Weeklijst 38 gebaseerd op 9 nieuwe lijsten met stuivertje wisselen tussen Tears For Fears en The Cure, onbekende singles van bekende bands en een sidejob van de act in de featurevideo.

Terug op 1 zaait Tears For Fears 71 punten bij 4 deelnemers bij elkaar en houdt Robert Smith en co maar een klein beetje op afstand, die staan in 6 lijstjes. De top 5 is verder vrij consistent en lager in de top 10 wat gejojo van Sydney Youngblood met Technotronic, een goede sprong voor Marillion en wat licht gestijg voor Depeche Mode en Janet Jackson.

Op 13 vrij onverwacht dan toch de weeklijst gehaald door Starlight met Numero Uno. Numero Uno zal het hier niet gaan halen, maar dit vrolijke Italo plaatje afkomstig uit de Black Box stal is wat housier dan Ride on time en haalt misschien wel de top 10.
Op 14 een stevige single van The Jesus and Mary Chain. Blues from a gun is de eerste single van het 3e album "Automatic" en hakt er goed in met een soort arrogante swagger. Vreemd genoeg moest ik denken aan Keep the faith van Bon Jovi door de ritmesectie....

Op 16 iets heel anders, The downtown lights komen van The Blue Nile, die ik als eendagsvlieg kende van Tinseltown in the rain. Dit nummer is ook vrij meeslepend en een stuk minder bekend maar zeker niet minder mooi. Het hing al een tijdje onder de weeklijst en steekt nu door.

De Red Hot Chili Peppers zagen we eerder dit jaar met Higher ground dat door musician en ondergetekende flink wat punten verzamelde, de Peppers hebben bij de weeklijst misschien ook last van het U2 syndroom, maar Knock me down komt via 2 lijstjes toch binnen. Het komt van het album Mother's milk en de schaarsgeklede heren staan aan de vooravond van het grote doorbreken in de 90's naar een massapubliek. Deze single doet daar nog niets voor en is in hun discografie zeker niet erg bekend. Een funky niet al te stevig popnummer met zware tekst voor wie er wat meer in duikt.

En dan haalt Lambada toch ook de weeklijst. Die kent iedereen, wat je er ook van vindt. Een Portugees tintelend onderonsje met dans die in coronatijd absoluut niet kan. In heel Europa een zomerhit en hier misschien ook nog een paar weken?

Een stoere cover van een Suzanne Vega hit uit 1987 vinden we op 19, via Evan Dando en zijn Lemonheads. Die zetten de gitaren echt flink aan, vooral als je de nummers uit begin jaren 90 van hen kent klonk het mij heavy in de oortjes voor hun doen.
Tenslotte laat Gloria Estefan het er niet bij zitten en we hearen haar voice alsnog voor poging 2 om met Oye mi canto wat langer te verblijven.

The sensual world stijgt van 9 naar 2, het is geen verrassing wie komende week op 1 zal staan.

Slechts drie binnenkomers; het lijkt de huidige top 40 wel. Sydney Youngblood scoort de hoogste op 27 met het uiterst aanstekelijke If only I could. Vooral het gedeelte dat begint met 'I think about the implications' laat mij altijd lekker meegalmen.

Op 29 een band wiens hoogtepunt bijna 20 jaar eerder lag, maar toch is dit is de eerste (en enige) top 40 hit van het Amerikaanse Poco. Lekker AOR-plaatje, heeft wel erg veel clichés in de tekst.

En op 34 het totaal vergeten Max Q met een bozig klinkend The way of the world. Helaas maakt het nu weinig indruk meer.

week 29 van 1989 met ook slechts 3 binnenkomers, maar kwaliteit gaat zeker boven kwantiteit in dit geval. Daarnaast blijft Melissa gewoon op 1 en was ikzelf verbaasd door de enorme stijging van Climie Fisher met hun toch behoorlijk vergeten song. Verder is Shell and the Ocean na 5 naamloze weken weer uit de lijst, gelukkig heb ik dat 30 jaar later nog iets goed kunnen maken door nu wel de naam te weten (helaas leek verder niemand geïnteresseerd).
Debbie Harry kwam uit het niets met een nieuwe single als voorloper op een nieuw album waarop ze samenwerkt met 2 van de Thompson Twins. I Want that man ligt behoorlijk ver van Blondie met electro invloeden, in de clip lijkt Debbie samen geshopt te hebben met Cher voor haar nieuw outfit.
Billy Joel heeft bij mij relatief weinig gescoord, You're Only Human was eigenlijk de enige echte hit tot nu toe (wel een flink succes). Nu komt hij met een nummer waar een hoop namen en termen voorbij komen. Niet nieuw. in 1974 deed Reunion dit al en zelfs in 1989 Transvision Vamp op hun Born to Be Sold (en vast nog wel meer). Het nummer is er niet minder om en werkt zelfs naar een climax,
En dan ook nog Kate Bush met een nummer dat in m'n herinnering wel stond als een goed nummer maar hoe ging-ie nou eigenlijk? Nou ja, na beluistering blijkt het wel een prima nummer maar kan toch niet tegen relatief recente singles als Running Up that Hill of The Big Sky aan.

