Je zou denken, dat de erfgenamen (voor zover ze nu en definitief bekend zijn) van Prince de hobbyisten van Youtube uitgebreid de ruimte zouden bieden voor zijn gehele oeuvre, met beeld, mooie plaatjes of desnoods tekst voor karaoke.

Elke bekendheid is meegenomen en leidt wellicht tot aanschaf van zijn werk.

Maar niets is minder waar. Integendeel, indirect wordt er alles aan gedaan zijn hits en muziek onder het karpet te vegen en hem aldus in de vergetelheid te laten raken.

Want, dat is de enige conclusie die kan worden getrokken als je hem aan het zicht onttrekt: na verloop van tijd weet niemand meer wie onze geilneef was.
Toevallig vind ik Parade één van zijn mooiste albums die hij heeft gemaakt. Maar het enthousiasme van het verschijnen ontgaat mij altijd een beetje bij al dit dit kinderachtige gedoe op de clipsite, variërend van geen geluid, achterstevoren afgespeeld, covers en lolbroeken die er een jazz soundje aan geven.

Hoe dan ook, geen Kiss op Youtube. Maar in ieder geval dan nog wel bij de Portugese wetsontduikers. Die zijn zich tenminste van geen kwaad bewust.

Toen Prince net was overleden werd YouTube ineens bedolven onder een strotvloed aan clips, ook van veel (obscuurdere) uitgaven en van veel b-sides, e.d. Die bleven toch nog een behoorlijke tijd online. Ik had zelfs de gedachte dat het eindelijk over was met het weren van zijn videomateriaal op YouTube, Maar helaas is het weer bijna als vanouds.

Ik kende de nummer 29 nog niet maar de combi zag er direct mooi uit, het bleek ook een bijzonder fijn liedje te zijn

Als je nu een beetje opgelet had had je dit nummer ook al in mijn lijst gezien van vorige week op nummertje 25, jawel ......

Zelden wordt een top 10 bij mij zo overhoop gegooid als deze week. In a lifetime gaat in zijn derde week al van 4 naar 1, en omgekeerd zakt Mickey pas na 1 week op 1 al naar de vierde plaats.

De hoogste nieuwe is de geweldige cover van de Fine Young Canniballs. Suspicious minds is van zichzelf natuurlijk al een sterk liedje, maar onze Britse vrienden weten er nog meer vaart en urgentie aan te geven, mede dankzij het de gastvocalen van Jimmy Somerville.

Op 31 de band die kortstondig Neerlands metaltrots was, Helloise, met Cosmogony (Grieks: geboorte van de wereld). Het wordt met grote gebaren neergezet, maar het is toch maar een standaard eighties rock song; het valt me nu wat tegen.

Op 32 Arcadia dat met The promise geen hit scoort, maar wel een puik stukje moderne dansbare muziek neerzet, met heerlijke bas en vertrouwde vocalen. Het enige wat ontbreekt is een pakkend refrein.

Op 34 Mr. Mister, dat na Broken wings opnieuw in de roos schiet, met Kyrie (alweer een Griekse term, betekent 'Heer'). Net iets minder bedwelmend dan Broken wings, maar toch wel een vlot nummer waar weinig mis mee is.

Op 35 weer eens iets uit de dance-wereld, Full Force met Alice I want you just for me, met stevig aangezette synth-groove, waarmee ze een nieuwe standaard zetten in de productie. En ook nog een vlot liedje, dus succes verzekerd.

Op 36 de zoveelste (vijfde?) single van Prefab Sprout. Johnny Johnny spreekt net iets minder aan dan de voorgangers, maar de sound is nog hetzelfde en dus fijn om naar te luisteren.

