Tipparade: week 35 van 1985.

1. Thompson Twins - Don't Mess With Doctor Dream
In Groot-Brittannië vrij succesvol, daarbuiten veel minder. Wat minder dan hun vorige singles en dat komt door het matige refrein en de te tijdsgebonden productie.
Cijfer: 5

18. Stevie Wonder - Part-Time Lover
Sluit aan bij zijn Motown-hits in de jaren '60 door het ritme maar het klinkt wat meer plastic dan zijn vroege hits al kan ik hem beter pruimen dan I've Just Called To Say I Love You.
Cijfer: 7

22. Harry Slinger en Het Nederlands Elftal - 't Is Weer Fijn Langs De Lijn
't Is weer fijn als dat nummer afgelopen is, dit Oerhollands loflied is geen spek voor mijn bek.
Cijfer: 2,5

23. Anny Schilder - Mama's Dinky Darling
Nog meer meligheid uit Nederland, dit lijkt wel een afdankertje van BZN met erbarmelijke uitspraak.

24. Huey Lewis and The News - The Power Of Love
Dit nummer kan ik niet loskoppelen van de film Back to the Future maar daarnaast is het zeer degelijk nummer, zeker in het genre (AOR) dankzij de prima bluesy zang.

25. 2 Belgen - Lena
Wellicht de grootste dance-klassieker van Belgische bodem dankzij de melodie en erg dansbaar ritme. Natuurlijk is de productie tijdsgebonden maar dat past perfect voor dit nummer waardoor het de tand des tijds goed doorstaat.

26. Two Of Us - Blue Night Shadow
Kende ik niet (meer) maar valt best mee. Vrij smaakvol en ritmisch, een tikkeltje jazzy al moet je dat Duits accent erbij nemen.

27. The Motels - Shame
Deze band ken ik vooral van Suddenly Last Summer, hier zijn de gladde synths en syndrums weer van de partij maar de zang en erg sterke melodie maken veel goed.

28. Stella - Alle Dagen, Alle Nachten
Oerhollandse schlager, net als Vlaamse en Duitse schlagers niet aan mij besteed, ook de zang en het melige refrein kunnen mij niet bekoren.

29. Dennie Christian - Schlagercarrousel/ Grote Vrijheid
Geen clip gevonden (en dat is maar goed ook).

30. Latin Quarter - Radio Africa
Zwoele maar wat melancholieke reggae, vrij apart, alsof dit (inderdaad) uit de Afrikaanse jungle komt. Verdiende destijds meer aandacht.

Kate Bush staat weer waar ze hoort, op 1 . Ik heb het even nagezocht: de meeste nummer 1 hits in mijn top 40 de afgelopen 41 jaar zijn van Kate Bush (met Metallica op een goede tweede plek, maar daar had ik in 1985 nog nooit van gehoord). Nena lijkt hard op weg naar hun tweede nummer 1 hit.

Op 24 een erg droevig-melancholiek werkje van Latin Quarter, Radio Africa, waarin de problemen van het Afrikaanse continent bezongen worden, geen alledaags onderwerp. Dankzij prettige achtergrondkoortjes en fraaie begeleiding wordt het niet te zwaar.

Op 32 Bryan Ferry met het hoogtepunt van zijn tweede carrière als sophisticated crooner: Don't stop the dance. Prettige muziek, maar ik hoor hem liever bij Roxy Music (jaren 70).

Op 33 bij mij het debuut van REM, Can't get there from here. Voor deze single kende ik de band niet, en ook deze werd niet echt alom gedraaid; ik vermoed in de Verrukkelijke tips, en misschien ook in de Verrukkelijke 15. Achteraf vind ik het al heel wat dat ik juist deze uit de anonimiteit heb geplukt, onwetend van de onafzienbare reeks hits die nog zou volgen. Het geluid klinkt hier nog behoorlijk lofi en ongepolijst, maar met melodie en opbouw zit het wel goed.

Op 34 een bijna vergeten song van Gaga, een Nederlandse band met Afrikaanse invloeden en (op Zwartwit) een zeer geëngageerde tekst, Deze band paste heel goed in het links-socialistische geluid dat de VARA toen nog had, maar dankzij de swingende muziek komt het in dit geval niet drammerig over. De tekst gaat zelfs wat richting klankkunst, zoals het woord 'aaneen' klinkt als 'nanenane'.

Op 38 was nog een plekje vrij voor zo'n echte zomerse 'foute' hit, Tarzan boy van Baltimora. In tegenstelling tot veel andere zomerhits blijft deze altijd leuk om nog eens terug te horen.

