The Waterboys bereiken de eerste plek, terecht. Kate Bush stormt echter van 15 naar 5, dus hoe lang ze op 1 blijven, is ongewis (nou ja, het staat al in mijn schrift natuurlijk).
Op 26 komt Elton John binnen met Nikita. Op dit moment was Elton een al lang meegaande zanger die nog steeds wel eens een hitje scoorde, maar niemand kon nog weten dat Nikita de hit van het jaar zou worden. Het is een ideale ballad, prachtig gezongen, herkenbare tekst (over een afstandsliefde voor een Oostbloksoldaat) en voorzien van een aansprekende clip (met veel Berlijnse Muur-beelden). Grappig is dat de soldaat in de clip gespeeld wordt door een vrouw (Anya, die later nog van dit succes profiteerde door zelf een hit te scoren met Moscow nights), terwijl Nikita een jongensnaam is en in de tekst nergens wordt gesuggereerd dat die soldaat een meisje is... Commercieel gezien was het een begrijpelijke keuze.
Op 32 komt de gospelversie van Chicago's You're the inspiration binnen, wel een voordehandliggende cover omdat het origineel ook al naar gospel neigt, maar ook wat langdradig.
Op 34 misschien wel de beste single van Siouxsie & the Banshees, Cities in dust, ook weer dankzij de Verrukkelijke 15 een bijna-hit in NL. Vanaf het begin spat het nummer uit de speakers, en de stem als een klok van Siouxsie komt gemakkelijk boven de zware muziek uit.
Op 35 een wat vergeten liedje van Tina Turner, One of the living, natuurlijk weer met professionele passie ingezongen maar het liedjes zelf heeft weinig memorabels.
Op 37 de Time Bandits met een van hun vele singles, Dancing on a string. Ook hier weer ambachtelijke kwaliteit, maar geen blijvende houdbaarheid.

Vier grote popsterren op één nummer te horen maar de song zelf is mij te zoet en neigt bijna naar klefheid, de vocale prestaties ten spijt.

Binnenkort actueel in de VS. De tijdelijke band van Simon Le Bon en de vergelijking met Duran Duran is daarom niet veraf. Natuurlijk in een typische jaren '80-productie maar globaal een behoorlijke single.

24. Total Contrast - Takes A Little Time
Hier stoort de 80's-productie meer en het is bovendien ook geen beklijvend en eerder banaal funknummer.

Vrij zoetsappige reggae maar UB40 komt er goed mee weg en productioneel is dat ook in orde. Hun singles vind ik doorgaans beter dan hun albums (buiten het debuut).

Soul stond anno 1985 meestal synoniem voor zoete en gladde ballads waar dit nummer een voorbeeld van is. De zang en het zwoele jazzy tintje doen mij toch een ruime voldoende geven.

28. Casual Affairs - Emotional Man
Een Nederlandse band die in de vergetelheid is beland. Het doet mij een beetje denken aan A-ha maar de productie is te tijdsgebonden met te overheersende synths en de zang overtuigt niet.

Zij schreef, muzikaal idee aangedragen door vriend en toetsenist Rick Nowels, gespeeld werd er met name door gitarist Michael Landau.
In Nederland en Engeland werd er gekozen voor het uitbrengen van I can't wait, waar in de VS en Duitsland de eerste single van het nieuwe, wisselvallige album Rock a little het nummer Talk to me zou worden. Dat nummer krijgen we later nog vanzelf.
I can't wait staat ook wel een beetje bol van de jaren '80 synthesizers en Stevie heeft spijt van de bijbehorende video: "I look at that video, I look at my eyes, and I say to myself, 'Could you have laid off the pot, the coke, and the tequila for three days, so you could have looked a little better? It just makes me want to go back into that video and stab myself."

Zo'n beetje mijn favoriete singles van Queen en Midge Ure en normaal gesproken moet ik weinig hebben van Glenn Frey als ik wat aardig vind van The Eagles is het over het algemeen van Don Henley en niet van hem maar dit speciaal voor Miami Vice geschreven nummer vind ik wel goed.

We komen tot 7 nieuwkomers deze week (met hier en daar wat "leenwerk" zoals we dat noemen ) en daarbij zien we Mike & The Mechanics met Silent Running met op de lead vocal en tevens één van mijn favoriete zangers Paul Carrack binnen komt knallen op nummer 10, een prachtig popwerkje is het resultaat.
Sting en Simply Red behoren ook tot de categorie mooie plaatjes
Closer To Your Heart van Clannad met dank aan poeha dat afkomstig is van mijn favoriete Clannad album Macalla, maar is het wachten eigenlijk op één van de muzikale pareltjes uit begin 1986 en waar Bono ook op te horen is en dat nummer heet In A Lifetime.
Een mooie ontdekking is One Thousand Violins met Halcyon Days (johan) en zien we Stevie Nicks alle registers opentrekken met I Can't Wait, maar Stevie blijf ik op haar sterkst vinden in de "rustigere" nummers waar haar stem helemaal tot recht komt
Tot slot een lekker nummertje van Jellybean, alleen jammer dat Madonna met haar stemgeluid het nummer wel wat onderuit haalt (een fan van haar stem zal ik wel nooit worden) maar Sidewalk Talk ligt lekker in het gehoor.

