Slechts één nieuwkomer deze week en dat is Depeche Mode met A Question Of Time.

In de Top 10 gebeurd nog het meest en zien we Killing Joke opstomen naar de 2e plaats, Black en The Chameleons zitten ook aardig in de lift, maar voor de rest is het een wat voortkabbelende week geworden.

Dat Some girls are bigger than others is uitgebracht, staat buiten kijf.

Zelf denk ik eind juni in Europa (Duitsland). Zowaar volgens de Wiki. Dat zou dan gerechtvaardigd zijn, als laatste single van The Queen is Dead en voordat Panic werd uitgebracht. Klinkt logisch. Alleen werd het nergens een hit.

Inzake The Smiths is echter zelden iets logisch, lopen er landen achter en worden er ook wel eens verschillende tracks uitgebracht. Volgens RYM werd Some girls.. in de VS uitgebracht in oktober. Aanvankelijk wilde ik wel wachten daar op, maar eind oktober hebben we alweer de opvolger van Panic.

Bovendien is het effect van The Queen is Dead wel definitief verdwenen en verschijnt er in 1987 uiteraard weer een nieuw album.
Vandaar mijn redenering Some girls are bigger than others nu mijn lijst in te schuiven. Over vijf weken zie ik dan wel weer.

Het is niet de enige single waarvoor je rechtop kunt gaan zitten. De nieuwe single van David Sylvian, op het hoogtepunt van zijn kunnen, is eveneens om door een ringetje te halen. De Little River Band natuurlijk ook voor ware fijnproevers.

Some Girls en Sylvian allebei prachtig natuurlijk! Volgend jaar is het lichtje er nog

Sylvian is wel mooi ja.

Deze little River band voor fijnproevers? Gelukkig hoor ik daar dan niet bij, wat een braaf saai nummer zeg

There is a Light werd als single uitgebracht in januari 1987 dus in die zin is het effect van The Queen is Dead nog lang niet uitgewerkt

Tja, in Frankrijk. Volgens mij verschijnt in de rest van de wereld Shoplifters of the world Unite (eveneens) in januari 1987, als 3e single van The World won't listen. Dat wordt dan nog druk

Tipparade: week 39 van 1986.

1. The Communards (feat Sarah Jane Morris) - Don't Leave Me This Way
Oorspronkelijk van Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, de versie van The Communards is uiteraard gladder maar ook wat vlotter. In zijn geheel toch wel geslaagd mede door de vocalen.
Cijfer: 7

12. Madonna - True Blue
Heb ik steeds een prima single gevonden, vrij simpel maar prettige melodie en ritme en vocaal wordt Madonna steeds beter.
Cijfer: 8,5

24. Erik Mesie - Swingking
Tweede solosingle van Toontje Lager-zanger. Vocaal gaat ook hij vooruit maar de drums en het flauwe refrein weerhouden mij om een hoog cijfer te geven.
Cijfer: 5

25. Randy Crawford - Almaz
Mooie gevoelige ballad en Randy Crawford vind ik een prima soulstem hebben. Had zeker een hitnotering verdiend maar soul was anno 1986 blijkbaar niet meer in.

26. De Germa's - De Kanarie van Arie
Een carnavalsnummer in september? ik kan er een keer mee lachen maar het is natuurlijk van heel korte houdbaarheid.
Cijfer: 3,5

27. El Debarge - Love Always
Wederom een ballad maar veel minder dan dat van Randy Crawford door de afgeknepen stem en de kazige synths. Dit werd dan wel een hit.
Cijfer: 4

28. Herman Van Veen - Anne
Deze man heeft een ontzettend groot oeuvre (is er een Nederlandse zanger die meer albums heeft uitgebracht?) en het meeste van zijn werk is tijdloos. Dit geldt ook voor deze smaakvolle, licht jazzy single.
Cijfer: 8,5

29. Hubert Kah - Limousine
Kende ik voorheen niet, het klinkt mij te synthetisch, het soort geluid typisch van die tijd waar ik niet van hou. De zang spreekt mij ook niet erg aan.

