Traag en sloom maar heerlijk wandelt de nieuwe single van UB40 van het begin naar het einde. Nu nog even een paar graden warmer en iets meer zon..

De Brede Herwaardering.
Een band die daar bijvooreeld onder valt is de Simple Minds. Eerder enigszins ondergesneeuwd qua hits en beoordelingen. De laatste jaren bij mij weer een beetje in opkomst en goede resultaten in diverse lijsten.
Daar valt Kick it in ook zeker onder.

Mike Oldfield scoort nog wel iets in de Engelse lijsten maar heeft de laatste jaren, dat wil zeggen na de grote successen van Moonlight shadow (1983) en To France (1984) grote moeite zijn publiek terug te winnen. Ook Innocent is geen topper van dat kaliber. Maar het is wel veel beter dan de algehele miskenning die Innocent nu ten deel zal vallen.

Misschien had het moeten worden gezongen door Maggie Reilly.

Goede vangst met Oldfield, die gaat bij ook binnenkomen volgende week!

Deze single werd ingezongen door Anita Hegerland, dat was op dat moment zijn vrouw dus die krijgt dan voorrang . Innocent was nog wel een flinke hit in Duitsland alwaar Hegerland sowieso erg populair was

Ben zeer onder de indruk geraakt van het prachtige, voor mij onbekende, Open Letter (to a Landlord). Dacht dat ik alle pareltjes van de band inmiddels wel kende. En ook Deacon Blue verrast me wederom. Geen grote hits, sterker nog, helemaal geen hits.

En weer een nieuwe weeklijst, gebaseerd op 9 inzendingen.
Voor de 2e week mag The Beautiful South de meute aanvoeren met een kleine voorsprong op Malcolm McLaren, de top 3 is deze week met Licence to kill op 3 standvastig gebleven.

Op 11 de hoogste nieuwe van James met het welbekende Sit down. We krijgen nu de originele versie van het nummer die wel wat afwijkt van de hitversie uit 1991. Het bekendste nummer van de band mag dus in meerdere jaren gaan scoren maar poging 1 heeft qua chartsucces in de echte wereld nog niet het resultaat van 1991.
In onze chart tot nu toe 2 spelers maar het zal vast volgende week gaan stijgen.

Op 12 een echte houseklassieker van 1 van de afgoden uit de scene, Frankie Knuckles.
Op het nummer worden de vocalen verzorgd door Robert Owens. Knuckles heeft tig honderden remixen op zijn naam staan voor alle groten der aarde en Tears zal ook nog een keer in een Full Intention remix mogen herkansen. Het origineel haalt de weeklijst ruim.

Op 15 vinden we dan indieband Another Sunny Day. De vorige single hupte al rond in diverse lijstjes maar het vrolijk getitelde You should all be murdered komt nu fanatiek onze lijst binnen. Met zang die ontzettend aan Morrissey doet denken en de positieve tekst helpt daar ook aan mee. Met mooi lang outro en dit zal vast nog even blijven.

Helemaal onderaan dan een volgende hit voor Roxette. Blijkbaar was dit de eerste single van het album Look sharp maar The look bracht Roxette wereldwijd in de picture. Dressed for success is dan wellicht ook beter niet daarvoor gebruikt want het is een stuk minder opvallend maar ik ben dan absoluut ook niet een fan.

Back to life is dan nog een re-entry op 18.

Helemaal opvallend is de verdwijning van Melissa Etheridge, die ging vorige week nog van 14 naar 5 maar staat nu op 21...........

Een verrassende top deze week: U2 duikelt met het prachtige All I want is you van 1 naar 4 met pas 5 weken; ABW&H klimmen in de 5e week naar 1 en Guns 'n Roses stijgen naar 2. Sowieso een erg jonge lijst, met maar één plaat over de 6 weken bij de eerste 14.

