Vier binnenkomers, waarvan twee zonder meer klassiekers te noemen zijn. Op 20 komt Clannad binnen, met gastvocalen van Bono. In a lifetime is een uitzonderlijk fraaie compositie, met veel wendingen, passie en muzikaliteit, en dat in zo'n korte tijd.
Op 25 The promise you made, het debuut van Cock Robin, wat toch dicht in de buurt komt van de perfecte popsong, gezongen in duetvorm, met veel ingehouden spanning, maar ook gewoon een lekker vlot liedje.
Op 30 weer een single van Sting, Fortress around your heart. Het blijft degelijke popmuziek, ik denk zelfs wat beter dan zijn meeste singles.
En op 33 ook geen kleintje, Burning heart van Survivor. Opmerkelijk dat deze band het kunstje van Eye of the tiger weet te herhalen (nog een nummer 1-hit), beide themasongs van Rocky-films, terwijl ze verder in NL niets gescoord hebben. Eye of the tiger vind ik wel wat sterker, en die hoor je ook wat vaker, maar Burning heart werd de grootste hit.

Tipparade: week 4 van 1986.
1. Simple Minds - Sanctify Yourself
Simple Minds is definitief een hitparadeband geworden maar de gedrevenheid is er nog. Vind ik zeker zo goed als Alive and Kicking.
Cijfer: 8
7. a-ha - The Sun Always Shines On TV
Dit is ook eightiespop zoals het moet met sterke zang en smaakvolle synths, het rockt voor hun doen ook behoorlijk.

23. Johnny Nash - Rock Me Baby
Johnny Nash ken ik meer van zijn jaren '70-reggaehits als Hold me Tight en Tears on My Pillow. Dit vind ik minder - het heeft weinig met reggae meer vandoen - maar zijn zang doet mij nog een voldoende geven.

24. Ruby Turner ft Jonathan Butler - If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)
Een cover van The Staple Singers en dan dringt zich onvermijdelijk de vergelijking met het origineel. Deze is iets meer soulvol al is de cover niet onverdienstelijk hoewel het weinig toevoegt.

25. Jellybean - Sidewalk Talk
De vroegere vriend en ontdekker van Madonna waarbij haar zang ook te horen is. Die was duidelijk nog niet op punt in dit nummer dat uiteindelijk te eentonig is.

26. Labyrinth - Help Me Out
Vreselijke productie met die dominante syndrums en kazige synths, verder stelt het nummer - zeker vocaal en tekstueel - te weinig voor.

27. Robert Palmer - Riptide
Een croonersnummer op een lome synthesizerbeat getoonzet, eindigt vrij abrupt. Een beetje vreemd nummer dat begrijpelijk geen hit werd maar zeker niet slecht.

28. Dee C Lee - See the Day
Vreemd dan dat nummer geen hit werd, het heeft de allure van een soulklassieker met mooie violen en sax en gevoelige zang.

29. Patty Brard - Red light
Ex-Luv'-zangeres doet het op haar eentje met een nummer dat productioneel te tijdsgebonden is en het blijft ook niet hangen wegens te vlak en vrij banaal.

30. Level 42 - Leaving Me Now
Vakkundige maar ook wat vlakke popsong, Level 42 is meer geschikt voor funky nummers.

Een nummer gaat bij mij pas scoren als ik het in de hitlijsten voorbij zie komen, waar ik alles uithaal.
En dat zal voor Clannad/Bono vanaf deze week zijn.

Als we het over heer en meester hebben dan zien we A-Ha de show stelen met 96 punten en daarmee houden ze de concurrentie (als je het daar al over kan hebben) op indrukwekkende achterstand.
We zien ook een flinke opruiming in de lijst wat resulteert in maar liefst 6 nieuwe binnenkomers en zien we Prefab Sprout met Johnny Johnny als hoogste nieuwe op 9 de lijst betreden.
Het is inmiddels alweer een tijdje geleden
maar ook The Smiths komen weer eens binnen in de lijst en als ik eens een voorspelling mag doen verwacht ik niet dat dit het laatste nummer is wat dit jaar de weeklijst binnen gaat komen

