Daar ga ik dus niet op wachten

En mits smaakvol gedaan, wil ik best wel af en toe vallen voor een rocksmartlap van de Scorpions. Mijn voordeel is dat ik het nooit over de top vaak heb gehoord. Dat houdt het beheersbaar. Maar er staat best een aardig stukje gitaar op en de melodie is niet slecht.

Genesis begint ook in 1987 aan een nieuwe ronde singles van het album Invisible Touch. Tonight x 3 is dan zeker niet het slechtste wat ze er van hebben afgehaald.

Welkom bij weer een nieuwe weeklijst Andermaal een nieuwe nummer 1 deze week. En het is niemand anders dan het lichtje geworden zal niemand verbazen Mooi te zien dat deze hier ook de lijst aanvoert.
A-ha is de runner-up. Zullen ze nog een poging wagen naar de koppositie? Siouxsie stijgt lekker, evenals Julian Cope waar Pet Shop Boys weer de grootste daler is.
Omdat chartsmaster zijn lijst flink ververst heeft kukelen er een flink aantal uit en komen er dan natuurlijk evenveel weer in
De hoogste nieuwe is voor The Smithereens die een mooie samenwerking hebben met Suzanne Vega. Onderaan zien we een flinke rij nieuwe namen, alhoewel nieuw
UB40 komt met een van hun bekendste songs. Gary Moore en John Farnham vooral kennen we natuurlijk ook allemaal. R.E.M. komt met een song die gezongen wordt door Mike Mills. Hüskür Dü zorgt voor de alternatieve rock deze week en The Smiths komen al weer met een nieuwe single en staan deze week zelfs 3 x in de lijst. Het moet niet gekker worden

John Farnham verovert in de vierde week al de koppositie, waardoor het ook kandidaat The Smithereens aftroeft.
Opvallend is dat Silver moon in zijn vijftiende week weer gaat stijgen, een erg zeldzaam verschijnsel wat erop duidt dat ik toen al inzag dat de plaat veel meer punten had verdiend.

Weer vijf binnenkomers op bescheiden posities. De hoogste is de debuutsingle van Curiosity Killed the Cat, en daarmee ook meteen hun beste single, Down to Earth. Vooral hoe de zanger met het eerste couplet binnenvalt, is geweldig. Vergeleken daarmee is het refrein wat gewoontjes, maar aangenaam genoeg.

Op 33 The Mission met hun bekende sound. Wasteland is een typische song, met redelijk wat hitpotentie, maar in NL werkt dat natuurlijk niet zo.

Op 34 Level 42, dat in de jaren 80 altijd veel hitpotentie had, zo ook Running in the family, dat weer swingt als vanouds, maar ook een verhaaltje vertelt met jeugdherinneringen van de componist. Hoewel ik vaak naar de tekst heb geluisterd, wordt het mij niet erg duidelijk wat de strekking ervan is. Maar dat zal de meeste (Nederlandse) luisteraars ook een zorg zijn.

Op 35 gaat The Style Council met zijn tijd mee, en zit het nu al dicht tegen de discosound aan. Het refrein is wel wat simpel en ik vind het nu ook niet zo sterk.

Op 38 dan nog een NL top 40-nummer 1 hit van George Michael en Aretha Franklin, een sterk nummer met grote hitpotentie, twee fantastische zangers en een ouderwets swingend Amerikaans geluid. Toch gaat het bij mij maar matig scoren, want het pakt mij niet.

Solo-single van de zanger van de Australische band Little River Band maar het heeft wel een Schots tintje. Wat bombastisch paar prima krachtige zang en het refrein blijft hoe dan ook hangen.
Cijfer: 7

25. Nana Mouskouri - Why Worry
Een zoet nummer van Dire Straits en het is dan ook geschikt voor Nana Mouskouri. Niettemin brengt ze het vocaal meer dan behoorlijk vanaf.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Swing Out Sister - Surrender
De productie is mij te glad maar het nummer zelf is smaakvol, licht jazzy, swingend en met sterke vocalen.
Cijfer: 7

27. Vesta Williams - Once Bitten Twice Shy
De mechanische, plastieken sound is ook hier een minpunt. Vocaal valt het wel mee, zij heeft beslist soul in haar body maar in dit nummer met zulke productie komt dat niet helemaal naar voren.

28. Members Only - Partytime
Dit is de 12 inch-versie, een andere versie kon ik niet vinden. Het is geschikt voor de dansvloer maar verder is het te standaard en doet mij het teveel aan eerdere nummers denken.

29. Anita Meyer - Now And Forever
Geen clip gevonden.

30. I've Got the Bullets - Nighttrain
Dit zit ook weer in de categorie 'kan gaan' maar ook hier is de productie te tijdsgebonden en springt het nummer nog melodisch noch tekstueel eruit.

Welkom bij andermaal een nieuwe weeklijst! Helaas kunnen we deze week geen nieuwe nummer 1 begroeten, wat een pech Dat zou zomaar nog even kunnen duren... Julian Cope maakt geen lichtzinnige sprong naar plek 2, waar A-ha een stapje terug doet. Siouxsie stijgt gestadig door, evenals UB40, Shoplifters en Hüskür Dü. Daler van de week zijn de Pretenders, die er nog net in staan.
We verwelkomen deze week 4 nieuwelingen, met als hoogste Surrender van Swing Out Sister, die kort geleden Breakout hier nog hadden. Een wat rustiger track, maar net zo mooi en even soulvol.
Dan volgt World Party met de schitterende klassieker Ship of Fools, iedereen kent m wel. Karl Wallinger van World Party zat in The Waterboys tot en met This Is the Sea. Het altijd fijne The The komt weer met een single van Infected. Dit keer een stevige track met een lekker tempo en vocals van Neneh Cherry. We sluiten de lijst af met op de laatste plaats ex aequo de titeltrack van het gelijknamige album Notorious van Duran Duran. Een heerlijke track vind ik! Een beetje een stijlbreuk voor de band in die tijd, maar ze waren dan ook met 3 overgebleven, na het vertrek van 2 Taylors. Lekker funkay! Tot volgende week!

Na het thema Party in januari is voor februari het thema "typische jaren 80 bands" blijkbaar.

Simply Mick ben ik met It's only love en verder bewust gaan meemaken, ten tijde van The right thing ging het nog aan het puberale pureshores leven voorbij. Vreemd genoeg vind ik die pre 1989 nummers allemaal een stuk beter verteerbaar achteraf, met The right thing en Come to my aid als echte toppers.

Voor Duran Duran geen tijd voor haarlak geshop bij het Kruidvat want die treden 2x op deze week. Skin trade zou weleens volgende week aan kop kunnen gaan, een absoluut niet platgedraaid nummer en wederom met die swing van Notorious erin.
Level 42 sluit het trio nieuwen af, Running in the family is poppy en speels en de groep kan veel beter natuurlijk, maar dit verdient zeker een plekje.
