Tipparade: week 29 van 1985.

1. Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Natuurlijk fout en erg tijdsgebonden productie maar anderzijds ook grappig (en ik heb dit - toegegeven - nog op single gehad).
Cijfer: 5,5

21. Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)
Eén van hun beste singles omdat de soul van Annie Lennox hier maximaal tot haar recht komt en ook dankzij de mondharmonica van Stevie Wonder.
Cijfer: 9

22. Stephen Tintin Duffy - Icing On The Cake
Geen al te beste zanger - hij kan nauwelijks de toon houden - en het nummer zelf is mij ook te mager en vrij eentonig.
Cijfer: 3

26. Bryan Adams - Heaven
Een powerballad van Bryan Adams, nog niet zo zoet als zijn latere ballads en met de nodige overgave gezongen, toch wel een prima zanger.
Cijfer: 8

27. Dick Van Altena - Dom Diedelie Dom
Wat nietszeggende Nederpop met countrytintje, vrij vlak gezongen. De arrangementen zorgen wel voor een feestelijke sfeer.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Splitsing - Wind En Zeilen
Met de zang en dat accent heb ik het moeilijk maar slecht is het nummer niet, al zijn de arrangementen enigszins gedateerd.
Cijfer: 5

29. The Korgis - True Life Confessions
Van deze band heb ik onlangs een album met hun vroegere werk aangeschaft en dat viel goed mee. Dit nummer is niet onaardig maar klinkt minder fris niettegenstaande de zomerse arrangementen.
Cijfer: 6,5

30. The Beach Boys - Getcha Back
De magie en de zomerse sfeer is er nog enigszins maar de leadvocalen zijn minder dan weleer. Het peil van hun glorieperiode wordt niet gehaald maar dit is nog hun beste nummer uit hun gelijknamig album.

Weinig verschuivingen deze week, en dat komt mede omdat ik toen op vakantie was in Rome (ja, mijn eerste vakantie ooit, na een jaartje studie in Leiden).

Ook de binnenkomers stellen niet veel voor. Op 24 een goede doel-single van The Crowd, een cover van het aloude You'll never walk alone, meest bekend van Gerry & the Pacemakers. Dit voegt er weinig aan toe, maar het blijft natuurlijk een onverwoestbare kraker, dus een notering is snel bereikt.

Op 34 een re-entry van China Crisis in zijn tiende week. Zat wellicht veel in mijn hoofd in Italië. Zou best kunnen, tussen al die katholieke bezienswaardigheden...

En op 39 zowaar Madonna met Crazy for you, een aardige ballad, wat ik altijd beter van haar kon hebben dan de standaard discohits van haar uit die jaren. Maar ook deze zal het niet erg ver schoppen.

De top 3 zit vast en wordt al wat ouder; maar in de zomer gaat alles wat trager.

Op 28 een mooie binnenkomer van Shriekback, hun bekendste single (dacht ik), maar nog niet goed genoeg voor de tipparade. Dreigend gezongen coupletten worden afgewisseld door felle coupletten, alles ondersteund door flink eighties-productiegeweld. Typisch Verrukkelijke 15-werk.

Op 35 Dire Straits met Money for nothing. De argeloze lezer is misschien benieuwd hoeveel succes deze bekendste song van een van de meest verkochte albums aller tijden in NL had. Antwoord: het bleef ergens in de tipparade steken... Erg vreemd, aangezien het intro met de karakteristieke stem van Sting (ook geen kleintje), de spannende drum/synth-opbouw, de komische tekst, de vlotte refreintjes en een van de opvallendste clips uit het vroege MTV-tijdperk toch een superhit zouden moeten hebben mogelijk gemaakt. Ondanks die ene nummer 1 hit (Private investigations) bleef DS kennelijk toch een typische albumband.

Op 36 alweer een vlotte single van Howard Jones, Life in one day.

