een sterk en aanstekelijk refrein.
Cijfer: 6

12. Paul Hardcastle - 19
Een opvallend anti-oorlogsnummer waarbij de sequencers en koortjes doeltreffend zijn, klinkt niet gedateerd en nog steeds actueel.
Cijfer: 8

17. The Star Sisters - Danger
Hun retrosound hebben ze ingeruild voor een stevige en moderne beat maar het nummer zelf is te doorsnee om hoge ogen te gooien.
Cijfer: 5

24. Rose Royce - Love Me Right Now
Banale en nietszeggende dance waarbij de zang geforceerd overkomt, geef mij maar hun vroegere hits als Car Wash en Wishing on a Star.
Cijfer: 3,5

25. RAH Band - Clouds Across The Moon
Een eendagsvlieg maar geen onaardig en vrij apart nummer met leuke zij het wat gedateerde bliepjes en effecten.
Cijfer: 7

26. Steve Arrington - Feel So Real
Dit zal het op de dansvloer wellicht nog steeds goed doen. Funky dance die echter wat mechanisch aandoet door de productie.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Gerard Joling - Love Is In Your Eyes
Zijn eerste hit en ik moet toegeven dat hij een mooie stem heeft. Weliswaar erg glad maar die doo-wop-invloeden en die intro en einde maken het voor mij een leuk nummer, veel beter dat wat hij later zou brengen.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. China Crisis - King In A Catholic Style
Waarom deze band het nooit ver heeft geschopt is mij een raadsel, dit vind ik prima 80's-pop. Fris, aanstekelijk, intelligent met sublieme arrangementen waarbij de drums hier ook goed klinken.
Cijfer: 8,5

29. Glenn Frey - The Heat Is On
Werd een hit dankzij de film Bervely Hills Cop waar dit nummer in voorkomt. Haalt uiteraard niet het peil van de Eagles-hits maar het is wel een vrolijk nummer waarbij die sax blijft hangen.
Cijfer: 7

30. Steve Allen - Letter From My Heart
Dit nummer blijft ook overeind door de sterke melodie en ditmaal de fijne, luchtige 80's-productie en ritme.
Cijfer: 7,5

Nu alweer zeven week op 1, The unforgettable fire, maar de Simple Minds dringen steeds verder aan.

Op 23 weer zo'n aanstekelijke single van China Crisis, met een aparte titel en een jachtig sfeertje. Waarom werden dit geen hits? Misschien dat de zang te weinig power had, verder kan ik niets bedenken.

Op 30 richt Supertramp zich nog eenmaal op om de klasse van de jaren 70 te evenaren (zelfs zonder Roger Hodgson). Cannonball is weer een lekker kwaad gezongen uitbarsting van boosheid en verwijt, en de muziek gaat mee. Extra knap is dat het niet de sound van de oude Supertramp navolgt, maar wel de oude kwaliteit in een jaren 80-jasje.

Op 34 een fijne one-hit-wonder, The Rah Band met Clouds across the moon. Het SF-thema zit niet zozeer in de gezongen tekst, maar wel in de bijgeluidjes en het mini-hoorspelletje met de man van de telefooncentrale. De clip is lekker over de top vormgegeven.

Op 35 is de Style Council ook in optima forma (ja, het is een uitstekende week qua binnenkomers); Paul Weller zingt met een felheid die aan de dagen van The Jam doet denken, maar het heeft wel de Style Council-sixties-soul-retro-sound die de band kenmerkt. Wel opvallend hoe vaak de beeldspraak van de vallende muren van Jericho in popsongs terugkeert.

Op 36 dan toch iets onbekends en vergetens: Ton Scherpenzeel (van Kayak) met een soloplaat, gezongen door Chris Rainbow. Je verwacht iets groots, maar het is een simpel liedje met een wat lelijke eighties-productie, en begrijpelijk dat je het nergens meer hoort.

Nog even nagefeest omdat de superboeruhhh Ajax het kampioenschap niet hebben bezorgd. Sorry Ajax fans hier, maar dat was toch wel mooi en nagelbijtend spannend.

Fraaie binnenkomer van een van mijn favoriete bandjes van dat moment, de familie Pearson a.k.a. Five Star a.k.a. 5 Star. Hun succesjaar 1986 moet dan nog komen, maar All Fall Down is al een sterke aankondiging.
Verder prachtige aanwinsten in de lijst van Paul Hardcastle, de Commodores, zaten toen voor mij in een interessante (lees: net ontdekte) periode en Time Bandits met een van hun diverse mooie singles. Helaas heb ik daar geen normale versie van gevonden.