Ik heb met mijn voorwerk voor dit jaar een gigantische hoeveelheid tips. Alleen al voor de maand februari nog 29.... Dat staat dan nog los van wat er bij dit topic vandaan komt en ook nog eens van alle (internationale) hitlijsten.
Mijn kennis van die tijd (1986) en wat ik toen heb ervaren afgezet tegen wat ik dan nu aan extra nieuw werk hoor en heb opgespoord, is in hoeveelheid gewoon niet meer samen te voegen. Heel veel nummers laat ik nu al zitten. Een "best of both worlds" is natuurlijk altijd wel mogelijk, maar ik kan gewoon geen 40 nummers in een top 10 persen.
Dus heel veel songs worden prestatie-matig helemaal niks. En dan nog in de wetenschap (maart heeft een vergelijkbaar aantal nieuwe nummers als februari) dat de volgende maand alweer klaar staat te stomen met dezelfde problemen.
Het is gewoon niet op te lossen. Natuurlijk zijn er veel meer nummers ooit uitgebracht dan dat er ooit hits werden. Misschien dat 10% ooit de hitlijsten heeft gehaald. Maar als je dan gaat "roeren" in de (veelal onbekend gebleven) rest van de overgebleven 90% en dat gaat optellen, blijf je voor een hitlijst met 30 nummers nergens meer.
Enfin, we slaan ons er maar moedig doorheen!
Dat er veel goede muziek werd uitgebracht, staat in ieder geval buiten kijf.

Op 29 komt Rise binnen, het verrassend melodieuze lied van Public Image Limited (band van Johnny Rotten/Lydon). Het refrein schijnt een Ierse zegswijze te zijn voor 'goede reis ' (May the road rise with you). De ouderwets venijnig gezongen coupletten contrasteren fraai met het traditioneel klinkende refrein.
Op 31 een versie van het alom bekende Unchained melody door Leo Sayer, die ik eerlijk gezegd totaal vergeten was. Zingen kan de kleine man wel; de productie is eigentijds (d.w.z. eighties), maar verder niet opzienbarend. Overigens ook de laatste keer dat Leo Sayer mijn lijst haalde, of de NL tipparade.
Op 32 het soulfulle, bijna gospelachtige Caravan of love door Isley Jasper Isley. Hoewel dit het origineel is en een aardig top 40-hitje werd, gingen de heren van The Housemartins met het commerciële succes aan de haal met hun wat ironischer klinkende a capella-versie. Ik hou het liever bij het origineel, beter gezongen en sowieso inventiever uitgevoerd.
Op 37 een vlotte popsingle van Feargal Sharkey, de opvolger van A good heart dat het in mijn lijst met 1 weekje moest doen; daar gaat You little thief in ieder geval makkelijk overheen.
En op 38 komt zowaar Madonna binnen, voor het eerst in mijn top 40. Ze maakte een slechte start met slecht gezongen wegwerpdisco als Lucky star en Holiday (brrr), maar daarna werd elke single wat sterker en met Borderline moest ik erkennen: dit is best een aardig liedje. De synths klinken hier opgewekt en er lijkt iets van diepgang in de tekst te vinden zijn. Madonna zou nog heel wat keer mijn lijst halen, maar veel vaker toch beslist niet.

ik heb juist mijn best gedaan om de formulering zo helder mogelijk te maken .
Stel dat Madonna nog 50 singles maakt (het zijn er meer, geloof ik). Als ze dan zo'n 10 keer mijn top 40 haalt, is dat nog heel wat keer. Maar 40 keer niet is veel vaker beslist niet...

1. Teddy Pendergrass vs Whitney Houston - Hold Me
Midden jaren '80 is soul helaas vaak synoniem van zoete en gladde ballads en dit is weer zo'n voorbeeld. Mij niet gezien, geef mij maar de vroegere soul.
Cijfer: 3,5
10. Survivor - Burning Heart
Van die pompeuze, op-en-top Amerikaanse rock (A.O.R.) ben ik ook geen liefhebber maar dit krijgt de voordeel van de twijfel mede door de krachtige zang. Al lijkt het erg op hun andere hit Eye of the Tiger.

27. Talking Heads - And She Was
Talking Heads kan daarentegen wel altijd voor mij. Wat meer poppy voor hun doen maar een vrolijke en toch vrij inventieve popsong dat geen enkel ogenblik melig is.

Vrij anonieme single dat op geen enkel vlak boven het maaiveld uitsteekt of opvalt. En dat is net nodig om een evergreen te worden.
