The Employees komen uit België en de single verscheen daar al in april. Het nummer heb ik opgepikt uit de Tipparade van deze week en verdient de titel hoogste binnenkomer terwijl de concurrentie erg sterk is.
Celebration is er daar een van, maar is voor mij meer verbonden met het voorjaar van 1981. Het was de tijd van de eindexamenfeesten en er zal geen feest geweest zijn waarop dit nummer niet tenminste 1 keer voorbij is gekomen. Zelfs ik als verstokte disco-hater kon aan dit nummer geen hekel hebben.

Vanaf deze week is m’n lijst ook hier met 5 nummers uitgebreid. Kan ik nog meer nummers kwijt die nu buiten de boot vallen

Goed dat je het b-kantje nog even noemt. Want waar het a-kantje niet zo spectaculair is, bleek Friends een stuk leuker. En de grap is dat Friends niet eens het album heeft gehaald. Toen dus een unieke single.

Het stond volgens mij ook al op het b-kantje van Don't Stand So Close To Me. Ik had het nog niet beluisterd. Ik heb dat nu wel gedaan en het lijkt mij een mislukt experiment. Ergens zit er wel iets in, maar het komt nergens goed uit de verf.

Opvallende nieuwe singles van Bowie en Blondie. Fashion vind ik eigenlijk niet zo'n topsingle van Bowie, maar wel gewoon goed. Blondie heeft de lat eigenlijk ook hoger liggen normaal gesproken. The Tide is High haalt het niet bij het origineel van The Paragons, het is mij hier iets teveel bubblegum reggae. Ergens wel jammer, want begin dit jaar regen het even geweldige Blondie-singles.

De onderste 3 zijn voor mij nieuw: Young & Company zien we ook niet meer terug, want dit is hun enige single. FIjne boogie/disco. Manicured Noise was ook geen lang leven beschoren: 2 singles slechts. Maar dit Faith is wel heel aansteklijke post-punk met saxofoon. Mo's Nancy is voor mij zo'n typische MuMe-plaat. Verder nooit ergens gehoord/voorbij zien komen. Het voelt een beetje geforceerd, alsof het afstudeerproject is van conservatoriumstudenten die een artistieke interpretatie aan Blondie moeten geven, maar het heeft zeker wat.

Zo kan ik ook uitbreiden
Ik heb van de nummer 18 nummer 17 gemaakt en alles verder naar boven getrokken.
Groot voordeel: volgende week kun je nog weer een extra nummer toevoegen!

En daar is dan toch Ultravox, die zat al weer even te duwen. Het mag even hebben geduurd maar niet zo lang als de entree van A Certain Ratio. Shack up komt dan nu binnen, bij Herman daalt het nummer in de 10e week van de notering naar 26.

We zitten overigens met een hele spannende top 5. Met klinkende stijgers op drie en vier. En zelfs een nummer op 5 dat onze lijst binnenstormt.
Die top 5 gaat de spanning voor volgende week bepalen. Je zou verwachten dat Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark dat makkelijk gaat overleven. Dan toch in ieder geval één week. Maar ik durf geen geld op de ontwikkelingen te zetten dit keer.

De Simple Minds hebben dan ook de grootste winst geboekt: +47. Japan was een goede tweede met + 38.
De pijn zit natuurlijk bij David Bowie -24 en de Teardrop Express -23. Maar Bowie staat dan ook inmiddels 12 weken genoteerd, zeg maar drie maanden. Exceptioneel.

Leuk ook elke keer weer om te zien, die toffe single hoesjes.

Helemaal mee eens. Dat is echt goud. Ik kijk er sowieso met grote regelmaat van op welke nummers er destijds allemaal op single gezet zijn en waarvan ik het voorheen niet wist. En dat terwijl ik toch een aanzienlijke collectie 45's heb en regelmatig op jacht ben...

Het is zo druk, nummers buitelen over elkaar heen, behalen in veel gevallen niet de gewenste resultaten, nieuwe tracks van de week er voor worden overvallen door de vele tracks van weer de nieuwe week.

Het kan toeval zijn, maar ik heb van het jaar 1980 ook de meeste singles in bezit (nu: 301) wat misschien een goede indicatie is van de tijd. Veel van die singles komen ook mijn lijst niet eens in.

Het Yellow Magic Orchestra klinkt zowaar als David Bowie. De laatste heeft beter werk gemaakt dan Fashion.
En dan twee zangeressen die ik, voor Nederlandse begrippen altijd heel hoog heb zitten: die van de band Mo en Renee. Toevalligerwijs tegelijkertijd zo'n beetje populair en ook tegelijkertijd weer verdwenen. Erg Jammer. Maar zowel The Mo als Renee scoren wel een paar hitjes.

The Alan Parsons verscheen met The Gold Bug maar komt alweer over enkele weken met de sterkste troef van het album The Turn of a Friendly Card. Ook dat verschilde weer per land, helaas.

