Hoewel ik zelf ook niet de voorkeur daarvoor heb, een single is makkelijker, werd Crosseyed and Painless uitgebracht bij het verschijnen van Remain in Light, begin oktober '80.

De Talking Heads waren toen al big business. Je laat niet een album verschijnen zonder song om het te promoten. Aangezien Once in a liftetime van half januari is, mag worden verondersteld dat er een nummer voor moet hebben gezeten, mocht daar aan worden getwijfeld.

Ja, en dan hebben we met Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark voor het eerst in weken een nieuwe nummer 1. Met overmacht, mag ook wel worden gezegd.
Het Nederlandse hoesje van de single is bijgevoegd maar ik moet er bij aantekenen, dat juiste Enola Gay de Top 40 helemaal niet eens zou halen, zelfs niet de Tipparade. Terwijl iedereen het nummer kent. Dat is toch wel opvallend.

De dames Caren May en Alice Wood zijn de verassende winnaars van de dag. Hoewel sommigen het al zagen aankomen. Twee eerste plekken en de andere users moeten er nog aan wennen. Late at night was natuurlijk eerder dit jaar al een aardige hit.
Zolang de zussen De Vries, want zo heten Nederlandse meisjes natuurlijk, optreden hebben ze ook al ruzie. Dus dat schiet lekker op. Meerdere reünies volgen op ruzies met dichtslaande deuren maar de feiten zijn dat ze elkaar al jaren niet meer aankijken.

En dat is dan voor de liefhebbers weer jammer, het scheelt natuurlijk heel wat aardige muziek.
Dire Straits zouden toch wel uitgroeien tot één van de bands van de jaren '80 maar zouden uiteindelijk ook uit elkaar vallen.
Je kunt maar beter Kate Bush zijn. Dan hoef je nooit ruzie te maken en blijft je naam in de muziek altijd bij je, of het nu 1978 is of 2024.

Mocht OMD nog op één staan komende week is het wellicht het overwegen waard om een andere (veel) meer gangbare singlehoes te gebruiken, die is ook veel mooier maar dit slechts ter zijde

Dat het zo bekend is komt ook doordat het nummer door Veronica gebruikt werd bij een intensieve ledenwerf campagne op de tv en radio. Het nummer kwam ook al snel in de Top 100 Allertijden terecht terwijl het dus inderdaad een paar jaar er voor niet de Top 40 haalde

Ah, prachtig topic was dat. Destijds gaf ik daar Totally Wired een 8,5 zie ik. Nu ook nog ongeveer. How I Wrote 'EM' vind ik iets minder, maar veel scheelt het niet. Mijn top 40 becijferen begin ik ook niet aan, maar nummers die erin komen vind ik minimaal wel een 7 waard. Vanaf de top 20 ongeveer een 8.

Op Wikipedia staat juist expliciet dat het in de VS een promo was:

Maar RYM laat als 2e versie een reguliere 12" zien (en die vind ik ook op Discogs, uitgebracht in Duitsland inderdaad), dus dan kan 'ie bij mij ook mee gaan draaien.


Daar zit wel iets in, maar dan des te vreemder dat de single zo beperkt is uitgebracht i.t.t. Once in a Lifetime.

In 1981 kunnen we ook nog de Mexicaanse versie laten binnenkomen overigens.

Dat vond ik zelf nu ook en nee met London Town van Wings zijn er weinig raakvlakken afgezien van de titel.
En over fris gesproken zou je niet zeggen dat dit nu typisch een 1980 nummer is toch?

Voor mij was deze band ook onbekend en dat geldt ook voor deze site waar er geen stemmen zijn gegeven op één van hun albums, maar het is een fijne ontdekking en zodra ik een trompet hoor in een nummer ben ik bijna al om

Op Spotify valt er genoeg te ontdekken van deze band al staan lang niet al op hun op albums er op en zijn ze nog steeds actief in de music scene.

Ik ken van Light of the World twee nummers: Time en London Town. Toevallig ontdekt omdat ze ooit op een Engelse verzamel-CD stonden met jazzy funkhits uit begin jaren tachtig. Ik vind dat twee uitstekende nummers, maar heb me verder nooit verdiept in de band. Totdat ik London Town tegenkom in dit topic.

Lekker fris en funky klinkend, en zowel deze als Time doen verlangen naar meer. Ik kom er net achter dat ze in Engeland toch nog wel aardig wat bescheiden hits hebben gehad. Wikipedia meldt dat ene Jean-Paul Maunick deel uitmaakte van de originele bezetting van de band, zonder eraan te refereren dat die man jaren later in hetzelfde genre successen zou oogsten onder de naam Incognito. Drie andere groepsleden gingen verder onder de naam Beggar & Co. Die band ken ik eveneens van een paar bescheiden Britse hits in het jazzfunk-genre. De appel viel dus niet ver van de boom...

Dit soort bands - naast de drie genoemde bijvoorbeeld ook Linx, Hi-Tension en Freeez (al klinkt hun grote hit I.O.U. heel anders door de electro-mix van Arthur Baker) - maakten deel uit van wat ze begin jaren tachtig Britfunk noemden. Een stroming die kort opleefde in de clubs in voornamelijk het VK en daarna weer snel vergeten werd.
Hier in The Guardian een mooie terugblik op meerdere muzikale stromingen die kort succes hadden, maar snel in de vergetelheid raakten (voor Britfunk even doorscrollen naar de laatste alinea). En de redactie stelde ook nog een mooie Top 10 samen.

