Marc Almond verovert de eerste plaats met zijn Gene Pitney cover (die op de singleversie zelf ook meezingt).
Vijf binnenkomers; de hoogste is een zogenaamde 'foute' cover van twee songs: Baby I love your way van Peter Frampton, en Free bird van Lynyrd Skynyrd. Beide songs zijn van alle karakteristieken ontdaan, het resultaat klinkt superzoet en eh... best lekker.
Op 35 laat Tanita Tikaram zich van haar somberste en soberste kant horen. Op 36 een echte danceklassieker. Het swingt behoorlijk! En op 37 alweer de opvolger van Big fun, Good life van Inner City, even aanstekelijk.

Vijf nieuwe binnenkomers maar liefst in een tijd dat de Top 30 al zo vol en sterk is. R.E.M. komt, terwijl de vorige nog stijgt in de Top 10, al met een nieuwe. Misschien dat dit te maken had met het uitzendschema van de tv-serie waar dit het liedje van was. Verder een hele fijne van Nik Kershaw die aan het eind van de voor hem succesvolle jaren '80 nog een hit wil scoren, een emotionele van Mike van Genesis wat hem een eerste plek in de Amerikaanse single lijsten opleverde, iets wat hem met Genesis niet lukte. De hitsingle What i Am van de vrouw van Paul Simon komt nu pas overwaaien terwijl het in november 1988 al op single verscheen, ze heeft betere maar deze is zeker niet verkeerd en als laatste zien we een typische Big Country single dus dat heeft altijd een bepaalde kwaliteit.

Grappig hoe de 4 singles van dat album alle 4 zo compleet anders zijn. Jammer dat ze voor hun 2e ronde in 1990 een Technotronic kloon werden

week 3 van 1989 met een bijna stationaire top 7, daar direct onder wel een paar flinke stijgers die vast van plan zijn de boel wat om te gooien. Ook nog 4 binnenkomers.
Als hoogste The Scene met een cover van Madonna. Ik hoorde het destijds in de Miniparade, had verder nog nooit van de band gehoord wat niet zo gek was want bekend waren ze nog niet. Dat heeft deze single ook niet echt veranderd. Het is natuurlijk het bekende geluid van The Scene en bewijst dat de band zeker lekker kan rocken maar ook dat Thé geen slechte keus maakte door gewoon Nederlands te gaan zingen.
Daaronder de rockballad van Poison, tja rockballads waren in, oa door een radioprogramma dat zich daar in specialiseerde en ook verzamel lp's uitbracht onder die titel.
Dan de nieuwe van Debbie, de eerste single van het tweede album. In navolging van grote hit Foolish Beat begint het dit keer met een mooie ballad. In de US met succes, haar tweede nummer 1 hit (ha, bij mij heeft ze er al 4!). In Nederland bleef het bij tipparade.
En dan nog mr Houston, al had die daar op dat moment nog geen idee van, Bobby Brown met een echt 80s geluid. Ook dit werd een nummer 1 in de US trouwens.

Daar kun je mij nu helemaal wild mee krijgen, zo'n single van de Stranglers.
Zes jaar geleden was dat ook al zo, dus dat gaat niet meer veranderen. Veel mensen kreeg ik niet mee, met deze remix van de originele single uit 1977. Hopelijk verandert dat deze editie!

Niets anders dan de beste singles, als je je beperkt tot een Top 20. Dus XTC, R.E.M. en Thomas Dolby, veel beter kun je ze niet krijgen.

Ik zat mij overigens al eerder af te vragen of het nogmaals spelen van het 1989 topic zou leiden tot verveling, routineus luisteren of toch weer een mooi feest der herkenning. Maar dat laatste is gelukkig het geval.
Zijn we klaar, dan beginnen we gewoon opnieuw.

Welkom bij de derde weeklijst van 1989, gebaseerd op 8 nieuwe lijstjes.
Met voor de spanning weer een nieuwe nummer 1 in de vorm van het gelegenheidsduo Marc Almond en Gene Pitney, dat REM naar de 2e plaats dwingt. De top 3 wordt wederom aangevuld met New Order en daarna is het een stuk dalen in punten. Duran Duran en Marillion zijn nieuwe aanvallers op weg naar de top 3. Een hele rits vrouwen is inmiddels ook begonnen met de beklimming van de top 10.