De binnenkomers zijn minder spectaculair, een erg folky (en dus minder spannende) Waterboys op 27; op 31 een vergeten song van Swing Out Sister; een cover van Days door Kirsty MacColl op 35 en op 37 een ballad die maar niet op gang wil komen van Selena (NL).

week 28 van 1989 waar Transvision Vamp begint aan te dringen maar ook de Pet Shop Boys een flinke stap maken. Dan ook nog 4 binnenkomers.
Hoogste nieuwe is voor Bon Jovi, ja dat vond ik toen nog goed en deze single in het bijzonder. Lang niet alles van ze haalde mijn lijst, sommige bleven nog wat in de lage middenmoot rond zwerven maar dit was even wat anders, vond ik toen in elk geval.
Mike Oldfield was met z'n vorige hits net te vroeg voor mijn lijsten, nu is hij terug met Innocent; sinds vorige week weet ik dat dat met zijn (toemalige?) vrouw als zangeres was, Het klinkt nog een stuk poppier dan Moonlight Shadow en To France en heeft ook iets onweerstaanbaars.
Eric & The Good Good Feeling, zo'n naam alleen schreeuwt al om een eendagsvlieg te worden. Dat werd het dan ook, Alarmschijf, kleine hit en dat was het. Het nummer klinkt bij herbeluidstering eigenlijk ouder dan het eigenlijk is. Bobby Brown maar dan met een Dan Hartman-vibe, zoiets.
Net als bij AngeloV ook bij mij nu Miquel Brown die tegelijk met dochter Sinitta in m'n lijst staat. Niet heel lang waarschijnlijk. Het is een remix van haar hit uit 1983, op youtube kan ik zo echter niet de juiste remix vinden maar het zal vast wat housiger hebben geklonken gezien de toevoeging 'acid house remix'. Op de b-kant van de 7" wel het origineel trouwens.

Wat een heerlijk nummer is dat Vertigo toch, heerlijke ontdekking en terecht op nummer 1 na 6 weken. Jammer dat niemand anders het oppikt maar geen probleem ik geniet ervan. herman had dit misschien wel opgepikt. 6 nieuwkomers deze week, al heb ik sinds kort toch wat minder tijd en het zal niet beteren nu ik na maanden werkloos te zijn, nu terug full time werk.
Waltz darling die ik voor enige reden in mijn tiplijst gezet had een paar weken geleden maar eigenlijk altijd vergeten te herbeluisteren. Ook Michael Jackson en Neneh Cherry komen binnen beiden met een iets minder nummer van hen. Vooral Neneh is het spaans doorheen het nummer dat de drempel van de top 30 bereikt. De hoogste nieuwkomer is echter Exposé, zal ik toch wel een paar weken van kunnen genieten denk ik.

Het zal duidelijk zijn, dat de nieuwe single van Alice Cooper veel beter bekt, loopt en daarnaast zelfs nog een hoog meezing gehalte heeft.

Beter dan zowel de Waterboys als de Stone Roses.

De Waterboys hebben echter een streepje voor: het is origineler, inhoudelijk beter, eerlijke volksmuziek, dat een soort van verwantschap oproept.

Plus dat ze deze week op 1 binnen kwamen in mijn 2020 lijst met My wandering in the weary land, een geweldig nummer na 31 jaar. Hoewel dat natuurlijk allemaal geen rol mag spelen

Week 28 alweer gebaseerd op 8 nieuwe lijsten en 1 op herhaling.
The Beautiful South houdt het een derde week vol, iets zegt mij nu de laatste week.
Ontzettend weinig punten voor een nummer 1, een paar maanden terug zagen we nog Lullaby ver over de 100 op 1 maar de verdeeldheid is groot op dit moment en we missen wat mensen.
Verder zien we wat bekende patronen, de U2 moeheid na 3 weken slaat weer keihard toe, vrij recente entries worden er weer zonder pardon uitgegooid en it's a men's world again.