We beginnen te vertellen dat de lijst van Poeha van vorige week is meegenomen op zijn verzoek en wat laat de nieuwe weeklijst verder zien dat Kate Bush nog altijd niet is uitgerend en zich handhaaft op nummer 1.

Drie nieuwelingen waarvan één al eerder in de lijst heeft gestaan Patti Labelle met Stir It Up, de andere nieuwkomers zijn van Sting en Felt en we zien Nena de meeste winst boeken.

Het is een tijd geleden en dit jaar ook nog niet voorgekomen dat onder de 20 punten een plekje in de weeklijst opleverde, betekend natuurlijk ook dat de lijstjes behoorlijk divers zijn.

Marillion met Kayleigh inmiddels al 20! weken in de lijst en dat gaat normaliter niet meer overtroffen worden door een artiest dit jaar.

Net als bij ex collega Don Henley, kan ik dit keer ook geen normale clip vinden bij de nieuwe single van Glenn Frey. Eerder dit jaar overleden, ik had gedacht dat zijn muziek wel enigszins vrij zou komen, net als bij Prince. Maar helaas. Er is echt niemand die anno 2016 nog iets heeft aan dit verbod.

After the fire is de nieuwe single van Roger Daltrey, geschreven door zijn oude Who maatje Pete Townshend en voor mij het beste werk van The Who in de jaren '80. Ook al is het dan uitgebracht als solo Roger Daltrey. Geweldige power nog steeds en een boeiende tekst.

Oh Heartbeat City here we come en dat is binnen knallen op nummer 9 afkomstig van het gelijknamige album waar overigens behoorlijk wat singles van zijn afgetrokken, in Europa kreeg Heartbeat City nog een kans op single maar kende weinig succes, maar voor mij blijft dit nummer één van mijn favorieten van dit album en het intro is natuurlijk magic

In Nederland moeten we nog een paar maandjes geduld hebben op Broken Wings van Mr. Mister totdat deze single ook hier tot ontplooiing komt wat overigens ook geldt voor Gino Vannelli.

Mr. Mister kende een kortstondig succes in de hitlijsten waar Broken Wings wel het meest is blijven hangen en ook een uitstekende popsingle is, Kyrie vond ik al wat minder al schopte deze single het wel tot een nummer 1 notering in Amerika.

Chris Rea met zijn herkenbare stemgeluid levert met All Summer Long weer een zeer fijn nummer af en streelt de muzikale oortjes.

Boom Boom Mancini is de opvolger van de Urban Heroes waarvan Red Skies het eerste resultaat is en waar de productie in handen was van Barry Hay, de tand des tijds heeft die niet helemaal doorstaan ........ maar ik vind dit nummer nog steeds lekker klinken.

De vreemde eend in de bijt is Don Quichotte van Magazine 60 een muzikaal hoogstandje is het natuurlijk niet eerder een grappig plaatje, maar de lijst kan niet louter en alleen bestaan uit muzikale pareltjes

Spannend aan de top: drie songs zouden graag op 1 staan; voorlopig houdt Kate Bush de concurrentie nog op afstand.

Op 27 komt een fraai Nederlands product binnen, Waterland van Cloud Nine. De productie is ingehouden, zodat de prachtige stem van Petra Lugtenburg mooi uitkomt; alleen de synthesizertoetsen in de refreinen klinken wat dreigend.

Op 30 komt Prefab Sprout weer binnen, nu met Faron Young. In de andere lijstjes zie ik bij jullie Appetite; is Faron Young al geweest of moet hij nog komen? Maakt niet uit, het is altijd goed van Prefab Sprout. En Faron Young is wellicht hun gaafste, net wat herkenbaarder, ook de coupletten zijn erg sterk.

Op 33 verlaat Madness de ska en komt met een serieuze ballad, Yesterday's men. En niet alleen gaat dat ze goed af, ze scoren hiermee bij hun grootste hit! De melancholie komt goed over, misschien wel des te meer omdat het voorheen zo'n feestband was. Helaas werd het geen grote hit.

Op 37 megaster Bruce Springsteen met weer een single van Born in the USA. Glory days is een simpel verhaaltje over hoe twee vrienden van vroeger elkaar toevallig op straat tegenkomen en over vroeger praten. Muzikaal is het ook simpel, vandaar dat het bij mij niet erg hoog zal scoren.

Tipparade: week 36 van 1985.

