Lekker laat op de donderdagavond, een nieuwe weeklijst gebaseerd op 8 frisjes en 1 halfvolle op herhaling.
Spanning ten top maar The seeds of love heeft net 1 zaadje meer dan The Jesus And Mary Chain maar ik denk dat we nu wel kijken naar de laatste week op 1, de concurrentie zit dicht op elkaar in onze steady top 4 deze week.

Of dat van onze new entries komt, dat zal moeten blijken maar die zijn niet overall geliefd.
De hoogste deze week op 13. Dit nummer was echt een megahit in 1989 en ontzettend populair in de tienerdisco waar ik toen kwam. U2 was natuurlijk al een grote naam eind jaren 80 en wat doe je dan als vriendinnen die Salt 'n Pepa, Wee Papa Girl Rappers en Cookie Crew zien charten.......je samplet gewoon een heel bekend riffje van Bono en co, die dat toelaten en achter jouw nummer staan. Succes!
A bit of... is een crossover rap single dat slim hoekt op New Year's Day en na flink wat teasen dan na ruim 2,5 minuut even het origineel laat horen. En nu? Rode lopers, Grammies, volle stadions?
Nee want Kiss AMC liet na dit nummer een gapend gat achter en verdween van het poptoneel, al zal scroogey Bono vast fluitend zn hand nog ophouden voor de royalties.

Op 16 de kennismaking met Lenny Kravitz die hier zo retro als maar kan wil klinken. Met hoge hoed komt ie door het hele chartland al had dit nummer wel een lange aanloop en veel MTV airplay daarvoor nodig.
Het debuut is dan zoals ranja al opmaakte misschien meteen het meest interessante wat Kravitz levert, na dit album gaat het allemaal allerlei kanten op met gedweep met de 60's en 70's als rode draad.
Mijn mening is nog steeds, Eurodance teksten op rock en dan is het bijster interessant voor de 3FM incrowd Tot nu toe bij 2 mensen.

En dan eindelijk dankzij jassn al maanden gepromoot nu het Spaanse Mas Y Mas dat binnensluipt.
Een Chic achtig gitaargeluid met funky begeleiding en een zweterige hitsige tekst (zie google translate).
Dit is nooit een mega Europese hit geweest, beperkt gebleven tot de vakantielanden, maar een schoolvoorbeeld van nieuwe dingen leren kennen via dit topic, want het kwartje viel bij mij laat.

Een lijst met ongewijzigde top 4, maar Lenny Kravitz springt van 24 naar 6. En zeven binnenkomers.

Op 27 Van Morrison met Orangefield. In de jaren 80 en 90 maakte hij geregeld smaakvolle en fijne ballads, waarvan er eentje ook een hit werd; maar de andere zijn ook prima.
Op 29 het laatste wapenfeit(je) van Patti LaBelle (van Voulez-vous coucher etc). Hier maakt ze een scherp statement over vaders die afwezig zijn in de opvoeding van hun dochters.
Op 33 de immer prettige 10,000 Maniacs met de prachtige stem van Nathalie Merchant; dit keer behoorlijk uptempo, over zwangerschap en kinderen krijgen.
Op 34 gaat Prince opnieuw (na U got that look) in duet met Sheena Easton; ook dit komt van de film Batman, en misschien daarom ook wat doorsnee balladachtig.
Op 36 Phil Collins met het al veelbesproken Another day in paradise. Hoewel de tekst nogal moralistisch is, blijft de muziek vrij van iedere bombast; het blijft nog net aan de goede kant van de streep.
Op 38 en 39 nog wat onopvallende werkjes van Wet Wet Wet en Level 42.

Een lekkere stamper van de Rolling Stones, de Stone Roses zoeken het meer in een soort van lichte psychedelica.
Toch allebei goede singles.
En laat die Kravitz maar schuiven...

