Man of the World doet me steevast aan Velvet Underground denken eigenlijk, totdat het losbarst. Maar de lieflijke liedjes van VU en Belle and Sebastian ontlopen elkaar ook niet veel.

Slechts één nieuwe binnenkomer in onze lijst van deze week: The Chamber Brothers hebben hun plaats opgeëist ten kostte van Sympathy for the devil van de Rolling Stones. Vorige week stond dat nummer nog op 5. Maar blijkbaar hadden we er massaal genoeg van, deze week.

Over de gevolgen van massaal gesproken: iedereen heeft nog steeds Daydream van The Wallace collection in z'n lijst. Daardoor heeft een paar plaatsjes stijgen (gemiddeld) gelijk grote gevolgen: het nummer stijgt deze week gelijk door naar nummer 4. Terwijl de hoogste plek in onze top 15 voor Daydream de 8e bedraagt.

Het aantal tips nam deze week opnieuw af, blijkbaar kunnen we het goed vinden in elkaars nummers! Overigens staan er prachtige songs tussen. Ik had bijvoorbeeld niet gedacht dat de Guess Who ook in staat was tot iets melancholischer werk dan ik tot nu toe bij ze had gehoord.
Daarom is de tiplijst ook altijd zo boeiend.

"These Eyes" van The Guess Who werd al in november '68 in Canada uitgebracht. Op 03 december bracht ik dit nummer met een filmpje onder de aandacht. Niemand pikte het op. Jammer.

Maar was het bij jezelf dan ook een hit? Anders was het mij in ieder geval wel opgevallen.

Overigens, in december werd het alleen nog uitgebracht in Canada. In de VS zou het binnenkomen op 5 april 1969.
In Europa waren ze er trouwens niet dol op (om wat voor reden dan ook). Ik vind geen notering in Nederland of Engeland, bijvoorbeeld.

Binnenkomer in de Top 40 die de Tipparade oversloeg:

#34: Adriano Celentano - Azzurro

Een opvallende week, alleen al omdat The Who hier een interessante doorontwikkeling completeert van brutale r'n'b via psychedelische pop/rock naar stadionrock. De dagen van My Generation lijken bij Pinball Wizard echt van héél lang geleden. Zeker een van de hoogtepunten van het toch niet geheel 100% geslaagde Tommy-album (Quadrophenia doet me veel meer) en ook als losstaande single zeer geslaagd [9].

Ik zou echt Heintje eens iets anders dan een 1 willen geven, maar bij beluistering van z'n single kom ik er gewoon ècht niet onderuit. Wat een wanstaltige bagger is dit weer [1].

Goodbye van Mary Hopkins komt overduidelijk van de hand van Paul McCartney. De uitvoering is me dan weer net iets te klef, maar het klinkt allesbehalve onaardig [7].

Voor Afterglow van The Small Faces heb ik een iets beter klinkend clipje toegevoegd.
De zang is uiteraard heel sterk, alleen vind ik het arrangement net iets te wispelturig klinken waardoor het liedje niet echt blijft hangen. Het einde vind ik hier het hoogtepunt [7].

De tex-mex van The Sir Douglas Quintet blijft voor mij zo'n beetje in het midden hangen. Het klinkt zeker vrolijk, maar dat orgeltje geeft het een behoorlijke dosis kazigheid mee waar ik niet echt mee uit de voeten kan [5,5].

Hello World doet me dan weer iets meer. Het wordt vrij fel gebracht en vooral het einde is memorabel. Inderdaad een heel zonnig liedje [7,5].

Tony Hiller's Where The Rainbow Ends vind ik knap in de zin dat het deels Spaans, deels Shadows-achtig klinkt. Het klinkt spannend en zou zomaar uit een James Bond-film kunnen komen [8].

De gouden beker gaat deze week wederom naar Fleetwood Mac met hun Man Of The World.
De meer traditionele kant van bluesrock lieten ze op Albatross al achterwege en Man Of The World gaat op die lijn verder met het verschil dat Peter Green nu autobio gaat. Het lijkt niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn te zijn bij de man en dat komt duidelijk door in z'n voordracht.
De muziek is bijpassend dynamisch en volgt z'n eigen route. Een mijlpaal voor het genre! [10].

Dusty's single is verder heel aardig, al valt het temidden van haar andere singles niet echt op.
De blazers geven het geheel wat body [7].

Tja, Dave's liedje... Ik vind dat het nergens naar toe gaat en met dit soort theatrale, clichématige gedoe heb ik èrg weinig [3,5].

Fats Domino gaf ik eerder nog het voordeel van de twijfel (gezellig, etc.) maar sinds enige tijd werken die Beatles-covers me echt op de zenuwen. Klinkt het origineel heerlijk uitzinnig èn geïnspireerd, dit is gewoon simpel incashen met iets dat gewoon totaal niets aan het origineel toevoegt. Wat een dooie boel... [2].