1. Modern Talking - Cheri, Cheri Lady
Als je één nummer van Modern Talking hebt gehoord heb je ze allemaal gehoord. Gewoon een kopie van hun vorige hits en erg gemakkelijk scoren. Nietszeggende gladde pop zonder inventiviteit.
Cijfer: 3,5

9. Gerard Joling - Ticket To The Tropics
Gerard Joling kon ik die tijd nog best aanhoren, dit in tegenstelling tot zijn latere schlagers laat staan de Toppers. Maar dit is - hoewel glad - een zwoel melancholiek nummer en toen had hij nog een goede stem.
Cijfer: 7

25. Diana Ross - Eaten Alive
De hits waren rond die tijd mechanischer (met vaak steriel en irritant drumwerk) waarbij de soul verdween, ook Diana Ross ontsnapte er niet aan. Hier vind ik weinig aan, geef mij maar haar periode met Supremes en zelfs haar discoperiode (Upside Down bv.).
Cijfer: 4

26. BZN - Run Away Home
BZN was in de jaren '80 niet uit de hitlijsten te denken. Vakkundige muzikanten, goede vocalen en eigen sound maar hun hits hebben echter ook dat melig-kitscherig randje waardoor ze de tand des tijds niet goed hebben doorstaan. Hier wel een voldoende vooral vanwege het ritme.
Cijfer: 6,5

27. Madness - Yesterdays Men
Wellicht hun laatste hit, een rustige Madness. Hoewel ik hun ska-hits in de beginperiode verkies is dit een aangenaam zwoel nummer mede door de saxofoon.
Cijfer: 7,5

28. Princess - Say I'm Your No. 1
Hoewel de productie ook hier typisch eighties is heeft dit nummer merkelijk meer soul dan dat van Diana Ross deze week en wil ik hier wel een voldoende voor geven.
Cijfer: 6

29. Corry - Elke Nacht Ben Ik Eenzaam
Geen clip gevonden (buiten een korte live-versie, niet genoeg om te beoordelen).

30. Bryan Ferry - Don't Stop The Dance
In dit nummer is de productie wel gepast en smaakvol. Mooie song met sfeervolle arrangementen waarin de croonerzang van Bryan ferry goed tot zijn recht komt.

Leuk energiek nummer van de hand van Michael Jackson en de broertjes Gibb (feitje dat wel genoemd worden). Michael is ook te horen. Een beetje in de stijl van het Victory album (The Jacksons). Wat agressief klinkend, maar dat past wel bij het nummer. Tekstueel wat kinderachtig misschien.
Geen topper uit haar repertoire, maar minder dan BZN en Ticket to the topics??

Aan de top geen veranderingen buiten het feit dat de 100 punten weer eens gehaald worden.

We noteren 4 nieuwkomers waarvan we Bryan Adams zien terugkeren met zijn Summer Of '69.
Marillion komt met de opvolger van Kayleigh die nog steeds in de weeklijst genoteerd staat en heet Lavender al zal dit nummer niet de Top 40 gaan halen en dat is best opvallend, want zoveel minder is Lavender namelijk niet vergeleken met Kayleigh.

De overige 2 nieuwelingen Bryan Ferry en The Style Council leveren fijne nummers af waar ik wel in geloof al lijkt niet iedereen even enthousiast en zien we Sting en Felt het goed doen in hun 2e week.

Die van Ferry heb ik nog niet zo lang geleden al gespeeld geloof ik..

Ik ben er nu nog steeds niet uit, of Mr. Mister meer een guilty pleasure is of een bijzondere rocksong. Wat ik mij wel kan voorstellen is dat menigeen het nummer te vaak zal hebben gehoord. Ik laat succes van mijn stemming af hangen, misschien valt het wel heel erg mee.

Het vist natuurlijk allemaal in dezelfde vijver als bijvoorbeeld Heartbeat city van The Cars. Die ik nu nog even beter vind, maar die ik vooral eigenlijk helemaal niet kende. Drive, ja. Maar de titelsong van het gelijknamige album was mij nog nooit opgevallen. Prima track maar ook hier sprake van een naar softrock neigende kwaliteitsplaat, gemaakt voor een groot publiek.

Gelukkig zijn er nog de spierballen en de testosteron van Vandenberg. Het album gaf de band aanleiding binnen te vallen bij de burelen van muziekkrant Oor, om te vragen waar het lef vandaan werd gehaald om er een slechte recensie over te schrijven. De recensent in kwestie had het waarschijnlijk niet begrepen. Ja, dat waren nog eens tijden..

Met I'll Be Good van Rene & Angela weer een vette ontdekking gedaan. Zeker toen ik hoorde dat dit dus blijkbaar het origineel is waar een van de lekkerste tracks van de 90's uit is ontstaan, namelijk I'll Be (1996) van Foxy Brown feat. Jay-Z. Nog meer deep bass. Hier doe je het dan toch voor.