Leukste single na weer eens herbeluisteren: Road to hell van Chris Rea. Eén van de weinige artiesten waarvan je in de loop van de jaren van zijn carriere kunt zeggen dat hij darker, beter is geworden. Van mainstream pop naar onderhoudende blues rock en dat dan steeds verder in de loop van de tijd.

De man kan ontegenzeggelijk goed gitaar spelen.
En wie immer zichzelf blijft is uiteraard Alice Cooper. Soms wat beter op dreef dan andere keren maar Bed of nails is zonder problemen Cooper waardig en gewoon goed te noemen.

En we zijn terug met een nieuwe lijst, veel vernieuwingen. Vooral nummers die aan me ontsnapt waren (Redhead) en nummers die al een tijdje onder mijn lijst hangen en die een herkansing gekregen hebben (Depeche Mode, New Order en Tear for Fears) en dan ook nog Malcolm waar ik een moeilijke liefdesverhouding mee heb.

Ondertussen bestaat mijn top 3 uit 2 Spaanse nummers en 1 Fins nummer. Jammer dat niemand anders ze echt oppikt.

edit: mijn meest geanticipeerde album van dit jaar komt binnenkort uit dus zou kunnen dat ik wel eens pas volgende week en te druk bezig ben met luisteren ...

Het laatste kwartaal is ingegaan mensen. Aan het eind van het jaar krijgen we 2 eindlijsten en met een spoiler alert kan ik al mededelen dat de weeklijst top 100 duidelijke verschillen laat zien met de "alle punten" lijst. Gaat het laatste stuk van het jaar nog voor veel schwung zorgen?
Weeklijst 39 bestaat uit 8 nieuwe lijsten en 1 op herhaling en met de enorm spannende belofte dat ons aller Big Thing luigifort volgende week bijdraagt aan de feestvreugde

Tears For Fears plakt er een 3e week aan en moet na The Cure te hebben afgeschud nu uitkijken voor zowel Marillion als 2 plaatjes uit het Black Box kamp waarvan Ride on time het stug volhoudt in de top 5.

Op 14 vinden we de comeback van de excentrieke Kate Bush die aan het eind van de 80's toch met een nieuw album komt en met The sensual world een nieuwe weg inslaat binnen haar eigen gecreerd wereldje. Met traditionele klanken en een betoverende video wist Bush een 17e plek in de top 40 te halen, dan doet ze het hier nu al beter.

Voor Richard Marx was 1989 een superjaar. Na het succes van Satisfied gaat het gas eraf en neemt Richard plaats achter de piano om ook andere markten aan te boren zonder al te klef over te komen. Right here waiting klinkt als een klok en gaat het aanmerkelijk beter doen dan Satisfied. Zijn wij ook zo romantisch?

The Beautiful South heeft het hier fantastisch gedaan met Song for whoever en de opvolger is opnieuw een scherp kietelend liedje met nu een hij/zij benadering. You keep it all in gaat het in het thuisland prima doen met een top 10 notering, gaan ze dat bij ons ook halen?

Net op 20 binnen The Beloved, die van "die net niet tieten clip". In 1989 in een andere bezetting en met hele andere doelgroepen, The sun rising is een Ibiza anthem en profiteert van de acid house explosie gecombineerd met een Balearic feel en Emily van Evera, via een sample van het nummer "O Euchari".
Dat levert mystieke zwoele popdance op.

Natuurlijk bereikt Kate Bush de eerste plek in deze lijst. Echt een fantastische plaat. Een paar jaar geleden maakte ze van The sensual world een nieuwe versie (te vinden op The director's cut), nu geheten Flower of the mountain. Tekstueel kon ze nu eindelijk de originele tekst van Ulysses volgens, maar vocaal vind ik het niet zo mooi meer.