Beter laat dan nooit.

Alleen Ensemble van Mireille Matthieu komt nog binnen in de echte Veronica Top 40, die laat ik buiten de alternatieve lijst. Ik ben sowieso niet zo'n liefhebber van dit soort muziek.....

Zowel de Marbles als Unit Gloria hebben toch wel aantrekkelijke nummers. Het thema van The Last Seven Days (God die zijn schepping in dezelfde zeven dagen weer ongedaan maakt) is alleraardigst bedacht.
The Walls fell down klonk bij nadere bestudering heel bekend. Het zou ook best een grote hit worden in 1969.

Verdwenen zijn To love somebody van Nina Simone, I heard it through the grapevine van Marvin Gaye, Atlantis van Donovan en Don Juan van Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich.

Een lijstje waar toch helemaal niets op aan te merken is. Het behoeft ook nauwelijks enige introductie. Misschien wel één van de beste lijstjes aller tijden. The Kinks met een wat onbekender nummer maar, uiteraard, wel aardig. Jefferson zal de grote onbekende zijn maar het is interessante pop. Het is overigens ook uitgevoerd door Barry Ryan, dan weet je gelijk in welke hoek het zit.

Vorige week wilde ik graag The Who nog een week op de eerste plaats en negeerde ik nog even de entree van Man of the World. Daar is nu natuurlijk geen houden meer aan.

Twee debuten: James Taylor bracht in december 1968 zijn eerste eerste, titelloze album uit en in maart zijn eerste single Carolina on my mind. Op het Apple label. Hij heeft, volgens eigen zeggen, auditie gedaan bij Paul McCartney en George Harrison. Maar zijn Amerikaanse singer/songwriter aanpak is natuurlijk van een geheel andere orde. Gelukkig hadden de Beatles een open kijk op zaken en werd Taylor direct als supertalent herkend en kreeg hij een contract.

De Nederlandse Ekseption liet horen dat klassieke muziek heel goed valt te verweven in rockmuziek. Dat idee gaat de komende jaren nogal opkomen, bij meer artiesten. Laten we eens iets doen met de klassieke muziek. Maar zeer talentvolle band, Ekseption. Smaakvolle vertolkingen.

Na zijn vertrek uit de Byrds vormde Gene Clarke samen met Doug Dillard het duo Dillard & Clark. Op het snijvlak van country & bluegrass maakte ze een aantal leuke singles zoals Lyin' Down The Middle. The Motions viel zowel op dit panel als bij het single kopende publiek niet erg in de smaak. Ik was het daar wel mee eens maar merkte de afgelopen weken dat ik het nummer stiekem steeds leuker begon te vinden en niet van de playlist haalde. Van guilty pleasure toch mijn lijstje in. Peggy Scott steekt Janis Joplin naar de kroon in een aardige versie van Every Little Bit Hurts.

In het midden van de lijst ontstaat een soort vacuüm, waardoor sommige nummers heel snel stijgen en andere weer heel snel dalen. The Velvet Underground staat wel alweer voor de vierde week op 1, wat het de grootste hit in mijn lijst van dit jaar tot nu toe maakt.

Twee nieuwe binnenkomers ook. Dillard & Clark met dank aan 50tracks, maar de hoogste nieuwe is de opvolger van Everyday People van Sly & The Family Stone. Geweldig nummer van begin tot eind!

3. Lulu - Boom Bang-A-Bang
Eén van de 4 (!) winnaars van het eurovisiesongfestival van 1969. Veel stelt het nummer niet voor maar het is wel charmant in zijn eenvoud.
Cijfer: 6

7. Lenny Kuhr - De Troubadour
Nederland was toen ook aan de winnende hand, zou Anouk het dit jaar ook doen? Dit vind ik nog steeds de beste Nederlandse inzending ooit: passioneel en bezield met prima tekst. Eindelijk kan ik hier een hoog cijfer aan een Nederlandstalig nummer geven.
Cijfer: 8,5

11. Tommy Roe - Dizzy
Deze man had geen grote inbreng in de muziekgeschiedenis maar hij heeft wel een aantal leuke singles uitgebracht. Luchtig en aanstekelijk, passend in de tijdgeest maar niet gedateerd.
Cijfer: 7,5

14. Ronnie Tober - Arrivederci Ans
Je hebt in het Nederlandstalige genre ook veel van die karamellenliedjes waar dit nummer een voorbeeld van is (later gecoverd door Laura Lynn). Wel goed voor op een feestje als ik in dronken bui ben.
Cijfer: 2,5

