Eerst even wat rectificeren ..... A-Ha had vorige week geen 27 punten maar 42, ik had namelijk een telling gemist en daarmee stond A-Ha op plaats 10 en niet op 17 maar de punten zijn inmiddels hersteld voor Take On Me.

Terug naar de actualiteit waar we deze week 3 nieuwelingen mogen begroeten en zijn de Fine Young Cannibals met Johnny Come Home de hoogste op nummer 12, You Trip Me Up van The Jesus And Mary Chain met die heerlijke kettingzaag op de achtergrond komt binnen op 18 en tot slot Italo in de lijst van Silver Pozzoli met Around My Dream.

Ja, grijsgedraaid of niet, associaties met het verschrikkelijke MTV of alleen vanwege het feit dat het Dire Straits betreffen, voor mij staat het nummer Money for Nothing buiten kijf.

En dan nog niet eens zozeer de wat flauwe versie van het album, dat wel lang duurt maar waarbij Sting zo'n beetje is weggecijferd, maar een 12" versie die ik zelf destijds ooit kocht. Het is krachtiger, er is hier wel volop ruimte voor de zang van Sting, die ik hoger wil aanslaan dan Knopfler.

Ik begrijp dat de 12" versie een tijdje "zoek" is geweest, maar inmiddels gewoon op youtube te vinden.

Redelijke solosingle van Styx-zanger (van deze band moet ik nog eens opnieuw een album beluisteren), weliswaar glad maar de prima, krachtige zang maakt veel goed.

14. George Baker Selection - Santa Lucia By Night
In de jaren '80 klinkt George Baker Selection steeds meer als BZN. Zomers en vrolijk, dat wel maar ook erg voorspelbaar.

25. Georgie Davis - Blackstar
Klinkt als een Stevie Wonder-kloon maar minder toonvast. De gladde productie en het gebruik van syndrums doen het nummer geen goed.

26. Phil Fearon and Galaxy - You Don't Need A Reason
Ik kan geen reden vinden waarom ik een hoog cijfer moet geven. Matige en vlakke song dat te weinig uitstraalt met eentonig drumwerk.

Your Love was nog een sterke hit in 1981, dit kan er niet aan tippen, te vlak en te mechanisch waarbij de synths te overheersend zijn..

Dit nummer daarentegen blijft fris klinken: zeer sterk ritme, aparte soulvolle zang en die gitaar en dat tikkeltje jazz maakt het helemaal af.

Natuurlijk niet op You-Tube maar iedereen kent dit nummer wel. Erg aanstekelijk funky ritme en een refrein die blijft hangen, avontuurlijke, wat psychedelische arrangementen. Ook voor Prince een ...

Elke week zowel sterke, tijdloze nummers als wegwerpmateriaal en dit behoort tot de tweede categorie. Het is enigszins aanstekelijk maar ook vrij banaal en te glad en haar zang is ook niet geweldig.

Top 40 nummer 470, dat was toen precies 9 jaar, en aangezien ik de lijst nog steeds maak, is het nu dus 40 jaar wekelijks een top 20 of top 40 maken . (Met wat voorlopers erbij is het nu ongeveer 41 jaar.)

En dat vieren we deze week met zeven entry's. Op 24 komt Bruce Springsteen met zijn tweede single binnen (I'm on fire staat al in de top 10). Born in the USA, het bekende titelnummer van zijn meest succesvolle album, klinkt als een patriottisch anthem, maar is juist een aanklacht tegen de Amerikaanse maatschappij, met de nadruk op de oorlog in Vietnam, waar zoveel jonge mannen hun leven lieten. Je moet wel bestand zijn tegen de schreeuwerige zang, maar dan heb je een krachtig nummer, met aan het eind ook nog wat on-Springsteen-iaanse overdonderende effecten.

Op 31 Go West, zonder meer een van de meest eighties-klinkende bands (of dat een compliment is, laat ik aan de lezer over). Call me is niet zo sterk als de bekendere hits, het gaat het ene oor in en het andere oor uit.

Op 32 een liedje dat ik toen erg mooi vond, en nog steeds, hoewel het helaas door de smaakmafia meestal verguisd wordt. Het betreft Blackstar van debutant Georgie Davis. Deze Nederlander (Kees Rietveld geheten) deed mee aan de Soundmixshow met een imitatie van Stevie Wonder, en mocht vervolgens een hele Stars on Stevie vol zingen, wat een grote top 10 hit werd. Blackstar is een eigentijds en lief liedje, met een Middeleeuwse fantasytekst, ik vermoed een beetje in de stijl van Neverending story.

