94 singles deden er deze week mee. Dat is niet echt een record, wat wel verbazingwekkend mag worden genoemd is het gemiddelde aantal weken: 5,5. Elke week komen er 20 bij en vallen er een x-aantal af, deze week 17. Het gaat natuurlijk ook niet hard, met twee nieuwe nieuwe binnenkomers. I go to Rio is een herintreder.

Maar van Van Halen zagen we het natuurlijk aankomen (het hoesje is overigens van de Amerikaanse Runnin with the devil). Het was mij overigens ontgaan, dat bij het nogmaals uitbrengen van Runnin' with the devil in 1980 je op de b-kant er gratis het debuut You really got me bij kreeg. Een dubbele A-kant dus eigenlijk.

Steel Pulse heeft één van de aardigste reggae platen van 1978 uitgebracht. Maar redt het nog net op z'n sloffen met 27 punten. Dus ik weet niet of het nummer een lang leven zal zijn beschoren. Een ander nummer met 27 punten moest helaas de lijst toch verlaten (Michael Zager Band) en zo werd het onderaan toch nog spannend.

Je weet het nooit, maar ik denk dat Elvis Costello nog steeds een makkie heeft, volgende week. Het aantal punten voor I don't want to go to Chelsea stijgt ook nog steeds.

Maak de borst maar nat: daar is de Police met hun debuut Roxanne. Een eerste in een hele reeks aan boeiende singles, tot dan in ieder geval 1984. Best kort eigenlijk, als je ziet dat iedereen de band nog kent. Alleen in Engeland was er in 1977 nog eerder een obscuur singletje uitgebracht. Leuk en aardig, maar het haalde niet eens het debuut album en heeft ook nooit iets gedaan. Behalve dan misschien op een tweedehands platenbeurs.

Het hoesje dat ik laat zien is overigens van Roxanne, de herkansing (1979). Want het zal menigeen vermoedelijk zijn ontgaan, maar Roxanne in 1978 werd nergens een hit. Ik schat in, dat we daar anders over gaan beslissen. En bovendien is het het hoesje van mijn eigen Roxanne.

Dan had ik Journey natuurlijk allang moeten laten binnen komen maar kon het er tot dusver niet van komen. Nu dan wel en net op het moment dat Television ook weer eens aardig piekt, dit keer met het nummer Foxhole.

Ik vind Chic zonder twijfel één van de beste dance-platen van dit moment. Disco mocht het worden genoemd, vooruit.
En ik heb een klein beetje gesmokkeld met de youtube clip van Jethro Tull. Ik heb gekozen voor de remix van Steven Wilson van veel later. Omdat dat zo prachtig klinkt. Moths is ook een prachtig nummer, helemaal niets van te zeggen.

Rivers Of Babylon wil ik nog wel een hoog cijfer geven vanwege de zonnige en exotische sfeer met heerlijke percussie, Brown Girl In The Ring is mij wat te kinderlijk.
Cijfer: 7,5 / 5

2. Wings - With A Little Luck
Eén van de betere Wings-nummers mede door de sfeervolle en gepaste synthesizer. Al prefereer ik de albumversie.
Cijfer: 8,5

14. Clout - Substitute
Niets-aan-de-hand-pop maar van het betere soort mede door de vocalen en het pakkende refrein.
Cijfer: 7

26. Harmony - It's Ok
Een simpel en vrolijk nummer maar klinkt nu ook wat gedateerd, zou zo in het eurovisiesongfestival destijds passen.
Cijfer: 5

27. Kellee Patterson - If It Don't Fit Don't Force It
Kende ik niet, vrij softe funk/soul. De baslijn vind ik erg goed, de zang minder. Een gemiddeld cijfer dan maar.

28. Barry Manilow - Can't Smile Without You
Geen groot liefhebber van Barry Manilow, het is mij te glad en net iets te stroperig. Melodisch wel behoorlijk.

29. Kansas - Dust in the Wind
In de muziek van Kansas heb ik mij nooit echt verdiept maar dit vind ik een oprecht mooie ballad, vooral de inkomende violen.
Cijfer: 8

30. Plastic Bertrand - Ca Plane Pour Moi
Punk van Belgische makelij die ik nooit serieus heb genomen (hij zingt het ook niet zelf in) maar vermakelijk is het des te meer.
Cijfer: 7,5

Goed gezien Luc, dit was ook de Nederlandse inzending van 1978 voor ESF.

Met Kayak' Want You To Be Mine is iets vreemds aan de hand. Er is op 45cat al een releasedatum in maart en vervolgens in in april voor de US te vinden. Het nummer zal over een paar weken ook eerst in de Billboard 100 binnen komen en pas twee weken later in Nederland uitkomen. Voor een aantal landen (Peru)(!)) was de releasedatum zelfs in 1977.

David Ireland is een engelse zanger die een single uitbrengt samen met Kayak (het is eigenlijk Kayak met een andere zanger). Ton Scherpenzeel is mede schrijver en producer van de track. David Ireland schreef op zijn beurt mee aan bijvoorbeeld May op Kayak's Starlight Dancer album.

Ben benieuwd of Another Girl, Another Planet een gooi kan gaan doen naar de eerste plek in onze weeklijst; weet niet of deze in '78 ook al op de radar stond bij de mensen die toen al bewust muziek luisterden.

Veel dank iedereen voor de fraaie lijsten die zijn gemaakt voor de 14e week van 1978! 50tracks, ranboy, herman, Poeha (lijstje van vorige week), Marzipaintree, Justus18, pureshores en johan de witt. luigifort voor support!

