Ten koste van het geweldige Don't bang the drum komt Cloudbusting in zijn vierde week al op nummer 1, en wordt daar voorlopig niet bedreigd.
Slechts drie binnenkomers deze week, en nogal laag ook. Op 30 komt Walk of life binnen, de derde single van het succesvolle album Brothers in arms van de Dire Straits. (Ik zie bij sommige collega's ook de titelsong in hun lijst genoteerd staan, maar die is in Nederland nog lang geen single.) Walk of life laat Dire Straits, over het algemeen een serieuze en zelfs wat somber klinkende band, op zijn vrolijkst horen; de dikke synth-toetsen lijken naar de Amerikaanse markt te lonken, en de clip met bloopers van American Football wijzen daar ook op. Ik dacht ook dat dit hun grote doorbraak in de VS was. Persoonlijk heb ik hier veel minder mee, het gaat snel vervelen.
Op 36 heeft Diana Ross succes met Chain reaction, een song geschreven, geproduceerd en van backing vocals voorzien door The Bee Gees. In het genre is het een prima song, met een lekker doordenderend ritme.
Op 38 komt Feargal Sharkey voorzichtig binnen met A good heart. Met The Undertones en zijn solosingle Listen to your father had hij al flink succes in mijn lijst, maar opvallend genoeg gaat het hem bij mij niet lukken met zijn onverwachte grote nummer 1 hit. Ik vind de song behoorlijk langdradig en saai, en volgende week is hij alweer verdwenen...

Tipparade: week 46 van 1985.
1. Wham! - I'm Your Man
Wham! heb ik altijd een leuk bandje gevonden. Niet echt hoogstaand en veel diepgang moet je er ook niet in zoeken maar het klinkt zonnig en levenslustig en George Michael is tenslotte een prima zanger.
Cijfer: 7,5
19. Artists United Against Apartheid - Sun City
Singels waarin vele sterren voor een goed doel zingen hoeven niet persé zoet te klinken, dit klinkt zoveel vitaler en strijdlustiger dan het overbekende We Are the World. Wel nu achterhaald, zowel thematisch als productioneel.
Cijfer: 7
24. Queen - One Vision
Een stevige rocker met de kenmerkende bombast maar productioneel had ik het iets meer basic gewild zoals in hun beginperiode. Degelijke Queen-single zonder meer.

26. Double - The Captain Of Her Heart
Een slome en melige ballad waaraan ik na al die jaren nog steeds weinig aan vind ondanks de leuke piano. Maar de zang en het drukwerk steken mij ook tegen.

27. Rob De Nijs - Alles Wat Ademt
De te pompeuze productie is een minpunt en ontkracht een beetje de boodschap. Het is tekstueel wel een raak nummer.

28. Madonna - Gambler
Een minder bekend nummer van Madonna - het spreekt ook minder aan dan haar meeste hits - maar slecht is het geenszins.

29. The Three Degrees - The Heaven I Need
Een late hit van The Three Degrees, klinkt merkelijk vlakker en fletser dan hun jaren '70-hits (Dirty Old Man, The Runner ...), jammer ...

30. Kool & The Gang - Emergency
Kool & The Gang brengt door de gitaar meer rock in hun sound maar het recept blijft grotendeels hetzelfde al moet het toch afleggen tegenover hun vorige hits.

Marillion voert terecht de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer aan. De scherpe randjes van de eerste twee albums waren dan verdwenen. Maar er bleef toch nog heel wat prachtige symfo over. Dit is een duidelijk voorbeeld van een nummer dat niet direct als single zal zijn bedacht. Kayleigh was natuurlijk veel radiovriendelijker.
Voor het eerst in mijn leven vermoedelijk geen nieuwe single van McCartney die doordringt in de top 30. Dat is ook een vermelding waard. Ik vind Spies like us één van zijn minste. Gelukkig keert hij terug in 1986 met beter werk.

