Op 17 knalt Ad Visser binnen, de presentator van Toppop, die een geweldige zanger gestrikt heeft voor zijn song No news from the western frontier, Gary Brooker. De synthesizers klinken dreigend en somber, de zang is ook gedragen en donker, nee, vrolijk is het niet, maar wel erg mooi.

Op 22 de eerste single van Simply Red's tweede album, The right thing. De band swingt meer dan ooit te voren, Mick Hucknal zingt de sterren van de hemel, en er zit ook nog een mooi vals einde in. Een van de beste songs van deze band.

Op 27 scoren The Scorpions zomaar hun eerste top 40-hit, en wat voor één! Still loving you is een archetypische rock ballad, traag van opbouw maar des te meeslepender naar het einde toe. Ik kan me wel indenken dat niet iedereen dit trekt, maar als je het niet te vaak hoort, is het een geweldige plaat.

Op 33 doet Tina Turner nog steeds mee, ditmaal (opnieuw) met een David Bowie-song, Girls. Ook hier een dramatische ballad, misschien wel wat te zwaar voor het grote publiek, maar ik hoor dit liever dan iets als Simply the best.

Op 38 nog een oudgediende, Iggy Pop, die met Real wild child pas zijn tweede top 40-hit scoort, 10 jaar na Lust for life. Het jonge honden- Sturm-und-Dranggevoel is er nu wel af, maar het swingt nog steeds en verdient een plekje in de huidige lijst.

1. Level 42 - Running In The Family
Level 42 swingt als vanouds maar klinkt hier meer poppy zonder aan kwaliteit in te boeten en daar heeft de vakkundige en smaakvolle instrumentatie veel mee te maken.
Cijfer: 8

17. Kool Moe Dee - Go See The Doctor
Hiphop kan voor mij als het energiek en swingend is. Dat mis ik in dit nummer, het heeft een sloom ritme en is niet aanstekelijk genoeg.
Cijfer: 4,5

24. Danny De Munk - Amsterdam, Laat Je Niet Kisten
Danny De Munk heeft nu baard in de keel en probeert hier krampachtig Koos Alberts na te doen. Productioneel is het ook een flop.

25. The Bangles - Walking Down Your Street
Ongetwijfeld de leukste meidengroep in de jaren '80, hun singles klinken nog steeds fris, spontaan en charmant en dat is ook hier het geval.
Cijfer: 8,5

26. Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight
Rock die voor mij te gladgestreken is, ook te clichématig, typisch voor die AOR, een jaren '80-stroming waar ik niet wild voor ben.

27. Sheila E. - Hold Me
Een matige zangeres die dankzij Prince bekend is geworden. Deze zeurderige ballad kan mij bovendien nauwelijks boeien laat staan ontroeren.
Cijfer: 4

28. Midnight Star - Midas Touch
Wederom een nummer dat te weinig memorabel en te tijdsgebonden is om een evergreen te worden al swingt het wel.

29. Gary Moore - Over the Hills and Far Away
Gary Moore is een briljant gitarist en dit episch nummer met folky inslag is zeker het beluisteren waard, jammer dat dit nummer door een glad AOR-sausje is overgegoten.

30. Peter Koelewijn - De Loop Van Een Geweer
Dit is schaamteloze jatterij van Nightshift van The Commodores maar tekstueel trekt het mij nog net over de streep.

De man biedt met zijn singles zelden teleurstellingen en er kan altijd op hem worden gerekend: Gary Moore. Ouderwetse degelijkheid in een tijd dat dat niet meer zo vanzelfsprekend is.

Maar The Cult biedt een mooi modern tegenwicht met een prima 7" en de potentie voor een hoge notering!
En eindelijk eens een mooie opname van een Paul Simon track van het album Graceland. Mooi klinken ja, dat is één van die dingen!

