In de diverse persoonlijke hitlijsten doet Absolute Beginners het ook al zo goed en dat verbaast me toch wel, want dit nummer komt geen seconde in de buurt van zijn jaren 70 werk of is het de naam Bowie die de aandacht weet te trekken?

Ik snap niet waarom je het zou moeten vergelijken met zijn 70s werk
Je moet het vergelijken met al het andere werk dat er in 1986 werd uitgebracht en daar steekt het zeker positief bij af. Een van de betere hits van het jaar wat mij betreft.
Een klassesingle, en wat mij betreft ook zeker een van zijn beste 80s-singles

Gewoon een klasse Bowie-song! Anders dan zijn 70s werk ok, maar het is 1 van mijn favoriete songs van hem. Zeker een van zijn beste 80s songs, wat een gevoel

Kan inderdaad niet tippen aan het jaren 70 materiaal en is ook niet zijn beste nummer uit de 80's maar het gaat wel wat ver om daar een discussie over te starten. Dat lijkt me dan veel logischer bij die 2 duetten die op de 1ste plaats kwamen in de Top 40 met Jagger en Turner. Dat was pas uitverkoop dat kan je hier toch niet zeggen.

Klopt, die waren ver onder de ondergrens

En toch kan ik die ook waarderen
Maar of ze in mijn Bowie top 200 zouden staan is een andere vraag

Ik ben zelf niet zo heel erg van de titelsong van het nieuwe Queen album A kind of Magic.
In de VS werd het ook niet uitgebracht nu, maar werd er gekozen voor Princes of the Universe.
Kijk, dat is dan meer mijn cup of Queen tea.

Verder even behoorlijk huisgehouden in de lijst, waarschijnlijk waar het voorjaar al een beetje rond.
Jammer genoeg deze week geen liefhebbers er bij voor Manfred Mann's Earth Band en Tom Waits. Beiden echter in topvorm!

ik zie dat R.E.M. ‎– Femme Fatale bij sommige in de lijst binnen komt, het is best een mooie fragiele versie maar wel eentje uit 1984. De link naar dit jaar is dat deze in 1986 als promo flexidisc (u weet wel zo'n flubbeldingetje) gratis is weggegeven bij een muziekblad maar om dat nou als een goede reden te zien om deze op te nemen

Door hardnekkige tegenstand van Clannad duurde het tot de vijfde week voor Mam op 1 wist te komen.

Op 17 vinden we alweer een klassieker, een top 100 Aller Tijden song, en vreemd genoeg heb ik hem nog niet bij mijn collega's gezien (of ik moet het gemist hebben). I still believe van The Call past wel enigszins bij de spiritueel getinte muziek van U2, maar dan wel de Amerikaanse variant daarvan. De song bouwt de spanning langzaam op, zowel muzikaal als tekstueel; de zang is zeer gepassioneerd en een song als deze is ook echt in staat om je kracht en moed te geven om door te gaan als je het zwaar hebt.

Op 27 twee zoetgevooisde zangers, Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) en Lori Spee, met een ballad waarmee ze geen nieuwe paden inslaan, maar wel een heel prettige laid back sfeer creëren, en daar is niets mis mee.

Op 31 de doorbraak van het Australische Mental as Anything met Live it up, nog altijd een aanstekelijke popliedje met een refrein dat niet kapot te krijgen is.

Op 36 Amerikaanse rocker Bob Seger met het gejaagde American storm.

Op 37 ten slotte Howard Jones met het wat introspectief-filosofische No one is to blame.

Tipparade: week 11 van 1986.

1. Move Away - Culture Club
Nog een late hit van Culture Club en één van hun betere. Eigentijdse maar sublieme arrangementen, sterk refrein en treffende zang.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Talk Talk - Living in Another World
Wederom een prima song van Talk Talk met indringende zang en de nodige passie waarbij de arrangementen in dienst staan van de melancholieke, dramatische sfeer. Zonder twijfel het betere werk in de 80's.
Cijfer: 8,5

26. Floy Joy - Weak In The Presence Of Beauty
Ken ik eerder in de versie van Alison Moyet, van wie is het origineel? Mooie song maar vocaal merkelijk minder dan de soul van Alison Moyet.
Cijfer: 6

27. Stella - In De Nacht Ben Jij Gekomen
Lijkt wel de vrouwelijke tegenhanger van Koos Alberts en dat is nooit een goed teken. Vergankelijke schlager zonder meer.

Deze band zou pas (even) doorbreken met You, dit mag er ook zijn (een beetje schatplichtig aan Talk Talk) al is het productioneel wat te tijdsgebonden (die drums bv.).