Paar details uit de lijst: Oye mi canto schiet van 24 naar 12. Als een artiest gewoonlijk in het 'slappere' segment zit, heeft zo'n artiest altijd dubbele moeite om bij mij echt een hit te scoren; hij/zij moet eerst wat vooroordelen slechten.

Ook opmerkelijk is dat Personal Jesus in de vierde week al weer zakt van 30 naar 36. Nooit gehoord wat hier nou zo extra goed aan is.

Billy Joel komt sterk binnen op 25. Zijn carrière leek wat in te zakken, maar nu scoort hij drie sterke hits op rij. Als eerste We didn't start the fire, met een uitgebreide opsomming van tijdsbepalende namen uit de jaren 50, 60 en 70.
Op 30 Crossroads van Tracy Chapman, sober en ingehouden, maar wel met een typerend skiffle-ritme erin.
Op 35 zowaar nog eens de Urban Heroes, al is het aan de song niet af te horen. Nogal breed geproduceerd en heel veel herhaling van het refrein.
Op 38 een opvallende plaat: Blackbox met Ride on time, met de strot van Loleatta Holloway, die hier via een sample wordt ingezet.
En op 39 Maarten Peters & the Dream, de gitarist van Frank Boeyen die solo gaat. Degelijke plaat, maar ook wat clichématig.

week 40 van 1989 waarbij de top 3 blijft staan, toch zal Melissa er niet gerust op zijn met 2 flinke stijgers én een binnenkomer in de top 10. Overigens in totaal slechts 2 binnenkomers.
In de top 10, op 10, Belinda Carlisle. Ze heeft al flink gescoord in mijn lijst. Mad about You mocht helaas niet vanwege m'n eigen regel destijds nog dat het tipparade zou moeten halen, maar Heaven is a Place... haalde nummer 1 en Circle in the Sand ook top 5. De nieuwste is de eerste single van haar 3e album, Runaway Horses.Ik zie dat de gitaarsolo van George Harrison is, maar is dat DE Georige Harrison? Jazeker. Daarnaast verbleekt de achtergrond zang van Brekka Bramlett, toch viel die naam me ook op omdat die nu in het 1995 topic meedoet als zangeres van Fleetwood Mac.
Dan het debuut van Lenny Kravitz. Tja, dat was wel een ding hoor. De eerste paar keer horen had je wel het idee dat het iets bijzonders was. En eigenlijk is dat nog steeds wel zo. Ik weet niet meer waar ik 'm voor het eerst hoorde, Avondspits of Stenders & van Inkel denk ik. Dat basloopje, die opbouw en die saxsolo, en hey jude-achtig eind, instant classic. Na deze single vind ik lang alles niet meer even goed of interessant van Lenny. Net zo vaak vond ik het vreselijk als heel goed, en soms neutraal. Dit nummer is overigens niet eens meer m'n favoriet van hem maar zo'n eerste keer dit horen dat blijft je toch bij.

Net als Tears for fears bij hun laatste single, heeft ook Lenny Kravitz duidelijk behoefte aan het verwerken van jaren '60 invloeden in zijn muziek.
Zal Jimi Hendrix van grote invloed op hem zijn geweest?

De Ramones die dus blijkbaar een nóg betere single maakten moeten wel oppassen Kravitz niet teveel de show te laten stelen. Maar ik vind hun 7" prachtig, sterk, hoewel puristen ongetwijfeld met weemoed nog eens terug zouden willen naar de goede oude punkachtige tijd van de Ramones. Maar waar zij afhaken, haak ik dan juist graag aan. Er is per slot van rekening niets mis met een aantrekkelijke song.

Een nieuwe weeklijst, gebaseerd op 8 nieuwe lijsten, daardoor weer veel gejojo.

De nieuwe nummer 1 is onverwacht Marillion dat Tears For Fears net voorbij passeert. Met de catchy "hook" van Hooks in you bij de helft van de deelnemers aan het scoren, net zoveel deelnemers als Tears For Fears aan zich bindt. The Jesus And Mary Chain completeert de top 3, terwijl Kate Bush en The Blue Nile opstomen. Black Box dondert heel hard naar beneden deze week en de quasi banale Malcolm McLaren verdwijnt helemaal.