30. E.G. Daily - Love In The Shadows
Ook dit kende ik niet (meer), weliswaar ook tijdsgebonden productie maar uiteindelijk een goed opgebouwde song met een tikkeltje mystiek.

Na 5 weken een nieuwe op 1, en weer een frisse jonge band, In Tua Nua, wel al in de zevende week. Hoewel weinig meer gehoord, nog steeds ijzersterk!

Vijf niet al te hoge binnenkomers, maar drie daarvan zijn toch behoorlijke klassiekers geworden. Op 27 Queen met een bijdrage aan de Highlanders-film, Who wants to live forever. In die film gaat het om een groep mensen die het eeuwige leven hebben, vandaar de thematiek. Logisch dat het bij Freddy Mercury's dood opnieuw van stal is gehaald, maar de tekst is dan wel flink out of context. Wel frappant dat deze hartenkreet van een zeer succesvolle band in de tipparade bleef steken; in de herkansing werd het nummer 7, maar in aller tijden-achtige lijsten doet deze het erg goed. Het is weer supergepassioneerd gezongen door Freddy, met spaarzame en soms ook weer overdonderende muzikale begeleiding, misschien ook wel iets over the top, maar mits spaarzaam genoten, erg mooi.

Op 29 ook een bekende, Don't stand so close to me van The Police. De band is zijn wilde haren hier wel kwijt, de teksten worden belangrijker, de muziek wat ingehoudener. Ik vind de coupletten aanmerkelijk interessanter dan het wat simpele refrein.

Op 34 Kim Wilde, wier carrière wat achteruitgang begon te vertonen. Een probaat middel is dan om een klassieker (liefst sixties soul) een eigentijds geluid te geven en hopla, een hit. Dat werkte in dit geval ook goed, maar erg inspirerend is het niet.

Op 35 de derde klassieker, die hier nog onopvallend op 35 binnenkomt, Fall on me van REM. In mijn top 40 pas hun tweede entry, en pas de eerste die het goed gaat doen. Nog steeds een van hun beste songs, couplet en refrein gaan heel natuurlijk in elkaar over, samenzang, alles werkt prima.

Op 37 komt Genesis binnen, erg laag voor hun doen. Sterker nog, dit is hun minst scorende hit in mijn top 40 (niet scorende songs uitgesloten). De drumcomputer gaat aan, Phil zingt weer passievol als altijd maar het boeit niet erg; waar is de majestueuze melodie? waar de overrompelende toetsen? Jammer maar helaas.

Opvallend deze week is dat In Tua Nua en The The die vorige week op de weg terug waren ineens weer flink wat plaatsen winst boeken.

De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is voor Queen en die vinden we op nummer 8 met Who Wants To Live Forever, de andere nieuweling zijn The Apartments die we met All You Wanted begroeten op nummer 17, een single die ook al in 1984 het daglicht zag.

David Sylvian heeft het zwaar te verduren door te zakken van 8 naar 20 maar de nieuwe prachtsingle Silver Moon zal snel zijn weg vinden hier verwacht ik.

Niet veel mensen hebben Taking the Veil geloof ik. En dan is ie bij jou ook nog eens aan het dalen, daar waar hij bij mij nog steeds stijgt
Een van mijn absolute faves van hem, maar dat zijn er wel meer
Gone To Earth is mijn fave album van m, grijs gedraaid en ja ik ben een van die weinigen die kant B ook geweldig vind Heerlijk om na dat ultrafijne album met die geniale A kant weg te dromen en weg te zweven op die ambientklanken, liefst des avonds laat
Before the Bullfight had ook wel een single mogen zijn, wat een pracht of die zalige gitaar op Wave

Bij mij heeft Taking The Veil op nummer 1 gestaan en bij musician dacht ik ook, dus daar blijf je op achter.......
Bij anderen heeft die ook in de lijst gestaan alleen werden daar de spreekwoordelijke potten niet gebroken met dit nummer

En om je helemaal blij te maken Silver Moon kan zomaar de nieuwe nummer 1 in mijn lijst zijn komende week

Zes binnenkomers, en de hoogste op 28 van Iron Maiden. Dit is ook hun debuut in mijn lijst, en ook hun eerste top 40 hit, en ook nog eens hun grootste hit in mijn lijst, en hun grootste top 40 hit. Dat mag ook wel eens gezegd worden, het is namelijk ook een ijzersterke song, met een fantastische riff en een geweldig refrein. En Bruce Dickinson heeft vanzelfsprekend een fenomenaal stemgeluid.