Van John Cougar, John Cougar Mellencamp (deze periode), John Mellencamp en Mellencamp moet ik nodig eens meer gaan beluisteren. Heb me net een fijn half uurtje met enige van zijn bekendere tracks beziggehouden en is me weer erg goed bevallen. Cherry Bomb uit 1987 blijft toch m'n favoriet. Ben benieuwd wat ik nog meer ga ontdekken op zijn albums.

Acht binnenkomers maar liefst, en slechts één hoge, maar dan wel meteen op 10: Russians van Sting. Zoals de titel al laat raden, is het een echt Koude Oorlogliedje, waarbij Sting de spanningen probeert weg te relativeren met het bekende cliché: de Russen zullen toch ook wel van hun kinderen houden? Ongetwijfeld, maar of dat een oplossing dichterbij brengt? Muzikaal is het wel apart, met zware, plechtige toetsenpartijen en sombere teksten (met een glimpje hoop). De Koude Oorlog hebben we overleefd, maar deze tijd kent weer zijn eigen problemen...
Op 29 UB40 met Don't break my heart. In latere jaren zou ik de band afschrijven als een fantasieloze hitmachine, maar nu wisten ze nog wel mijn top 40 te bereiken. Dit is een aardige ballad.
Op 30 King die we nog kennen van het supercatchy Love and pride. The taste of your tears is andere koek, een melancholieke ballad, zeker niet slecht, maar geen instant hit.
Op 31 de Fine Young Canniballs met Blue, een wat vergeten nummer van deze band, maar het behoort wat mij betreft wel tot hun beste singles. Hier zingt Roland Gift nog gepassioneerd vanuit zijn tenen, en is hij boos op de maatschappij.
Op 32 het Zwitserse duo Double, met recht een one hit wonder. De muziek is sfeervol en sophisticated, een beetje dromerig maar toch catchy. Altijd fijn om weer terug te horen.
Op 34 Starship (voorheen Jefferson Airplane en Jefferson Starship) met We built this city. De receptie van deze song heeft mij altijd voor raadselen geplaatst, want ik hoor een enorm catchy song met onverwachte wendingen, geluidseffecten en grappige teksten. Vocaal ook niets mis mee. Waarom krijgt deze song altijd zoveel kritiek alsof het het kwaad zelf vertegenwoordigt?
Op 36 Queen met One vision. De tekst hiervan kreeg toen al kritiek omdat het de totalitaire kant op zou gaan, en ja, daar valt weinig tegen in te brengen ('one true religion'). Maar je kunt zo'n tekst ook positief bedoelen (we zijn allemaal mensen) en ongetwijfeld moet je het ook zo opvatten. Het is wel wat drammeriger dan andere Queen-songs en daarom voor mij een van hun mindere.
Op 38 dan een spetterend duet tussen rising star Bryan Adams en vedette Tina Turner. Vocaal zijn ze tegen elkaar opgewassen en de song is zo heftig en vol geproduceerd dat ik er ook een beetje moe van word...

Tipparade: week 47 van 1985.
1. Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It
Hun singles waren allemaal sterk en waardeer ik nog steeds. Emotioneel en breekbaar mede door de karakteristieke snik in Mark Hollis' stem en sublieme doch rijke arrangementen.
Cijfer: 9
18. Sting - Russians
Dit is dan weer een parel van Sting, weliswaar vrij zwaar van toon en destijds actueel maar blijkt nu nog steeds relevant. Even originele als sombere begeleiding.

23. Siouxsie and The Banshees - Cities In Dust
Staat op Tinderbox die het jaar nadien zou uitkomen. Voor hun doen vrij poppy maar met kenmerkende duistere sfeer. Mooie ruimtelijke productie met de nodige galm maar niet te pathetisch zoals vele gothic-bands.
Cijfer: 8,5
25. Don Dixon - Praying Mantis
Nooit iets van deze zanger beluisterd maar het valt goed mee: vrij catchy met leuke gitaar en gelukkig niet glad geproduceerd zoals vele Amerikaanse rock die tijd.