Op 7 nieuw de voor mij totaal onbekende Brendan Coker and The Five 'O Clock Shadows.
No money at all klonk voor mij als een Dire Straits/Chris Isaak achtige track en laat nou net Mark Knopfler totaal ingevlochten zijn in dit nummer. Een wederdienst voor de hulp aan the Notting Hillbillies.

Ook hoog binnen op 8, de 4e notering bij ons voor S'Express. Die eerste drie singles kan menigeen nog wel opnoemen maar Mantra for a state of mind is alweer meer terug naar de club, het popperige is nu minder belangrijk en zoals AngeloV al opmerkte, Corona doet ook mee in de clip

The Pale Saints herkende ik van naam maar dat moet dan door 1992 komen want hier begint het voor de band uit Leeds (Leeds does it again) met Sight of you, afkomstig van de EP Barging Into the Presence of God. Een indie nummer met een gitaarmuur en een toch toegankelijk gevoel. Op het eind lijkt het of er een ander nummer wordt ingezet.

Dankzij minder lijstjes kan Wendy James het nog eens proberen op 19.

If only I could stijgt stevig door, maar of hij het niveau heeft om Kate Bush van de eerste positie te stoten?

Vijf binnenkomers deze week, en slechts één daarvan wist ik mij nog te herinneren... Op 21 komt The Incredible E.G. O'Reilly binnen. Menigeen zal zeggen: wie? Maar als je hem draait, herken je direct zijn stem: het is Terence Trent d'Arby, die voor één enkele single zich een nog interessanter klinkende schuilnaam aanmat. Geen slecht liedje, maar misschien door de vreemde naam geen hit geworden.

Op 28 dan de song die ik me nog wel kon herinneren, al hoor je hem ook nergens meer: Living in a Box met Room in your heart. Deze ballad gaat hen goed af, mooi gezongen, aansprekend refrein.

Op 31 Drama van Erasure. Het klinkt weer heel erg Erasure, alleen ontbreekt dit keer een herkenbaar refrein, en dan wordt het lastig om een hit te scoren.

Op 32 de opvolger van We are growing uit Shaka Zulu, Nandi van Mallie Kelly. Hier vrijwel geen Afrikaanse invloeden, maar een vrij standaard ballad, sober uitgevoerd.

En op 35 de song waarvan ik het bestaan totaal vergeten was: Rickie Lee Jones met Satellite. Deze zangeres is vooral bekend van haar hit uit 1979, Chuck E's in love. Hier heeft ze diezelfde lieve stem, en ook een lief liedje. De saxofoon of fagot of hoe dat ding ook heet lijkt wel geleend van Sting.

Met de gehele Top 5 op dezelfde plek en slechts 2 nieuwe binnenkomers lijkt het een saaie week maar daarmee doe ik de prachtige eerste solo-single van Fish ernstig te kort! Muzikaal zeer fraai en tekstueel richting Thatcher maar helaas nog immer actueel. Prachtige hoes ook weer, uiteraard gemaakt door Mark Wilkinson.

week 41 van 1989 met een niet heel onverwachte nieuwe nummer 1, Belinda knalt in haar 2e week door en zal daar vast wel even blijven staan toch? Lenny Crafford knalt overigens de top 10 in. Dan zijn er nog 4 binnenkomers.
Als hoogste Exposé. Ik zag ze al in lijstjes langskomen met hun vorige single, die heb ik destijds niet meegekregen maar deze ballad werd een hit en onontkoombaar. Een dikke top 10 hit en dat tegen het eind van het jaar... Toch heb ik bij herbeluistering minder herkenning dan ik dacht. Het refrein ok, maar de coupletten? Het lijkt eigenlijk wel wat op de volgende binnenkomer.
Die volgende is van Roxette. Na tophit The Look en mislukte heruitgave Dressed for Succes is het nu weer tijd voor een enorme hit. Listen to Your Heart is een powerballad die Marie in haar eentje mag zingen, dat zijn toch wel de beste.
Veel lager dan Rory Block met een compleet vergeten nummer. Dat ik Lovin' Whiskey destijds goed vond had ik wel onthouden maar dat er een opvolger was dus niet meer. Turning Point is wat meer uptempo dan de voorganger en doet zelfs wat aan Fleetwood Mac denken.
Nog iets verder onderin dan nog The Nits, hoewel hier zonder The, met een live versie van hun drietalige songtitel Adieu Sweet Bahnhof. Oorspronkelijk uit 1984, de live versie werd in 1989 een top 40 hit.