Maar de absolute topper is natuurlijk de nieuwe van U2. De band weet inmiddels welke kant het op moet. Twee keer zelfs: het werd geen hit in Nederland in 1980. Maar toen ze doorbraken in 1982 werd hun eerste hit in Nederland de live-versie van I will follow.

Ook bij mij buitelen de nieuwe singles over elkaar heen. Ace of spades had ik destijds niet genoteerd, het werd sporadisch of niet gedraaid.
The turn of a friendly card stond deze week al wel bij mijn tipnoteringen, dus mag hij nu ook hier binnenkomen. De singleversie was een samenvoeging van de albumtracks The turn part 1 en part 2 (eigenlijk part 5), wat eigenlijk veel bevredigender is dan die merkwaardig geknipte versie op het album, waar drie andere liedjes tussen part 1 en part 2 staan. Destijds werd het niet zo veel op de radio gedraaid, net genoeg om in mijn top 40 te zetten maar niet genoeg om hoog te scoren. Dat kan ik nu goedmaken.
John Lennon is een van de zeer weinige artiesten die in de top 40 genoteerd stond, toen hij overleed. Aanvankelijk zou Starting over maar een klein hitje worden (tot 24 dacht ik), maar na zijn dood steeg hij ineens weer door richting top 10. Dat was toen heel apart (maar ja, de situatie was ook heel bijzonder).
Nancy was Nederlandse new wave, de eerste van een reeks leuke singletjes.

Ik heb die Nederlandse single-versie van dit nummer altijd een heel merkwaardig fenomeen gevonden. Ik heb zelf die single, en het label geeft een speeltijd van 3.20 minuten
aan, maar de feitelijke versie duurt een kleine vijf minuten, wat Discogs ook correct weergeeft.
Het nummer verscheen niet alleen in Nederland, op single, maar in de meeste Europese landen en ook in Argentinië. Op de UK-versie duurt het nummer slechts drie minuten, maar in de meeste gevallen geeft het label een speelijd van rond de 3.58 minuten aan, wat zou impliceren dat dat een andere versie is dan de Nederlandse single. Maar helaas krijg ik daar geen duidelijkheid over, want voor hetzelfde geld blijkt het label ook bij die andere versies incorrect.

Hoe dan ook, ik ben het helemaal met je eens dat die single-versie van een kleine vijf minuten het nummer perfect weergeeft. Het lijkt wel of het zo bedoeld is, met een mooie opbouw, een interlude en een orkestraal slot, en dat het pas later ten behoeve van de LP in tweeën is gedeeld. Ik heb me altijd afgevraagd of hier specifiek een Nederlandse 'editor' achter zat die die twee delen fraai aan elkaar geknoopt heeft. Helaas heb ik deze versie nooit op een CD of waar dan ook teruggevonden, behalve op de originele single. Zelfs niet op The Dutch Collection, waar jer zoiets toch zou mogen verwachten als de samensteller zijn huiswerk had gedaan.

Op de meeste verzamelalbums waar het nummer opduikt, zowel die van 'various artists' als van APP zelf, staat een versie van 2.40 minuten, aftewel part 1 van het album. Maar dat nummer eindigt voor mijn gevoel heel onaf en onbevredigend, alsof er nog iets zou moeten volgen dat weggelaten is. En dat is natuurlijk ook zo...

The Police met het veel fijnere De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da dan Don't Stand So Close to Me. Vooral de vibe van het nummer grijpt me meer. Velen (ook hier) zullen het vast niet met me eens zijn.
Musician zeker niet Tekstueel misschien niet hoogstaand, maar het doet me veel meer dan de wat stijve eerste single. En dan moet "volgend jaar" het magistrale Spirits in the Material World nog komen. Deze versie van The Police ligt me het best.

En dan een band waar ik de komende jaren al helemaal niet omheen kan...Kool & The Gang. Voor mij begint hun hoogtijperiode in dit jaar.

Ashes to Ashes nog steeds op 1, maar Change komt nu wel heel dichtbij - niet alleen in ranking, maar ook gevoelsmatig.

De single van Loredana Bertè dateert alweer uit april. Ze was me nog nooit zo opgevallen eigenlijk. De vorige singles vond ik niet zo en haar comeback dit jaar heb ik ook gemist (als 74-jarige stond ze op San Remo), maar dit is een steengoed italopop nummer. Beetje disco, beetje funk, rauwe zangstem, hier moeten de meesten hier wel iets mee kunnen.

Ook opvallend is de entry voor Lipps Inc, dat met Funkytown bij mij niet zoveel deed. Maar dit is een heerlijke soft rock/boogie slow jam. Blijkbaar een cover van een nummer uit 1974 van Ace; dat origineel is op zich ook al uitstekend, maar de wat houterige baslijn heeft wel een goede upgrade gekregen.