Enige rust is er op het new entry gebied na de wilde eerste 2 weken, slechts 2 deze week.

Op 19 vinden we de nieuwe Julian Cope, zoals ik vorige week had voorspeld.
5 'o Clock world is hele andere Cope koek dan de vorige Charlotte Anne en Cope springt, zwiert en rockt zich in een ruime 3,5 minuut rond waar ook nog een Hammond orgel mee komt doen. Eens kijken of dit ook richtig de top 10 koerst.
De andere new entry is voor Tanita Tikaram, die ook iets heel anders doet dan haar vorige single.
Cathedral song is weer een stuk opbeurender en de zangeres met de koffiebruine stem biedt hoop en bijval na het wat melodramatische Twist in my sobriety.

Opnieuw 50/50 dus maar voor week 4 wordt het veel moeilijker. De fiches gaan deze keer op Diesel Park West-All the myths on Sunday en een re-entry voor Four letter word van Kim Wilde.

Kirsty Later dit jaar gaat ze nog wel scoren overigens, deze kende ik destijds niet.

Musica é bereikt de tweede plek in de negende week, een knappe prestatie!

Vier binnenkomers, de hoogste van de Simple Minds op 18, één van de vele songs die door Nelson Mandela geïnspireerd zijn. Ik bemerk nu pas dit de dubbele A-kant is van Belfast Child, dat uiteindelijk veel bekender is geworden. Vanaf volgende week noteer ik deze song in mijn oude schrift ook als Belfast Child, dat ik ook veel beter vind: een geweldige emotionele song, waarvan ik me overigens ook de bedenkingen kan voorstellen die sommigen hierbij zullen hebben. Met Life in a day heeft het weinig meer te maken...
Op 21 nog een klassieker van Mike & the Mechanics, zeer geliefd bij het Top 2000-publiek: The living years. Mike is natuurlijk Mike Rutherford van Genesis, die hier een 'solo'hit scoort waarmee hij menig Genesis-kraker het nakijken geeft.
Op 29 een re-entry van het folkgroepje The Horseflies. Kennelijk werd hij nog veel gedraaid en gunde ik hem een tweede chartrun.
Op 33 ten slotte Roy Orbison met zijn grote comebackhit You got it (met dank aan ELO's Jeff Lynne natuurlijk). Persoonlijk vond ik het niet zo bijzonder, deze hit, maar het was mooi dat de Big O nog eens terugkwam.

week 4 van 1989 met 6 binnenkomers.
Hoogste binnenkomer is van Dan Reed Network, weinig succes had deze band die toch behoorlijk wat aandacht kreeg van diverse media als nieuw geluid. Let's rock it up zegt-ie, na een redelijk standaard 80s begin komt inderdaad de gitaar er lekker in en wordt het een vrij stevig dance plaatje.
Ik was zo blij met Tom Blomberg in deze tijd... hij draaide als invaller van Frist Spits of bij de KRO regelmatig plaatjes die het in de UK redelijk deden van gitaarbands met zangeres, zoals Transvision Vamp, Primitives en Voice of the Beehive en nu dan ook Darling Buds. De band maakte 2 heerlijke albums (en een overbodige derde) waarvan Hit the Ground als enige de UK top 40 haalde. Dit was toch zeker de basis voor mijn latere favoriete 'genre' van oa breeders en letters to cleo.
Mike & the Mechanics dan met een gevoelige ballad. Paul Carrack zingt over het verlies van een vader, weet niet zeker meer of dat nou die van hem of die van naamgever Mike was. Ik gok het eerste.
The Revelettes oftwel Manuela Kemp en vriendinnen met hun 2e single en ook 2e notering bij mij. Sign of Love gaat gewoon verder waar de vorige ophield. Toch zal dit bij mij geen top 10 worden zoals de vorige, geen idee waarom niet.
Johnny Camaro oftewel Alfred Lagarde in z'n rol van surinamer, die zou in deze tijd van zwarte piet discussies echt niet meer kunnen... maar toen was het nog lachen in carnavalstijd.
En dan heb ik er eentje overgeslagen.
Countdown was natuurlijk hét muziekprogramma van de 80s, naast Toppop en Popformule of wat er meer was. Adam Curry presenteerde het het grootste deel van het decennium; het programma bestond al vanaf 1979. 10 jaar Countdown dus, tijd voor een eerbetoon dacht de top van de Nederpop met ook een aantal Belgen. Op de melodie van Petula Clark werd een nummer opgenomen met de titel Countdown en een tekst die deels van Downtown komt en deels aangepast is voor dit doel. Deelnemende artiesten, ach kijk zelf maar en zie wie je herkent

Prefab Sprout klinkt niet oud, nooit gedaan ook, maar feitelijk is de band globaal gesproken net zo oud als Simple Minds en Elvis Costello, in 1989 inmiddels dus een jaar of 10. Morrissey was van kort daarna en over Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young zullen we het verder maar niet hebben.