Het aanbod aan nieuw plaatwerk is echt gigantisch. Als je ziet wat er nu al en in de komende weken wordt uitgebracht.

Eigenlijk spreken de nieuwe singles vrijwel allemaal voor zichzelf. Japan is natuurlijk altijd voor mij favoriet.
Maar ik zie ook een onbekende Blue Oyster Cult en ik dacht, dat de liefhebbers van het dansbare genre inmiddels Celebration van Kool and the Gang wel zouden hebben ontdekt. Natuurlijk een onmiskenbare klassieker.

Verder geen verrassingen, het wordt volgende week nog moeilijk met geen nummers die voornemens zijn de lijst te verlaten!

De drie hoogste nieuwe vind ik mooi bij elkaar passen in dit tijdsbeeld, al is het maar omdat dit typisch artiesten waren waarvan we destijds ook de albums in huis hadden.
Kleine opmerking: ik lees bij mijn collega's overal The same old scene, terwijl ik dat verder nog nooit zo geschreven heb gezien, en het ook nu nergens aantref. Ik hou het dus gewoon bij Same old scene .

De hoogste binnenkomer (en dan met name het b-kantje) doet me terugdenken aan een openluchtfestival (voorjaar 1981?) in ons dorp. Er traden veelbelovende lokale bandjes op en als publiekslokker was The Sound ingehuurd. Ik weet niet meer of het gratis was of dat er een geringe entreeprijs werd gevraagd. De lokale bandjes waren leuk (en kregen de verzamelnaam "Wassenaarse Welle"). Wat The Sound liet horen herinner ik me als snoeiharde herrie met zware bassen waarin nauwelijks een melodie was te herkennen. Het publiek was heel enthousiast. Ik snapte daar niets van en heb de band sindsdien veelal genegeerd. Nu ik het volume zelf kan regelen heb ik meer begrip voor het publiek bij dat concert.

Ashes to Ashes 9 weken op 1, maar of er een 10e week inzit met al dat muzikale geweldig dat gelijk de top 10 binnenkomt?

Ook een leuke ontdekking van Generation X. Het nummer komt me bekend voor, maar geen idee waarvan.

Verder alsnog entries voor New Musik en Fad Gadget. In de zomer zijn ze een beetje ondergesneeuwd, maar ze zijn te goed om niet binnen te laten komen.

Van Idol zelf misschien? Hij bracht het een jaar later onder zijn eigen naam (opnieuw opgenomen) opnieuw uit en die versie is wel iets bekender.

Dat zal het wel zijn denk ik. Er zijn verder ook niet echt coverversies die ik ken. Er is nog wel een Dancing With Myself van Fingerprintz uit 1979, maar da's volgens mij een ander nummer.

Enola Gay die verder wegloopt en vijf interessante nieuwe binnenkomers. Ik denk eigenlijk dat zowel de Talking Heads als Japan het gaan volhouden tot de Kerstdagen. Ook al is het morgen nog 22 graden.

Ook de Buggles, George Benson en Supertramp waren te verwachten. Er waren veel punten nodig voor de onderste plaatsen. Dat maakte Ultravox net de verliezer: ook 40 punten maar net slechtere noteringen dan Fischer Z.
Over verliezen gesproken, ik denk dat we ook volgende week behoorlijk in de nieuwe nummers zitten. Gezien wat er aan komt en gezien de verliezen bij de nummers 20, 16, 15 en 13.

Ook uniek: Dire Straits en Kate Bush die vorige week allebei met 45 punten binnenkomen en er allebei deze week 14 bij krijgen. Dat zijn statistische gegevens om van te watertanden.

Maar de meeste winst zat bij de Talking Heads, +39 en Japan +33. Vandaar het verwachte succes.

Het aanbod van het 'reguliere rock-werk' is ook deze week weer zo extreem hoog dat er eigenlijk geen ruimte is voor alternatief/onbekend gebleven muziek uit die tijd. Of het moest Special Brew zijn van Bad Manners dat ik dan toch weer alleraardigst vond.

Maar voor het overige is het volledig bekend wat de klok slaat.
Wel kwam John Lennon voor het eerst in jaren met nieuw werk. Zoals bekend, wordt hij later dit jaar vermoord.

Van Blondie heb ik altijd geroepen dat The tide is high het slechtste is wat ze ooit heeft gemaakt. Daar moest ik later wel iets op terugkomen maar het staat zeker niet in mijn top 10.

En ik heb met het singeltje Hungry Heart Bruce Springsteen ontdekt. Ik moest nog achttien worden, het singletje had een gaatje in de hoes gekregen met een perforator omdat het nummer in de uitverkoopbakken terecht was gekomen. Ik dacht 'wat zal ik nog eens kopen' en voila de eerste kennismaking met Bruce ooit.
Dus dat soort dingen blijven je natuurlijk dan ook altijd bij.

Wat grappig dit .... mijn eerste kennismaking was ook met het nummer Hungry Heart dat ik hoorde op radio en vermoed bij de VARA?
De LP The River werd aangeschaft en raakte al snel in de ban van Springsteen en dat heb ik niet meer losgelaten en inmiddels zoveel concerten van de beste man bezocht dat die niet meer te tellen zijn.

De opvolger van The River was Nebraska en daar moest ik eerlijk gezegd behoorlijk aan wennen toch een heel ander soort "genre" dan op The River, maar later kreeg ik steeds meer waardering voor het album.
Atlantic City blijft overigens de favoriet van dit album.