11. Feargal Sharkey - You Little Thief
Wat minder aansprekend dan A Good Heart maar wederom een puik nummer met vette blazers en de krachtige zang. Nadien was het succes weer over.
Cijfer: 8

17. Madonna - Borderline
Komt nog van haar (matig) debuut waarvan dit nummer eruit springt. Terecht op single uitgebracht en heeft bovendien de tand des tijds goed doorstaan.
Cijfer: 7,5

23. Full Force - Alice, I Want You Just for Me!
Tijdloos, dat kan ik minder van deze single zeggen als is het vooral ritmisch best aanstekelijk mede door de sterke baslijn.
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Cock Robin - The Promise You Made
Dit is dan weer een terechte evergreen, vooral op vocaal vlak zit het nummer sterk in elkaar en het refrein is onvergetelijk.
Cijfer: 8,5

26. Sting - Fortress Around Your Heart
Toen kon Sting nog weinig verkeerd doen. Pakkende, sfeervolle en smaakvolle popsong met licht jazzy toets en ijzersterk refrein.
Cijfer: 8,5

27. E.A.V. (Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung) - Ba-Ba Banküberfall
Een erg grappig nummer met maffe clip, blij het eens terug te horen. Guilty pleasure, zeg maar.
Cijfer: 8

28. Blue Murder - Talk Talk Talk
Ook lang niet meer gehoord, blijkt een Nederlandse band te zijn. Lonkt naar Talking Heads maar niettemin een frisse popsong met leuke rinkelende gitaar. Verdiende beslist meer dan een tipnotering.
Cijfer: 7,5

29. Kyle - Let's Get Away From Here
Ook in de vergetelheid geraakt. Te gladde en vrij zoete soul - typisch voor die tijd - al is zijn zang vrij apart.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Leo Sayer - Unchained Melody
Leo Sayer covert vaak maar dit is een overbekend nummer dat al plat gecoverd is. Op zich goed gedaan - aan zijn zang valt niets op af te dingen - maar inspiratievol is anders en de eigentijdse productie vind ik ook niet bij passen.

En toen bracht Marillion alleen in de VS Lady Nina uit, met als b-kant Heart of Lothian, dat dus geen hit werd.
Wij kenden Lady Nina als b-kant van Kayleigh, de eerste single van Misplaced Childhood.

Lady Nina staat daar niet op en is feitelijk dus een "los" nummer.

Mij stoort het niet, dat een oorspronkelijk b-kantje in de VS nu werd uitgebracht als officiële A-kant. Niet dat het daar een grote hit werd, dat is natuurlijk niet het punt.

Het product uit eigen land heeft de overhand wat betreft het aantal nieuwkomers deze week, Media is weer zo'n "typische" verrukkelijke 15 band die daar wel tot daden weet te komen, maar in de Top 40 bijvoorbeeld dan weer niet.

Erik Mesie (Toontje Lager) op de solotoer met een Nederlandse vertaling van dit nummer en we zien de laatste stuiptrekking van de Future World Orchestra met S.O.S Hear My Call, want hierna gaat het angstvallig stil worden rond deze formatie, maar wat overblijft is een leuke jeugdherinnering

ik heb de single in huis van Mesie. Ik vind het een goed lied maar die hoes en die schoenen van Erik

Op een gegeven moment had ik ik het wel gehad met Jeanny - part 1 in die tijd. Maar heden ten dage is het gewoon een zeer sterke song. En ben meteen zijn oeuvre maar is aan het uitspitten. Out of the Dark (1998) is alvast ook zeker genietbaar.

Bovenin weinig veranderingen, en slechts drie binnenkomers.

Maar wat voor een binnenkomer is de eerste! Op 12 maar liefst. De band Mam hebben we al eerder in de lijsten gezien, maar toen ik Maternité voor het eerst op de radio hoorde (ongetwijfeld bij de Verrukkelijke tips van de Verrukkelijke 15) was ik meteen overdonderd. Ik had nog nooit een liedje gehoord dat tegelijk zo fantastisch swingde dat je niet stil kon blijven zitten, en een tekst had die tranen in je ogen opriep. Dat doet Maternité bij mij. Een hit werd het helaas niet, en ook voor de Mume-ladder heb ik het vergeefs genomineerd. In mijn top 200 Aller Tijden is dit de hoogst genoteerde Nederlandse productie. Eeuwig jammer is dat de band kort na het uitkomen van deze song op onze studentenvereniging zou optreden, maar dat ik het begin van het concert heb gemist (ze begonnen eerder dan ik had gedacht) en dat ze aan het begin Maternité hebben gespeeld en dat het dak er meteen af ging... De rest van het concert was ook erg goed, gelukkig.
Wat ik er zo goed aan vind? Maternité is geschreven naar aanleiding van een tentoonstelling van moderne kunst in het Stedelijk Museum, La Grande Parade; hiervan is ook een album samengesteld met songs van andere artiesten over andere schilderijen. Maternité is een schilderij van Picasso. En Mam weet dat idee van moederschap heel goed te vangen door enkele flarden van de werkelijke moeder van Tom America, de componist van dit lied, als een sample avant-la lettre door de swingende muziek heen te weven, na-gezongen door de band. En die tekst doet mij denken aan mijn eigen situatie, toen ik een jaar of drie was en ik ook een broertje erbij kreeg (niet dat ik me dat nog zo herinner).