LucM dank voor alles wat nieuw was in de Tipparade!

Laat ik eerst Marzipaintree alsnog sterkte wensen en oprecht dank dat ondanks de koorts nog een mooie lijst kon worden ingeleverd!

Maar liefst zes nieuwe binnenkomers laten een mooie opruiming zien, zo is het toch elke keer als er een behoorlijk aantal singles worden vervangen. Het totaal aantal nummers dat meedong naar de top 20 was 93, één minder dan vorige week.

Het gemiddelde aantal weken daalde van 5,5 naar iets onder de 5 (96/100).

Costello regeert nog steeds soeverein maar begint inmiddels punten te verliezen. En dat is, zoals bekend, het begin van het einde.
Of Smith de eerste plek pakt, weet ik niet. Ik denk het niet. Van Halen en Genesis hebben ook een te beperkt aantal liefhebbers. Hoewel Van Halen nu wel erg goed gaat.

Misschien wel Chic. Hoewel, een disco single, ook al is het een fijne Rodgers/Edwards productie, dat zou een tijd geleden zijn.

En wat moet je doen, als je als "oudere" artiest om tussen al het geweld van de jonkies overeind te blijven? Gewoon zorgen dat je een nog betere plaat maakt dan zij.

Twee favoriete albums van mij van begin 1978 blijven Foot Loos and Fance Free van Rod Stewart en Double fun van Robert Palmer.

Stewart (33 in 1978) moest als oude jaren '60 rocker overeind blijven en deed dat met verve. Van Robert Palmer (29) hadden we nog niet veel gehoord, maar die had ook zijn roots al in de jaren '60. Dat zijn grote doorbraak met Double fun er pas was in 1978 is wat anders. Ik vond beide artiesten toen al wat ouder, inmiddels weet ik beter.

Desalniettemin, blijf je dus met sterke muziek gewoon overeind. Ook tussen ontketende jeugd als de Buzzcocks en de Stranglers (hoewel, was drummer en oprichter Jett Black ook niet al 39 in 1978?). Goed plaatwerk was er ook met de prog van Kayak en de soul van Earth, Wind & Fire. Als het maar van jeugdige klasse is, kun je er jaren op teren. Zo bleek later.

Rustig weekje, al staan er wel wat nummers te trappelen om binnen te komen. Maar die moeten nog een weekje wachten. The Police debuteert. Ben nooit fan geweest van The Police en/of Sting, maar heb toevallig het album, Outlandos d'Amour, waar Roxanne opstaat. Ooit geruild voor een plaat van Yes (Fragile) en dat was een goede deal want ik vind deze wel iets beter. Na Masoko Tanga is Roxanne mijn favoriet van dit album.

Tipparade-lijst van week 15, 1978 - top40.nl

1. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
Een geweldig en uniek nummer vanwege de dreigende sfeer in de instrumentale stukken met de heerlijke sax en de rustige vocale gedeelten met prachtige zang van Gerry Rafferty.
Cijfer: 9,5

13. De Migra's - Het Stadje Kufstein
Dat laat ik liever aan de liefhebbers al vind ik dat gejodel enigszins leuk.
Cijfer: 3

16. Gladys Knight & The Pips - The One And Only
The one and only Gladys Knight & The Pips met een softe maar degelijke soulsong mede door de voordracht van Gladys Knight.
Cijfer: 7

19. Elkie Brooks - Lilac Wine
Ook deze dame zingt met de nodige expressie en emotie in deze smaakvolle orkestrale popsong.
Cijfer: 7,5

20. David Gates - Goodbye Girl
Bread-zanger doet het nu solo maar deze song verschilt nauwelijks van het Bread-repertoire door de zang. Toch wat te gewoontjes voor mij.
Cijfer: 6

25. Gerard Cox - Chrisje
Luisterliedjes als deze worden veel minder een hit maar hebben de tand des tijds beter doorstaan dan schlagers of smartlappen. Niet opzienbarend in het genre maar fijn nummer.
Cijfer: 7,5

26. Guys n Dolls - Only Lovin Does It
Niets-aan-de-hand-pop maar klinkt nu vrij klef en ook gedateerd net als de meeste andere hits van Guys n Dolls. Zou ook een ESF-nummer kunnen zijn.
Cijfer: 4,5

27. Bonnie Tyler - Here Am I
Lijkt wat veel op haar vorige hit It's a Heartache maar haar unieke hese stem vergoedt veel.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Baccara - Parlez-Vous Français?
Dit weet ik wel dat het een inzending was voor het ESF. Hun Frans is al even slecht als hun Engels maar stiekem vind ik dat best leuk.
Cijfer: 5,5

29. Village People - In Hollywood (Everybody Is A Star)
Vrolijke extravagante disco, best leuk maar minder aanstekelijk dan de hits die nog moeten komen.
Cijfer: 6

30. Cheyenne - Separated Love
Lang niet meer gehoord, wat sentimenteel nummer maar ook vrij flets en heeft de tand des tijds niet ongeschonden doorstaan.

Wat mijn hoogste nieuwkomer betreft. Eigenlijk is het een laatkomer. Ik hield dit keer de datering van RYM aan en zo kon het gebeuren dat ik deze in de lijstjes hier over het hoofd zag. Jammer, maar ik vind toch dat deze bij mij de waardering moet krijgen die het verdient, ook al heb ik dit product twee maanden te laat pas op mijn radar. Hoogste binnenkomer bij mij.