Tijd voor een weeklijssie Helaas deze week geen lijst van chartsmaster, daarom eenmalig zijn vorige, hopelijk is ie er volgende week weer bij
De ten ton truck dendert nog even vrolijk door, the pleasure and privilege is all mine, I must say
Julian Cope handhaaft zich op 2 en World Party maakt een jump van formaat tot op het podium!
Shoplifters gaat ook gestaag naar boven en daler van de week is Red Box die na lang bovenin te hebben gebivakkeerd echt een flinke duikeling maken.
We verwelkomen 3 nieuwelingen deze week. Als hoogste het Duitse The Scorpions met een hit van jewelste, iedereen moet deze kennen. Die paar grote hits van deze band kon ik als kind zeer waarderen, maar nu nauwelijks nog meer.
pureshores zal verheugd zijn dat zijn curieuze kat eindelijk bijval krijgt Een band die ik nog niet kende. Fijn nummer wel, met die typische jaren 80 smoothness. Een beetje een mix van Spandau Ballet meets ABC meets Level 42.
Als laatste een single van Simply Red, deze kende ik zelf ook nog niet of in ieder geval deed het geen belletje rinkelen. Een midtempo laidback song met klanken op de achtergrond die een beetje aan Prefab Sprout doen denken en dat is natuurlijk nooit verkeerd

Een flinke schoonmaak deze week, met zeven nieuwe noteringen. Op 19 de geweldige debuutsingle van World Party, het bandje van Karl Wallinger (ex-The Waterboys). Ik denk niet dat er veel liedjes zijn die je met de eerste regel al meerdere lagen van beleving in trekken. En het blijft meeslepend. De tekst is een kritische kijk op onze maatschappij, die blind richting de afgrond vaart. Gelukkig doen we dat al een heel tijdje, en is de afgrond nog niet in zicht .

Dan twee typische eighties-platen. Op 23 one hit wonder Two People, met het swingende Heaven, dat mij bij vlagen deed denken aan The Lotus Eaters (qua melodie). Veel eighties-achitger dan dit heb je ze niet.

En op 24 The Ward Brothers, ook al een one hit wonder, die iets subtieler swingt, en dankzij de lyrics ook wat meer gevoel erin legt. Wat mij betreft zwaar onderschat.

Op 31 dan weer een heel bekende naam, Duran Duran, dat voor mij veel leuker is dan voorganger Notorious. Skin trade heeft een heerljke groove (met dank aan de productie van Nile Rodgers) en een sterk refrein.

Op 35 komen George Michael en Aretha Franklin opnieuw binnen, na een weekje afwezigheid. Echt ver gaat het toch niet komen.

Op 36 komt Barclay James Harvest binnen, albumgroep bij uitstek, maar een enkele keer scoorden ze ook een (bijna) hit. He said love heeft een christelijke tekst, de EO had hem gerust kunnen draaien. De coupletten hebben een fraaie melodie, het refrein is wat minder sterk.

En op 37 vinden we The Blow Monkeys met hun laatste hit, waarop we hun sound geperfectioneerd nog eens mogen smaken. Gitaartjes, scheurende sax en een vrolijke melodie.

Ik plaats al wekelijks mijn lijstje van 1993, maar in 1987 bestond mijn lijst ook al. Dus die zal ik vanaf nu ook plaatsen. Ik beperk me tot de top 50, want in die tijd bestond mijn lijst uit een top 50 die ik twee keer per week maakte en die ik later heb omgezet naar een wekelijkse top 100. Het gevolg is dat de nummers 51 t/m 100 meestal bestaan uit zakkende platen, dus niet erg interessant.

Vrij aanstekelijke en dansbare single door met meer funky ritme maar de soulvolle zang blijft centraal staan. Hun hits in de beginperiode kan ik nog steeds waarderen.

15. Steve "Silk" Hurley - Jack Your Body
Eén van de eerste househits, doet mij nu niets. Swingen doet het niet en een aanstekelijke melodie en baslijn mis ik ook.

16. Tina Turner - Girls
Tina Turner heeft beslist een aparte stem die zij ook hier ten volle weet te benutten en het is zeker een behoorlijke song maar het is jammer van de wat te gladde productie dat haar soul een tikkeltje doet verwateren.

25. Scorpions - Still Loving You
Een pakkende powerballad van Duitse hardrockband, prima geproduceerd en met veel overgave gezongen.

27. Steve Winwood - Back In The High Life Again
Zijn soulvolle zang is zijn grootste troef, verder is dat een aangenaam relaxt nummer, lichtjes folkgetint met een refrein die blijft hangen.

28. Fun Fun - Baila Bolero
Dit is daarentegen wegwerpmateriaal met erg vlakke zang een mechanische productie die typisch is voor deze tijd.

29. Toto - Without Your Love
Een vakkundige maar zoutloze song waarbij ook hier de aalgladde productie storend is, ik mis vooral passie en emotie al is het refrein niet onaardig.

