Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe blijven een stuk dichter bij Yes dan dat Fish zich presenteert als ware erfgenaam van Marillion.
Begrijpelijk, Fish heeft zich van Marillion afgekeerd omdat de band 'te groot' werd en hij voor zichzelf vond dat hij moest terugschalen. Las ik pas jaren later van hem.

Van dergelijke inzichten of gevoelens hebben ze bij Yes in ieder geval nog nooit last gehad.

Dat neemt niet weg dat Fish prima voor de dag komt. Alleen tegen een dergelijke geoliede machine op oorlogspad is het uiteraard slecht concurreren.

Sonic Youth begint ook niet als zichzelf. Maar naarmate ze in die vijf minuten vorderen zijn ze aan het eind weer gewoon hun eigen ik.

Donderdagavond en tijd voor de nieuwe weeklijst met 8 nieuwe lijstjes waaronder de terugkeer van onze Sensual Personal Wedding Present luigifort en 1 lijstje gaat op herhaling.

Ondanks en ook dankzij deze historische terugkeer die ontzettend veel effect heeft op de lijst pakt Tears For Fears wel weer de nummer 1 terug, met een minimale voorsprong op de nieuwe achtervolgers, The Jesus And Mary Chain. Ook Kate Bush komt eraan en Marillion moet een gevoelige stap terug doen, al is het wel fijn om te zien dat de top 5 weer een hoog aantal punten moet hebben. Vooral de bands profiteren deze week en de dance en popplaten moeten van sterke huize komen om in dit gitaargeweld overeind te blijven.

Op 10 natuurlijk dan iets van REM. Get up is een mij vrij onbekende track, het is de laatste single van het album Green en ik vermoed dat we daarna zullen doorstomen naar de grote doorbraak in 1991?
Het nummer is wat pittiger maar vrij kort.

Op 12 de terugkeer van Belinda Carlisle. Zij komt met album Runaway horses en deze single mag de aandacht gaan trekken. Het schuift iets meer richting poprock vergeleken met de Heaven on earth singles.

Ook een terugkeer op 16 maar dan voor Billy Joel. Die lanceert het album Storm front (met 2 leukere /mooiere singles dan deze naar mijn mening) en begint allerlei namen en gebeurtenissen op te sommen, die wel veel relevantie met het jaar 1989 hadden, voor hemzelf ook.

Een drama op 18 dan voor synthipop duo Erasure. En Quelle surprise, weer een single dat een nieuwe plaat moet verkopen, zij zijn Wild! Zoals gewoonlijk een dosis electronica maar dan zo subtiel dat het niet de overhand kan nemen en er lijken ook kerstbelletjes te klinken.

En dan echt ook op 19 weer een eerste single van een nieuw album, nu The Wedding Present.
Kennedy klinkt behoorlijk opgefokt met een drum ritme dat van The Prodigy zou kunnen komen, alleen voor bruidsparen die stevig in de schoenen staan.

Het is toch de ratelende gitaar die het karakteristieke Wedding Present geluid bepaald. Heerlijk nummer, zou in 1989 echter niet geweten hebben wat ik er mee moest, had ik het toen gekend.
Ik heb the Wedding Present inmiddels wel een keer of 5 gezien maar allemaal wel na 2000 waarbij de zanger enig originele bandlid is en de gitaar ook niet meer zo ratelt. Nog steeds wel goed, wel anders.

Zes binnenkomers, waaronder enkele opvallende. Op 22 een ballad van damesgroep Exposé, vrij zoet maar toch zeker wel een goed klinkend refrein.

Op 24 het debuut van Lenny Kravitz (ik dacht nog niet in dit topic genoemd, tot mijn verbazing). Met Let love rule zet hij een anthem voor de liefde neer dat ijzersterk is. Het nadeel van zo'n debuutsingle is dat hij er nooit meer overheen zou gaan.

Op 28 een aardige meezinger van Wax (Andrew Gold en Graham Gouldman).