Uiteraard weer wat nieuwe binnenkomertjes deze week en waar Supertramp like a Cannonball binnenkomt knallen op nummer 5.

The Cult met She Sells Sanctuary was volgens mij de "doorbraak" hier in Nederland voor deze band?

Voor de rest dat leuke en vooral luchtige Frankie van Sister Sledge, de mooie nieuwe single van Billy Ocean en een alleraardigst nummer van de Time Bandits dat hier ==> Time Bandits: Endless Road. on Vimeo wel te beluisteren is.

Best een goed nummer ook, maar de ware klik ermee ontbreekt wel.
Maar had ook zomaar wel binnen kunnen komen.
Ik ben dan weer verrast dat Kronenburg Park er bij jou niet in staat.

Ook in 1985 rond halverwege mei veel nieuwe & goede muziek. Wat te denken van de laatste single van David Bowie van zijn album Tonight.

Een nogal bekritiseert album eerlijk gezegd en de eerder daarvan afgehaalde nummers Blue Jean en Tonight waren ook matigjes onthaald. Toen kwam This is not America met Pat Metheney als geheel nieuwe single en moest men na dit klaterende succes met een opvolger komen. Vreemd genoeg vond men toen nog Loving the Alien, een track dat eigenlijk eerder de kar van Tonight had kunnen en moeten trekken.

En hoe iemand zoveel fantastische tracks in een kort tijdsbestek (en dan heb ik het over Prince in de jaren 80) kan uitbrengen. Raspberry Beret (RB) is nog flink aan het stijgen en hopla daar komt het volgende groeibriljantje al aan...Paisley Park (PP). RB blijft voor mij zijn ultieme track, maar PP zit daar niet ver achter.

Jim Diamond's Remember I Love You had ik nog nooit eerder van gehoord. Maar wat een mooie ontdekking is me dat. Volgens de Engelse Wiki zou dit track 6 van zijn debuutalbum moeten zijn. Maar hier op MuMe komt die track niet op het album voor, maar er staan dan wel weer twee andere nummers vermeld (Impossible Dream en Caledonia), die op Wiki dan weer niet staan. Ook hier zullen dan wel meer versies van rondzwerven.

Verder nog mooie en wel bekende nummers van Scritti Politti met een uit duizenden herkenbare sound en Duran Duran.

Boy Meets Girl heb ik erin gegooid omdat hun 1988 hit Waiting for a Star to Fall voor mij nog steeds een van de lekkerste tracks van de jaren 80 is (kan het ook niet helpen). Heerlijke Amerikaanse productie/bombast/aanstellerij. Heeft ook met een super schoolperiode te maken. Dat waren nog eens tijden. Oh Girl kende ik nog niet en is op zich prima, niet heel bijzonder verder.

1. Rick Springfield - Celebrate Youth
Vreselijke productie (syndrums zijn de pest van vele jaren '80-platen) en daarnaast een nietszeggend nummer dat je al snel vergeten bent niettegenstaande de boodschap.

22. Normaal - Kom D'r Bi-j
Normaal heeft wel veel hits gescoord. Dit neigt meer naar een kermisdeuntje maar het is in zijn geheel best vermakelijk en net niet te plat.

25. Billy Ocean - Suddenly
Billy Ocean heeft duidelijk naar Hello van Lionel Ritchie geluisterd toen hij dit nummer opnam. Gladde ballad maar goede stem.

26. Glenda Peters - Since You Came Into My Life
Vrij slap en vervelend dance-nummer dat niet swingt of aanspreekt, nu ook gedateerd door de productie.

27. Prince and The Revolution - Paisley Park
Geen juiste clip op You-Tube maar wel een prima song waarin Prince een beetje een andere richting insloeg met licht psychedelisch tintje. Werd vreemd genoeg (en onterecht) geen hit hoewel aanstekelijk genoeg.

28. Time Bandits - Endless Road (And I Want You To Know My Love)
Ook hier geen juiste clip. Een gladde en tijdsgebonden productie waarbij de synths te overheersend zijn maar het refrein en de stem zijn wel aanstekelijk.

