Ik wil een eind volgen, met de nieuwe Pogues. Het is overigens één van de vele versies van dit nummer. Vele anderen hebben het ook opgenomen, ik herinner mij zo een versie van Rod Stewart en ook één van de Dubliners. Het originele Dirty old town komt al uit 1949 en was van Ewan MacColl. Dat laatste is dan weer internet wijsheid. Maar een fraai nummer is het.

Sting maakte een speciale mix voor de single Love is the seventh wave en kwam daar vervolgens nooit meer op terug. Je moet de single hebben of naar youtube kijken. De versie op The Dream of the blue turtles vind ik iets minder sprankelend.
Overigens kozen de Amerikanen als 2e single Fortress around your heart.

En dan weet, ondanks al deze smaakvolle hits, John Mellencamp zowaar toch nog te winnen met een neuslengte. Niet alles is wellicht even goed. Maar Lonely ol' Night kan er prima mee door.

Tipparade: week 33 van 1985.

1. Propaganda - P: Machinery
Waardige opvolger van Duel al is het iets minder aansprekend. Maar wel meer dan degelijke eigentijdse pop die nu nog behoorlijk fris klinkt.

21. Rick James - Glow
Sinds Superfreak zijn grootste hit maar is toch wat minder aanstekelijk en het duurt mij ook wat te lang om mijn aandacht vast te houden.

22. Mainframe - 5 Minutes
Drukke mechanische pop zonder gevoel dat mij eerder zenuwachtig maakt, gelukkig duurt dat geen 5 minuten.

26. Matt Bianco - More Than I Can Bear
Wat meer synths dan zijn vorige hits maar de jazzy insteek ie er nog steeds al vind ik het minder aansprekend dan bv. Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed.

Geen clip gevonden.

28. Arrow - Long Time
Zomers feestnummer, weinig opzienbarend en na een tijd kan het vervelen maar het kan gerust op een feestje.

Italiaanse pop in eigentijds dance-jasje, ook dit is vrij vergankelijk materiaal (Fotonovella bleef duidelijk meer hangen).

Hun Andrew Sisters-collage van 1983 vind ik nog steeds leuk, dit is echter banale disco waarbij hun stemmen niet tot hun recht komen.

Op 29 Sting met zijn tweede single van zijn debuutalbum. If you love somebody deed het maar matig in de NL top 40, maar deze uiterst relaxte Love is the seventh wave werd een grote top 10 hit. Hij klinkt heerlijk onbekommerd, met een loom reggaeritme; met rock heeft het weinig meer te maken.

Op 30 een ietwat drukke maar toch melodieuze 5 minutes van Mainframe; in de coupletten gooit de zanger er steeds een schepje bovenop, wat ik altijd erg waardeer. In de muziek is wel een doorslag te horen van Two tribes, maar goed, overheersend is dat niet.

Op 35 de debuutsingle van Simply Red, de band van Mick Hucknal. In de beginfase van debuutalbum Picture book klinkt de muziek nog bezield en gepassioneerd, zeker ook op Money's too tight to mention. Dat Mick een geweldige strot heeft, zal vriend en vijand moeten erkennen, en als hij ook een goed liedje te pakken heeft, dan is het genieten.

Op 36 Kool & the Gang met Cherish. Deze band had al een reeks vrolijke discohits op hun naam staan (Get down on it en dergelijke) die mijn top 40 allemaal niet haalden. Maar met deze ballad lukt het ze wel, al is hij wel wat aan de slijmerige kant. Het zou ook hun grootste NL top 40 hit worden.

Op 37 nog een vrolijke niets aan de hand-hit, ditmaal van Kid Creole & the Coconuts. In de tekst zet 'bad boy' Kid zich af tegen de brave Endicott, wat natuurlijk makkelijk scoren is voor een artiest.

Running Up That Hill en 5 Minutes zijn al besproken.

Aretha Franklin's Who's Zoomin' Who? komt van haar gelijknamige album uit 1985. Wat mij betreft haar beste album tot nu toe en ook het album wat de meeste platina verkocht exemplaren heeft opgebracht. Freeway of Love staat ook nog in m'n top 40 op # vijf. Hierna zullen nog twee singles van het album worden getrokken die ook zeker hoge ogen zullen gaan gooien in mijn lijst.

En we hebben alweer een nieuwe nummer 1 en dat is Kate Bush met Running Up That Hill, The Cure mocht "slechts" 1 week genieten van de bovenste positie.

Nieuw in de top 10 o.a.: The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary op nr.07. Ik ontdekte deze week pas dit nummer want het was de hoogste binnenkomer in de Verrukkelijke 15. De U.K.Top 40 hield ik toen nog niet bij. En nog veel later werd de tipparade pas bereikt (03-86) en misschien dan ook weer terug te vinden in mijn favoriete top 10. Waarom deze info? Omdat het, voor mij persoonlijk, zal uitgroeien tot één van de beste platen uit de jaren '80. Maar dat wist ik toen uiteraard nog niet

The Eurythmics staan een derde week op 1, maar met Kate Bush op 2 lijkt het einde nu wel in zicht. Opvallend is dat Out in the fields nog altijd op 3 volhoudt, in zijn elfde week, en nog niet eerder gezakt.