15. Christie Lane - She Was A Gipsy
Dit nummer is op tekstueel vlak nauwelijks beter. Zwakke Engelse uitspraak evenals het refrein, die accordeon fleurt het nummer nog enigszins op.
Cijfer: 3,5

17. The Buffoons - The Radio Song
Klinkt als een kruising van Beach Boys en Mamas & Papas maar een klasse minder dan deze legendarische bands. Ik heb ook een déjà-vu-gevoel bij de tekst en melodie al vind ik het in zijn totaliteit best aan te horen.
Cijfer: 5,5

18. The Kinks - Plastic Man
Deze band heeft bij mijn weten nauwelijks een slechte single uitgebracht. Het klinkt vrolijk en charmant maar met humor en venijn.

20. Blood, Sweat & Tears - You've Made Me So Very Happy
Jazzy pop met veel afwisseling en de nodige spanning, met veel overgave gebracht waarbij de diepe bluesy zang ook nog een grote troef is.

Velvet Underground de nummer 1 positie weer op Marianne Faithful. Verder ben ik erg blij met de nieuwe single van Sly & The Family Stone. Wat een break in dat nummer, geweldig! Ook James Brown swingt erop los met een van zijn beste singles uit deze periode. Geweldige baslijn en blazers. Twee fantastische dansplaatjes. Ekseption en The Kinks zijn ook erg leuk, al moest Plastic Man wel een paar weken warmlopen voordat ik het nummer leuk genoeg begon te vinden voor een top 15-plek. Al met al maar liefst vier nieuwe binnenkomers, dus een klein voorjaarsschoonmaak.

En verdwenen: I can hear music van de Beach Boys, Harlem shuffle van Bob & Earl en Long and lonesome road van Shocking Blue

Redelijk grote eensgezindheid: er zijn aardig wat punten nodig voor de top. The Chamber brothers maakten puntenwinst maar daalden toch één plaatsje in de lijst. Vrijwel iedereen heeft Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel of The Wallace Collection in z'n Top 15. Dat leidt gelijk tot hoge noteringen. Alleen The Who staat nog hoger, omdat deze vooral veel hogere plaatsen bezet.

Drie nieuwe binnenkomers, begrijpelijke ook vanuit mijn standpunt.

In de oorspronkelijke Veronica Top 40 van 6 april 1969 kwamen ook nog binnen De laatste dans van Anja en Ich sing ein Lied für dich van Heintje:

Maar per saldo vind ik veel nummers uit deze periode van de hitlijsten helemaal niet slecht. Sommige hits zou ik nog wel een groter succes gunnen, er is gewoon geen ruimte voor. Veel nummers met een hoog Feel Good gehalte, dat wel....

Daydream neemt de eerste plek over van The Velvet Underground. Niet uit chauvinistische motieven, maar gewoon omdat ik Daydream echt een heerlijk nummer vind, heb het helemaal herontdekt dankzij dit topic.

Verder zijn er drie nieuwe binnenkomers in mijn top 15. The Beatles en Creedence Clearwater Revival komen binnen met klassieke singles, maar de hoogste nieuwkomer is deze week grappig genoeg een obscuur garagerock-nummer.

Vorige week hadden we al prachtige tips, deze lijst mag er ook zijn. The Herman's Hermits goed op dreef, Isley Brothers met een prachtige kraker. En The Beatles waren uiteraard nog steeds niet weg te denken uit de rockwereld. Of......... horen we op Get Back inmiddels enige sleetsheid die doet vermoeden dat......?

Nieuw op 9: Get Back van The Beatles en keyboardspeler Billy Preston is overbekend, mede door de onaangekondigde filmscene op het dak van een gebouw in Londen. Het is als vanouds weer een lekker Beatles nummer. (9)

Nieuw op 14: What Is A Man van The Four Tops. Muzikaal en tekstueel misschien niet hun beste nummer, maar ik heb nou eenmaal een zwak voor de Four Tops. (8,5)

En dat al na één week.
Mary Hopkin, ook op het Apple label van The Beatles, heeft wel een enorme reputatie maar wist dat eigenlijk in de herkansing over 1969, wat we hier toch eigenlijk doen, niet goed waar te maken.

Misschien heeft ze ook last van drukte.

The Beatles spreken voor zich. By far de beste band ooit. Four Tops is een prima tip van Heicro. Leonard Cohen heeft met Bird On The Wire een van zijn sterkere nummers.
The Dream komt met leuke Nederlands psychedelica en heeft alleen daarom al een streepje voor.

Ik zag hem ook al naderen, prima keuze.

Volgens een aantal bronnen is hij 1 april 1969 gereleased. Daar ben ik maar vanuit gegaan.

Misschien was het een grap.