Hoewel ze ook pas aan hun 2e album als kwartet bezig zijn, na Déjà vu uit 1970...

Ik vind Belfast Child van de Simple Minds een geweldige single, de echt fanaten, van de oorsprong nog van de SM, gaan daar allang niet meer voor. Spijtig, mij mag je voor deze opzwellende bombast altijd wakker maken.

Welkom allen bij week 4 waar we alweer de 1e maand erop hebben zitten van 1989.

Deze week houden we toch maar vast aan dezelfde nummer 1 dus Marc en Gene en hun hartezeer nemen meer afstand van nog steeds Orange crush op 2, maar die begint nu punten te verspelen, maar dat ligt meer intern aan REM's nieuwe release.....
Duran Duran neemt nu deel aan de top 3 en de nieuwelingen van vorige week stijgen allebei flink door, zie vooral Tanita Tikaram op 5.

Een hoop nieuwigheid deze week waar de nieuwe REM dus al vlot binnenkomt op 15, die zal vast zijn weg naar de top 10 volgende week vinden.
Op 16 iets heel anders, een one hit wonder uit Noorwegen met een lekker pakkend Downtown.
One 2 Many had hier in Nederland en Engeland wel mooi een hit mee te pakken dus niet slecht voor deze Noren.

Diesel Park West kondigde ik vorige week aan en dat is nu prima gelukt, al bij 4 users en dit klinkt als geijkt indie pop materiaal waar luigifort en johan de witt patent op hebben.

Helemaal onderaan dan toch nog Lois Lane met het kalme My best friend, de band is dan nog niet helemaal doorgebroken , maar dit zoete liedje laat ons wel genieten van de zusjes Kleemann.
Die zijn hier nog even niet in de fase van Sheena Easton die wel even voor REM nog re-entert dankzij ranja en de wilde verschuivingen bij AngeloV, die laat het zoete op The lover in me voor wat het is, kijkende naar de video vraag je je af hoe iemand zich daar nog op het biljarten kan concentreren en waarom staat dat ding uberhaupt naast de dansvloer...

Onze vrienden van The Simple Minds zijn wel een bijna 100% new entry volgende week, voor de vrije gok dan Sandra We'll be together '89

Sheena blijft bij mij nog wel even scoren, die is van de gezamenlijke dus vooral afhankelijk van de grillen van AngeloV in 1989
Toch wel opvallend dat de lijstjes van nu nauwelijks tipparade/top 40 hits uit de lijsten van toen overnemen.

ze stond bij mij eind vorig jaar een paar weken mee te dansen dus helaas niet geheel paralel, denk dat Poeha the lover in haar ook wel had laten charten nog steeds

Het mooie aan de weeklijst is dat er echt minimale zekerheden zijn want er zijn ook obscure overlappingen van nummers waar je ze bij een bepaalde hoek users verwacht maar ze ook scoren bij minder verwachte users en andersom.
En het segment Erasure/Pet Shop Boys/Marc Almond lijkt een gemene delerrol te hebben

Ja, gevestigde namen... maar is er niemand die meedoet en nu nog Gail Ann Dorsey of One2Many leuk vind? Of Humanoid of Gloria... Of Michelle Shocked of Jeff Healey (ok die waren geen hit maar zou dan juist meer aan moeten spreken misschien).

En One 2 Many nu ook (vreemd genoeg had ik bij dit nummer iets van Highland in mijn hoofd maar dat is een andere act en dan weer niet zo'n leuk liedje naar mijn mening(One More Time-Highland) vandaar dat nu pas bij de weeklijst ik erachter kwam dat het iets geheel anders was

Er deed ook niemand behalve AngeloV mee met Robbie Nevil

Van de namen die je noemt, hebben Michelle Shocked, Jeff Healey en One2Many mijn top 10 gehaald, of gaan die nog halen.