week 43 van 1989 waarin een invasie van oude rockers plaatsvindt, help waar heb ik dat aan verdiend. Oja het is m'n eigen keus van toen. Tja.
Hoogste nieuwe is zo maar voor Neil Young, ja echt bij mij. Rocking in the Free World werd mogelijk uitgebracht in relatie met de val van de muur maar weet het niet zeker. In elk geval vond ik het destijds maar een stoer en hard nummer. Ach ja waarom niet.
Dat is leuk, Belinda staat nog op 1 en nu komt ex-Gogo's bandmaat Charlotte Caffey binnen met haar nieuwe band, The Graces. Lay Down Your Arms had zo op een Gogo's album gepast, overigens een aantal jaar later bracht Belinda er ook een versie van uit. En nog een leuk weetje, een van de andere 2 Graces scoorde later solo een stuk ruigere hit: Meredith Brooks. Overigens is de 3e ook nog wel goed terecht gekomen, Gia Cambotti speelde een poosje in de band van Bruce Springsteen.
Weer terug naar de oude rockers, 2 tegelijk... Ian Hunter en Mick Ronson, al had ik in mijn lijst van 1989 alleen de eerste naam staan. Een ode aan amerikaanse muziek, maar wel wat anders dan bv John Cougar een paar jaar geleden... dit kan zo op een rockballadsverzameling. Wat moest ik daar nou mee?
Paul Carrack, ooit van Ace en Squeeze maar inmiddels toch wel bekend als solist. De nieuwste is niet een van z'n bekendste geworden, toch heeft het eigenlijk wel alle Carrack karakteristieken en is feitelijk ook een ode aan muziek maar dan in het algemeen, niet alleen amerikaans.
En dan is er ook nog Phil Collins met een voor hem wel vrij standaard ballad.

Nieuwe weeklijst gebaseerd op 8 nieuwe droppings en 1 op herhaling.

Zoals verwacht heeft Tears For Fears het niet meer gered en neemt Kate Bush de toppositie over, vast niet verwacht toen ze 5 weken geleden binnendrupte. Bovendien bij 7 mensen genoteerd, iets wat de laatste tijd ook heel weinig nummers lukt. The Pale Saints en Lenny Kravitz melden zich nu voor de top 5 waar verderop de lijst harde klappen vallen voor Depeche Mode, The Blue Nile, Marillion en Kiss AMC al meteen moet inleveren.

Slechts twee nieuwe platen worden verwelkomd.
Op 11 een damestrio uit de USA met een mierzoete ballad, When I looked at him. We hadden pas al What you don't know en zoals vaak bij popdames en damesgroepen uit de USA rond eind 80's worden uptempo 80's strakke snaredrum klinkende nummers vaak afgewisseld met een ballad. In Nederland haalde dit een 7e plaats in de top 40 en was het hun enige hit (What you don't know was een tipparade notering). Dit nummer is voor de weeklijst wel mooi de 2e hit voor Expose.

Op 12 iets totaal anders. Fresh 4 en Lizz-E wagen zich aan de Rose Royce klassieker Wishing on a star.
Het producersduo Smith & Mighty tekent voor de stevige funky drummer beats en Fresh 4 is zo een vroege vaandeldrager voor de Bristol sound die in de 90's verder kan evolueren. Een piepjonge DJ Krust doet ook mee, die zal veel later in de crew van Roni Size weer opduiken.

Deze week maar 3 binnenkomers, en wat een toeval: alle drie van Nederlandse makelij.

De hoogste is een favoriete band van mij: Mam (van die ongelofelijk mooie single Maternité). Nederland is een loflied op ons kikkerlandje, waar zo'n beetje alle clichés langskomen, en alles op een altijd superswingende groove.

Op 34 de Frank Boeyen Groep, met een erg lange titel die een zwaarmoedige song doet vermoeden, maar dat valt mee (of tegen): een elektrische gitaar zet stevig in en zo heavy heb ik de FBG zelden gehoord.

Bescheiden op 37 de Urban Dance Squad, ik dacht hun debuut; dan is dat min of meer tegelijk met het debuut van de Red Hot Chilip Peppers (momenteel ook in mijn lijst); als crossover tussen rap, rock en funk schijnen beide bands grensverleggend te zijn geweest. Deeper shade of soul heeft vooral een (excusez le mot) dope groove en is on-Nederlands goed.

Het is dat je verexcuseert... onnederlands goed vind ik zo'n onzinnige term.
Eigenlijk wel weer een erg nederlands maar onterecht minderwaardigheidsgevoel (en dat net in een week dat ze als laagste van 3 nederlandse acts binnenkomen - zijn die andere 2 dat dan niet?)