Erg fraaie update, Edwin Ik volg jouw altijd (meestal ) met plezier. En terecht blijkt maar weer. Die van Jellybean kende ik niet. Tja In A Lifetime daar is het zeker wachten op. We moeten het nog even zien uit te zingen.

Weer vijf binnenkomers deze week, de hoogste op 22 is van The Communards met hun debuutsingle You are my world. The Communards bestonden uit Jimmy Somerville (bekend van Bronski Beat) en Richard Coles. De combinatie van de falsettostem en popachtergrond met die van een klassieke muziekopleiding leverde een reeks hits op die zowel vlot en swingend waren, maar ook fraai van melodie en instrumentatie. You are my world is hiervan een goed voorbeeld, met opzwepende piano en violen, maar ook de tegen het hysterische aan zittende vocalen van Jimmy. Het is niet overdreven om dit een extatische song te noemen. Aanvankelijk bleef het bij een radiohitje, maar na het grote nog komende succes werd You are my world anderhalf jaar later alsnog een top 40 hit.
Op 33 weer zo'n typisch vergeten VARA-indiebandje, Casual Affairs, met hun bekendste song Emotional man. De sound doet wat denken aan Echo & the Bunnymen, maar ik vrees dat de liedjes niet sterk genoeg waren.
Op 35 Colonel Abrams met een discosong, iets wat steeds zeldzamer werd in mijn top 40. Trapped is vooral goed doordat zang en tekst goed het gevoel overbrengen van gevangen te zitten. Dansbaar is het natuurlijk ook.
Op 36 de eerder genoemde Echo & the Bunnymen zelf, met hun bekendste song Bring on the dancing horses. Hoewel de band te boek staat als een van de populairste new wave bands van het decennium, haalden ze nooit de NL top 40, alleen twee maal de tipparade (waaronder deze). Stem en muziek zijn hier goed op elkaar afgesteld, en vooral de tekst maakt dit lied net wat sterker dan hun andere songs; vooral als Ian McCulloch als variatie op het refrein zingt 'Bring on the new Messiah' heb je het gevoel dat hier wat belangrijks wordt gebracht.
Op 38 de opvolger van het fijne Blackstar, maar als die bij mijn collega's geen enthousiasme weet op te wekken, zal het met Take it out in a boogie zeker niet lukken: een simpel disco-achtig liedje met typische eighties-productie. Vond hem zelf ook niet zo sterk, hij haalt maar twee weken.

Weer vijf binnenkomers deze week, de hoogste op 22 is van The Communards met hun debuutsingle You are my world. The Communards bestonden uit Jimmy Somerville (bekend van Bronski Beat) en Richard Coles. De combinatie van de falsettostem en popachtergrond met die van een klassieke muziekopleiding leverde een reeks hits op die zowel vlot en swingend waren, maar ook fraai van melodie en instrumentatie. You are my world is hiervan een goed voorbeeld, met opzwepende piano en violen, maar ook de tegen het hysterische aan zittende vocalen van Jimmy. Het is niet overdreven om dit een extatische song te noemen. Aanvankelijk bleef het bij een radiohitje, maar na het grote nog komende succes werd You are my world anderhalf jaar later alsnog een top 40 hit.
Op 33 weer zo'n typisch vergeten VARA-indiebandje, Casual Affairs, met hun bekendste song Emotional man. De sound doet wat denken aan Echo & the Bunnymen, maar ik vrees dat de liedjes niet sterk genoeg waren.
Op 35 Colonel Abrams met een discosong, iets wat steeds zeldzamer werd in mijn top 40. Trapped is vooral goed doordat zang en tekst goed het gevoel overbrengen van gevangen te zitten. Dansbaar is het natuurlijk ook.
Op 36 de eerder genoemde Echo & the Bunnymen zelf, met hun bekendste song Bring on the dancing horses. Hoewel de band te boek staat als een van de populairste new wave bands van het decennium, haalden ze nooit de NL top 40, alleen twee maal de tipparade (waaronder deze). Stem en muziek zijn hier goed op elkaar afgesteld, en vooral de tekst maakt dit lied net wat sterker dan hun andere songs; vooral als Ian McCulloch als variatie op het refrein zingt 'Bring on the new Messiah' heb je het gevoel dat hier wat belangrijks wordt gebracht.
Op 38 de opvolger van het fijne Blackstar, maar als die bij mijn collega's geen enthousiasme weet op te wekken, zal het met Take it out in a boogie zeker niet lukken: een simpel disco-achtig liedje met typische eighties-productie. Vond hem zelf ook niet zo sterk, hij haalt maar twee weken.

