Commodores - Going to the Bank
18. Hun laatste hit, geloof ik. Grijpt enigszins terug naar de funk waarbij ook een beetje rap voorkomt maar de soul is wat weggeëbd, hun beginperiode is toch wel de beste.
Cijfer: 6

19. Five Star - Rain Or Shine
Poppy single met iets te kazige synths en ook de stem is mij iets te geknepen. Aardig maar niet opzienbarend in die zin dat je het na zoveel jaren nog vaak zal draaien.
Cijfer: 5,5

23. Tina Turner - Two People
Misschien wat steriel geproduceerd maar verder een best genietbare song als je van haar stemgeluid houdt.
Cijfer: 6,5

24. Anita Baker - Sweet Love
Dit is ook een meer dan behoorlijks song, alleszins met gevoel gezongen. Een soberder productie had de sfeer nog verhoogd.
Cijfer: 7

25. Gerard Joling & Randy Crawford - Everybody Needs A Little Rain
Een opvallend duet waarbij de stemmen wonderwel bij elkaar passen. Opzienbarend is het nummer niet maar Gerard Joling weet zowaar meer soul in zijn zang te brengen al is het aandeel van Randy Crawford groter.
Cijfer: 6

26. Wham! - Where Did Your Heart Go?
Een minder bekend maar zeker niet slecht nummer van Wham!, klinkt minder vrolijk dan de vorige singles en lijkt de voorbode van de solocarrière van George Michael.

27. Hans de Booij - Ik Hou van Alle Vrouwen
Op Annabelle na wellicht zijn bekendste nummer mede door de tekst die blijft hangen, het ritme vind ik erg aanstekelijk.

28. Bob Geldof - This Is The World Calling
Geen grootse zanger maar de tekst en puike productie inclusief dat koor weten het nummer op te krikken terwijl de gitaren voor een wat dreigende sfeer zorgen.
Cijfer: 7,5

29. David Bowie - When the Wind Blows
Een mindere Bowie-song waarbij de drums afbreuk doen aan de sfeer. Lijkt mij ook duidelijk als soundtrack bedoeld.
Cijfer: 6,5

30. Modern Talking - Geronimo's Cadillac
Verschilt nauwelijks van hun vorige singles al komt hier een wat steviger gitaar in voor maar deze band is overduidelijk een kind van die tijd.

Een nek aan nek race tussen de Pet Shop Boys en The Stranglers valt in het voordeel uit van de Pet Shop Boys al is het verschil minimaal te noemen met 1 punt.

Bruce Springsteen met zijn The E Street Band komt binnen knallen op nummer 7 met zijn geweldige cover van War, het origineel is overigens van The Temptations.

De overige nieuwkomers zijn te vinden op nummer 14, 15 en 19.

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush gaan werkelijk als een TGV door de lijst heen door te stijgen van 20 naar 3!
Ook The Nits blijven het goed doen en zijn inmiddels op 4 te vinden.

Opvallend is de vrije val van A-Ha die vorige week nog hoopgevend stegen van 12 naar 5 en deze week ineens op 17 te vinden zijn

Er komt vooral kwaliteitspop/rock binnen, blijkbaar is daar heel veel van in 1986. De "oudjes" kunnen nog prima mee en de experimentele jongeren hebben hun donsveren er voor ingeruild.

Dat betekent, verdere verdieping van de muziek voor R.E.M. en Talk Talk. Genesis vindt de portemonnee en de notering belangrijker dan de symfonische klanken en probeert al enige jaren het nuttige met het aangename te verenigen.
Als de uitkomst daarvan lelijk zou zijn geweest, zou ik het zeggen.
Maar de band wist toen met dergelijke muziek grote groepen fans aan zich te binden, die genoegen namen met de pop/rock richting in de tijd.

Maar het leidde wel tot kritiek in de "kwaliteitspers" die, voor hetzelfde vergrijp, inmiddels ook hun pijlen op de Simple Minds hadden gericht. Dat kwam ook niet meer goed.

