When Love Breaks Down uit '84 is natuurlijk wel een andere versie, daar was nog geen Dolby aan te pas gekomen.

Klopt, maar dat zien we nu ook bij Pet Shop Boys. In dergelijke gevallen neem ik hem een jaar later (of zelfs minder wat PF betreft) niet nog eens op.

Elke week talrijke voorbeelden nog wel, je kan ook overdrijven

In twee zinnetjes heel wat te overdenken!
White wedding van Billy Idol laat ik binnenkomen, omdat het een re-issue was in de VS. In 1982 werd het bij mij geen hit.
Een belangrijk criterium omdat ik zelf niet zo dol ben op een herhaling van een nummer in de hitlijst, een paar jaar nadat het voor het eerst is verschenen.

Maar als je het toen hebt gemist (het werd ook nergens een hit) voelt het heel anders aan en wil je er toch aan beginnen.
Een nog moeilijker uitgangspunt is, hoe je zelf een nummer in een bepaalde tijd hebt ervaren, als het een heruitgave blijkt te zijn. Dan hoort de song voor je gevoel in een bepaalde tijd echt thuis, terwijl het eerder al een (grote) hit is geweest.

Zo vind/vond ik altijd Give up your guns van The Buoys helemaal thuis horen in 1979 (bleek al een grote hit in 1972).
Music van John Miles ervaar ik volledig als 1976, de heruitgave in 1982 doet mij dan weer niks.

Dus er zit ook een heel belangrijk eigen gevoel bij dat maar moeilijk aan anderen is uit te leggen.

Last but not least zitten we hier met alles wat ons ter beschikking staat uit te vogelen wat de releasedatum van een nummer precies geweest is. Om op basis daarvan je lijst te kunnen maken.

Maar het is vrijwel nooit goed: veel songs staan voor je gevoel schots en scheef door elkaar in tijd. Het komt ook eigenlijk nimmer overeen met hoe het chronologisch in de Top 40 heeft gestaan.

Eens, als enige regel hou ik voor mezelf aan dat ik een song slechts EEN keer laat meespelen, en verder streef ik er zoveel mogelijk na om in de pas te lopen met mijn mede-lijstenmakers.
Maar helaas lukt dat niet altijd

Ik pak altijd de lijsten (Top 40, Billboard, UK Charts) van een bepaalde week samen, zet de leuke nummers in Excel en ga dan kijken welke tracks binnen mogen komen. Probleem zijn vaak de nummers die pas veel later binnenkomen in de andere lijsten en dan moet ik behoorlijk graven of die al niet eerder in m'n lijst zijn voor gekomen. Heb nooit zo'n zin om terug te kijken.

In de top 10 zit weinig beweging; alleen Kayleigh schiet omhoog van 10 naar 4. Volgende week al op 1?

Vier binnenkomers die bijzonder laag binnenkomen. Het kan aan het begin van de zomertijd liggen, dan loopt het aantal nieuwe songs altijd wat terug. Op 35 de hoogste, een nummer 1 hit voor Harold Faltermeyer, met Axel F, het thema van Beverly Hills Cop (later nog verkracht door Crazy Frog, welke versie zeer recent door het MuMe-publiek werd verkozen tot slechtste top 40 hit van de laatste 20 jaar). Axel F is een intrumentaal synthesizerdeuntje, niet bepaald spectaculair te noemen, maar kennelijk toch erg aanstekelijk. Persoonlijk vind ik het niet zo bijzonder en begrijp ik de grote status ervan niet echt.

Op 36 weer een typische Alison Moyet-plaat, een mid-tempoballad waarop zij vocaal weer alles uit de kast kan halen, alles in een typische eighties productie.

Op 37 een vergeten singletje van Neerlands trots Social Security, ditmaal niet met een vlotte rocksong maar een bijna ritmeloze ballad, dat best aardig klinkt, maar toch moeilijk de tand des tijds doorstaan heeft.

En op 39 Greg Kihn (het meest bekend van Jeopardy), met Lucky, een simpel Amerikaanse eighties plaat, waarvan het refrein nog net wat is blijven hangen.

Tipparade: week 27 van 1985.

1. Alison Moyet - All Cried Out
Zij bezit een aparte, expressieve (soul)volle stem en weet die ook goed te benutten. Daarnaast een pakkend nummer waarbij de jaren '80-productie er goed bij past en net niet te glad is.
Cijfer: 8,5

16. Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)
Tina Turner zette ook haar beste beentje voor in deze soundtrack. Prima ingezongen, vooral het sterke refrein en ook hier is de productie degelijk.
Cijfer: 8

25. Anita Meyer - The Story Of A New Born Love
Haar stem is dunner maar past wel in dit nummer dat ook één van haar betere is, mede dankzij de melodie en arrangementen. Het werd echter geen hit ...
Cijfer: 7

26. Vanessa - Bandolero
Weer een zangers en duidelijk de minste van de vier. Het ritme is best aanstekelijk maar verder stelt het nummer te weinig voor.
Cijfer: 4,5