Duetten moeten niet persé mierzoet zijn, dat bewijst dit nummer. Stevig rockend en met veel passie gebracht.

Dit is wel zoet en ook vrij glad al heeft Lionel Richie beslist zijn kwaliteiten. Die tempoversnelling komt mij wat geforceerd over.

Een schaamteloze verkrachting van My Special Prayer van Percy Sledge (geen link want iedereen op MuMe moet dat nummer kennen) en verder wil ik er geen woorden aan vuil maken.

Waarom moeten dancenummers zolang uitgesponnen worden (bij progrock kan ik dat begrijpen). Banale en vrij gedateerde dancehit zoals ze 13-in-een-dozijn bestaan, dat best aardige funky gitaartje ten spijt.

Weer een platte cover van een jaren '60-hit nl. van Lance Fortune. Het is nog niet zo slecht gebracht maar geef mij toch maar het prachtige origineel.

Dit is best leuk en grappig en ook gezellig, het doet mij een beetje denken aan Nico Haak en Cocktail Trio.

Doordat The Waterboys deze week flink wat punten moesten inleveren hebben we ook gelijk een nieuwe nummer 1 en dat zijn de Talking Heads met de Road To Nowhere en mede door het puntenverlies is het aan de top "ineens" behoorlijk spannend geworden, want tussen de nummer 1 en 4 zitten slechts 8 punten.
De 3 nieuwkomers bevinden zich in de staart van de lijst en komen Lloyd Cole & the Commotions met Lost Weekend dan als hoogste binnen op nummer 16 en ook nooit verwacht om in deze periode van de 80's Ian Dury nog eens te mogen begroeten in de lijst al is Profoundly In Love With Pandora maar in 2 lijsten te vinden in die van musician en de mijne.

Qua naam toch wel een vrij bekende band geloof ik, zeker in het thuisland, maar internationaal toch ook wel een beetje.
Death and the Maiden is hun bekendste single. Ze hebben erg fraaie albums gemaakt.

Ja, dat kan heel goed. Ik had er in ieder geval zelf nog niet van gehoord. En toen ik het nakeek, bleken er vooral wat noteringen in het moederland.

Het is id wel zo ja dat ze qua hitnoteringen in het buitenland nauwelijks aanwezig zijn, dat geldt wel voor meer kiwi en ozzy bands.

En ik vond nu juist de andere twee new entries (met een link) van luigi erg fraaie ontdekkingen. De bands kende ik dan wel van naam, maar om er nou een tracktitel bij op te hoesten, dat lukt(e) me niet.

Als ik voor iemands muziek een zwak had in die tijd was het wel voor Billy Ocean, getuige ook zijn hoge posities eerder in dit spel.
Daarbij kwam ook nog eens de bijbehorende film The Jewel of the Nile (tweeluik met het eerder uitgekomen Romancing the Stone), die volledig in mijn straatje viel en nog steeds. In die tijd keek Poeha boven in zijn slaapkamer als jochie van 14 naar een illegale tv zender uit Weurt (bij Nijmegen). Die zonden 's nachts de nieuwste films uit. Pech was alleen dat ik een oude TV had, met veel ruis in beeld. Dus dat was af en toe lastig kijken. Topfilms in die tijd zijn zeker ook Enemy Mine en vooral Big Trouble in Little China.
En dan de Pet Shop Boys nog zo'n torenhoge favoriet uit de 80's, met mogelijk ook meteen hun beste nummer, al moet het wel concurreren met King's Cross en Paninaro. Die stijgen nog wel even door.
Dan was er deze week weer een van die gelukzalige momenten waarvoor je meedoet aan een topic als dit. De ontdekking van een zeer fraai album van in dit geval Topper Headon, de ex-drummer van The Clash. Die kwam in 1985 met het soloalbum Waking Up. Van de week dus ontdekt en vrijwel alleen maar heerlijke funky soul tracks. Leave it To Luck is een van de singles met Jimmy Helms op zang.
Als laatste nieuwe binnenkomer zonder twijfel het topnummer van Princess. Klinkt als muziek in mijn oren.
Al met al weer eens een fantastisch week uit dit muzikale topjaar.
