Robert Palmer die vlotjes inschuift, ik meen een eerste Jesus Jones en de Cult die, succesvol, zowaar probeert te klinken als de Scorpions met Edie.

Een andere Jesus, The New Christs, trekt de aandacht met de single Another Sin. Nog even nagekeken, maar het bijbehorende album Distemper wordt zwaar gewaardeerd: ruim over de vier sterren. Dat zegt natuurlijk gelijk ook wat over het niveau van Another sin. Of het dan ook voor gelovige mensen is weggelegd waag ik te betwijfelen....

Hier de nieuwe weeklijst, gebaseerd op 9 verse lijsten.

Sandra is na 1 week alweer verdreven naar plaats 4 en Gladys Knight eist nu de troon op.
Licence to kill is net zoals Around my heart voor mij althans wederom een onverwachte nummer 1 in de weeklijst, maar de consensus ligt gemiddeld op 4 aanhangers en Gladys heeft er nu 5.
Ranboy kan blij zijn want The Beautiful South blijft nog wel even. Ook Malcolm McLaren doet een gooi naar de top en is al tot 3 gestegen. Verder vallen de teruggang van The Cure en Lisa Lisa op.

Op 13 vinden we nieuw het project Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman met een soort mini rock opera met gedurende het nummer steeds meer uitbundigheid en uiteraard de kenmerkende stem van Jon Anderson. Het nummer maakt een flinke sprong de weeklijst in en is stijgende bij sommigen dus wat gaat dit brengen.

Voor U2 is de weeklijst vaak een hijgerig kort bestaan, de vorige single met BB King kwam en ging binnen een paar weken. All I want is you is misschien meer kansen toebedeeld, een beetje een paradepaardje van het Rattle and hum album, maar net zoals Guns 'N Roses lijkt U2 hier niet zoveel gegund, wie volgt de 3 users tot nu toe?

Helemaal onderaan komt Back to life van Soul II Soul schoorvoetend binnen. Wel apart aangezien dit toch de echte grote zomerhit voor hen was, terwijl Keep on movin' in de weeklijst veel sneller binnen kwam en het ook lang volhield. Misschien dat de komende hittegolf van 1 dag helpt.

Zoals te verwachten komt U2 op 1. ABW&H volgen direct op 2; dat wordt komende week een clash of the titans... Met snelle stijgers op 4 en 5 hebben we een erg jonge top 5.

Op 24 Tin Machine met hun eerste single. David Bowie zat al een tijdje op een doodlopend spoor en wilde wel eens in een bandje spelen. De single Under the god klinkt helaas wat geforceerd hard rockend en blijft niet hangen. Ondanks de aandacht zou het niet eens de tipparade halen.

Op 27 een vrolijk akoestisch plaatje van Danny Wilson.

Op 29 Prince met de titelsong van de nieuwste Batman film. Batdance is wel erg fragmentarisch; net als eerder Flash van Queen wil het maar niet vlotten met de single.

Op 30 de prima single van Tambourine, High under the moon. Had 20 jaar eerder beter in de tijd gepast.

Op 32 een minder bekende Bangles-single, Be with you. Na het gigantische succes van Eternal flame zou je voor de opvolger ook een hit verwachten, maar het bleef in de tipparade steken. Wel een strakke beat, maar verder geen goed refrein; het blijft niet hangen.

week 26 van 1989 met een nieuwe nummer 1, tja ranboy vind het niks maar bij mij stoot het moeiteloos in de 2e week door naar de 1e plaats. Nou was dat ook nog maar een heel klein stapje... zo scoren de Bangles hun 3e nummer 1 bij mij (tussen de vorige en deze ook nog 3 nummers 2 trouwens - en eternal flame #33). Dan ook nog 4 binnenkomers.
Hoogste nieuwe is van Transvision Vamp; ik was destijds erg blij met Tom Blomberg die ook liefhebber was en dus me op de hoogte hield van de nieuwste singles in dit genre. Het was meteen een van m'n favoriete singles van de band en nog wel, lekker uptempo en zeker na het valse einde nog even heerlijk doorgaan.
Heel wat anders daar ook een flink eind onder, de nieuwe van Gloria. Hier had ze het achtervoegsel Miami Sound Machine ook later vallen zodat alleen haar naam op de hoes stond. Dit is weer een ballad in de stijl van Can't Stay Away en Anthing for You, voor mij zeker beter dan die laatste, misschien ook wel dan de eerste.
10.000 Maniacs dan met de opvolger van langzame groeier What's the matter here die uiteindelijk wel meer dan 10 weken bij mij genoteerd heeft gestaan zonder top 10 te halen. Trouble Me mist wel wat van de kracht van dat nummer maar is toch zeker makkelijk in het gehoor.
Pet Shop Boys dan nog, die doen het soms best goed bij mij, deze zei me op voorhand helemaal niks meer. Eigenlijk bij beluistering nog nauwelijks herkenning, van het nummer, de sound is natuurlijk onmiskenbaar PSB.

Niet zoveel veranderingen in de top 10. Leeds Station blijft comfortabel aan de leiding, al komen er wel aantal nummers aandringen. Onderaan komt er vooral wat hiphop binnen maar de hoogste nieuwkomer is het mooie Pure van The Lightning Seeds.

Het is een zware last, de wekelijkse lijst te maken en dan slechts 20 nummers te mogen kiezen. Want daarmee komt er automatisch erg veel te vervallen en wie het redt, mag slechts enkele weken van de status genieten.
In ieder geval kan de lijst zonder veel problemen en zeker zonder slechte muziek worden afgespeeld. Feitelijk is alles top.