Vier binnenkomers deze week, en ze staan op heel diverse plekken. Op 14 maar liefst komt Nena binnen met Haus der drei Sonnen. Wie dacht dat Nena na haar monsterhit 99 Luftballons, en wat hitjes in de slipstream, niets meer aan de popmuziek bij te dragen had, vergist zich, want Haus der drei Sonnen is een voltreffer die al haar vorige hits, inclusief die monsterhit, in de schaduw stelt. De song heeft de zeldzame (maar niet unieke) opbouw van felle coupletten en lieflijke refreinen. Vooral in de coupletten wordt een spannende, jachtige sfeer gecreëerd, met gierende gitaar en vocalen die steeds intenser worden. Het harmonieuze refrein contrasteert scherp hiermee. Helaas werd het maar een minieme hit in de NL top 40...

Op 27 de Amerikaanse band 'Til Tuesday met hun bekendste hit, Voices carry. De overheersende stem is van Aimée Mann, die later ook solo nog succes zou hebben.

Op 34 een enthousiaste maar wat overbodige cover van Dancing in the street (Martha & the Vandellas). Het was overigens gedaan voor het goede doel (Live Aid).

Op 39 komt Matt Bianco binnen met een ballad, die ik achteraf wel zijn beste song vind; het heeft een mooi triestig gevoel over zich.

Een overbodige remix die afbreuk doet aan het in wezen uitstekende nummer en de soul fnuikt. Het origineel uit 1976 zou een 9 krijgen, deze moet het stellen met ...

2. David Bowie & Mick Jagger - Dancing In The Street
Twee popgrootheden die een nummer van Martha Reeves & The Vandellas coveren, dit is vermakelijk maar niet indrukwekkend voor hun doen.

9. Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days
Niet het beste nummer uit Born in the U.S.A. maar de passie en vitaliteit spatten er zo vanaf. Hier word je beslist vrolijk van.

17. Normaal - Oerend Hard - Live
Hun beste nummer dat ze hier live brengen. De sfeer zit er volop in maar ik mis hier de riff dat de studioversie kenmerkte.

24. Andre Van Duin/ Simon Naaigaren - Een Boutje En Een Moertje En Een Schroefje En Een Nippeltje / Daar Ben Ik Niet Blij Mee!
Een cover van The Lion Sleeps Tonight met een melige tekst, zijn inspiratie laat het afweten. Met het ondermaatse Daar Ben Ik Niet Blij Mee! ben ik ook niet blij mee.

25. Sting - Love Is The Seventh Wave
Een luchtig en aangenaam reggae-achtig nummer met een snuifje jazz, productioneel is het ook erg geslaagd.

26. Frank Boeijen Groep - Schaduw
Een degelijk luisterlied in een eigentijds jasje gestoken maar niettemin tijdloos, bovendien met veel passie gezongen.

27. Billy Joel - You're Only Human (Second Wind)
Krachtig gezongen, tekstueel zeer sterk, over de productie en meer bepaald de synthesizer ben ik iets minder te spreken. Maar niettemin een hoog cijfer.

28. Powerplay - One Summernight
Een Nederlandse band met een nummer dat heden ten dage toch wat gedateerd klinkt en ook een tikkeltje banaal, hun vroegere singles waren beter.

29. Koos Alberts - Ik Zal Je Nooit Vergeten
Dit zou ik liever zo snel mogelijk willen vergeten en laat ik over aan de liefhebbers.

30. Bad Boys Blue - You're A Woman
Klinkt als een flauw aftreksel van Modern Talking en hopeloos gedateerd. Zang en uitspraak zijn ook niet om over naar huis te schrijven.

Tot overmaat van ramp, ik had het nummer graag willen laten horen, geen mogelijkheden voor Sunset Grill via Youtube. Henley houdt zijn muziek angstvallig achterwege voor alle media. Voor wie eigenlijk vraag je je af. Voor het geld hoeft hij het al 40 jaar niet meer te laten. Toch een puik nummer.

En dan brak natuurlijk de tijd aan van, jawel, Miami Vice! Wat klonken die nummers van Hammer toch modern....

Paar fraaie binnenkomers maar Stevie Wonder

Hij is toch een buitengewoon gerespecteerd artiest, als zodanig?
Ik zal niet zeggen dat hij hier op het toppunt van zijn kunnen en roem staat.
Maar het is toch wel aardig.

Het nummer stijgt overigens naar de 1e plek in de Amerikaanse lijst.
Het is geen Another Star maar aan de andere kant ook geen I just called to say I love you....

Ik ben zelfs best fan van de man, ik heb zelfs een album op 5 sterren staan maar na 1981 was het bedroevend slecht...

Niet zo slecht als Called To Say nee maar dat zijn ook niet zo veel nummers

Ik vond Part Time Lover destijds ook best een aardig nummer, maar of hij nu mijn lijst zal halen

Had hem vorige week al binnen willen laten komen, maar bij mij gaat die ook scoren
Een van zijn lekkerste tracks!

En anders kun je ook nog genieten van 2Pac's versie. Alhoewel die dan weer uit 1991 komt.