De term hoor je tegenwoordig (bijna) niet meer maar was in de jaren 80 (en 90) nog flink in zwang. Eigenlijk sloeg de term niet zo zeer op de kwaliteit van de muziek, maar op het feit dat je niet kon terughoren dat het van Nederlandse makelij was. Bv. Het dorp of Pastorale zou niemand on-Nederlands goed noemen want het was overduidelijk Nederlands, maar Brits of Amerikaans-klinkende acts kon je wel on-Nederlands goed noemen. En daar valt Urban Dance Squad zeker ook onder (en Mam en Frank Boeijen niet).
Mijn excuus was overigens voor mijn over-hippe en on-Nederlandse taalgebruik (dope groove). En alles natuurlijk ook licht ironisch bedoeld.

Daar was ik al bang voor dat het daar op sloeg maar ik vond het beter hier passen
Ik weet dat de regelmatig werd gebruikt maar zelden bij iets wat ik goed vond en ik heb er altijd een hekel aan gehad.

week 44 van 1989 waarin de hele top 6 blijft staan, daaronder weinig echte knallers, alleen Roxette stijgt 4 plaatsen naar 7, van de rest valt eigenlijk niet veel te verwachten. Dat geldt eigenlijk ook voor de 6 binnenkomers.
Hoogste nieuwe is een oudje, dit jaar best veel 60s songs in m'n lijst en nu ook deze van Del Shannon. Runaway werd gebruikt als opening voor de tv-serie Crime Story, dat zal de reden geweest zijn voor de heruitgave.
Daar vlak onder Giant. De versie die ik als eerste hoorde was de album versie, die begint met een solo die ik erg stoer vond. De singleversie knipt dat intro vrijwel volledig weg en dan blijft er een vrij standaard hairmetal nummer over. Voor wie er van houdt de lange versie als link in de lijst.
Heel wat anders daaronder, de nieuwe UB40. Tja en dan weet je eigenlijk al precies wat je krijgt. Wel een fijn clipje trouwens.
Meer hair metal dan, van Mötley Crüe - met dubbele metal-umlaut. Dr Feelgood, en ja, daarop worden alle vooroordelen waargemaakt en geen cliche geschuwd.
Doobie Brothers met al hun 2e dit jaar, typische 70s aor sound.
Kylie dan ook nog met alweer een nieuwe, toch lijkt haar glorietijd bij mij wel voorbij als je het vergelijkt met de successen van 1988, daar helpt geen cowboypakje aan.

Ik moet deze lijst langzaam maar zeker aan laten sluiten op mijn lijst voor 1990, die ik eerder op mume heb gemaakt.
Dat topic begon ooit met 1989 (inmiddels 1995). 1990 is een jaar dat ik bij dit topic (begon jaren terug als 1979, zolang bestaat dit topic al, zie pagina 306) niet over ga doen.
1989 wilde ik nog wel een keer beoordelen, ik had daar nog veel laten liggen. Maar de jaren '90 zijn voor mij sprankelend genoeg.

Mijn 1990 mag, als dit topic blijft bestaan, gewoon worden overgenomen, die lijst plaats ik graag uit eigen werk.

Maar dat laten aansluiten van 1989 op 1990 is nog een vak apart, als je 1989 flink door elkaar hebt gehusseld. Ik kan nog net The Cult laten binnen komen, maar dat nummer mag 1990 niet halen. Daarentegen zag ik hier Neil Young al voorbij komen, die haalt wel 1990 en kwam in mijn oorspronkelijke lijst pas binnen op 23 november.

Even wachten dus. Zo ligt er een heel schema wanneer welk nummer binnen moet komen, hoe lang ze genoteerd moeten staan en hoe alle stukjes bij de laatste lijst van 30 december in elkaar moeten vallen. Met de juiste plek en het juiste aantal weken, precies om daar 6 januari 1990 op aan te kunnen sluiten! Tegelijkertijd hou je ook nog een grijs terrein om vrij in te vullen, dat dan steeds kleiner wordt naarmate de einddatum nadert.

Ja, ik zeg niet dat het leven meevalt.
Wel mooie binnenkomers, dat dan weer wel!

Dat betekend dat de mini epic van Tears for Fears al weer van de eerste plaats is maar de opvolger komt alweer binnen. Eens kijken wat die gaat doen.