Op 33 de Oostenrijker Falco, geproduceerd door ons Nederlandse Bolland en Bolland, die hiermee een gigantische internationale hit scoorden, tot in de UK aan toe. Productioneel is het ook erg goed gedaan, met stemeffecten en een stevige beat, maar als song stelt het niet zo veel voor. Vanwege de bombast toch wel leuk om eens terug te horen.

Op 34 Phil Collins met een minder grote hit, Don't lose my number, waarin hij gedrevener zingt dan in zijn wat zeikerige ballads, maar het topniveau van In the air tonight haalt hij bij lange na niet; een tussenniveau dus.

Op 36 The Korgis, die 5 jaar terug doorbraken met met het breekbare Everybody's gotta learn sometimes, en het nu doodleuk proberen met een swingend latin-achtig deuntje. Ze slagen er maar half in, en dit hoor je ook niet meer op de radio.

Op 37 Feargal Sharkey met Loving you, dat ik alweer vergeten was, maar het klinkt verrassend goed. Op dit moment is Feargal nog alleen maar de zanger van The Undertones, A good heart moet nog komen. Het begint wat misleidend met een Aurora - Nova -achtig toetsenlijntje, maar ontwikkelt zich dan tot een meeslepende ballad met onverwachte productie-effecten.

Na 5 weken het heft in handen te hebben gehad moet Depeche Mode deze week plaats maken voor Duran Duran met A View To A Kill die de nummer 1 positie overneemt.

Het is best wel een "opvallend" weekje, want zo verdwenen Paul Hardcastle en David Bowie plotsklaps uit de lijst, terwijl die vorige week nog op nummer 6 en 9 te vinden waren, boekt Marillion ineens weer winst omdat deze single nu door de lijst van ranboy heen raast en duikelt Propaganda hard naar beneden.

Tears For Fears komt binnen knallen op nummer 5 en het is overigens alweer een tijdje geleden dat een single zo hoog binnen kwam in de lijst.
The Moffs en The Damned complementeren de overige nieuwkomers deze week.

En dit is de tussenstand als het gaat om de definitieve jaarlijst van 1985, te beginnen met het halfjaar overzicht.

U2 met The Unforgettable Fire is de "voorlopige" nummer 1 in de lijst, een nummer dat vooral werd gedragen door de zeg maar 50+ generatie (50tracks, musician, ranboy en ik) bij al deze deelnemers kwam deze single tot de nummer 1 positie, de overige lijstjesmakers leken minder enthousiast

Ben je net pas vijf dagen 50, word je al in de 50+ generatie ingedeeld ...

Een prachtig stilleven. Mooi geproduceerd, sterk gemusiceerd. Smaakvol. Alleen jammer dat Nico niet kan zingen. Maar voor het overige: chapeau voor My funny Valtentine!

Idol & The Smiths gingen beiden op voor de prijs van de week. Maar Morrissey cum suis winnen met één van de betere nummers van Meat is Murder op punten.

Weergaloos nummer, maar niet in die versie. Geef mij dan maar die van Britain's Got Talent deelneemster Alice Fredenham. Voor mij het allerbeste wat er ooit uit die shows is voortgekomen. Dit jaar komt ze dan eindelijk met haar debuutalbum. Ben benieuwd. My kind a music. Kippenvel, nog steeds.

My Funny Valentine ---> begint zo rond 1:30.

Het nummer gaat juist over de onvolkomenheden van de 'funny Valentine'. Dat het dan niet perfect gezongen wordt draagt juist bij aan de charme vind ik, als ook dat het opgenomen is in Nico's (minder mooie) laatste jaren.
De kritiek verbaast me dan ook, hoewel aan de andere kant ook weer niet

Ja die Fredenham versie ken ik..zij was ooit totaal afgeserveerd en in een ander programma id da bomb..
Maar dat is gewoon de stem van Nico..jullie kennen vast wel het duet met Marc Almond..zo'n beetje het laatste wat ze deed voor haar tragische ongeval.

Ja, het is natuurlijk tragisch genoeg.

Maar dat neemt niet weg, dat de zang een onvoldoende oplevert en dan laat ik de oorzaken daarvan maar buiten beschouwing.
Desondanks vind ik het vanwege de omlijsting toch een verder prima song.

Heeft wel een re-release gekregen in 1985 maar in 1983 stond deze overal in de charts. Heeft in de zomer van 2014 (dus zomer '83) ook de nodige aandacht gehad van leden alhier

Laat dat nou precies de bedoeling geweest zijn

Tja, laatst When Love Breaks Down was ook al van 1984 en White Wedding dateert zelfs al van 1982. Zo zijn er elke week wel talrijke voorbeelden te vinden.
Dit nummer werd een van de grote hits in de zomer van 1985 en ik ken hem ook van die zomer. Ik heb hem nog niet gespeeld, dus speel ik hem nu