30. Ad Visser & Gary Brooker - No News from the Western Frontier
Sfeervol is het wel maar ook wat klinisch met slechte drums. Kan wel dienst doen als soundtrack en de zang van Gary Brooker is prima.

Op 19 februari 1987 verscheen er een nieuwe single van Prince, Sign o' the Times. Veel hoger heeft Prince voor mij niet meer gereikt. Het trio albums Purple Rain, Parade en Sign o' the Times dat van '84 tot '87 werd gelanceerd is voor mij het beste wat Prince heeft gemaakt.
Ik was er toen nog wat fanatieker in dan nu; ik moet bekennen het album zelf geruime tijd niet meer te hebben beluisterd en het doet me ook iets minder.

Een verademing dat de Erven Prince het nummer (weer) op youtube hebben geplaatst, mag ook worden gezegd.

Deze week weer eens een heel andere weeklijst. Wij begroeten AngeloV als deelnemer en bij chartsmaster lijkt het licht een beetje gedoofd te zijn Lagere puntenaantallen voor sommige tracks en hogere voor anderen daardoor. Het lichtje blijft nog steeds bovenaan, net voor Julian Cope. De megajump van de week is voor Simply Red dat World Party van het podium stoot. UB40, The Scorpions en de curieuze kat stijgen lekker, waar Shoplifters door de verdeeldheid daler van de week is . Maar liefst 6 nieuwelingen deze week!
Als hoogste Duran Duran met het fenomenale Skin Trade, helemaal te genieten in de albumversie en pureshores weet vast nog wel een lekkere remix Daarna volgt Sandra met haar kenmerkende stem en die typische 80s synths in de mooie ballad Loreen. Genesis komt weer ns langs met een single van hun hitalbum Invisible Touch. Bijna 9 minuten deze track, maar ook bij mij overbekend, maar bij de heren hier staat vast een single edit in de lijst. Dan Timex Social Club voor het eerst hier geloof ik. Ik kende het niet, maar het klinkt wel lekker deze 80s black funk. Mick Karn komt vervolgens binnen met een geweldige track in samenwerking met David Sylvian. Op hetzelfde album staat ook nog het mooie When Love Walks In, ook met Sylvian. We sluiten de boel af met het bekendste nummer van het stel denk ik en ook een van de bekendsten van Level 42 zelf. Altijd fijn om deze 80s kraker te horen

John Farnham al 4 weken op 1, maar nu ernstig bedreigd door Simply Red en World Party.

Op 22 komen The Smiths binnen met hun nieuwe single Shoplifters. Voor de duidelijkheid: There is a light zal nooit in mijn top 40 verschijnen, omdat ik het destijds nooit op de radio gehoord heb en ik ook betwijfel of het (in Nederland) een single is geweest zo tussen Ask en Shoplifters in (er zit ook geen gat tussen deze twee releases). Wel kan ik volmondig erkennen dat Shoplifters veel minder sterk is dan There is a light; het lijkt zelfs een merkwaardige singlekeuze, met een vrij zwak refrein; niet echt het anthem dat de titel belooft. Maar nog altijd ruim voldoende dankzij de intrinsieke Smiths-kwaliteit.

Op 25 weer eens een single uit de oude doos, ditmaal opnieuw uitgebracht dankzij de film met dezelfde titel, Stand by me. Het is een klassieke soulsong van Ben E. King, zeer herkenbare muziek en fraaie tekst.

Op 28 het debuut van het blanke raptrio Beastie Boys, met stevige rockinslag. De tekst is opstandig bedoeld, en in de jaren 80 was dat vast ook zo, maar nu klinkt het toch meer aandoenlijk. Grappig maar wel wat gedateerd.

Op 30 gaat Eric Clapton nog steeds met zijn tijd mee, met een toetsengedomineerde song; gelukkig heeft het ook een overtuigend refrein, gedreven zang en natuurlijk wat stevig gitaarwerk.

Op 34 Carly Simon, een singer songwriter die al heel lang meegaat maar met Coming around again een ontroerende song aflevert, met scherpe tekst en diep doorvoelde vocalen. Zij mag nog wel vaker terugkomen.

Het is maar wat je onder debuut verstaat. Fight For Your Right was inmiddels al hun 4e van 7 singles van hun "debuutalbum".

Met 'debuut' bedoel ik 'debuut in mijn beleving' .

Het leek mij overigens ook typisch een echte debuutsingle, maar dat is het blijkbaar niet.