MAM: Maternité (boterham met kaas) 1986 - YouTube

Op 34 komt de tweede single van Drum Theatre binnen, Living in the past, net zo jachtig en swingend als voorganger Eldorado, maar helaas geen refrein dat blijft hangen. En hiermee was het succes van de band alweer afgelopen.

Op 36 Jeanny van Falco, wat een heel ander verhaal oplevert. Volgens mijn herinnering maakte Frits Spits deze plaat Steunplaat, maar kwam hij er een week later (of zo) op terug, omdat hij door kreeg waar de tekst over ging. Zoals iedereen wel zal weten, gaat Jeanny over de verkrachting en moord op een minderjarig meisje. Nu is dat al apart genoeg als onderwerp, maar het 'kwalijke' zit erin dat de coupletten je meenemen in de gedachtewereld van de verkrachter/moordenaar, terwijl het Engelstalige refrein vrij onschuldig lijkt. Ikzelf hoor ook wel dat Jeanny een bijzonder, origineel product is, ook met commerciële waarde, maar het valt mij niet mee ervan te genieten als je weet waar het over gaat. De single komt nu wel binnen en stijgt nog tot 23, daarna zakt hij snel weer weg.

Wel mooi dat We built this city met zijn 14 weken deze week ruim de langst genoteerde is.

1. Mr. Mister - Kyrie
Niet het soort rock dat ik graag hoor - te pompeus, de vorm lijkt belangrijker dan de inhoud - al blijft het refrein wel hangen.

21. Starship - Sara
Dit behoort tot dezelfde categorie (A.O.R.) waarbij de pompeuze productie de clichématige en nietszeggende song moet camoufleren.
Cijfer: 3,5

24. Matt Bianco - Just Can't Stand It
Wat minder dan zijn vorige hits, de synthesizer is hier te dominant evenals de (matige) vrouwelijke zang.
Cijfer: 5

25. The Bangles - Manic Monday
Dit daarentegen blijft goed overeind: fris, catchy en enthousiast waarbij je het refrein zo meezingt. Geschreven door Prince die weet hoe een even hitgevoelig als tijdloos nummer weet te brengen.
Cijfer: 8,5

26. Frank Ashton - Remember The Good Times
Zwakke Engelse uitspraak, cheesy synths en doorsnee compositie (vooral tekstueel), allemaal redenen waarom dit nummer (terecht) in de vergetelheid is geraakt.
Cijfer: 3,5

27. Whitney Houston - How Will I Know
Gladde soul maar best aardig nummer (het blijft beslist hangen) en uiteindelijk zingt Whitney Houston het op haar best in.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Don Dixon - Southside Girl
Lijkt een nummer uit de jaren '60 maar zulke natuurlijke productie heb ik veel liever dan die opgepompte A.O.R.-producties van Mr. Mister en Starship. Aanstekelijke melodie ook, werd geen hit wegens niet hip.

29. Here's Johnny - Idlewild
Dit lijkt dan weer uit de jaren '40 in bigbandstijl, maar de zang spreekt mij iets minder aan en lijkt het orkest in de weg te staan.

30. Falco - Jeanny
Ligt op de dunne scheidingslijn tussen theatrale kitsch en pakkende, aangrijpende compositie. De drama ligt er dik op maar laat ik dit net aan de goede kant van de lijn zien.