Dat begint op nummer 3 waar de vaste waarden in de naam van The Pet Shop Boys weer terugkeren.
Met een single van Introspective die duidelijk meer de housey kant op stuurt. Blijkt ook van Marshall Jefferson oorsprong te komen, een house grootheid en Tennant en Lowe strooien daar hun typisch hoekige Engelse sausje weer overheen. It's alright was al snel bij vigil te vinden maar startte erg aarzelend doch duikt deze week bij veel users tegelijk op en we kijken hier met vrij veel zekerheid naar de nummer 1 van volgende week

Op 6 dan Ian Broudies The Lightning Seeds met het simpele aanstekelijke Pure met ietwat op eerste gezicht aaneenschakelende vergelijkingen met haar als liefdesobject op een houterige manier, maar toch slim in elkaar gestoken.

Nog een hoge entry op 8, voor Queen, dat mag ook wel voor een band van die faam. (al is dit weer een U2 traject achtige band voor de weeklijst) Breakthru is de 2e single van The miracle en opnieuw pompeus, aanstekelijk en over the top. Zal deze net zo snel komen en gaan als I want it all?

Op 11 een verrassend succes voor de sympathieke Amerikaanse Richard Noel Marx. In de USA rukken ze hem net niet de kleren van het lijf maar in Europa moet de toegankelijke rockpop nog aan gaan slaan, bovendien komt dit al van een 2e album van Marx. Satisfied ligt in de lijn van Bryan Adams achtige meeblerpop maar dan is het toch een stuk lekkerder en hij zal laten merken op latere albums dat hij inhoudelijk veel dieper gaat dan Adams. 1989 zou sowieso voor hem nog flink wat succes brengen met een andere single.

Op 14 dan weer eens Transvision Vamp, ook een act die hier altijd opeens opduikt en snel weer verdwijnt. Opnieuw een indiepop achtig nummer op eerste gehoor maar na een paar keer valt je op dat er vooral lang wordt doorgegaan met het refein blijven herhalen en herhalen plus de bekende "strijken doe ik nooooooooooooit" kreunkerm van Wendy James ergens op het eind.

En dan als laatste onderaan het collectief van Ian Astbury, het fraaie Edie komt gelukkig ook de weeklijst verblijden, deze fraaie rockballad met strijkers en al laat Guns 'N Roses wegkwijnen in the July rain. Langzaam opzwepend naar een knallende finale, ciao Axl

De hele top 6 blijft staan, geen unicum maar wel bijzonder. Ook daaronder gebeurt weinig, tot de hoogste binnenkomer.

Op 14 spat Todd Rundgren binnen, bepaald geen single-artiest (zijn enige hit 'I saw the light' bleef in de tipparade steken), meer een albumartiest, liedjesschrijver en producer (o.a. Bat out of hell). The want of a nail is een krachtig nummer, zwaar geproduceerd (uiteraard) maar ook een opvallende tekst: doordat de nagel die een hoefijzer aan de hoef van een paard hechtte, verloren ging, ging (met talloze tussenstapjes) de hele wereld verloren. Weet iemand of dit thema al ouder is? Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Todd het zelf bedacht. Geniaal is het wel (muzikaal ook).

Op 25 komt The Cult binnen met een ballad (na enkele stevige rocksingles). Gedreven zang, met aangehouden 'ie'- klanken en niet zuinig met de strijkers, is dit net geen hit geworden, maar wel een klassieker.

Op 33 debuteert Maria McKee, de zangeres van Lone Justice die solo ging. Nobody's child is een jaar voor Show me heaven, maar zit al behoorlijk in die hoek. Maria heeft een fenomenale stem, het liedje blijft wat minder hangen.

En op 34 Don Henley met zo'n degelijke ballad die niet echt opvalt.

Maria Helaas kende ik die toen nog niet.