26. Diana Ross - Chain Reaction
Haar beste single in tijden al was het dankzij het Motown-ritme en de productie van de gebroeders Gibb die ook dit nummer schreven en van gepaste achtergrondzang voorzien.

27. Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart
Zijn grootste succes al had hij dat eerder verdiend bij Undertones. Maar dit is een erg pakkende popsong met heerlijke zang en ritme en krachtige, vrij tegendraadse gitaarsolo in het midden.

28. Dire Straits - Walk Of Life
De prima singles volgen elkaar op deze week, dit is een luchtig maar o zó aanstekelijk en vrolijk nummer waarbij de orgel een zeer belangrijke rol speelt.

29. Far Corporation - Stairway To Heaven

Gezellige rockabilly zonder meer, niet echt bijzonder in dit genre maar de zang van Shakin' Stevens, de achtergondzang en saxsolo zijn hier sterke pluspunten.

1. Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It
Hun singles waren allemaal sterk en waardeer ik nog steeds. Emotioneel en breekbaar mede door de karakteristieke snik in Mark Hollis' stem en sublieme doch rijke arrangementen.

18. Sting - Russians
Dit is dan weer een parel van Sting, weliswaar vrij zwaar van toon en destijds actueel maar blijkt nu nog steeds relevant. Even originele als sombere begeleiding.

23. Siouxsie and The Banshees - Cities In Dust
Staat op Tinderbox die het jaar nadien zou uitkomen. Voor hun doen vrij poppy maar met kenmerkende duistere sfeer. Mooie ruimtelijke productie met de nodige galm maar niet te pathetisch zoals vele gothic-bands.
Cijfer: 8,5
25. Don Dixon - Praying Mantis
Nooit iets van deze zanger beluisterd maar het valt goed mee: vrij catchy met leuke gitaar en gelukkig niet glad geproduceerd zoals vele Amerikaanse rock die tijd.

26. Diana Ross - Chain Reaction
Haar beste single in tijden al was het dankzij het Motown-ritme en de productie van de gebroeders Gibb die ook dit nummer schreven en van gepaste achtergrondzang voorzien.

27. Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart
Zijn grootste succes al had hij dat eerder verdiend bij Undertones. Maar dit is een erg pakkende popsong met heerlijke zang en ritme en krachtige, vrij tegendraadse gitaarsolo in het midden.

28. Dire Straits - Walk Of Life
De prima singles volgen elkaar op deze week, dit is een luchtig maar o zó aanstekelijk en vrolijk nummer waarbij de orgel een zeer belangrijke rol speelt.

Prachtige, geweldige week weer!
Misschien is de nieuwe Mike Oldfield wel buitengewoon geschikt als de kersthit van 1985! "Bevrijd" van zangeres Maggie Reilly, blijkt hij hier een nieuwe te hebben gevonden, vriendin Anita Hegerland. Muzikaal heeft hij de truukendoos van To France en Moonlight shadow nog niet helemaal verlaten; het is inmiddels wel erg geraffineerd geworden. En hoewel fraai, is het nummer wel de commerciële stootkracht, die Oldfield een paar jaar had met z'n singles, volledig kwijtgeraakt.
Destijds was ik daarnaast overigens helemaal weg van Go van Asia. Als dat maar goed gaat!

Ik zie opeens dat mijn lijst vrijwel hoofdzakelijk uit Engelsen bestaat, het zal je deugd doen! Een enkele Amerikaan en natuurlijk de Verlaines uit Nieuw Zeeland en A-ha. Maar de verhouding is echt helemaal zoek, bijvoorbeeld ook geen enkele Nederlandse band.
Uitzonderlijk, het kan natuurlijk ook de tijdsgeest zijn.