En dat geldt ook voor de nieuwe van Bad English. Feitelijk wilde ik mij beperken tot 1 nieuwe, met alleen de prima single van de Hummingbirds. Maar toen kreeg ik Bad English weer voor mijn kiezen en toen was de keuze snel gemaakt. Ten koste van Robert Palmer en eigenlijk ook Jesus Jones. Maar ja, er gaan nu eenmaal slechts 20 nummers in een Top 20.

Oh ik dacht zeker te weten dat Hummingbirds bij mij ook in de lijst had gestaan maar kan er niks over vinden. Misschien iets te laat ontdekt, weet het niet meer. Geweldig nummer, dat wel.

Dat zou toch heel goed kunnen, dat het in je lijst heeft gestaan?

En met week 26 zijn we op de helft van het terugblikken op muziekjaar 1989.
Dat doen we wederom met 9 nieuwe lijsten. Deze week is het thema Comeback "kids" (of Ouwe lullen) met diverse artiesten die in 1989 allemaal met een nieuw album kwamen en een hit meepikten.

Bij ons doen we opnieuw aan stuivertje wisselen, nu moet Gladys Knight meteen terug naar 3 en krijgt The Beautiful South de hoofdpositie. Het is de derde keer op rij dat we voor een nieuwe nummer 1 gaan en de voguende dansers van Malcolm McLaren azen ook op die plek. De top 3 neemt wel een afstand van een enorme middenmoot tot ongeveer nummer 9 en dan een tweede deel van grofweg 10 tot 15 (of zo u wilt tot de uitgang). De horde om de lijst te halen ligt met 32 punten dan weer vrij hoog. Opvallende stijger is Melissa Etheridge die opeens in de spurtstand gaat.

Op nummer 12 schrapende Joe Cocker die met When the night comes een comeback hit scoorde in 1989.
Het was de eerste single van het album One night of sin.
Net daaronder vinden we het Ierse gezelligheidsdier Van Morrison met het uiterst gevoelige en sympathieke Have I told you lately, een moderne evergreen die je nog vaak hoort op de radio. Liever deze dan Brown eyed girl in dat opzicht. Het kwam ook van een nieuw album, Avalon sunset.

Op 19 wederom een comeback actie, nu van The Doobie Brothers. Die kennen we o.a. van Long train running en het mooie What a fool believes. In 1989 kroop het comeback bloed door de aderen en kwam er een nieuw album "Cycles". Op de single "The doctor" horen we niet Michael McDonald, maar gitarist Tom Johnston. Het nummer bruist van enthousiasme en in thuisland USA haalde het een nette 9e plaats.

En net binnen nog op 20 Stan Ridgway. Die scoorde in de eerste helft van de jaren 80 een hit met het nummer Camouflage. In 1989 is er dan Calling out to Carol dat eigenlijk alleen in Nederland en Belgie aansloeg.
Blijkbaar is deze Carol een dame van lichte zeden, wie het weet mag het zeggen.

Eerste helft van de 80s zat hij nog in de band Wall of Voodoo maar top 40's haalden die niet. Wel een paar leuke punk/wavesingles (nou ja, ken eigenlijk alleen Mexican Radio).

U2 blijft overeind, ABW&H blijven op 2. Song for whoever stijgt sterk door en kan zo ook in de gezamenlijke lijst nog meer punten krijgen.

Vijf binnenkomers, allemaal slechts in de dertig.
Op 31 de nieuwe single van de Simple Minds. In tegenstelling tot beide voorgangers klinkt dit helaas ongeïnspireerd, en eigenlijk zou het (kort door de bocht) nooit meer wat worden met de Schotse band...
Op 32 Breakthru' van Queen dat een van hun sterkste singles uitbrengt, in een reeks van hits. Mooi is dat de tekst, de muziek en de clip bij Breakthru' een geheel vormen.
Op 34 de tweede hit van Soul II Soul, dat zelfs de eerste plaats van de NL top 40 hit. Het klopt dan ook aan alle kanten.
Op 35 Trouble me van 10,000 Maniacs, altijd genietbaar dankzij de heerlijke stem van Nathalie Merchant.
En op 36 een vergeten bandje, The Silencers, met Scottish rain, in de traditie van de 'Keltische' wave die door U2 en Simple Minds is ingezet (verder Big Country, Then Jerico enz). Klinkt nu erg onopvallend.

Voor de verandering eens geen house die binnen komt in mijn lijst, vooral rock eigenlijk met The Stone Roses en Primal Scream. Daarnaast nog een vrouwelijke rapper en een Zuid-amerikaans(?) nummer.

Aan de top blijft alles vrij stabiel, alleen maar wat kleine verschuivingen. Leeds Station blijft de lijst aanvoeren en staat nu toch ook al 3 weken op 1.

week 27 van 1989, top 2 blijft gelijk, natuurlijk, Melissa deed alleen even netjes een stapje opzij voor de Bangles, verder niks aan de hand. Tambourine komt wel met stip de top 3 in.
Slechts 3 binnenkomers deze week.
Hoogste is van Nancy Boyd, na haar 60s covers en nog wat 70s discocovers nu een nieuw nummer dat klinkt alsof het zo een SAW-afdankertje had kunnen zijn. Ik hoor haar toch liever met de covers, maar haar herkenbare stem maakt het toch nog wel de moeite waard.
Dan U2, die zijn inmiddels in een fase van hit-or-miss beland bij mij, dit nummer is dan weer een 'hit', prima nummer voor deze periode. Zo is dit voor mij de opvolger van With or Without You, die overigens de onderste 10 niet eens uit kwam.
Onderin dan ook bij mij Tin Machine, oftewel hardrockende Bowie. Wat moet je er van zeggen. Volgens mij wist ik toen ook niet precies wat ik er mee aanmoest en was het meer novetly dan echt goed.