Ik heb geen moeite met zowel Land of confusion als Ghostdancing. Het is natuurlijk altijd nog maar de vraag of je als band vooraf, bij opnames van nieuwe muziek, bewust kunt kiezen voor grote verkopen en een grote aanhang.

1. Elvis Costello - I Want You
Begint zoet en onschuldig maar slaat dan over in radeloosheid met een beklemmende, zelfs grimmige sfeer alsof een verlangen niet ingelost kan worden. Grote klasse!
Cijfer: 9,5

13. Janet Jackson - Control
Samen met Madonna dé vrouwelijke ster van 1986 met een videoclip waarin veel werk is gestoken. Op alle gebied de vrouwelijke tegenhanger van haar broer Michael behalve haar vocale kwaliteiten, die zijn een stuk minder.
Cijfer: 7

16. Eurythmics - Miracle Of Love
Annie Lennox vind ik een betere zangeres met meer soul in haar zang en ook met dit rustige nummer - vrij zoet maar met donkere ondertoon - weet ze raad mee.
Cijfer: 8

19. Dolly Dots - This Girl
Heeft meer power dan hun vorige hits al blijft het nog vrij poppy. Had een hogere hitnotering verdiend, hun populariteit was toen tanende.

24. Spandau Ballet - Through the Barricades
Een vrij zoete ballad maar smaakvol en niet zonder spanning. Wellicht één van hun beste nummers al was ook deze band op de terugweg.

25. Boston - Amanda
Een comebackhit van Boston na 8 jaar stilte. Een rockballad die er nog mag zijn met degelijk stemmen- en gitaarwerk en een refrein die blijft hangen.
Cijfer: 7

26. Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia
Dit duo weet met hun hits de gemiddelde hitparadepop te overstijgen door de aparte ijle zang en de nodige diepgang en sfeer. Dit is ook een voorbeeld hoe de jaren '80-productie wel prima kan zijn.
Cijfer: 8,5

27. Benny Neyman - Superstar
Op zich geen slecht nummer maar ik hoor Benny Neyman liever in sobere luisterliedjes, daar komt hij beter tot zijn recht. Hij lijkt steeds een weg te zoeken tussen de kleinkunst/chanson en de commerciële schlager.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Kool & The Gang - Victory
Swingend en funky maar niets nieuws onder de zon, het lijkt een herhaling van zetten en hun succes is (begrijpelijk) ook af aan het nemen.
Cijfer: 5,5

29. Anita - Into The Night
Dit nummer (sterk geënt op de A.O.R.) van ex-Dolly Dots-zangeres is op alle vlakken te doorsnee en zelfs vrij banaal om hoge ogen te gooien. Het werd dan ook geen hit, hier heeft het hitpubliek bij het rechte eind.

30. The Stranglers - Always The Sun
Ook The Stranglers hebben betere tijden gekend maar dit vrij gladde nummer mag er zeker zijn door de rinkelende gitaar in het midden en het erg aanstekelijk refrein. Had een grotere hit moeten zijn, hier heeft het hitpubliek niet bij het rechte eind.

Dat Fall on me zijn nummer 1-positie zou kwijtraken, was wel duidelijk, maar dat hij meteen naar 4 zou zakken, is wel erg hard. Positiever nieuws op 5, want daar staat Silver moon, vanaf 18!

Op 15 de Simple Minds met Ghost dancing, die nog steeds met een succesvolle reeks singles bezig zijn, zonder dat het te commercieel wordt. Ghost dancing klinkt weer gepassioneerd en fel, maar muzikaal wordt het wel wat vlakker.

Op 28 komt Spandau Ballet met een erg sterke single, na wat mindere singles, de ballad Through the barricades, dat erg fraai opbouwt en uitmondt in lang instrumentaal extro. Uiteraard wat te zoet voor sommigen, maar niet voor mij.

Op 30 covert Bruce Springsteen het anti-oorlogslied War (Edwin Starr), en dat klinkt zoals je mag verwachten: krachtig.

Op 32 alweer een sterke single van David Bowie, afkomstig van de tekenfilm When the wind blows, weer prachtig gezongen en door de tekst ook ontroerend.