Op 29 Trevor Rabin. Wie? Bij mij is hij vooral bekend als de gitarist die de rol van Steve Howe overnam in Yes ten tijde van Owner of a lonely heart (die schurende gitaar daarin is dus van hem), en nog wat latere mindere albums in de jaren 80. Maar solo heeft hij ook wat op zijn naam staan; deze single is krachtig en wat bombastisch, maar niet verkeerd.

Op 36 The Beautiful South, in dit topic wat mosterd na de maaltijd want bij mijn collega's alweer verdwenen; maar nu werd hij dus op de Nederlandse radio gedraaid. Vlot deuntje, niet zo sterk als Song for whoever.

En op 37 weet Earth & Fire nog eens mijn top 40 te halen, misschien wel de laatste keer. De magie was allang verdwenen.

Inderdaad... Al had ik hem ook in deze versie nog niet (zo snel) gezien.

week 42 van 1989 waar Lenny lekker doorstijgt, Kirsty net de top 10 dreigt te missen en 5 binnenkomers zijn.
De hoogste komt zomaar de top 10 in, dat is vaker gebeurd de afgelopen tijd met wisselend succes. Tambourine heeft al gescoord met Summe rof Love en High Under the Moon, nu doen ze het met een cover van The Monkees. Pleasent Valley Sunday heeft natuurlijk helemaal de 60s vibe wat eigenlijk helemaal op hun lijf geschreven is. Nog de sitar er bij, die hadden de Monkees dan niet. Overigens werd het nummer zo'n 25 jaar later ook nog vertaald gecoverd door the Kik, die noemden het Zevenhuizer Zondag.
Jahoor, daar is-ie weer... ieders favoriete muzikale konijn. Jive Bunny heeft weer een hoop andere 50s en 60s liedjes gevonden en aan elkaar geplakt. Succes gegarandeerd, voor m'n gevoel, maar dan zou ik de vorige nog een meer moeten opzoeken, zitten hier nog wat meer echte classics in dan in de vorige, maar dat kan ook smaakgerelateerd zijn (oa Let's Dance, Hawai 5.0, 2x Twist)
Dan Candy Dulfer, staat nog een beetje in de lijst samen met Prince op Partman, maar nu onder eigen naam in de filmhit die ze samen met Dave Stewart, ja, die van de Eurythmics, samenspeelt. In de clip wat beelden van de film, wat is er toch van actrice Marion van Thijn geworden....
Nu ik toch Prince genoemd heb.... die komt zelf ook met de 3e single van de Batman soundtrack. In duet met Sheena Easton, dat hadden ze al eerder gedaan natuurlijk op U Got the Look waar echter Sheena niet op de hoes genoemd werd. Nu krijgt Sheena wel alle credits als duetpartner. Het nummer is een mierzoete ballad waarin Prince bij vlagen probeert hoger te komen dam Sheena, qua stem, dat lukt toch niet echt.
Onderin dan nog Rickie Lee Jones. anders dan ranboy was ik niet vergeten dat ze in m'n lijst had gestaan, alleen het nummer zou ik zo niet herkennen. Nu bij beluistering doet het refrein me erg denken aan Fleetwood Mac, niet erg.

Ik heb er uiteindelijk wel altijd een zwak voor gehouden. Laat ik zeggen, er zijn heel wat mindere nummers gemaakt, ook door Phil Collins zelf. Maar Another day in paradise is gewoon een sterke compositie, vocaal keurig ondersteund door nota bene David Crosby.

Hoodoo Gurus is eigenlijk al een hele oude Australische rockband (1981), nog actief halverwege de jaren '90 en volgend jaar nog een laatste album. Voorlopig. Om daarna pas weer terug te keren in 2004. Wel alleraardigste muziek, maar niet zo heel erg terug te vinden in de hitlijsten.

Tom Petty ja, en Level 42. Dat zijn internationale acts met successen. Waarbij aangetekend dat ik Petty op Free fallin' wel heel erg aan de veilige kant van de weg vind lopen. Wat bloedeloze middle of the road, eigenlijk.