29. Supertramp - Cannonball
Zonder Roger Hodson sloeg Supertramp een andere richting in: meer jazzy en ritmisch op een dance-ritme met blazers maar met nodige spanning en afwisseling. Toch een wat onderschatte single.

30. Chris Isaak - Dancin'
De Roy Orbison van de jaren '80, fraaie melancholieke popsong met indringende stem en door de natuurlijke productie heeft dit nummer beter de tand des tijds doorstaan dan sommige vernoemde nummers deze week.

Na 7 weken moet U2 dan toch een plaatsje wijken voor eeuwige (eighties)concurrent Simple Minds. Verder zien we drie erg snelle stijgers; Supertramp 19 plaatsen en The Rah Band zelfs 22 plaatsen.

Op 21 komt top 40 nummer 1-hit 19 van Paul Hardcastle, een (wat verlate) aanklacht tegen de Vietnamoorlog, en dan met name tegen de jonge leeftijd (en de onwetendheid) van de Amerikaanse soldaat. Het blijft wel vreemd om zo'n indringende plaat met vaak schokkende teksten gecombineerd te zien met een erg stevige dancebeat. Gelukkig komt er nog een refrein van een dameskoortje voorbij, anders was het te veel een allegarig samenraapsel van fragmenten.

Op 23 een prima single van Depeche Mode, Shake the disease, die opvalt vanwege de mooie melodie (wat voor DM wel ongebruikelijk is). In mijn top 40 wordt het dan ook een van hun grootste hits.

Op 26 een James Bond-klassieker van jewelste; Duran Duran met A view to a kill. Het is de perfecte combinatie van de bekende Bond-soundtrack sound en een puntgave popsong van een van de hotste bands van het moment. Ik lees ook wel eens dat deze themesong minder gewaardeerd wordt, waarschijnlijk vanwege de beroemde/beruchte eighties-productie, maar in dit geval vind ik het wel geslaagd, en los daarvan is het gewoon een ijzersterk nummer.

Op 38 een vriendelijk Italo-disconummer van Silver Pozzoli, dat inderdaad wel een ritmische klap van Dance hall days van Wang Chung heeft meegekregen. Maar storen doet het niet, het is prettig swingen op deze muziek.

Op 39 gaat Bryan Ferry nog verder in op zijn rol van smoothe crooner; supergelikt en goed gedaan, maar ik hoor duizend maal liever de oude Roxy Music...

Na 4 weken op nummer 1 te hebben gestaan moet U2 het veld ruimen voor A-Ha met Take On Me,
A-Ha sprokkelt zo zijn punten bij elkaar uit de diverse lijsten en is overigens in geen één lijst op nummer 1 te vinden, maar dus wel in de weeklijst.

Depeche Mode rukt op naar de 2e plaats en lijkt de grootste concurrent te worden voor A-Ha en waar Propaganda en Prince de Top 10 binnenvallen.

Eurythmics met Would I Lie To You? is de hoogste nieuweling op nummer 14 en is de nummer 1 bij musician in zijn lijst, Gary Moore & Phil Lynott, For Against en Supertramp zijn de overige binnenkomers.

Gezien de goede resultaten in de weeklijst zijn er meerdere mensen die dit wel een goed nummer vinden. Ach de wekelijkse opmerkingen over gedateerde jaren '80 muziek kan ik ook wel dromen

Mondjesmaat zie je inmiddels de clips of eigenlijk meer een plaatje bij muziek. op youtube van Prince verschijnen.
Die van Paisley Park is drie weken geleden op youtube gezet. Prince heeft er zich met hand en tand tegen verzet maar wie moet het nog voor hem doen, na zijn overlijden en gebrek aan erfgenamen? En waarom zouden fans ook geen muziek van hem op youtube mogen plaatsen.

Het is mooi, dat een jongere generatie nu ook via deze weg kennis met zijn muziek kan maken. Ik laat Paisley Park nog een beetje geduldig wachten op het nog voortdurende succes van Raspberry Peret.

En dan is er het eerste solowerk van Sting. The Police was "opgedoekt" en we zaten nog in shock te wachten met de vraag "wat nu".
Maar ik vond de zet van Sting, deze single en het bijbehorende album The Dream of the Blue Turtles briljant. Pop, rock en jazz, opgenomen met de beste jazz sessie muzikanten ter wereld is het voor mij één van de beste albums van het jaar.