Op 38 een wat vergeten single van Ultravox. Ze hebben wat blazers toegevoegd en klinken nu wat funkier, maar de stem van Midge Ure maakt Same old story toch wel tot typisch Ultravox.

De donkere dagen voor Kerst kunnen prima worden gevuld met Chris Rea, Fatal Flowers, Karn & Sylvian, Crowded House en vooral The Eurythmics. Het is opmerkelijk hoe goed en stemmig Lennox en Stewart nu weer voor de dag komen.
Fatal Flowers schaar ik er nu onder, omdat uit mijn hoofd er meer vuurwerk in het nummer zat. Herbeluistering viel een beetje tegen.

En last but not least Sparks. In 1974 fraai begonnen. In 2017 een zeer sterk album. Maar in 1986 was ik niet alleen niet zo heel erg enthousiast over hun muzikale prestaties, vermoedelijk zaten ze ook een beetje in mijn vergetelhoek. Nog vind ik het niet hun sterkste periode maar op naam weten ze nu dan toch een eind te komen.

Op 27 de eerste solohit van Bob Geldof. Met This is the world calling zet hij zijn rol van wereldverbeteraar voort. Eerlijk gezegd vind ik er nu weinig aan.

Op 28 proberen The Icicle Works het nog eens, nu met het vlotte meezingbare Who do you want for your love. Een prettige sound is het wel, maar ze komen niet in de buurt van hun euforische Love is a wonderful colour.

Op 33 Tina Turner met Two people. Tina is een zangeres die vaker niet dan wel mijn top 40 haalt; het hangt gewoon van de compositie af. En Two people is een mooi lief liedje dat ik liever hoor dan het schreeuwerige The best.

Op 34 het debuut van Nadieh. De productie is (uiteraard) zwaar eighties, wel een internationaal geluid. De ingehouden stemmige zang maakt het onderscheidend van andere songs uit deze tijd.

En op 37 The Eurythmics die met The miracle of love alvast een voorschot lijken te nemen op Kerstmis. Wel knap hoe deze band zo verschillende sferen en sounds kon neerzetten, en meestal overtuigend.

1. Simple Minds - Ghostdancing
De zoveelste single van Once Upon a Time. Simple Minds klinkt hier nog steeds gedreven maar de song zelf is wat vlakker.

23. Bruce Springsteen - War
Oorspronkelijk van Edwin Starr (zie week 33 van 1970), de cover van Bruce Springsteen is even krachtig en de song blijft steeds relevant.
Cijfer: 8

24. Patti LaBelle - Something Special (Is Gonna Happen Tonight)
Deze zangers ken ik vooral van Lady Marmalade en dat is een soulklassieker. Dit nummer beklijft veel minder wegens te doorsnee en de eigentijdse productie werkt niet mee. Haar zang komt ook hier schreeuweriger over.
Cijfer: 4,5

25. The Housemartins - Think For a Minute
Er is ook een akoestische versie maar ik neem aan dat dit de single-versie is. Hoe dan ook, prachtig en steeds actueel nummer met heerlijke zang en prima productie.

26. New London Chorale featuring Vicky Brown - Stay with me till The Morning
Wij zitten reeds in de kerststemming getuige dit nummer. Niet erg bijzonder nummer maar wel sfeervol.

27. Maarten Peters & The Dream - Take It Now
Geen clip gevonden.

28. Rosie Vela - Magic Smile
Lang niet meer gehoord maar dit heeft wel de tand des tijds goed doorstaan mede door de natuurlijke en heldere productie. Wat bluesy en licht jazzy popsong met mystiek tintje en soepele zang.

29. Chico DeBarge - Talk To Me
Nu weer een nummer dat alleen rond 1986 een hit kon worden. Swingen doet het wel dank zij het funky ritme.

30. Billy Idol - To Be A Lover
Ook deze hit van ex-punker behoort tot de categorie aanvaardbaar mede dankzij de jazzy toets maar een groots zanger is hij niet.

Natuurlijk moet deze ook vermeld worden. Geweldig nummer (wat andere users zeggen) met memorabel refrein al vind ik There Is a Light That Never Goes Out nog iets beter (maar dat werd geen hit).