Op 33 A-ha, dat na drie geweldige singles van het debuutalbum nu I've been losing you brengt als aanjager van hun tweede album Scoundrel days. Het echt bijzondere is er nu wel af, maar dit is wel een pittige song, opnieuw krachtig gezongen en het succes wordt dan ook moeiteloos gecontinueerd.

Op 34 de Nits in hun hoogtijdagen. Cabins heeft een hoog tempo, met opvallende geluiden/instrumenten, maar ook een degelijk liedje. Wel een beetje een vergeten liedje, maar het is niet hun minste.

Op 36 een helemaal vergeten liedje, Limousine, van Duitse band Hubert Kah, met als zanger en groepsleider Hubert Kemler. Het klinkt zoals je zou verwachten van een Duitse synthesizerband uit 1986, maar zonder een sterke melodie.

Op 37 Paul Young met een van zijn mooiere liedjes, Wonderland, melancholiek gezongen en prettig om te beluisteren.

Op 38 het debuut van Nederlandse band I Spy, natuurlijk ook uit de Verrukkelijke 15 geplukt. De band zou nog wat halfsuccesvolle singles uitbrengen, maar deze heb ik sindsdien praktisch nooit meer gehoord, en weet mij nu ook niet te overtuigen.

1. Iron Maiden - Wasted Years
Iron Maiden was al een begrip voor metal-liefhebbers maar ze kwamen zelfs in de top-40. Melodieus met spetterend gitaarwerk en sterk refrein, metal zoals het hoort te zijn.
Cijfer: 9

19. Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk & Jessie Saunders - Love Can't Turn Around
De clip verwijst naar de lange versie, dit is de korte versie. Swingend maar verder en zeker vocaal niet opzienbarend.
Cijfer: 5

24. Depeche Mode - A Question of Time
Eén van de weinige synthipopbands die ook in de 2e helft van de jaren '80 op peil bleven. Typisch Depeche Mode door de zang en de donkere sfeer.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. In Tua Nua - Seven Into The Sea
Een band die ik vergeten was, doet mij wat denken aan Siouxie & the Banshees en ook een tikkeltje U2. Die folkinslag met de viool maakt de passionele song toch wel vrij apart.
Cijfer: 8

26. A-Ha - I've Been Losing You
De krachtige en toonvaste zang is steeds een sterkte toef hij A-Ha. Aanstekelijke en gestroomlijnde europop met rockinslag.
Cijfer: 7,5

27. Steve Winwood - Freedom Overspill
Dat drumwerk en blazers vind ik te blikkerig klinken maar daarbuiten is het een behoorlijke song waarbij ook hier de uitstekende, soulvolle zang het nummer in de hoogte tilt.
Cijfer: 7

28. Nat Augustin - Ego
Kende ik niet (meer), plastic soul dat mij weinig kan bekoren. Te eentonig en te mechanisch.
Cijfer: 4

29. Paul Young - Wonderland
Deze man heeft wel een mooie stem, jammer dat hij na de succesvolle jaren '80 is weggezakt. Degelijke begeleiding ook met sfeervolle, net niet te overheersende synths. Naar het einde wat bombastischer.
Cijfer: 7,5

30. James Brown - Gravity
Dé inspiratiebron voor vele zwarte artiesten, anno 1986 niet meer opzienbarend maar het swint als de neten.
Cijfer: 7

De verwijzing Jessie Saunders klopt niet (op de site van de Top/Tip 40), het is Darryl Pandy die de vocals voor zijn rekening nam.

Ongebrijpelijk trouwens dat dit nummer door verder niemand hier wordt opgepikt. Absoluut een van de (chicago house) klassiekers van dat jaar. Onbegrijpelijk misschien ook weer niet, de smaak van mijn mede topic gebruikers kennende. Maar blijft wel jammer.