Net als Song For Whoever nu ook You Should All be Murdered , een nummer die in mijn top 100 staat, na 5 weken bereikt het nummer nu ook de nummer 1 positie in mijn lijst. Het perfecte smiths nummer en wat een magnifieke outro. Na 4 maanden neem ik afscheid van 1 van de langst genoteerde nummers in mijn lijst: Voodoo Ray. Ook Lou Reed verdwijnt dan weer na 11 weken. Ook weer 5 nieuwkomers waaronder de tip van Herman. Voor de rest komen EPMD en Van Morrison, na weken in mijn tiplijst nu toch binnen.

week 29 van 1989 met een vastzittende top 4 en een tegenvallend binnenkomerslijstje, in elk geval qua clips.
Hoogste nieuwe is van Dire Straits, Money for Nothing. Eh, wacht? Eigenlijk is dit de 25e week in mijn lijst, in 1985 stond het al bijna een half jaar genoteerd. Nu is er vanwege een greatest hits een re-release (die ook de top 40 gaat halen wat in 1985 nog niet lukte). Verder is het natuurlijk bekend, de getekende clip, intro door Sting....
De andere binnenkomer is van Don Henley. End of the Innocence (praat eens met mike oldfield?) klinkt alsof het zo op een 70s Eagles album had kunnen staan, degelijk als altijd. Op youtube echter alleen liveversies (en heel veel covers) van dit nummer. Nou vooruit dan maar.

Golden Earring - Distant love

En buitengewoon dank aan voorganger vigil voor het vinden van de nieuwe single van Diesel Park West, die had ik nog niet zomaar gevonden.

Een sterke song, When Hoodoo comes, zeker als je het afzet tegen het feit dat daarmee Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, U2 en Guns n' Roses met hun nieuwe nummers wordt voorgebleven.

God part II van U2 is ook een vreemde eend in de bijt, per slot van rekening is het nummer uitsluitend als promo in de VS uitgebracht. Maar daar hoeven we ons gelukkig niets van aan te trekken. Ook overigens van het album Rattle and Hum.

Het gaat behoorlijk druk worden met sterk werk in de komende weken.

En daar ben ik op mijn beurt dan weer blij mee, want dat is een van de beste nummers van het album.

Do the Right Thing behoort voor mij tot de beste nummers van 1989 en al helemaal van de swingbeat. Voor Rob de Nijs heb ik altijd een zwak gehad. In de trant van Een Beetje Meer.
Dressed For Success blijft fier overeind na al die jaren, maar dat geldt voor een flink deel van dat album. Blame it on the Rain vond en vind ik nog steeds het lekkerste nummer van (The Real) Milli Vanilli.

Ook Poeha weer terug van de partij en een vrij kalme lijst desondanks.

Zoals voorspeld mag The Beautiful South aan de kant voor een act die de nummer 1 plek vrij vaak weet te vinden, The Pet Shop Boys stijgen door in hun 2e week met It's alright. Toch is er niet sprake van een enorm overwicht want Gladys Knight houdt stug vol op 2 en het verschil met de rest van de top 5 is maar erg klein.

Vandaag na erg lang rondgezworven te hebben onder de weeklijst dan toch de entry voor de Nederlandse band Tambourine. Het vrolijke circulaire High under the moon klinkt als flower power pop uit de Sixties maar dan toch schurkend tegen de jaren '90. Binnen de gelederen zit muzikant Bart van Poppel die ook dingen doet (muzikaal) met Lois Lane waaronder de hitsingle Tonight (zie 1995)

Op 16 een fan favoriet van The Stone Roses die bijna uit elkaar barstend klaarstaan voor de doorbraak naar het grote publiek. Dan klinkt She bangs the drums nog vrij eenvoudig als indie pop en zal het Madchester sausje nog even op het vuur staan te sudderen in de keuken van Ian Brown.

Onderin dan nog de opvolger van Eternal flame die ik volgens mij nog nooit had gehoord.
Weer een uptempo nummer van The Bangles en deze keer doet Susannah Hoffs een stapje opzij voor zingende drumster Debbi Peterson. Ondanks dat heeft het wel een erg hoog B-kant gehalte naar mijn mening en niet zo raar dat het geen erg grote hit is geweest.

Melissa Etheridge en The Doobie Brothers (vooral die) beginnen opnieuw aan de klim naar boven.