27. Bonnie & José - Zoals Vrienden Doen
Nu twee zangeressen samen, op zich zingen ze niet onaardig maar met deze Abba-cover dat meliger klinkt dan het origineel komt dat niet uit de verf.
Cijfer: 4

28. Five Star - All Fall Down
Een meidengroep met een nummer die wel erg tijdsgebonden klinkt door de productie. Ik hoor daar ook veel in van Jackson-5.
Cijfer: 5

29. BB & Q Band - Genie
Lome en vrij fletse disco/funk dat ook vrij snel gaat vervelen temeer omdat het nodeloos uitgerokken wordt.
Cijfer: 4

30. One Way - Let's Talk
Wederom eigentijdse funk maar merkelijk levendiger dan vorig nummer. Ik hoor hier duidelijk invloeden van Prince in.
Cijfer: 6,5

Moeiteloos schiet Marillion door naar nummer 1.

Op 22 komen The Eurythmics met een opvallend vrolijk en vlot nummer binnen, wat hun een van hun grootste hits oplevert, bij mij en in de NL top 40. There must be an angel kent zeker drie opvallende eigenschappen, de zang van Annie Lennox die klanken verdeelt in verschillende noten ('bli-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-iss'), de mondharmonica van Stevie Wonder en het gospelintermezzo. Toch moet ook gezegd zijn dat irritatie bij dit lied op de loer ligt: niet te vaak draaien!

Op 32 een tweede klassieker, van Tina Turner uit Thunderdome: We don't need another hero (wat ik altijd een aparte titel vond, want het lijkt mij dat die mensen juist wel een held kunnen gebruiken). Geweldig geproduceerd, van klein naar bombastisch, en Tina heeft zonder meer fenomenale stem. Zij is zo'n zangeres die van het materiaal dat haar wordt aangeleverd afhankelijk is; als het goed is, wordt het heel goed; als het slecht is, wordt het heel vervelend...

Op 36 onze eigen Anita Meyer, voor wie de opmerking over Tina Turner ook geldt; aan Anita's stem ligt het in ieder geval nooit. Deze single is snel vergeten maar niet onaardig, met een Keltisch accent waardoor het toch opvalt.

Op 37 Stephen 'Tintin' Duffy met Icing on the cake, waarvan ik me eigenlijk alleen het refrein nog kon herinneren. Er zit een opvallend stevige beat in; dragende dameskoortjes (Stephens stem is niet zo sterk) en natuurlijk een rijke productie.

Tipparade: week 28 van 1985.

1. Howard Jones - Life In One Day
Vrolijke synthipop maar net niet pakkend of memorabel genoeg en na verschillende luisterbeurten kan het vervelen. Wel behoorlijk geproduceerd, helder en niet te overdadig.
Cijfer: 6

23. Dire Straits - Money For Nothing
Puike single van Dire Straits waarin ze de draak steken met MTV met opvallende gitaarsound en synthesizer.
Cijfer: 8,5

24. Aretha Franklin - Freeway Of Love
Er is gelukkig veel ruimte gelaten voor de soul van de enthousiaste Aretha Franklin en het swingt ook nog als een trein. Wellicht haar beste jaren '80-single.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Ten Sharp - Japanese Lovesong
Ten Sharp kennen wij vooral van hun grote hit You (zie week 12 van 1991) maar dit vind ik net iets beter. Fijn ritme, vlotte melodie en degelijke synths die net niet te overheersend zijn.
Cijfer: 7,5

26. Gary Moore & Phil Lynott - Out In The Fields
Op zich een sterke song van twee rockgrootheden die wij kennen van Thin Lizzy. Jammer van de productionele AOR-omlijsting.
Cijfer: 7

27. The Crowd - You'll Never Walk Alone
Deze versie van deze evergreen hoeft niet echt van mij, het kan - wat mij betreft - alvast niet tippen aan die van Gerry & the Pacemakers (waar dat Liverpoolse accent de charme was).
Cijfer: 5

28. Jaki Graham - Round And Around
Jaki Graham had een goede soulzangeres kunnen zijn maar dat wordt hier gefnuikt door de overdadige productie met teveel synths en syndrums en de matige song.
Cijfer: 4

29. Rob De Nijs - Zeg Maar Niets
Hier zijn de synths en syndrums ook teveel aan, ze contrasteren met de warme stem van Rob De Nijs. Bij een soberder productie had deze op zich behoorlijke song beslist aan kracht gewonnen.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Amazulu - Excitable
Zomer en vrolijk huppeldepupnummer, niet erg hoogstaand met name de zang maar in zijn geheel nog aan te horen.

We zien Tears For Fears behoorlijk weglopen van de concurrentie deze week en handhaaft zich zodoende met gemak op de 1e plaats.

Wat ook geen verbazing zal wekken is dat de nieuwe single van The Smiths als hoogste nieuweling binnenkomt en wel op nummer 7, Phil Collins is de andere nieuwe en R.E.M. dankt zijn binnenkomst vooral en zoals verwacht aan johan en luigifort

De langst genoteerde single in de lijst (13 weken) komt in handen van Marillion met Kayleigh.