Op 37 de mooizingerij van Dennis de Young (Styx), die er merkwaardig genoeg een alarmschijf mee scoorde, en dus ook een kleine top 40 hit.

Op 38 een typisch Hollandse single, Wind en zeilen van Splitsing. De tekst zorgt ervoor dat hij nog steeds regelmatig op de radio te horen is; de zang is wel op het randje, maar de Hollandse zomersfeer is wel goed getroffen.

En The unforgettable fire staat in zijn 19e week eindelijk op 40, in mijn lijst een ongehoord aantal weken. En (spoiler alert) het is nog niet zijn laatste week...

Rob wat trok jou in die dagen zo aan bij Georgie Davis? Dat vind ik toch wel een verrassende naam tussen al die grote jaren '80 groepen. Was je zo'n fan van meneer H. Huisman, dat kan natuurlijk ook;-)

Nou, voor The Crowd en Luis Miguel moest ik ook wel even graven, hoor

Wel mooi dat Bowie 30 jaar later dat vergeten nummer van Georgie Davis als inspiratie gebruikte voor zijn laatste album

David was nu eenmaal groot fan

Georgie Davis, the original Blackstar!

Ik was toen 21, dus achter mijn jeugd kan ik mij niet verschuilen .
Blackstar heeft gewoon een erg fijne melodie, stem is ook goed, en vooral die middeleeuwse heldensfeer trok mij toen erg (toen al Tolkien-fan etc). Nu hoor ik wel dat niet elke regel even origineel is, maar het blijft een fijn plaatje. Eigenlijk begrijp ik niet goed waarom de anderen hier nog mee achter blijven.
Luis Miguel begint redelijk standaard, maar naar het eind toe weet de zanger (en de song) er steeds meer een schepje bovenop te gooien qua intensiteit, dat waardeerde ik toen wel.
The Crowd is gewoon hitparadevulling (het was toen ook zomer)

Tipparade: week 30 van 1985.

1. Kid Creole and The Coconuts - Endicott
Lekker funky single met exotische klanken en leuke clip. Niets nieuws onder de zon maar swingen doet het.
Cijfer: 7

15. Madonna - Into The Groove
Haar grootste hit tot dan toe en ook dit swingt lekker. De zang is niet het sterkste punt maar ritmisch en productioneel is het wel geslaagd.
Cijfer: 7

21. Utopia - Mated
Utopia met Todd Rundgren als zanger. Zijn zang is wel goed maar het nummer is zeker voor zijn doen te glad (neigend naar AOR).
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Karen Brooks - Duet with Johnny Cash - I Will Dance With You
Eindelijk nog eens country maar het klinkt wel vrij clichématig en ook aan de gladde kant, ik heb beter gehoord van Johnny Cash.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Kool & The Gang - Cherish
Een zoete ballad waarmee ze richting Lionel Richie inslaan. Slecht is het niet maar ik hoor liever hun funky nummers.
Cijfer: 5

27. Albert West - Munich Night
Het lijkt een BZN-nummer door de arrangementen. Wellicht vakkundig maar erg glad en melig en zijn uitspraak is ook niet alles.
Cijfer: 3,5

28. Pointer Sisters - Dare Me
Dit spreekt mij minder aan dan hun andere hits en daar heeft de typische gladde 80's-productie met een overdaad aan synths en syndrums te maken. De zang is wel een sterk pluspunt wat wij van dit trio mogen verwachten.
Cijfer: 5,5

29. Denise LaSalle - My Tu-Tu
Hier vind ik de synths en syndrums beter bij het nummer passen. Vlot en vrolijk nummer met soulvolle zang, nadien niets meer van haar gehoord.
Cijfer: 7

30. The Cure - In Between Days
De luchtige en vrolijke kant van The Cure maar met steeds herkenbare zang en gitaar en aanstekelijke melodie en ritme. Uiteindelijk het meest tijdloze nummer deze week.
