Een "frisse" wind raast door de lijst heen mede door de zevenklapper aan nieuwe binnenkomers en zien we The Pretenders en David Sylvian direct de Top 10 binnenwaaien.

De overige nieuwelingen zagen we misschien al een beetje aankomen, al hadden The Communards nog wel het bekende zetje nodig.

Aan de top nog geen verandering en houdt OMD alweer voor de 3e week stand op nummer 1 en zien we Queen de Top 3 binnenkomen.

De vrije val van Killing Joke is deze week opvallend te noemen door te zakken van 2 naar 15 maar de fantastische nieuwe single Sanity zal zich ongetwijfeld gaan melden in de weeklijst?

Dreamtime gaat in z'n 10de week weer flink vooruit!

Ik heb weer een hoop "bagger" voorbij horen komen deze week, vooral het alternatieve circuit in de "bubbling under" is anno 1986 behoorlijk aan het schutteren en oninteressant. Ik ben van het meeste in ieder geval niet onder de indruk.

En als het dan niet allemaal even fraai is is er nog een hele groep aan oudjes (hoewel, wat is 41) die geweldig voortborduren aan hun imposante carrière en helemaal niet hoeven worden overgeslagen omdat ze nu eenmaal wat ouder waren, ook al op dat moment.

Zoals er is Eric Clapton, veel succes gehad met zijn terugkeer na het album Behind the sun en de single Forever Man, nu gevraagd voor een filmtrack. It's in the way that you use it zou later zijn nieuwe album August voortreffelijk openen.

Ook singles van Grace Jones, Joe Cocker, Robert Cray, helemaal niets mis en kwalitatief sterk.
En dan is er zelfs opeens ruimte voor... de Bangles.

Slechts drie binnenkomers, maar wel weer twee overbekende, en nog eentje voor de fijnproevers. Op 30 vervolgen de Pet Shop Boys hun succesvolle pad met Suburbia, een indringende song over het leven in de buitenwijken, met veel hondengeblaf en meer zang (in plaats van parlando) dan ooit tevoren, misschien wel hun meest on-Pet Shop Boys-achtige song ooit. En erg geslaagd.

Op 33 Crowded House, een nieuw bandje, maar met oude bekenden uit de magische band Split Enz. The world where you live haalt geen hitsucces, maar is wel meteen een melodieus meeslepend liedje zoals er nog vele zouden volgen. En hier zit er ook nog wat vaart in.

Op 35 The Bangles met hun eerste nummer 1 hit, Walk like an Egyptian. De titel spreekt direct aan, iedereen ziet voor zich hoe de oude Egyptenaren op de grafschilderingen 'liepen'. Het liedje spreekt ook meteen aan, erg vlot, met wat stop-momenten en een geinige tekst, en zelfs nog wat stevig gitaarwerk.

15. Bruce Hornsby and The Range - Every Little Kiss
Hun tweede hitsingle, rockt iets meer maar de sprankelende piano is weer van de partij. Mooie bluesy zang ook.
Cijfer: 8

21. Aretha Franklin - Jumpin' Jack Flash
De Stones-versie kan onmogelijk overtroffen worden (overigens één van hun beste), de cover van Aretha Franklin is verdienstelijk maar dan vooral door haar zang.
Cijfer: 7

22. Queen - Who Wants To Live Forever
Met de kenmerkende Queen-bombast maar ook met een enorme emotionele lading. Wellicht hun beste nummer in de jaren '80. Het leek wel of Freddie Mercury toen al wist dat zijn einde nabij was.
Cijfer: 9

23. The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me '86
Een volkomen overbodige remake dat niet kan tippen aan het origineel. Het aanstekelijke reggae-ritme is weg en productioneel is dat ook veel minder met slechte syndrums.
Cijfer: 4,5

24. Centerfold - Up And Coming
Hier zijn de drums ook een minpunt, het nummer is verder een mindere doorslag van hun vorige hit Dictator.
Cijfer: 4

25. Sandra - HI! HI! HI!
Ook hier hoor je aan de productie dat het enkel rond 1986 uitgebracht kon worden. Haar dichtgeknepen en niet al te toonvaste zang is nog een minpunt.

26. Elton John - Heartache All Over the World
Van deze man heb ik veel beter gehoord. Vrij banale rock waarbij ook hier de plastieken productie met een overdaad aan synths het nummer nog wat meer devalueert.
Cijfer: 4

27. Robin Wolter - Back in my Arms Again
Kende ik niet, ik hoor daar iets in van Four Seasons en Beach Boys. Geen slecht nummer maar niet opzienbarend.
Cijfer: 6

28. Sherity - It's All Wrong, But It's Alright
Geen clip gevonden.

29. The Shorts - Maar Toen Kwam Jij
The Shorts zijn weliswaar volwassener geworden maar zowel vocaal als tekstueel is het nog niet je dat.
Cijfer: 5

30. Ultravox - Same Old Story
Redelijke single van Ultravox maar zonder veel nieuwe ideeën, hun beste tijd was duidelijk achter de rug. De zang Midge Ure is wel klasse.

Verdwenen uit de lijst:

Wederom een "opvallende" en "verrassende" lijst zeker als het gaat om de nummer 1 deze week, want daar staan ineens The Smiths waar het al die tijd niet wou lukken om op nummer 1 te komen met Panic is het in de 11e week wel raak.
Overigens wel met het laagste aantal punten voor een nummer 1 notering deze jaargang, maar dat zal The Smiths een zorg zijn

Ook R.E.M. zit weer behoorlijk in de lift en zien we terug op nummer 2.

Drie nieuwelingen in de lijst waar we The Stranglers met Always The Sun zien binnenkomen als hoogste op nummer 12 en over de zon hebben we niks te klagen deze dagen was het gisteren al een prachtige herfstdag dat gaan we vandaag nog eens dunnetjes over doen, sowieso een mooi jaargetijde de herfst, maar dit terzijde.

Nogmaals The Smiths en ditmaal met Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others op nummer 17 en Nikki Sudden And The Jacobites met Jangle Town sluit de rij binnenkomers.

Felt en de Pet Shop Boys maken flinke stappen deze week en voor Daryl Hall lijkt het einde toch wel in zicht met Dreamtime.

Ach, hopelijk wil iemand anders ook de Mighty Lemon Drops oppikken, het is echt geweldige muziek. De single keuzes van het album Happy Head zijn prima en er is niks om op aan te merken. Enfin, meer dan een notering kan ik er niet aan doen.

Ook het debuut van Crowded House, heeft even in de wacht gestaan, maar is nu dan toch en ook behoorlijk sterk aanwezig. Had ik niet gedacht, vooraf had ik teveel Don't dream it's over in mijn hoofd.

Wie mij ook verraste was Billy Joel. Jawel, 1986 en hij weet nog prima hoe sterke songs te schrijven. Tina Turner moet er weer even in komen.

Code of Silence van datzelfde album (The Bridge) is ook zo'n heerlijke rocker.

Where Did Your Heart Go? samen met The Edge of Heaven (die deze week na 17 weken afscheid neemt) en Battlestations het beste wat Wham! heeft voortgebracht.

Billy Ocean (een van mijn favoriete artiesten in die tijd) kwam weer met een sympathieke track, maar eerlijk gezegd had hij haast elk nummer in die tijd op single kunnen uitbrengen wat mij betreft. Zeer constante kwaliteit op twee van zijn albums rond die tijd (Suddenly (1984) en
Love Zone (1986).
